Information Please

Hello
I stumbled across your web-site whilst on a hunt for information regarding Gedling Colliery. I am researching my grandfather's early working life - 1900ish. Can you give any advice on how to find out what he did? Do you think there are still any records available? Who owned the pit?

Any information you could let me have would be gratefully received or perhaps you can point me in the right direction.

Many thanks
Sharon Richardson

You could try: -
Ian Winstanley's Coal Mining History Resource Centre, Email him
Or possibly try Hayes Information Services (Tel 0154 3570666) Apparently they keep Old NUM and Colliery Work and Training Records although it does not look as though you have enough information.

Maltby Miners and Skegness Holiday camp. Drama project

Hello
My name is Joanna and I am involved in a drama project on the history of Maltby. Currently we are writing a scene on the Miners Holiday camp at Skegness and I wondered if you had any testimony from Maltby Miners or their families on this subject, or if you could point me in the direction of a website that might!

Thank you
Joanna Doyle

Subject: Looking for Ellis of Newstead, Rowley and Jackson of Hucknall

I will start by saying I never became a coal minor, in 1969-70 me and a few chaps from school went down top pit in Hucknall, prior to the next school year, for a look around to see what kind of work we would be doing, it was only a two day orientation, the only thing I remember was the darkness and when we got out of the cage we walked over to this big steel door, I tried to open it without first opening the small draft to let the pressure or something like that before the door could be opened. We saw Rolf the cutting machine it was scary a bit and interesting.

Let me quit rambling, a lot of my family were miners, on mums side, Ellis of Newstead, Rowley and Jackson in Hucknall that’s what I was trying to find out about, are they still alive and what are they up to now.

I went to the Hucknall National Church School , and as time has gone by, all these years, there is nothing like the brotherhood of the family of miners. I still miss the old town at times. I live in the USA a state called Conn, I work in the food service industry and did a 17 year hitch in the ta food service industry it wasn’t all roses and still isn’t things are tough over here but I am still a Brit.

Cheers all the best. David.

Some one is looking for Wilson . Can I find out who?
As my G/Father and G/G/Grandfather were miners and named Wilson. They lived and worked in the Burradon area.

Kind regards Val. Simpson.

My grandfather, William Barnes, died 2 days after a pit accident in September 1918. Any idea how I can find out which one he worked at?

There is a possibility that Ian Winstanley might be able to help.

Hello

I have been researching my family tree and my Grandfather came from Cossall, do you have any info on other miners in the area at that time. My grandfather was James Birkin Whitehead and was born in Cossall. Any info would be grateful.

Regards

Lorraine Whitehead

I am seeking information on the Stephenson family of Mining Engineers

Dear Sir

I am seeking information on the Stephenson family of Mining Engineers:-

  • William Henry Stephenson (b1845-d1916) Born in Liverpool arrived in Ince at the age of 15 to study Mining.
  • By 1891 he lived and worked (Mining Engineer) in Ince in Makerfield, Lancashire.
  • 1901 Flintshire, North Wales.
  • 1903 Colliery Manager at Abram.
  • He died in retirement in Hindley.

Two of his sons:-

One son Harold Stephenson (b1867 Hindley/d1932 Abram or Haydock) was a Land & Mining Surveyor, Mining Engineer/Colliery Manager at Abram & Haydock, Ashton-in-Makerfield. Approx. 1910. Likely to have been involved with ‘New Abram Canal’.

Youngest son George (b1888 Ince-d after 1955 probably Yorkshire/Lancashire Border). Probably retired as a Colliery Manager in South Yorkshire (?).

If you cannot help perhaps you can point me in a direction to look?

With thanks,
Rob Smith
