Diane Marriott - Samuel Marriott, Killed Renishaw Park Colliery 1909

From: Diane Marriott
Sent: 3 February 2011
Subject: Samuel Marriott, Killed Renishaw Park Colliery 1909

Hello
I’m hoping you can help me, I am researching my family tree and when I received my great grandfathers death certificate, it gave the cause of death as ''accidently crushed by some runaway full tubs'' this happened on the 20th August 1909 at No.3 pit, Renishaw Park Collieries to Samuel Marriott of 23, Dronfield Rd. Eckington.
The inquest was held on the 25th Aug 1909, but I am trying to find out if there is a record of the accident any-where in the mine archives that would provide information about the circumstances... was he killed instantly? Above or below ground? Time of day, in fact anything would be appreciated.

Thank you very much,
Diane Marriott in Queensland Australia.

His father was Rhodes Marriott, born about 1822, Walton, Derbyshire. Occupation: Coal Miner as still was aged 79.
His mother was Mary born about 1816, Eckington, Derbyshire, died between 1891 and 1901.
Samuel was widowed somewhere between 1886 and 1891and went back to live with his parents.
He had a son Alfred Marriott born about 1886. By 1901 he was aged 15 and an underground colliery labourer.

Hi Fionn re-Marriott query. He is on my data base and this detail is from HMI annual report 1909.

Renishaw Park {Deep Soft Coal} August 20 1909

Samuel Marriott, 52, dataller, A train of 22 tubs left the pass bye and went 30 yards up an engine plane rising
1 in 6 towards the shaft, when the haulage rope broke. The drag placed at the back of the tubs failed to hold the train, and they ran back into the pass bye where deceased was crushed between other full tubs when the runaway train ran into them.

An inquest report will be in the Derbyshire Times around that date, if she phones Chesterfield Library they may be able to send her a copy, if not the next time I visit that Library I will copy it for her, but I don’t know when that will be.

Cheers A B
