FISH Benjamin - 1826 - 19/04/1826 - age 70. Lower Darwen, James Wilkinson, Darwen Lancashire. The pit was some time ago closed up, but within a day or two previous to the above time had been reopened, and Fish went down to resume his employment after dinner, another person being at the top. When he reached the bottom he fell, and his companion supposed him to be in a fit called for assistance. A person who was near came and descended, but when he reached the bottom he too fell down. The man at the top suspecting the cause
dashed a quantity of water into the pit and then let himself down. He succeeded in bringing up the last person who went down, who in a short time recovered, but when he brought up Fish the vital spark had fled. Coroners inquest was held yesterday week, and returned a verdict of "Found suffocated". Left a widow. (Blackburn Mail).
