The gas fired at their candles which they were using instead of safety lamps in approaching a place likely to contain firedamp. 3 killed.

ARNOTT Andrew - 1876 - 30/09/1876 – Age 36. William Pit, Fife. Steam boiler burst.

ARNSBY John - 1876 - 17/02/1876 – Age 30 – Sinker. Ellistown, JJ Ellis, Bagworth, Leicester. Engineman drew Cole over the pulley and he fell to the bottom of the pit fatally injuring Arnsby who was at work for two shifts and was asleep. Tried at Leicester Assizes and sentenced to 10 days imprisonment. 2 killed.

ASHMAN George - 1872 - 03/12/1872 – Age 13 – Driver. Clandown, Charles Hollwey, Clandown, Somerset. One of the traces of a horse working underground got hitched to a rope the boy had round his waist. The horse ran away and he was dragged about 200yds and was killed.

ASHMAN James - 1872 - 21/02/1872 – Age 21 - Collier. Huish, Writhlington Co., Somerset. After getting into the cage he put his head out too far and when the engine started he was caught between the flat sheets and the top ring of the cage whereby his head was cut in two. A verdict of manslaughter was given against the banksman who it was proved had committed a breach of the rules. He was allowed bail, £100 himself, two sureties of £50 each and sent for trial at the next Somerset Assizes.

ASKEW Stephen - 1875 - 11/01/1875 – Age 33 - Miner. Park Furness (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Furness, Lancashire. Falling down a rise in which he was working. He had fired a hole and was preparing to descend into a place of safety when it is supposed his candle went out and that he having git confused made a false step in trying to find the ladder.

ASPIN John - 1872 - 15/10/1872 – Age 29 – Coalminer. Broadfield, Thomas Simpson and Co., Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire. Roof falling as he and the underlooker were preparing to prop an old working. An inquest was held at the Sough Inn before Mr. Hargreaves coroner on the body of John Aspin, aged 24 years, who met with his death under the following circumstances. The deceased was employed by Messrs Thomas Simpson and Co. at the colliery on Broadfield Moor. On Tuesday the underlooker, James Yates was pointing out certain work which would have to be done on the morrow, near some pillars. Without any warning whatsoever, a huge stone fell bringing down a portion of rough stuff with it and burying Aspin beneath it. Yates escaped with slight injuries only, being slightly grazed. The jury recorded a verdict of "accidental death". The deceased leaves a wife and three or four little children. (Accrington Times).

ASPINALL John (injured) - 1879 - 07/10/1879 – Age 17 – Waggoner. Priestners, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Westleigh Lancashire. Head hurt by a large gig wheel rolling over as it was being removed by three men. No.2 Pit.

ASPINALL Peter - 1879 - 22/10/1879 – Age 32 - Collier. Alexandra, St. Helens Colliery Co Ltd., St. Helens, Lancashire. The engineman started the engine the wrong way and the cage was taken up into the pulley when the rope broke and the cage with the men fell to the pit bottom. 7 killed.

AUSTIN Charles - 1878 - 01/07/1878 – Age 15 – Ponydriver. Garswood Park, David Bromilow and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Cassidy and another man were clearing away a fall which had just occurred in the level while Austin held a light for them. A large stone which they were turning over slipped out of their hands and fell against a prop knocking it out which caused more of the roof to fall upon them. 2 killed.

AYACK or QUINN James - 1876 - 26/09/1876 – Age 23 - Collier. Wheatley Hill Original, Hartlepool Collieries Co. Ltd., Thornley, Durham. Killed by an explosion of gas in barrier way in main coal seam. Quinn holed his bord into an old drift which was full of gas and on the rise side of a 33 feet fault. Naked lights were being used at the time. 4 killed.

AYSON William - 1875 - 17/12/1875 – Age 46 - Labourer. Clifton, Saul Isaac MP, Nottingham. Ripping the roof when part of the bind fell on him.

AYTON John - 1878 - 06/08/1878 – Age 27 - Miner. Rowantree A (ironstone), Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., St. John’s Chapel, Durham. Fall of stone from roof. It came off a slip.
