Waiting to set some men on, they went into an old gate road not 6 feet square and timbered. Here, whilst in conversation, there came a subsidence of strata called a ‘bump’ which brought down a fall that killed all three.

Supposed to have suffocated by inhaling the smoke entering the mine from the main quarter brattices and plany tubbing of the shaft being on fire probably originating from a spark from the furnace igniting soot. 9 killed.

Cause in the first place there being no means for artificial production of a current of air. In the second the neglect of the butty Thomas Baker who had not examined the pit before the men descended.
