Water From Summit Running Into Newstead

Water from the closed Kirkby Summit colliery (1968) was now entering the High Main north side workings at Newstead.

Titan Road Header

A large Titan E134 road-heading machine was installed in the third drift at Ollerton, dipping at 1in4.   A smaller Titan E169 machine was installed in a scour later. Both were to prove good machines.

Cotgrave

The Blackshale seam was accessed at Cotgrave (South Nottinghamshire) and at Sherwood (North Nottinghamshire) and Shirebrook (North Derbyshire).

Single Entry Mining Pioneered At Pye Hill

Single entry using a modified Dosco in-seam miner in 5 feet (1.5m) high and a face 16½ yards (15m) long with 11 powered supports and a 3 man team was pioneered at Pye Hill (South Nottinghamshire).  K49s panel retreated 200m in 59 shifts producing 5,400 tonnes at an OMS of +30 tonnes.

Mansfield Single Entry Faces

The thick combined Deep Hard/Piper seam was developed at Mansfield (North Nottinghamshire).  43¾ yards (40m) single entry faces at 7’ 6” (2.3m) high and a run of 655 yards (600m) were started: 202s, 204s and 206s.  However the successful extraction rates proved too great and the development of the gates could not keep up.

Retreat Face At Sherwood

In the first 6 months 133s panel at Sherwood (North Nottinghamshire) with a face line of 55m retreated 840m with a weekly best output of 12,500 tonnes. I visited this panel with the Ollerton Undermanager Alan V Goodwin (8140) to observe the operations and support systems in readiness for the introduction of a retreat face at Ollerton in the near future. We met the Undermanager Brian C Wright (9913) on the panel who fully explained the system. He would become Group Director eventually.

Thoresby

The High Hazles seam at Thoresby (North Nottinghamshire) was abandoned as production was concentrated in the thick Parkgate seam and the last of the Top Hard reserves.

Babbington Heavily Picketed

Month two of the strike and more than 2,000 pickets swarmed in from the M1 Motorway and surrounded the pit gates at Babbington, (South Nottinghamshire) however the men going to work were allowed in

Parliament

An emergency debate was held in the House of Commons, but the Government made it clear that it would not interfere with the running of the Coal Board by Ian McGregor.

Leon Brittan the Home Secretary (Con) said that the Government was prepared to pay 90% of the costs incurred by the local authorities in policing the dispute.

Arthur Scargill Visited Nottinghamshire

Arthur Scargill visited Nottinghamshire on a number of occasions to address rallies and lead marches aimed at persuading the local miners to join the strike, but to no avail. Only the few NUM members who had come out in the first place were on his side. A few of those relented and went back to work, both North  Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire because after 2 months out without pay, it was beginning to tell. Of course at the time I didn’t realise, same as a good many more, that one was paid £4 a day to stand on an Official Picket Line!

Arthur Scargill attended the Mansfield May Day Rally which ended with 57 arrests for rioting.

Ian McGregor Made His First Visit To Nottinghamshire

Ian McGregor NCB Chairman made his first visit to Nottinghamshire since the dispute started.  He had a ‘thank you’ message for the workers and an ‘uncompromising message’ for the strikers – there would be no talks until the NUM came up with some constructive suggestions.

NUM Parade in Mansfield

20,000 or more paraded the streets of Mansfield led by Arthur Scargill and Tony Benn MP. The dispute had been going on for 11 weeks before Arthur Scargill and Ian McGregor met for the first time round the negotiating table, but the talks broke up after one hour. Three miners asked the High Court to declare illegal the Nottinghamshire Area decision to make the strike official.

NCB And NUM Talks Break Down

On 24th May the first meeting in London between the NCB and NUM, There was an offer to extend the deadline for further pit closures. The talks broke down after one hour.

Specifications For Faces

In the North Nottinghamshire Area for the period May 1984 the specifications for all faces for each Colliery in the Area is shown: Panzer chain size mainly 22mm, some 19mm, and 18mm at Creswell.  90% of stage loader chains were 19mm. This gives some idea of the amount of equipment on or at a coal face.

Huge Cost Of Subsidence

Due to the ever-increasing subsidence problem the NCB approached the Government for an extra £128m to settle claims in the Mansfield area. This highlighted a major increasing problem and planning was intensified to keep away from built up areas or other problem areas where possible.  However this led to several planned panels being cancelled, eventually leading to the lives of several collieries being shortened.
