From the evidence it appeared that the deceased and a man named Day were working in the Enfield Coal Pit belonging to Joseph Barnes on the 8th inst. about 7.00 a.m. It was the duty of the deceased to examine the workings and to see that all was safe. He had examined the pit, but said he could not perceive any damp, he then commenced his work and immediately an explosion took place in that part where the deceased was working, which was about six yards from Day. After the explosion the deceased lamp was found with the top off, lying about a yard distant. The lamp was not injured, black damp had prevailed to a greater extent in the pit, and the lamps would not burn in consequence of it. The deceased was very much burnt and taken home immediately and medical assistance obtained. He lingered in great agony until Saturday, he died about 6.30 a.m. Before his death the deceased stated that he could not tell how the explosion took place, it was so sudden he thought his lamp must have fallen over after he had put it on the ground. A verdict in accordance with the facts was returned".
