Carbide Lamps

Dear Fionn,
We found your website while I was searching to find the actual word "Carbide". My husband aged 78 was reminiscing about his childhood during the war and playing with carbide in bottles with water and hanging them down through holes in ceilings in bombed houses and watching them explode.

If they failed to explode, some very brave or foolish boy would pull it back up and check why it had failed.

My husband, Malcolm, whose father had a pub, remembers it was bottles from Northampton brewery that were used.

Also, they thought it was a great "wheeze" putting carbide in inkwells, which ended in trips to the Headmaster.

He remembered all this clearly but was having difficulty with the name of the substance.
