Gresford Disaster 1934.

Gresford colliery after the explosion on September 22, 1934, which killed 265 men. The cause of the disaster was never known as inspection was impossible.

My grandfathers and their fathers were miners in the Notts and Derbys coal mines. My uncles and two of my brothers worked in those mines too. At one time in the 1950s, I worked as a hospital orderly in Mansfield, and I remember the wounded miners, crushed in roof falls, who were brought into the wards and put into black blankets so that the coal dust did not mark hospital white sheets.
