Chimneys

Ownership of the Mines

Mines were mainly under Influence of the Church up to 1509.

Mines were generally owned by the ‘Upper classes’ or landowners.

Mines under Influence of Royalty from 1509 to 1649.

Mines were under the influence of Oliver Cromwell from 1649 to 1660.

Mines were taken over by Parliament during the First World War from 17th February  1917 to 1918 under a Coal Controller.
Mines were taken over by Parliament in the Second World War 1st July 1942 - 1945.

Privatised mines

Up to 31st December 1946

Nationalisation of the mines:  

National Coal Board (NCB) vesting date 1st January 1947
British Coal 1st May 1986 (re-named), wound up 1997

Privatisation once more:

RJB Mining 1st January 1994 – 30th April 2001
UK Coal 1st May 2001
