TAYLOR Robert - 1838 - 02/05/1838. Meadowhead, Haworth and Barnes, Rishton, Lancashire. A scaffold was hung over the mouth of the pit, and was suspended by four cords; the cords being attached to the rope which was fixed to the jenny. The deceased stepped up on to the scaffold for the purpose of going down. A person by the name of Ward had management of the jenny, and when the deceased got onto the scaffold, he told them to let him down. Ward turned the jenny, and the scaffold went down and when it had got about seven or eight yards, the deceased called to stop. Ward held his hand out and tried to stop the jenny, but could not as it was out of gear. The scaffold went down rapidly and struck against a trough which was in the shaft and threw the deceased off the scaffold, and he fell to the bottom of the pit, a distance of 50 yards, and was killed on the spot. THOMAS Thomas - 1807 - 07/04/1807. Mostyn, Flint. The fire (explosion) took place and the mass burial of 24 men took place the next day Five days later, another two men who died from their wounds were buried. All men were noted as residents of Tre Mostyn. Buried on April 8th, - 1807. "Burnt in Mostyn Colliery April 7, - 1807 by a Noxious vapor called the Fire Damp".

TITHROW John - 1819 - 22/12/1819. Little Harwood, Lancashire. Bursting of a boiler belonging to a steam engine of a coal mine there. The explosion on this occasion was most tremendous. The fragments of the boiler were carried to a considerable distance, and the building enclosing it was completely dispersed. One of the unfortunate men was carried along with a portion of the boiler to a field some distance, and another, who was working in the Engine Pit, was killed by the stones of the building which fell in to it. Three other persons were severely injured. One of them, we understand, is still in a dangerous state. The boiler, which was about to be repaired, and the explosion was occasioned by the pressure of steam being increased beyond the extent of which it was calculated to bear". The jury returned a verdict of 'Accidental death'. 4 killed (Blackburn Mail).
