BAKER George - 1852 - 24/08/1852 – Age 12 – Filler. Hayswood, S.S.P. Samborne, Timsbury, Somerset. Run over on incline. The boy's duty was to stand at the bottom of the shaft with an adult and receive the coal before it was sent up to the surface. On this occasion the man was absent. For some unknown reason the boy left his place and went along the incline where he was met by the loaded tram coming up. He tried to cling to the eighteen inches of space between the tram and the road but sadly someone had allowed a piece of coal to project and it struck him in the head, knocking him down. The wheels of the tram passed over his thigh. The leg was later amputated under chloroform but he died of shock.

BALL Nathaniel - 1857 - 08/12/1857 – Age 25 - Collier. Parkfield, Wethered, Cossham and Co., Bristol, Gloucester. Fell on rail, whilst lowering tram on incline, the chain broke and knocked him down, his back coming in contact with the plate of the rail, injuring his vertebrae. He died of his injuries on 29th December. He left a wife and child.

Cause in the first place there being no means for artificial production of a current of air. In the second the neglect of the butty, Thomas Baker, who had not examined the pit before the men descended.

The man went to brush out the sulphur (always a bad proceeding) but stuck their candle exactly in a part of the gate road where it would receive the gas so brushed out; the result was they were so badly burnt that they all died. 3 killed.
