RICHARDSON James - 1791 - 03/09/1791. Vobster coal works, Vobster, Somerset. On Tuesday last a most melancholy accident happened in a Coal pit near Mells, Somerset between 6 and 7 o’clock in the morning, the pit took fire by which means eleven persons therein were burnt to death. We cannot but lament that some effectual means are not devised to prevent the deplorable effects of the inflammable air, too commonly issuing from the clefts and crannies of the mines of that part of the country. Surely the preservation of lives of human beings who are constantly employed in such hazardous labour is a subject worthy of the serious attention of every friend of humanity.
