LANDLASS John - 1819 - 22/12/1819. Little Harwood, Lancashire .Bursting of a boiler belonging to a steam engine of a coal mine there. The explosion on this occasion was most tremendous. The fragments of the boiler were carried to a considerable distance, and the building enclosing it was completely dispersed. One of the unfortunate men was carried along with a portion of the boiler to a field some distance, and another who was working in the Engine Pit was killed by the stones of the building which fell in to it. Three other persons were severely injured. One of them we understand is still in a dangerous state. The boiler which was about to be repaired and the explosion was occasioned by the pressure of steam being increased beyond the extent of which it was calculated to bear". The jury returned a verdict of 'Accidental death'. 4 killed (Blackburn Mail).
