Skegby Colliery

At Skegby the Dunsil was worked until January 1883 by the Old Skegby Colliery Co, Surveyor, William Dodsley.

Toll Bar

A toll bar was situated nearby on the road from Wirksworth to Whatstandwell.

Strikes

On 30th April 1883 there was a strike at Grassmoor over the company deciding to lessen the hours worked by ½ hour each day and by 1¾ hours on Saturdays. The strike collapsed after 2 weeks and some of the ringleaders were sacked. There was a strike lasting 4 months over reductions at Mapperley (Glendon Iron Co). At Cotes Park there was a dispute over the use of safety lamps and the poor light given off. The men were demanding an increase of 4d (1⅔p) a ton, to pay for half the lamp and the affected eyesight. They would rather use candles. Tibshelf, Birchwood and Cinder Hill (Chas Seely & Co) men came out. In South Derbyshire the men at Church Gresley (Lord Donington), Netherseal, Granville
Bretby Nos 1, 2 and 3 and Newhall Park No3 (Lady Chesterfield) and Cadley Hill and Swadlincote 1,2 and 3
(Hall’s pits) were on strike also.

Changed Hands

Hucknall Torkard colliery changed hands from the Hucknall Colliery Co to Ellis and Co
Silkstone colliery, Belper, from WG Cursham to Cursham and Co, but then went into liquidation.

Colliery For Auction

On 19 May 1883 Brimington Common Colliery for auction and all plant, workshops etc, engine house with Cornish boiler 16 feet (4.88m) x 6 feet (1.83m) dia, winding engine 10” (0.25m) cylinder, 20” (0.50m) stroke with link motion, 2 pulleys 8 feet (2.44m) dia, headgear 24 feet (7.31m) pitchpine new, 2 pit cages, 10 trams, carts, weighing machine, Carpenters and blacksmiths shops. Recently erected engine house with blue slate roof 17 feet (5.18m) x 21 ½ feet (6.55m), offices 17 (5.18m) x 12 feet (3.65m) x 8 feet (2.44m) high. Workshops, 34 feet (10.36m) x 13 ½ feet (4.11m). Situated on Manor Road.

Shoddy Abandoned

Newhall Field (Shoddy) or Oldfield colliery was abandoned by Church and Maples, Manager George S Bragge but was re-opened again by a new Co Swadlincote or Cartwright Colliery Co with Edmund Dooley as Manager. However he would be replaced by TJ Wykes in 1886.

Manager’s and Agent’s names for the mines were first published in the Mines Inspector’s report of 1883.
