Subject: Siebe Gorman & Co Ltd Dewar

Hi Fionn,
My partner works in the scrap industry, and was given a copper Dewar see photos.

For several years, we thought it was a whiskey still (friends and visitors to our house simply thought it was an elaborate bong!) However, I have done a little research on it over the past few days to see if it has any value (historical, economic etc), and discovered that it was probably used in mine rescue or for fire fighting purposes.

We are located in Tasmania, and have mines mostly located on the North West Coast - although, most people are now familiar with the Beaconsfield mine after an accident there two years ago, and the subsequent rescue of two miners several days after the initial collapse.

So I guess there is a possibility that the Dewar was used in a Tasmanian mine.

Are you able to give us any information about its possible value (for insurance purposes), and its use? Also, how common are these Dewars?

Obviously, copper prices would have consigned many Dewar’s to the scrap heap.

Many thanks for any information you are able to provide us,
Simone Brinsmead.

Fionn
I hope this message finds you well?
In my continuing endeavours to bring my research to a book form I am trying to pin down the opening dates for all of the mines rescue stations that I have a record of.

I have searched your site but I can't find any detail of when Ilkeston was opened. Do you have this information please?

I would also very much like to contact John Lumsdon. Do you have an email for him or, rather than disclose this to me, perhaps you could forward this message to him and ask that, if he wishes, to contact me?

Many thanks in anticipation

Kindest regards
Phil Clifford

So far as I know it was opened in 1916 at Manners Road, as a result of the 1911 Mines Act which made provision for Rescue Stations; It was financed by a consortium of coal mine owners. S. Bratley was superintendent at the station from 1916 to 1924.
We would be grateful for any more information.

Peter

Subject: Looking for Pictures of Bennerley Coal Screening Plant

Hello There!

This is probably long shot, but hopefully not a dead end.... we are looking for a photo of the Bennerley Coal Screening Plant. Me and my Hubby often go on walks at the crack of dawn - catching nature at its best, we have stumbled across allsorts from Kingfishers to Monk-Jack deer (and the odd drunk!) And we were trying to picture what it looked like where the plan used to stand, now it is a haven for wildlife, taking advantage of its uninhabited wildness.

After searching every possible angle (to us) we cannot find any images of this plant - could you help us out or indeed

You could try the site:-
ILKESTON CAM
Images from Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border

steerus in the right direction on how we could obtain images and/or information of dates it operated etc.(We are fast becoming, in our own heads, local historians, and we have some interesting images and documentation on the opening of Stanton Iron Works and early copies of the 'Tizer)

Thank You for reading this email

Kindest Regards
Donna Hancox
