SHEELEY Thomas Jnr. - 1823 - 19/06/1823 – Age 20. Walker, Gosforth Pit, Durham. Six men were employed in clearing out an old air shaft which had been filled up about twenty years, four working upwards and two downwards. The latter were about forty fathoms from the surface, when the whole mass, consisting of mud, stones and water, gave way, and the six were instantly overwhelmed and smothered in the bottom of the pit, into which the rubbish forced its way for above thirty yards. From the length of time that it had been filled up, the sufferers had no doubt of the earth in the shaft being solid, and hence they did not think of the least danger. Immediate exertions were made to dig out the bodies. 5 killed. (Newcastle Courant 28/06/1823).

SWINHOE William - 1813 - 28/09/1813 – Age 36. Fatfield Hall Pit, Chester-le-Street Durham. Explosion of firedamp. 30 killed.

SYMONDS Richard - 1838 - 29/01/1838 – Age 16 – Regulator. Gloucester. They were descending the pit about six o'clock in the morning, and having gone down a few yards, the rope suddenly broke (as it is supposed from a sudden jerk caused by its slipping owing to frost,) and they were precipitated to the bottom of the pit, a distance of 75 yards. Four killed (Gloucester. Journal).
