Memorial to Sneyd Colliery Explosion Jan 1st 1942

Fifty Seven men lost their lives on New Years day in 1942 when a giant explosion ripped through the pit.
In normal times these 57 men would not have been at work on New Years day, but coal was urgently needed for the war effort. We all accept that the armed forces are vital to the nations defence, but just as vital were the army of miners.
