Hello My name is Paula Keenan and I am doing some research for a short film about the impact of the loss of the mining industry in Wigan and Leigh and the surrounding areas. I was brought up on the coal board estate in Golborne, my dad work in the mines for a while and his dad died as a result of a mining accident. I am working with a film maker who is an ex miner who was one of the last apprentices at Agecroft. We are looking for women who would be willing to talk about the effort they put in to the miners strike. We particularly need women to discuss what life was like being a wife and mother or girlfriend and how they managed. We would love to hear from anyone who helped to collect food or money for the strikers. We don't want these memories to be lost forever. We would like to hear from anyone who would consider being interviewed on camera for the project. The project also involves some reminiscence work in the community. Its aim is to reveal what life was like for miners and their families during the strike and how their lives have changed as a result of this. Can you help me by putting me in contact with anyone who may be able to help me? Thanks Paula Keenan |

Hi Just came across your site whilst doing some research. I was at Winthorpe yesterday and took a stroll down the front near the Derbyshire miner’s home. As a child we would come to the swimming pool at the camp which in the 60s was open to the public. I had many happy days at the pool but sadly I could find no sign of it yesterday. As far as I can remember it was almost on the sea front and was only separated from the beach by a glass panels? I can only assume the pool has now gone and replaced with the caravans/chalets which are adjacent to the home? Just wondered if you could throw any more light on this and would appreciate any dates when it was last used and closed etc. Such happy memories! Hope to hear from you Best wishes Steve.

Dear Mr. Taylor
I will be glad if you would kindly give me suggestions, e.g. where I should go or what I should read. And, I am wondering if I could see ex-rescue people who can tell me about mine canaries. I am looking forward to your reply. Hisako Shimamori (Mis) Canaries at Ilkeston Mines Rescue Station List of Stations Although very few are still open
