Enjoyed reading your article on the collieries around Eastwood.

My Grandfather, Ezra Naylor, worked in these Collieries for all of his working life. Two of his brothers drowned in Moorgreen Reservoir and I am trying to find information about the incident. I don’t suppose you have come across any information about the drowning or have any idea where I might look?

Ralph Skinner

My wife is from this area and says her grandmother, Alethia Smith, born 1900, told her about an incident when she was just a girl.  Someone, or it might have been two, drowned in Moorgreen Reservoir and the kids were paid a penny-a-piece to search for the bodies, which might or might not have been Ezra’s brothers.  But that is all she knows, very sketchy.

Looking For Information, the Barker Family, Bradford Mine

Dear Sir/Madam
I have just come across this site as I have begun to carry on my father's attempt at family history.
I know my father went down the pit after school, but couldn't bear it, despite my grandad and great grandad being miners. My uncle stuck it a little longer, but he too soon left.

I was hoping for information regarding the pit names, and even more hopefully, photos of miners they might be on. I have no photo's of them as they were all lost when the family moved.

Their names were Edward Ashton Barker (hewer), William Barker (coal mine labourer) William and Eric Barker.

Is there someone I can contact for further help/advice? Any help would be very much appreciated as all the male members of the family (except my younger brother) have died.

Regards

Carolyn Thompson

James Davis (1905 - 1978) Mines Inspector, North East of England

Hello,
My name is Simon Davis and I am researching my family tree. I am looking for more information on my grandfather James Davis who was a mines inspector.

He lived from May 1st 1905 till 1978.

He worked around the North East of England and his last colliery was at Westoe, South Shields.
My dad has said in his forty years as an inspector my grandfather never lost a case in finding who was at fault for accidents down the pit. He was even on the queen’s honours list but would not go down to London because my grandmother wouldn't leave the house!!

If you have any information on this great man I would be grateful.

Regards Simon Davis

Dear sir,

Great if you could help, thanks. His name was George Matthew Marsden.

r u able to help - Walter Worthy Morgan killed at Llanhilleth Colleriery Abertillery 1907

I am researching a family member who was killed in a fall of coal on 8th March 1907 at Llanhilleth Colleriery Abertillery - I believe these are the correct spellings.
His name was Walter Worthy Morgan, he was 20 years old.
I would expect that there had to be an inquest, would you be able to tell me where I might be able to obtain a copy of the findings?

Many thanks Bronwen.

Mining Accidents - Walter Morgan

Name: Walter Morgan
Age: 20
Date: 08/03/1907
Occupation: Collier
Colliery: Lanhilleth
Owner: Partridge Jones and Co Ltd
Town: County: Monmouth

Notes: Fall of coal from the face of their working place in the Black Vein where the seam was about 7.5 feet thick with l0 inches of clod above it. The coal was worked on the face slip and overhung about a yard. The lump which fell measured about 7 feet across the face and had both ends loose.
Against this there was only one sprag which was totally insufficient. Prior to the 1901-6 strike this colliery enjoyed considerable immunity from this class of accident under the same conditions, but whatever the cause, since the resumption of work there have been several (2) killed
