Old Miner Long Gone - But Searching For Relatives in Blidworth Area

If through your site I could find my Mums relatives then thank you. She came from a humble mining family.

Hello, I am trying to find out the whereabouts of my deceased mother, Doris Wallace (nee Holmes) brothers and sisters (younger relatives) who lived at, I think, 30 (?) Robin Hood Road, Blidworth, Nr. Mansfield Notts circa 1930 onwards. The name was Holmes and her fathers name I think in full is John William Holmes (His Wife was called Anne or Annie) He Was employed as a Collier (miner). It was a large family consisting of around 12 children.

Many would now be deceased or in their late 70's early 80's.

Any information please contact the son/daughter :- JwTalisman@aol.com

Doris's brothers & Sisters are listed below to the best of our knowledge:- Most are now deceased.

All Holmes:-
Doris, Ron, Keith, Trevor (worked down pits), Jack, Joan, Yvonne, Ailsa, Shirley, Arthur, Ennis.

Thanks
John. W. Wallace & Mrs. Maria Wallace

John Bentham who lived in Standish near Wigan

My family have been associated with the Lancashire and Yorkshire mines for generations. I am trying to find information about my great, great, great grandfather John Bentham who lived in Standish near Wigan. He was born about 1800; is there anywhere that keeps records of workers in the mines from about 1815 that you know of?

Also he is described on 2 marriage certificates as firstly an underlooker and then an overlooker. Can you explain what these mean?

Many thanks,

Lynne (nee Bentham)

Hi Fionn,
Underlooker, is a man employed to supervise the underground workings of a mine. He was responsible directly to the manager or the owner.

Overlooker or overman, A mine official between a deputy and the undermanager.

Best wishes,
John Lumsdon

P.S. There may be records in archives in the Wigan area.

Dennis Duke, Jump near to Hoyland Nether

Hi Fionn,

I am the granddaughter of a miner by the name of Dennis Duke who was born in Hoyland Nether Yorkshire in 1895.

He mined in the area and also lived in Jump near to Hoyland Nether. I would love to know which colliery he worked at.

I have a feeling he died of a heart attack but don’t know if he was mining at the time.

Do you have a list of miner’s names or does anyone know of Dennis Duke. Any information would be great.

Thanks

Tracy

Where can I find names of killed miners, Grassmoor Derbyshire 1933?

Hi my name is Mary; I am looking for a name or names of miners that have been killed in Pit Accidents. All the Pits are mentioned where the accidents occurred but no names of the dead miners???

Can you suggest how I can get this information?

My grandad was killed in the Grassmoor Derbyshire 1933 disaster, but I can not find out how to get a list of all the miners that were killed or injured.

Regards Mary

All I can find is that the accident was on 19 Nov 1933 in Derbyshire at Grassmoor Colliery, Deep Hand seam, No. 8.
There was a pit explosion, firedamp, but the cause of the ignition is not certain, possibly electric cap-lamp headpiece. 14 died.
Information from Durham Mining Museum
