Mines Rescue - Those Who Died

Names, Bilsthorpe Disaster 1927

Hello - I enjoyed (if that's the right word) reading about the Bilsthorpe Sinking Disaster. John William Thacker was my uncle - my father and another uncle all worked on the sinking at Bilsthorpe.

I think you might have copied the list of names from the memorial service sheet. There are a few mistakes.

The list of victims of the 1927 Bilsthorpe Disaster doesn't tally with the memorial. Fourteen men were killed but you list 16.

There was no Daniel Addcock and no Patrick Kelly Robinson.

I think the Daniel Addock on the memorial was really spelt Haddock. It is spelt this way in contemporary newspaper reports.

There was a Thomas Satchwell, but not a Thomas Stachwell.

The correct spelling is "Grufferty" not Gruffarty as it is spelt on both the memorial and the list.

Thanks for a very interesting site.

I enclose photo copies of newspaper articles written at the time for ease of reference. All of it came from the Local Studies Library in Mansfield.

Cheers, Bob Thacker
