HARDING John - 1796 - 23/07/1796. Newton Field, Somerset. John Harding whilst at work in a quarry at Newton field, undermining the bank too far, it fell in and crushed him to death. One Atwood, a lad about fourteen years old, who usually drove the horse at the coal pit wheel, being at his dinner, went to assist the old man and being near him at the time the bank gave way, his back and legs were both broken. He was taken to the Casualty hospital at Bath where he survived only a few minutes.

HARRIS Hezekiah - 1838 - 29/01/1838 - age 11 - Regulator. Gloucester. They were descending the pit about six o'clock in the morning, and having gone down a few yards, the rope suddenly broke (as it is supposed from a sudden jerk caused by its slipping owing to frost,) and they were precipitated to the bottom of the pit, a distance of 75 yards. Four killed (Gloucester Journal).

HARVEY Betty - 1822 - 25/03/1822 - age 3. Brookes and Co., Chew Magna, Somerset. Being with other children suddenly dropped into a hole where coke
had been burnt on the ground about a year since. In sinking her clothes gathered over her head so that her flesh came into contact with the cinders and she was burnt so dreadfully as to cause her death in a few hours. On examination, the ground for many feet proved to be on fire, and the foreman of the works assured the Coroner that every means should be used to extinguish it." Female.

HEW Joseph - 1829 - 03/01/1829. Quarry Paulton, Somerset. On Christmas evening, a poor lad having fallen into a quarry at Paulton near Bath in which there was 8 or 9 feet of water and a poor man, Joseph Hew who plunged in against the advice of bystanders succeeded in bringing the lad to the side of the pit but it was so precipitous that no foothold could be gained and before help could be obtained they both sank to rise no more.

He had been drinking at the Public House whence after behaving in a very violent manner by dancing on tables and stools etc and insulting some of his associates there assembled, he walked to the Lower Pit and, it is supposed, endeavoured to slide down the rope to the bottom but going too quick and not being able to maintain his hold he fel1 down many fathoms and was dashed to pieces; his hands being very much burnt.
