Bulwell Colliery
1868-1945

Bulwell was a single shaft pit and the main haulage rope engine house was on the surface, the rope ran over the wheels of an upturned loco engine then down the shaft This is where the shonkey word is supposed to  have come from, via the noise and vibration when the rope was in use. On closure it was used as a pumping station for a while.
