Richard Whitling, 11 Dec 1914, aged 47, Coal-cutting Machineman, Deceased was at the back-end of a coal-cutting machine in a seam 2 feet 7 inches thick with a strong shale roof, at a point about halfway between the ends of a crossgate and a newly formed gateway. The machine was running when without warning the roof, over a length of 15 feet, 4 feet wide and 2 feet thick, collapsed in one piece burying the machine and killing deceased instantly. There was a well defined slip at one end of the fall and breaks formed the other three sides of it. His brother (James Rusell) was killed the previous year at Lambton D Pit,

Notes:
The deceased were taking out a pillar in a 4-foot seam and were engaged in kirving in the coal when both coal and stone above it came away for a length of 13 feet and fell upon them, killing them on the spot; they had undercut beyond a "breaker" which liberated the fall, and apparently had not set sufficient sprags to the face, which was overhanging at the start [Sunderland Echo reports: accident - 02 Jun 1913 pg 6 col 2; inquest - 04 Jun 1913 pg 3 col 3]

Occupation: Rolleywayman, a miner whose business it was to attend to the rolley-way, a road or path sufficiently high for a horse, and keep it in order. It was also his duty to see that no time was lost in getting the full waggons to the shaft and the empty ones in-bye again.

Notes:
Thomas was walking outbye at the end of his shift, when he was overtaken and caught by the front end of a full set of tubs travelling at about 4 miles per hour; the road was provided with proper refuge holes, and the clear space at the side required by the Coal Mines Act; there was nothing to show how, or why, deceased should have been caught by the set, but he was alone, and it seems likely that he had lost his light and so could not find a place of refuge.

Thomas was a single man, and lived in lodgings.
His wages were about 2s. 9d. for 8 hours, or 3s. 4d. if he stood 12 hours, his average weekly wage was £1/8/3, and three years at this average amounted to £220/7/0.
A claim was made by a brother. The owners offered £6.
It was decided to leave the case to the two Secretaries to settle the amount to be paid for funeral expenses.
