SADDLER William - 1908 - 07/03/1908 – Age 20 - Pennyvenie No.3 Miner, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. While, holing the coal gave way and fell on him. It is said that it broke over three sprags set to support it.

SADLER Samuel - 1909 - 14/04/1909 – Age 46 - Wingate Grange Hewer, Wingate Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham His hip was bruised by a piece of stone falling upon him on April 14th. He was off work until May 10th. He then worked regularly until August 27th. On the day following, he was admitted to the Hartlepool Hospital where an operation for appendicitis was performed. He died on August 31st at midnight. Death was said to be accelerated by the accident he had received on April 14th.

SAGE Henry - 1908 - 09/04/1908 – Age 14 - Norton Hill Shots Boy, Norton Hill Colliery Co., Somerset. Explosion of firedamp or coaldust. 10 killed.

SAINTHOUSE Paul - 1904 - 16/09/1904 – Age 45 - Ravensworth Hewer, Charles Perkins and Partners, Co.Durham. Deceased appears to have been sitting on his cracket in a longwall place kyrving in the bottom coal of the Beaumont seam, which has the following section - ramble 2 inches, top coal 2 feet 1 inch, band 9 inches, and bottom coal 1 foot. The band, top coal and ramble overhung for a length of 8 feet and a depth of 2 feet, and this overhanging mass fell on him, causing such injuries that he died the same day. The fall came away from an ordinary bordways cleet or facing, and a keen parting above the ramble. Sprags should have been set, but he appears to have neglected this precaution. The Local Inspectors reported "We, the undersigned, think it was a pure accident."

SALATHIEL Daniel - 1907 - 06/03/1907 – Age 60 - Llanerch Labourer, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in a working place in the Meadow vein where there is 7.5 feet of coal with 20 inches of clod above it. The top or engine coal, 18 inches thick, is left on as a roof only 6 feet of coal being worked. Deceased and others were engaged stowing or filling up a length behind the face when the fall occurred. The roof was unusually friable owing to approaching old fairly well timbered workings and apparently flats would have been desirable instead of caps on the props otherwise for ordinary conditions the place seemed to be fairly well timbered.

SALES John - 1909 - 23/07/1909 – Age 34 - Netherseal Stallman, Netherseal Colliery Co. Ltd., Leicestershire. Deceased was entering a waste for the purpose of getting roof coal down when a fall ran three props out and killed him.

SALLEY Robert - 1904 - 16/06/1904 – Age 46 - Walker Master Wasteman, Walker Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. After the deepening of the Jane pit was finished and while the Busty seams were being opened out a cage holding one tub and running in two wire rope guides at one side was in use, between the surface and the Busty seams, the Low Main seam still being used as a landing place. The cage had close latticed sides a bar along the top for holding on by and a chain was provided for use across the open ends. Deceased came to the Low Main landing and assisted the waiter-on to send some tubs to the Busty and also two kibbles to the Beaumont where sinkers were engaged sinking a staple to the Busty. Afterwards he got into the cage to ascend to the surface and appears to have sat on his haunches leaning on his yard stick but with 110 hold of the cross bar. When the cage started he was noticed by the waiter-on to move one of his feet as though rearranging his position and immediately after when the cage had moved up about 12 feet he called to the waiter-on and then fell out of the cage sideways landing on the flat sheets at the Low Main underneath a chain fencing the shaft and then fell to the bottom of the shaft a distance of 44 fathoms where his body was found by the master sinker from the staple who on being informed of the accident descended to the bottom of the shaft in the cage.

SALLISH Frank - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 36 - Cambrian No.1 Ostler, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

SALMON William - 1909 - 12/08/1909 – Age 39 - Sherburn House Hewer, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was killed at the face of a gateway immediately on returning to the place after firing a shot. The shot he had fired had been, contrary to the regulations, drilled in the solid and was a flanking hole; it had been heavily charged and when fired had knocked out several of the props and so caused the roof to fall and kill him.

SALT James - 1902 - 15/12/1902 – Age 50 - Great Fenton Contractor, Stafford Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed by tub in jig dip through breakage of a clivvie link in chain.

SALT Joseph - 1909 - 21/12/1909 – Age 16 - Salterwood Horse Driver, Denby Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Two empty tubs became detached from the horse and running back 60 yards to a junction, knocked out a prop supporting a bearing bar, and a fall of roof killed deceased who was inside the first tub. A drag was supplied but deceased failed to use it, and he appears to have taken it off the back of the tubs after passing the corporal.

SALTER Edward - 1905 - 24/06/1905 – Age 23 - Coneygre No. 126 Pikeman, Latham and Whitehouse, Staffordshire. Killed by gob-stink and blackdamp.

SALTERS Williamson * - 1904 - 12/07/04 - Hylton Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham.

SALTON Walter - 1901 - 11/12/1901 – Age 17 - Loanhead Drawer, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. The roof in a longwall place in a highly inclined seam fell and swept out some wooden pillars on the rise side of the level and buried deceased who was assisting the miner in the place to move a hutch.

SAMPLE Arthur - 1906 - 30/08/1906 – Age 33 - Dean & Chapter Greaser, Bolckow, Vaughan & Co., Co.Durham. When oiling the bearings of a revolving shaft, his sleeve was caught by a stud, and he was whirled round and round and then thrown into a truck. He died the same day in hospital.

SAMPSON Edward John - 1905 - 11/07/1905 – Age 17 - National No.2 Collier Boy, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported on by E Milner-Jones, FA Gray and JT Robson. 119 killed. 42, Hillside Terrace, Wattstown, buried at Llethrddu Cemetery on Saturday.

SAMUEL Evans - 1906 - 23/1905/1906 – Age 37 - Nine Mile Point Collier, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While holing some coal, against which three sprags were set, it burst out and falling upon him caused instantaneous death.

SAMUEL Hoyland - 1905 - 09/09/1905 – Age 21 - Park Hill Collier, Victoria Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He had got into the cage at the top of the shaft to descend to his work and the cage, before it reached the ground level, in descending caught one of the blocks which caused it to tilt and he slipped out and fell to the bottom of the shaft.

SAMUEL John - 1905 - 29/06/1905 – Age 39 - Garw Timberman, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell into a shaft at a mid-landing while attempting to get on the cage.

SAMUEL John - 1907 - 27/02/1907 – Age 21 - Pont Henry Collier, Pont Henry Colliery Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Fall of roof at face. A portion of the shale roof measuring 6 feet by 2 feet 6 inches by 11 inches in thickness fell upon him. He died next day from the injuries received. There were no roof supports near the place. There was neglect on the part of deceased in this case. Gwendreth seam. Safety lamps.

SAMUEL Thomas - 1907 - 09/10/1907 – Age 27 - Aberaman Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff, 6.5 feet by 3.5 feet by 17 inches thick, fell from between three slips, one of which had run up through the coal into the roof as he worked some coal from under one end of it. I think if he had tried the roof he would have had found it ‘given’ the lad who worked with him had not seen him try it that day. Died 18th Oct. Yard Seam.

SAMUEL Thomas - 1909 - 15/07/1909 – Age 26 - Dillwyn Haulier, Dillwyn Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While hauling out three trams loaded with coal, along a level roadway, he probably fell off the "gun" upon which he was riding; he was found later suffering from a fractured skull, and died the same day.

SAMUEL W. - 1900 - 19/02/1900 – Age 59 - Dare Doorman, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by a journey of empty trams against the door which he was attending having failed to open it in time. Died February 24th.

SAMUEL William - 1909 - 16/02/1909 – Age 17 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 4 Ann Street, Stanley.

SAMUELS John - 1902 - 25/11/1902 – Age 59 - Priors Lee, Staffordshire. No.2 Filler, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Burnt by an explosion of firedamp at the working face in the Little Flint seam. Died 2nd December. Gas ignited by the naked light of an illegally opened safety lamp.

SAMUELS Thomas - 1908 - 20/1/1908 – Age 15 - Murton, Wayend Lad, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was caught and killed by a set as he was walking outbye; he neglected to get refuge in a manhole, and it is not certain that he was not riding on the set.

SANDALL William - 1906 - 13/10/1906 – Age 70 - Glascote Dataller, Glascote Colliery Co., Warwickshire. Fall of coal. Fall of side and roof coal in a heading while preparations were being made to set a prop.

SANDERS Hulme - 1909 - 18/02/1909 – Age 51 - Brereton, Brick Kiln Stallman, Earl of Shrewsbury, Staffordshire. Killed at work.

SANDERS Joseph - 1904 - 05/01/1904 – Age 42 - Bedford, Six Feet Dataller, J Speakman and Sons, Lancashire. Whilst repairing in the level a stone, which overhung 18 inches, broke off at the prop and fell to a tub and slid therefrom onto his foot. The stone ought to have been got down. Died from erysipelas 20th January. (Average roof.)

SANDERSON John – 1900 – 27/12/1900 – Age 25 – Seafield Oil Shale Miner, Pumpherston Oil Co., Linlithgow. Deceased had lighted a holing shot with white taped fuse which had evidently hung fire. He appeared to have returned to the place within 30 minutes and to have been within three feet of the shot when it exploded killing him instantly.

SANDERSON John William – 1909 – 11/02/1909 – Age 39 – Wharncliffe Silkstone Labourer, Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was enlarging a road, and after trying to get a large stone down he was setting a prop to secure it when it fell and killed him.

SANDERSON W. – 1903 – 28/03/1903 – Age 42 – Victoria, Sandstone Quarry Quarryman, BB Booth, Yorkshire. With others Sanderson was lifting a large stone off a bogie with a crane. The stone slipped as there was no one at the break, the handle flew round and killed deceased.

SANDHAM William – 1903 – 14/09/1903 – Age 28 – Outfields Hewer, Outfields Colliery Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Deceased and his father were working together in a place, 7 yards wide in the Cannel Band, when about 2 tons of coal fell from the face and caught him breaking his neck. The coal that fell had been kirved under on the Saturday and a shot fired which only brought part of the coal down. They had filled away the loose coals but had not supported the coal that fell.

SANDS C. – 1900 – 05/09/1900 – Age 47 – Warren House Collier, John Brown and Co., Yorkshire. Fall of side.

SANDS George – 1900 – 30/08/1900 – Age 38 – Llanbradach Collier, Cardiff Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of a large stone at the face from a greasy slant, probably shaken by a bump. There were at least two or three posts under it and there may have been one or two more. They were preparing a cog at the place but had not completed it. 2 killed.

SANDWITH John – 1908 – 26/03/1908 – Age 64 – Brayton Domain Deputy, Joseph Harris, Cumberland. Fall of roof stone while drawing timber.

SATCHWEEL Aaron – 1905 – 07/07/1905 – Age 62 – Bargoed Fitter, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. In consequence of the breakage (at a flaw) of the chain belonging to a chain block, by which the main exhaust tube of a new set of coke ovens was temporarily suspended, the tubs in the erection of which he was engaged fell and crushed him. The weight on the blocks was well within its working load.

SAUNDERS Elias - 1903 - 24/03/1903 – Age 58 - Abercarn Collier, Monmouth. Died in January after an operation in a London hospital for a cancerous growth in the head. It was alleged that he injured his head on the 24th March, 1903, but evidence of this was so slight that I do not consider the case should be treated as a colliery accident.

SAUNDERS Henry - 1900 - 20/09/1900 – Age 21 - North Devon (clay) Fireman, North Devon Clay Co. Ltd., Devon. A small locomotive, on which he and one of the clay workers were riding from the pits to the stores, left the line and turned over. It resulted apparently from their going at too great a speed for the condition of the line. The rails are light and the sleepers are not satisfactory for running locomotives upon at a greater speed than four or five miles an hour.

SAUNDERS John - 1900 - 21/07/1900 – Age 13 - Deep Navigation South Door Boy, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Knocked down by a haulage rope and run over by a journey while passing. Died in ten days.

SAUNDERS Sam - 1909 - 31/03/1909 – Age 38 - Maltby Main Sinker, Maltby Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. The three men were ascending a sinking pit in a hoppit. The hoppit caught a pump staging, 77 yards from the surface. Saunders and Orton were thrown out and fell to the bottom of the shaft, a distance of 310 yards. Simons remained in the hoppit but was killed by the impact. 3 killed.

SAUNDERS Walter - 1904 - 29/07/1904 – Age 42 - Enderly Mill, Granite Quarry Quarryman, Enderly & Stoney Stanton Granite Co., Leicestershire. One man was lowering the other down the face of rock for the purpose of making an examination after shot firing, when the ledge on which the lower man was standing collapsed, and both men fell down the face. 2 killed.

SAVAGE A. - 1905 - 05/06/1905 – Age 21 - West Riding Filler, Pope and Pearson Ltd., Yorkshire. His spine was fractured by a fall of roof at a slip. Died 11th July.

SAVAGE Israel - 1903 - 30/06/1903 – Age 45 - Agecroft Collier, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway, nine yards from the face, they had lifted a tub on the rails when a great crump in the roof occurred, four bars displaced 4 feet apart. (Bad roof.) 2 killed.

SAVAGE John Thomas - 1904 - 27/05/1904 – Age 46 - Bowden Close Hewer, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of stone close to the coal face caused a slight cut and bruise on his foot on April 8th last. Nothing was thought of it at the time but symptoms of blood poisoning set in and he died on May 27th.

SAVAGE Matthew - 1901 - 23/01/1901 – Age 37 - Kirkwood Miner, Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. He entered a disused heading, which was not fenced off, and had not been inspected by the fireman. His naked light ignited an accumulation of firedamp.

SAVAGE Michael - 1904 - 15/08/1904 – Age 38 - Craighead No.2 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When he ascending the shaft a wooden prop fell from the surface struck him and knocked him out of the cage.

SAVAGE Peter - 1904 - 16/02/1904 – Age 22 - Earnock No.1 Miner, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. While connecting the firing cable to the fuse of a roberite shot the shotfirer, thinking he had retired, fired the shot.

SAVAGE Thomas - 1905 - 11/08/1905 – Age 59 - Seaham Windwayman, Londonderry Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. When turning some broken tubs aside on an incline, a pony loosed from work and going out-bye uncontrolled by its driver galloped past him. A crook or hook at the end of its side chain caught him by the leg, pulled him over and dragged him out-bye for a distance of 284 yards. The hook had meantime ripped his leg down to the boot. He died shortly after reaching home.

SAVAGE William - 1902 - 16/1905/1902 – Age 58 - Cossall Roadsman, Cossall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased received a slight injury in the mine during August 1901 and at the coroner's inquest it was found that he died from natural causes, heart disease.

SAVAGE William - 1906 - 20/01/1906 – Age 51 - Hafod Roadsman, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He attempted to oil the haulage curve, when in motion when he got drawn in by the rope and severely crushed. He expired February 6th, 1906, after amputation.

SAWRIES Brone - 1903 - 18/12/1903 – Age 25 - Dechmont No.1 Miner, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof from brushing face.

SAWYER Atkinson - 1906 - 03/01/1906 – Age 56 - Savile Collier, Henry Briggs Son and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Died in Leeds Infirmary from the effects of a strain received while levelling a flat sheet in the pit on December 22nd. He was using his pick as a lever, and placed his foot upon one end of the blade and was pulling at the shaft when it broke, and he fell back against a prop.

SAWYER Henry - 1907 - 10/01/1907 – Age 43 - Shelton Deep Collier, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased, who was contractor for the section, and reputed to be an exceptionally careful and skilful miner, was cleaning up some soft dirt in front of an unholed longwall face in a seam about 4 feet in thickness, when a rate or slab of coal, 6 feet long 2 feet thick at top, diminishing to a few inches at the bottom, came away from a slip joint in the coal set down, and toppled over crushing his head against a prop. The place was in faulty ground but the slip had not been detected previously.

SAXTON Robert Meynell – 1904 – 30/05/1904 – Age 29 – Coppice No.1 Dataller, Shipley Colliery Co., Derbyshire. He was rebuilding a pack at the side of a roadway, when the side rolled off and killed him.

SAXTON William Henry – 1909 – 07/12/1909 – Age 37 – Wyken Stallman, Wyken Colliery Co. Ltd., Warwickshire. Deceased had taken out three sprags for the purpose of falling the coal, 16 feet from end to end. He put the ringer over the top to pull them over and was standing where one of the sprags had been renewed and the holing terminated when the coal, which had been holed, fell and a second fall which fell up to a black slip where the coal was not holed, caught and killed the deceased.

SAYLE Charles – 1909 – 08/12/1909 – Age 61 – Whitehaven Screen inspector, Whitehaven Coal Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Hand caught in belt. Died 21st March 1910.

SCADDEN George R – 1904 – 24/12/1904 – Naval Harbour Works, Horse driver, Messrs. W. Hill and Company, Portland, Dorset. Died suddenly from heart failure when at work on the 24th December.

SCAIFE F. – 1904 – 26/01/1904 – Age 30 – Sandy Bank, Sandstone Quarry Quarryman, Ward Chippendale, Yorkshire. He was standing upon some sloping dirt, undermining the face of the baring, when part of the place slipped off and caught him causing him to lose his balance and fall off the baring ledge to the bottom of the Quarry, 35 feet below. Died on the 30th instant.

SCALLAN Richard – 1900 – 03/09/1900 – Age 19 – Eston Ironstone Driver, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. N.R. Bringing a waggon out from the face and had just put a sprag into the wheel when the waggon left the rails and broad sided on to him and killed him instantly.

SCANLON Peter – 1906 – 02/04/1906 – Age 45 – Morrison, South Moor Hewer, South Moor Colliery Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was engaged firing a shot when it exploded more quickly than he had expected. His face, arms and legs were burned and he died ten days afterwards.

SCARBUTTS George – 1904 – 18/01/1904 – Age 27 – Bickershaw No.4 Drawer, Ackers Whitley and Co., Leigh, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was filling a tub of coal at the lower side of the pillar when the roof gave way capping the props, set about four feet apart, and killing him.

SCARD John Henry – 1908 – 31/03/1908 – Age 55 – Ellerbeck Brakeman, Ellerbeck Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Knocked down by wagons pushed by a locomotive engine. Deceased had signalled the engineman to go on and he expected the wagons to go on another line of rails. He had omitted to open the points, but thought he had. With his back to the travelling wagons he moved in front of them. It was very windy at the time. Had the engineman whistled perhaps deceased would have looked and seen the wagons were on a wrong line.

SCARGILL James – 1908 – 30/01/1908 – Age 22 – Lofthouse Pony Driver, Lofthouse Colliery Ltd., Yorkshire. He was putting a locker into the wheel of a tub when it was moving and his finger was accidentally tripped between the locker and the tub. The injury did not appear to be serious at the time though the finger was badly crushed and the skin broken. Blood poisoning of a malignant type supervened and he died on February 29th.

SCARLET John Close – 1901 – 08/02/1901 – Age 40 – Auckland Park Hewer, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Alleged to have died from effects of injuries received while following his employment on the 20th April but post mortem examination showed he died from natural causes.

SCHIEL William – 1901 – 24/1905/1901 – Universal Ostler, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway, Cd 947. 81 killed.

SCHNEIDER George – 1903 – 11/08/1903 – Age 36 – Dawdon Labourer, Londonderry Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was assisting to erect a new machine when part of it, through a piece of timber breaking, fell and killed him.

SCHOFIELD Arthur – 1909 – 23/03/1909 – Age 16 – Ackton Hall Driver, Ackton Hall Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was found dead under a set of full tubs which he was taking out-bye with a pony. It is probable that he slipped when in front of the tubs.

SCHOFIELD Edgar – 1908 – 21/09/1908 – Age 23 – Stanley Clipper, Stanley Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. In tightening a clip on a full train of tubs when in motion, he got his head caught between the top of a tub and a bar supporting the roof and was killed. He ought to have signalled to the engineman to stop the rope before attempting to tighten the clip. It is a very low road, and the danger in working about tubs in motion was thereby greatly increased.

SCHOFIELD F. – 1900 – 17/09/1900 – Age 21 – Britannia (Sandstone Quarry) Quarrier, Brooks and Brooks, Lancashire. Crushed by wagon against side, whist lowering it. Want of room. Died 18th. September.

SCHOFIELD Henry – 1902 – 19/08/1902 – Age 40 – New Brampton Proprietor, Henry Schofield, Yorkshire. Suffocated by blackdamp when examining a disused shaft which he proposed to reopen.

SCHOFIELD John – 1907 – 22/11/1907 – Age 39 – Hewlett No.2 Collier, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall in drawing road, 6 yards from face, whilst pushing behind full tubs, his son was pulling at front of tub. A stone 4 feet square pulled over a prop and fell on his head and shoulders forcing him face downwards to the floor. The stone fell from lip of ripping, had it a bar secured this the accident would probably not have happened. (Roof bad).

SCHOFIELD Lister – 1907 – 10/1905/1907 – Age 19 – Parkhill Pony driver, Victoria Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was going to have a meal and in order to sit on a tool box, within a fence protecting a haulage rope wheel and a pump, he got through the fence and was caught by the haulage rope and fatally injured. The fence was a very good protection and the deceased should not have gone through it.

SCHOFIELD P. – 1900 – 15/12/1900 – Age 14 – Park Farm Screen Boy, Heckmondwike Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He was climbing up, to get inside a wagon during shutting operation, and was caught between it and another wagon.

SCHOFIELD W. – 1901 – 04/01/1901 – Age 33 – Wombwell Main Collier, Wombwell Main Coal Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof in working face. Cause, a slip.

SCHOFIELD William – 1901 – 02/10/1901 – Age 73 – Barnsley Main Shaftsman, Barnsley Main Colliery Co., Yorkshire. Fell from cage while working in the shaft.

SCHOLES Thomas – 1907 – 31/10/1907 – Age 53 – Clyde, Backmuir No.2 Roadsman, Wilsons and Clyde Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while repairing it.

SCHOLFIELD John Smith - 1904 - 25/07/1904 – Age 22 - North Seaton Hewer, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. This accident occurred in a district of pillars in the Low Main seam which had been lost by creep and was won out again from a different direction and the taking out of the pillars recommenced. Deceased's lift had holed into an old jenkin and while he was pulling some coal off the face a large fall of blue metal stone, 19 feet long by 5 feet wide and 3 feet thick, triangular in section, took place from the roof and fell upon him, another hewer in the place escaping unhurt. The stone fell about half in the lift and half in the old jenkin. Four pair of gears were set under it in the lift the planks of which were broken and the outbye end of the stone rested on a tub in the place. The fall came away at a jack and a slip both of which were visible before the fall took place, the slip running through the seam as well as extending into the roof. The deputy had visited the place during the shift and there was loose timber at hand. The Local Inspectors reported ‘in our opinion it was a pure accident no one being in any way to blame.

SCHROEDER Arthur - 1909 - 01/01/1909 – Age 41 - Graig Merthyr Collier, Graigola Merthyr Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 5 killed.

SCOBBIE Thomas - 1906 - 11/12/1906 – Age 21 - Gilbertfield Engineer, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. While inside a dross conveyor, repairing it, the engine was started and he got caught.

SCOBIE James - 1908 - 19/08/1908 – Age 24 - Arthur Repairer, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased and a fireman were engaged making repairs on a main roadway where there was considerable pressure, this pressure broke a bar causing a fall and he was buried beneath it.

SCOBLE William - 1901 - 03/1905/1901 – Age 38 - Caerau Collier, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, while about to put up a cog a fall occurred from a bed of clift causing such injuries that he died the next day. Six feet seam.

SCOTT Albert - 1908 - 30/11/1908 – Age 55 - Stanley Byeworkman, Stanley Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. A large fall had occurred during the week end on a haulage road and these, with about 16 other men, were engaged in clearing it away when a second fall occurred and killed these four men. The first fall was 82 feet long by 9 feet 6 inches wide by 19 inches thick the second was 10 feet long by 6 feet wide by 12 inches thick. No precautions were taken to protect the men working at the first beyond sounding the roof above them from time to time. 4 killed.

SCOTT Alexander - 1906 - 30/04/1906 – Age 40 - Dumbreck Labourer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Stirling. A scaffold was being erected on the dirt bing. He stepped upon a plank, which had just been sawn through, and fell 20 feet.

SCOTT Anthony - 1909 - 16/02/09 – Age 46 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 3 Chester Rd.

SCOTT Archibald - 1908 - 18/07/1908 – Age 53 - Allhallows Hewer, Allerdale Coal Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Crushed against door frame by engine set.

SCOTT Arthur - 1904 - 31/07/1904 - Wooley Driver, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. He complained of having hurt his head in the pit by being thrown off a coal tub and afterwards suffered from meningitis which passed off but he died from typhoid fever and pneumonia.

SCOTT Bruce - 1906 - 19/10/1906 – Age 27 - High Hazels Corporal Nunnery Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. A full run of 10 tubs of coal was being lowered down a haulage road, and as they were passing the points at a level, the deceased was pushing against the tubs, one of the tubs got off the road and crushed him against the side of the level. Died November 23rd.

SCOTT David - 1902 - 28/03/1902 – Age 23 - Wellsgreen Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. The Dysart main coal is worked in two divisions first the lower part and second the upper part. Deceased worked in the lower and was about to put up a rance to the coal when it fell over and crushed him against the stowage in the waste.

SCOTT George – 1902 – 23/06/1902 – Age 66 – Bebside Labourer, Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Died 21st July. Deceased was assisting in emptying stones from a waggon. While letting down the bottom board his hand was crushed. Blood poisoning supervened, his arm was amputated but his life could not be saved.

SCOTT George – 1904 – 23/04/1904 – Age 21 – Bond’s Main Dataller, Staveley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was assisting to relay a roadway and was carrying a long rail to a place where it was to be laid when he was killed by a fall of roof.

SCOTT George – 1908 – 27/1905/1908 – Age 26 – Wallyford Miner, Edinburgh. Irruption of water. 2 killed.

SCOTT J. – 1900 – 31/05/1900 – Age 24 – Storth Labourer, D Sharratt and Sons, Yorkshire. Trying to force off a light belt when the machinery was in motion.
SCOTT James * – 1901 – 08/01/1901 – Foulford, Fife.

SCOTT James – 1903 – 02/04/1903 – Age 44 – Mains Fireman, Cross Tetley and Co., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He fired a shot of westfalite in the coal point where he stood on the roadway with the battery being in a line to the shot, at a distance of only 14 yards, without any protection, when a piece of coal flew from the shot severely injuring his head. He expired on the 11th instant.

SCOTT James – 1906 – 06/03/1906 – Age 38 – Silver Hill Stallman, Stanton Iron Works Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof while getting down coal in the working face. His left leg was fractured, and he died 20th March.

SCOTT James – 1909 – 15/11/1909 – Age 14 – Seaton Delaval Driver, Seaton Delaval Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Caught by a tub while assisting at the endless rope terminus.

SCOTT James – 1909 – 26/12/1909 – Age 35 – Bickershaw Coal Cutter, Ackers Whitley and Co., Leigh, Lancashire. Deceased was attending to the coal cutting machine, at the face of the workings, when the roof over the coal cutter fell upon him. An attempt will be made to set bars, with one end in the coal.

SCOTT John – 1900 – 29/01/1900 – Age 47 – Blaydon Main Labourer, Stella Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Inspection made. Five empty waggons were being pushed, by a locomotive into the coke yard in order to pick up two more empties when deceased, who was cleaning up small coals was run over. The engine driver did not observe deceased but neglected to blow his whistle.

SCOTT John – 1901 – 14/03/1901 – Age 25 – Niddrie Miner, Niddrie and Behar Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased had gone to the dip side of his place and withdrawn his sprags and in returning he passed between the face and a prop when the coal from which the sprags had been withdrawn came away and fatally crushed him against the prop.

SCOTT John – 1904 – 14/07/1904 – Age 15 – Prince of Wales, Brickearth Quarry Labourer, John Rhodes, Yorkshire. He got into the pan of the grinding machine to take out an ironstone ball when, by some means, the pan started to revolve and he was drawn under one of the rollers and so terribly injured that he died on August 8th.

SCOTT John – 1906 – 02/09/1906 – Age 22 – Houldsworth Drawer, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. While being lowered with other men in the cage, the engineman lost control of his engine. The valve gearing being reversed, the cage on landing in the bottom was at once raised 13 feet. Scott was crushed between the cage and a beam at the door heads and McDermont was also either similarly crushed or fell out. The overman, who was on the cage, was injured. 2 killed.

SCOTT Nathan – 1908 – 31/07/1908 – Age 15 – Kirkby Horse driver, Butterley Co. Ltd., Nottinghamshire. Deceased stood at the side of the roadway, while his train was drawn forward, and as there was not sufficient room he was crushed between the tubs and a prop. Died 2nd August.

SCOTT Robert – 1900 – 12/06/1900 – Age 21 – Kemnay (granite Quarry) Labourer, John Fyfe, Aberdeen. Deceased had occasion to pass from one side of the Quarry to the other but instead of going round about the hole, as instructed, he attempted to cross along the top of a narrow rib of granite which separated two holes respectively 300 and 130 feet in depth. The original surface at the entrance to this barrier had been covered to a depth of about 12 feet with debris from former excavations. While descending the slope of this debris it slipped from under his feet, he rolled down and fell to the bottom of the smaller hole striking several ledges as he fell. He had only been employed at the Quarry for about a week.

SCOTT Robert – 1905 – 13/1905/1905 – Age 17 – Trimdon Grange Assistant screenman, Walter Scott Ltd., Co.Durham. Died of double pneumonia, induced by a chill. No evidence of strain.

SCOTT Sam – 1900 – 22/02/1900 – Age 24 – Bolsover Dayman, Bolsover Colliery Co., Bolsover, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. The timbering at the gate end falling out liberated some of the roof which fell on deceased.

SCOTT Thomas – 1908 – 11/03/1908 – Age 54 – Florence Roofer, Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was taking down top coal in a waste in the Yard Seam and for this purpose was cutting out the coal over the head of a prop to permit its being drawn with a Sylvester. A piece of coal weighing about a ton suddenly came away from a slip and fell upon him, fracturing his spine. He succumbed four days later.

SCOTT Thomas – 1909 – 10/07/1909 – Age 38 – Kibblesworth Stoneman, John Bowes and Partners, Co.Durham. Fall of side stone.

SCOTT Walter – 1907 – 31/12/1907 – Age 56 – Lumphinnans Carter, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased were filling burning ashes into carts, from an ash bing at the colliery, when a slide took place and both were severely burned and subsequently died.

SCOTT Walter – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – Age 43 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 5 Chester Road, Stanley.

SCOTT William – 1902 – 10/11/1902 – Age 52 – Falcon, Iron Ore Miner, Wyndham Mining Co. Ltd., Cumberland. One side of the working place, which was about 14 feet high, consisted of solid ore, the worked out ground or goaf partly open being opposite. Props were set on this open side and backed up with stones and timber to within four feet of the roof. This protection proved inadequate as a large stone falling in the goaf knocked out a prop and caught deceased.

SCOTT William – 1902 – 23/01/1902 – Age 28 – Belhaven Brusher, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was preparing a charge of compressed powder for a brushing shot while his neighbour was collecting and removing the boring tools. The latter was alleged to have raised his head into a small cavity, close to the face of brushing and to have ignited a small quantity of firedamp, the explosion of which ignited 4 lbs. of compressed powder and nineteen cartridges of gelignite contained in the cartridge box with which deceased was working at the time. His cap, with an ordinary miner's lamp hooked to it, was afterwards found close to where he had been sitting. He sustained injuries to which he succumbed five days latter.

SCOTT William – 1903 – 07/08/1903 – Age 16 – Blairadam Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased and his father were about to fill a tub with coal when the roof suddenly collapsed. The roof was composed of a strong thick post of sandstone and took periodical breaks across the faces, it was one of such breaks which caused the accident.

SCOTT William – 1904 – 02/1905/1904 – Age 30 – Bardykes No.2 Brusher, Merry and Cuninghame Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at road head.

SCOTT William – 1904 – 06/10/1904 – Age 24 – Handen Hold Hewer, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased and another hewer had almost completed their shift in a lift in broken workings in the Busty seam when a stone, 6 feet by 4 feet and 1 foot 2 inches thick, fell from the roof upon him as he was standing in the fast nook of the place. The stone was a cauldron bottom and had glassy slips on three sides and broke off next to the face. The slips could not be detected before it fell. No timber, of which there was ample supply, was set under the stone but a prop and plank was set immediately next to it. The deputy had been in the place during the shift but the coal had not been taken below the stone. The Local Inspector reported 'there was plenty of timber and in our opinion it was an accident.'

SCOTT William – 1907 – 29/12/1907 – Age 52 – Lochhead Pitwright, Weymss Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Underground fire. 3 killed.

SCOTT William – 1909 – 16/02/09 – Age 22 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 16 Harvey Street.

SCOTT William - 1909 - 25/06/1909 – Age 19 - Orgreave Pony Driver, Rother Vale Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He was found crushed between the top of a tub and a girder. It is probable that when he was getting past the tub, after putting lockers in, the pony started.

SCOTT William B. - 1906 - 12/10/1906 – Age 46 - Willington Hewer, Strakers & Love, Co.Durham. When hewing in a bord, a ‘cauldron bottom’ fell from the roof and killed him.

SCOURFIELD Jonah - 1906 - 19/09/1906 – Age 19 - Abergorky Shackler, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased attempted to run in advance of a journey of coal, which was being drawn through the slum to the other side of the shaft, when he either fell or was knocked down, and run over.

SCRAGG Walter - 1906 - 31/07/1906 – Age 23 - Shelton Deep Collier, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was assisting to remove some loose timber from a waste in the Cockshead, previous to drawing the back row of posts. He was killed by a fall of roof which came from between two slips about 8 feet apart, and which broke a bar and reeled out two posts on which it was supported. The slips were invisible before the occurrence and two shot holes had been bored in the rock that fell, with a view to blasting it down after the withdrawal of the timber under it.

SCREECH Richard - 1908 - 16/03/1908 – Age 54 - Cumble Tor, Granite Quarry Fireman, John Steed, Cornwall. Fall of ground, about 10 tons, from above where they were working on a ledge, it carried them with it to the bottom. It was a bed of even rock, about a foot to eighteen inches thick which, being upright, came away at a bed into which water apparently had got and loosened it. Screech had full charge of the work. 2 killed.

SCREEN Daniel - 1904 - 21/11/1904 – Age 47 - South Wales Collier, Monmouth. Died from heart disease while at work at South Wales Colliery on the 29th September.

SCRIVEN William - 1904 - 18/01/1904 – Age 29 - Bedlinog No 1 Haulier, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. As deceased was riding on the gun, his head was caught between the coal in the tram and a low collar. He was drawn on top of the tram and crushed so badly that he died on the following day. The road, which had a height of 4 feet 10 inches under the collars was too low for riding on the gun and it should have been prohibited at least until the height had been increased.

SCULLION James - 1902 - 12/11/1902 – Age 30 - Dalmeny Oil Shale Miner, Dalmeny Oil Shale Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased and others were making a roadway through waste when the roof suddenly fell.

SCULLION James - 1903 - 11/09/1903 – Age 24 - Rosehall No.5 Miner, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Coming in contact with signal wires which had accidentally been charged with electricity from the power cables. 2 killed.

SCULLY James - 1902 - 10/06/1902 – Age 17 - George Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal, 8 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet, fell off a slip on one side of the heading. The seam was 11 feet thick and the sides ought to have been supported by props or double timbers. The nearest prop was 10 feet back from the face. A pounce occurred at the time. Nine feet seam.

SCURFIELD James - 1908 - 10/08/1908 – Age 35 - Pontop Loco. Fireman, John Bowes and Partners, Co.Durham. Crushed by truck at coke benches.

SEABRIDGE Joseph - 1903 - 21/10/1903 – Age 41 - Florence Dataler, Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof (stone) while repairing main haulage road in Yard seam. He was setting a middle prop under a broken bar when a heavy fall occurred and buried him.

SEAD T. - 1902 - 14/11/1902 – Age 38 - Park Hill Deputy, Victoria Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Died 17th November. Unexpected explosion of saxonite shot.

SEAGER George - 1909 - 06/01/1909 – Age 45 Coombe (Tovil), Clay Quarry Labourer, WH Benstead and Sons, Kent. Fall of brick earth at the face, which was about 6 feet high, where he was working. It occurred owing to the practice (which should not be allowed) of under-cutting and then falling the earth. In this case, as usual, the unexpected occurred, the earth fell over suddenly from a slip or "glassy vent" which was unseen.

SEAGRAVE William - 1905 - 10/05/1905 – Age 56 - Linby Roadsman, Linby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. A piece of coal fell down the shaft, and striking something at the bottom it rebounded and struck the deceased, who was uncoupling the loaded tubs three yards from the shaft inset. He died 12th May.

SEALE Reginald William - 1903 - 14/03/1903 – Age 32 - Sherwood, Sinking Pumpman, Sherwood Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Electrocution. Deceased appeared to have been attempting to couple the bare electric wires of a shot firing cable when a current of 440 volts was on and he received a shock which caused his death.

SEAMAN James - 1904 - 26/04/1904 – Age 29 - Bower Taker off, W and R Marland,  Lancashire. At the landing at the bottom of the engine brow. Whilst pushing an empty tub a stone, 6 feet by 4 feet, came away from a very pronounced slip, which ought to have been seen. (Good roof, at the face bad.)

SEAMAN Joseph - 1900 - 29/03/1900 – Age 28 - Steetley Loader, Shire Oaks Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof while deceased was working in the stall. Three other men were injured. The fall was very large and was probably due to a sudden weight coming over the stall.

SEARGENT Amos - 1905 - 19/12/1905 – Age 19 - South Wales Cwmtillery Labourer, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. Head fatally crushed between the flywheel of the engine in the granary-house and the flooring.

SEARR James - 1905 - 15/11/1905 – Age 25 - Medmosley Pony putter, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Run over by tracks on private railway riding on which is strictly prohibited.

SEARY Thomas - 1906 - 27/04/1906 – Age 35 - Lumphinnans Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Underground fire. 2 killed.

SEATON Henry - 1901 - 15/02/1901 – Age 55 - Hornethorpe Coke Drawer, J and G Wells Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased was crushed between waggons at the screens when his foot stuck in the rails.

SEDDON Edward - 1906 - 16/02/1906 – Age 56 - Pendlebury Dataller, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Along with another dataller, 60 years of age, they were taking off the side in a jig brew, repairing, 40 yards from the face, the tubs caught the side in passing. A stone, 6 feet by 5 feet by 1 foot thick, fell on to the back of deceased. Very probably the men had disturbed the sidepack upon which the stone depended, allowing it to fall without any warning. SEDDON John - 1907 - 08/08/1907 – Age 31 - Bradford Deep Collier, Bradford Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Ignition of gas at coal face, fireman lighting the fuse of a gunpowder shot, immediately the fuse was lit the gas ignited. He did not examine the place immediately before lighting the shot, relied on having passed through the place two hours previous. Gas issued from a break in the roof, 6 feet from the shot. Fireman was convicted of a breach of rules and fined 30s. Died 16th August.

SEDDON John - 1907 - 16/08/1907 – Age 56 - Martholme Collier, Great Harwood Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. At face of working place from between two pronounced breaks, both known, two props displaced, a bar should have been set. (Roof good)

SEDGEWICK Robert - 1901 - 20/11/1901 – Age 43 - Whitburn Rolleywayman, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died 23rd August, 1902. The return wheel of an endless rope haulage is fixed under the kip near the shaft. While the haulage was standing deceased was oiling the wheel and was caught by it when it started. He did not give any directions for the haulage to stand while he was so engaged.

SEDGWICK William - 1903 - 31/12/1903 – Age 27 - Gatawen Collier, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was chipping the roof down in a roadway which was propped each side when more came than he expected and a stone fell from a slip upon him.

SEERS Ernest - 1908 - 19/02/1908 – Age 19 - New Tredegar Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. On his way out to the pit, after finishing his shift, he was run over by a full journey on the engine plane. There appears to have been great want of discipline and order with regard to the men going up the incline at the end of the shift, the deceased having been passed by a number of men in their wild rush without being seen.
