GRIFFITH John - 1904 - 10/02/1904 – Age 28 - Phoenix Collier, Phoenix Coal and Cannel Co., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A sudden weighting of the roof occurred over the longwall face and a large stone gave way from the roof capping four props and fatally injuring deceased.

GRIFFITH John - 1905 - 10/03/1905 - Cambrian No.1 Shoer, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

GRIFFITH Owen - 1902 - 11/11/1902 – Age 23 - Deep Navigation Repairer, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Object falling down the shaft. 5 killed.

GRIFFITH Richard W. - 1906 - 26/10/1906 – Age 17 - Westminster No.4 Labourer, Westminster Brymbo Coal and Coke Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged clearing a small fall of dirt in a roadway, when some more roof gave way upon him. The roadway was propped on each side, but not barred.

GRIFFITH Robert - 1901 - 04/07/1901 – Age 46 - Croesor Slate, Slate getter, Park and Croesor Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Fall of a block of slate from a place well within his reach. Killed instantaneously. He and his mate had examined the place shortly before the accident and had considered it to be perfectly safe.

GRIFFITH T.W. - 1903 - 15/09/1903 – Age 35 - Dorothea, Slate Quarry Slate getter, Dorothea Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. A large overhanging piece of rook fell upon them. Thomas was killed on the spot and Griffith died on the 18th. 2 killed.

GRIFFITH Thomas - 1900 - 01/06/1900 – Age 14 - Havod Collier boy, Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face top coal, 4 feet x 3 feet x 21 inches thick, from between two slants. Four feet seam.

GRIFFITH William - 1903 - 19/06/1903 – Age 37 - Glynrhonwy, Slate Quarry Labourer, Glynrhonwy Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. While descending, by means of a suspending rope to an overhanging face, he to support himself by a rope and fell to a depth of about 30 yards.

GRIFFITH William - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 46 - Lady Lewis Collier, Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased, an experienced collier, was cutting coal in the Nine feet seam, when a piece of cliff, 7.5 feet by 3 feet by 21 feet thick, fell from between two slips on to him, and injured him so severely that he died in 4 days. He is said to have examined the reef by sounding half an hour before the accident. A prop, which had been set at the edge of the stone might have kept it up if it had a lid on.

GRIFFITHS Alfred - 1901 - 18/01/1901 – Age 15 - Black Park Pony driver, Black Park Colliery Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He appears to have gone too far before putting scotches in the tubs to go down a run in level and probably fell under the tubs when attempting to jump off the first full tub and was fatally crushed.

GRIFFITHS Alfred - 1903 - 21/03/1903 – Age 46 - Aldridge Stallman, Aldridge Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof (stone) at working face in deep seam. He was getting a rate of coal off the face, near a small fault, when the roof fell between the fault and a slip which was not visible. There should have been a post under the stone which fell to comply with the timbering regulations.

GRIFFITHS Bertie Llewellwyn - 1901 - 26/09/1901 – Age 21 - Cambrian No.2 Doorboy, Cambrian Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by eight runaway trams owing to the breaking of the haulage rope.

GRIFFITHS Daniel - 1909 - 19/08/1909 – Age 25 - Pengram Collier, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Run over by a full journey, which he was taking out, owing to his slipping and falling in front of it. He was on his way to the pit at the time with the under manager. The road was of good size and in good order. A pure accident.

GRIFFITHS David - 1904 - 01/04/1904 – Age 33 - Dowlais Cardiff Shoeing smith, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased who had just descended, walked from the shaft about 180 yards right into a journey of full trams which ran over him. The roadway was 14.5 feet wide and was well provided with manholes.

GRIFFITHS David J. - 1905 - 13/07/1905 – Age 19 - East Elliot Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When, with his comrade, taking a tram with two 9 feet timbers in it from a heading, where it was placed to allow of a full tram passing it, his head was in some way crushed by one of the timbers against the side, but exactly how it came about was not satisfactorily explained by his comrade, the road being of very ample size.

GRIFFITHS David T. - 1909 - 19/02/1909 – Age 20 - Wynnstay Pump minder, Wynnstay Collieries Co., Denbigh. When in charge of an electric pump underground, the deceased appeared to have taken hold of the electric cable, as the covering of the connector was found to have been drawn down at that point, exposing the live wire about 1/8th of an inch. He died from the effects of electric shock. It was advised at the inquiry to have the electric pump house made larger, as the space around the electric pump was very limited.

GRIFFITHS Edward - 1900 - 25/01/1900 – Age 42 - Flint Contractor, New Flint Colliery Co. Ltd., Flint. Flint Inspection made. When his partner and himself were engaged ripping the roof of their roadway a large stone fell upon the deceased from a slip in the roof. He succumbed to the injuries received June 30th 1900.

They were thrown out of the cage while ascending the shaft in consequence of it having struck against one of the iron girders or byatts about 71 yards from the bottom. The cage, which had 8 or 9 inches clear of the girders when steady, is said to have left the bottom steadily and from some cause unknown, to have got into a swing with this result. My own impression is that the cage was jerked off the bottom, owing to the lengths of slack rope at the time, and thus got swaying about. There were four wire rope guides to each cage and subsequently the cages worked all right without any tightening of the guide ropes. There were no indications noticeable of the cage having previously come in contact with the sides of the shaft or the girders. 5 killed.

GRIFFITHS G. - 1903 - 16/07/1903 – Age 60 - Treeton Roadman, Rothervale Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. Died 29th July. He was travelling along the engine plane when three tubs became uncoupled and ran upon him and fatally injured him.

GRIFFITHS George - 1906 - 27/02/1906 – Age 42 - Ebbw Vale Waun Llwyd Haulier, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. A loaded tram of timber on the front end of which he was riding tilted up, in consequence of the timber having shifted and crushed him against the roof.

GRIFFITHS Giles - 1906 - 27/04/1906 – Age 37 - Bedlington Stoneman, Bedlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Deceased was shooting up a bottom caunch in a longwall heading in the 8th North flat of the Yard seam, 2 feet 10 inches thick, of the ‘A’ pit. The heading had only recently been started off on an old road with coal sides, in which, both top and bottom stone had been removed to make height. He was visited by the chargeman at 7.55 pm, after he had fired two shots, and as the second shot had displaced a pair of gears, set under the brow next the old road, the chargeman replaced it, and after jowling the stone left the place at 8.10 pm., as he considered it, safe. The chargeman returned at 8.35 pm. and found a blue metal stone, 6 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 17 inches thick, relieved by jacks at each end and at the back, and with a free side next the old road and a good parting above, had fallen on him from the brow displacing the pair of gears that had been reset and a prop under another pair set at right angles under one end of the stone, also breaking but not displacing the plank. Deceased was released 20 minutes after the chargeman found him but he was then dead. There was sufficient loose timber for use lying near. The Local Inspectors reported, ‘In our opinion it was a pure accident.’

GRIFFITHS Griffith - 1909 - 07/10/1909 – Age 65 - Votty & Bowydd, Slate Labourer, Votty and Bowydd Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. While uncoupling waggons in motion his head was caught between them, and he sustained a fracture of the skull. Died on the 13th.

GRIFFITHS Gwillym - 1908 - 28/01/1908 – Age 28 - Pentyffynnon Collier, Blain Colliery Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Explosion of firedamp or coal dust. 2 killed.

GRIFFITHS Hannah Jane - 1904 - 10/11/1904 – Age 16 - Waunhir Stone picker, Trimsaran Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Run over while attempting to cross the sidings between two loaded trucks during shunting operations. Female.

GRIFFITHS Henry - 1906 - 19/04/1906 – Age 16 - Lady Windsor Collier boy, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal, 4 feet by 4 feet by 22 inches thick, fell as deceased was cutting out the butt of a face slip of coal. One sprag was said to have been crushed out. Four-feet seam.

GRIFFITHS Herbert - 1906 - 12/12/1906 – Age 24 - Park Hall Electrical engineer, Park Hall Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Explosion of fire-damp.

GRIFFITHS James - 1904 - 10/02/1904 – Age 43 - Tir Pentwys Collier, Tir Pentwys Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of ground where he was engaged repairing and which the examiner had ordered him to get down. Apparently he thought he would first set the pair of timbers on which he was engaged but while making room for the arm the stone fell and crushed him. He died from general tuberculosis in November.

GRIFFITHS James - 1905 - 08/11/1905 – Age 60 - West Elliot Timberman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. A journey of 18 full trams, leaving double parting, ran back in consequence of the rope breaking, and the bar screwing some of the waggons off the rails, he was crushed against the side as he was following them.

GRIFFITHS James - 1907 - 22/02/1907 – Age 47 - Dunnikier Engineman, Walter Herd and Sons Ltd., Fife. Deceased was walking up a dook, and was overtaken by a loaded rake of tubs being drawn up, and severely injured, the injuries terminating fatally on 21st May, 1907. He apparently did not think the rake was so close upon him as he had plenty of room to step aside and allow it to pass.

GRIFFITHS John - 1900 - 11/12/1900 – Age 24-  Llanhilleath Rider, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When walking out behind a journey, some overhanging coal in the last tram caught against and knocked out a set of timbers resulting in a fall from the roof which killed him.

GRIFFITHS John - 1902 - 03/10/1902 – Age 45 - Penrikyber Haulier, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff 20 feet long by 1 to 4 feet wide by 6 inches to 3 feet thick fell and crushed out one pair of timbers and partly displaced another. It fell from a slant which ran from one side to the middle of the roadway. Six feet seam.

GRIFFITHS John - 1903 - 14/01/1903 – Age 40 - Abram Contractor, Abram Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was building a pack on the side of the brow and took it upon himself to knock a prop out with a hammer, which was supporting the roof, causing a stone to fall upon him fatally injuring him.

GRIFFITHS John - 1904 - 23/04/1904 – Age 36 - Point of Ayrshire Loader, Point of Ayrshire Colliery Co., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A tub of coal had got off the rails with the pony driver and when it had been got on the rails a fall of roof occurred capping three bars and fatally injuring deceased. The timber was probably disturbed when the tub left the rails as the adjoining timber appeared in good order.

GRIFFITHS John - 1906 - 26/02/1906 – Age 38 - Ebbw Vale, Waun Llwyd Overman, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He was carrying his drills at the end of the shift when they slipped and scratched his arm. Blood poisoning supervened, and he died on April 23rd, 1906.

GRIFFITHS John - 1908 - 08/02/1908 – Age 62 - Ynyscedwyn Repairer, South Wales Anthracite Colliery Co. Ltd., Brecon. While cutting, with an axe, a wedge to place on the top of a prop, he cut his knee. Ultimately the wound formed into an abscess and he died from blood poisoning on 19th June.

GRIFFITHS Joseph - 1902 - 21/08/1902 – Age 44 - Glyncorrwg pits Collier, Glyncorrwg Coal Co., Glamorgan. Two empty trams got free from a journey and ran down the drift, dipping 7 inches per yard, killing deceased before he had time to get out of the way.

GRIFFITHS Morgan - 1904 - 24/10/1904 – Age 24 - Dare Asst. hitcher, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck on the head by a lump of coal which fell off a tram as the cage was being placed on the fans. It struck the top of the cage which was at the bottom and glanced off to deceased who was 6 feet from the shaft and was pulling the empty tram away. The penthouse reached to within 9 inches of the cage.

GRIFFITHS Rhys - 1902 - 22/07/1902 – Age 18 - Cambrian No.2 Rider, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by a journey of eight trams. He must have slipped his foot as he attempted to get on to the rope.

GRIFFITHS Robert - 1904 - 26/02/1904 – Age 66 - Madeley Wood Foreman, Lilleshall Co., Shropshire. Died suddenly while on duty. A doctor certified syncope, and no inquest was held.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1904 - 01/12/1904 – Age 22 - Ely Haulier, Naval Colliery Co. (1897) Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased, with a horse, was taking a journey of seven trams along a comparatively level road when he fell off the gun on which he was riding, and was run over. The level was 8.5 feet high and 11.5 feet wide.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1905 - 08/08/1905 – Age 45 - Penrikyber Hitcher, Penrikyber Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This accident arose from a misunderstanding between the hitchers on the upper and lower decks of a simultaneous loading installation. The hitcher on the upper deck, thinking that he had received a signal from the lower deck that all was right signalled the carriage away as he had secured his tram. Deceased who was scotching at the time, was lifted a short distance and dropped back into the sump. The hitcher who made the mistake had been employed in some capacity for 25 years.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1905 - 15/11/1905 – Age 36 - Cambrian No.2 Collier, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. At face, cliff, 19 feet by 7 feet by 17 inches thick, fell while deceased was cutting coal. The lad working with him said there was a place just ready for a prop. In my opinion there was room for at least 3 props and there was great want of care on the part of the fireman and deceased. Red Seam.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1905 - 27/10/1905 – Age 34 - Tarnei Mason, South Wales Primrose Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While assisting other men, including the manager, to unload some wire ropes from a truck, by means of a travelling crane, the crane capsized and fell on him. Clips, to hold the crane down on the rails, had not been used in this particular instance.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1907 - 06/02/1907 – Age 15 - Garth Merthyr Collier’s boy, Elders Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face while the lad was filling coal into a box under a piece of overhanging clod. It fell upon him and killed him instantaneously. The collier should have seen that the boy worked in a safe place and the clod should have been supported by sprags or steps should have been taken to break it down. Clod which fell measured 3 feet by 10 inches by 11 inches, Five Feet seam, safety lamps.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1907 - 06/11/1907 – Age 39 - Waun Llwyd Collier, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. While removing the sticks of a pair of timbers, which he had just knocked out from under this second rippings, a stone about 21 feet square and 6 inches thick fell and caught his head causing injuries from which he died on the 28th May, 1908. Apparently he had not used a gablock and chain which he should have done and which was available for drawing the timber.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1908 - 11/03/1908 – Age 45 - Shelton Racecourse No.3 Collier, Shelton Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was preparing to set a bar under some top coal at a point where two roads met at an acute angle. He had set two temporary posts when a mass of top coal, 12 feet by 6 feet by 3 feet, suddenly fell reeling out the posts and killing him instantly.

GRIFFITHS Thomas - 1908 - 19/12/1908 – Age 46 - Coedymoeth Night fireman. Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When last seen alive, before the accident, he was riding on a shackle between the last two trams of a full journey up the engine plane, and appears to have been killed by being crushed against the roof, as he was found lying on his back across the last tram. The districts are all being worked back to the slope, in consequence of which the slope at the lower end is rather low even for the rider. It is said that riding was prohibited but the prohibition was certainly not enforced. (Mechanical haulage.)

GRIFFITHS Walter - 1902 - 03/09/1902 – Age 25 - McLaren Haulier, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp in the Yard Vein seam. Caused by working near to or in a large accumulation of gas. 16 killed.

GRIFFITHS William - 1900 - 27/09/1900 – Age 36 - Trafford Collier, Crompton and Shawcross Ltd., Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Whilst going to his work, through a double road shunt off the engine brow, three full tubs were set in motion by a collier further in interfering with a scotch which fell out accidentally. The deceased thought he could stop the three tubs but they were coming too fast and crushed him.

GRIFFITHS William - 1905 - 05/04/1905 – Age 43 - Westminster Collier, Westminster and Brymbo Coal and Coke Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were working a ribbing, alongside of an old road, when a piece of clod fell from the roof upon him, capping a prop.

GRIFFITHS William - 1906 - 15/12/1906 – Age 29 - Ynyishir Labourer, Ynyishir Steam Coal Co., Glamorgan. Deceased and another labourer were stowing rubbish in the face of a stall. The other labourer was throwing rubbish from the road to deceased who was building the gob wall so as to pin the roof when a piece of the cliff roof, 8 feet by 3 feet by 13 inches thick, fell and injured deceased so badly that he died in a few minutes. One prop, nearly underneath the centre of the stone, was crushed out. On each side of the stone was a smooth slip. Red coal seam.

GRIFFITHS William - 1909 - 13/08/1909 – Age 26 - New Ash Filler, G Watkinson and Sons, Flint. He was in the act of filling a tub of coal, at the face, after a shot had been fired, when a stone fell from the roof upon him, capping a prop.

GRIFFITHS William D. - 1905 - 25/04/1905 – Age 18 - Cambrian No.2 Waterman, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was run over and killed by an outgoing journey of 24 trams of coal. How he got run over is not known. Soon after the journey started out he was found between two trams, with his legs twisted round one of the axles. The journey was stopped but while the two riders were preparing to release him, the engineman pulled the journey on, and before a signal to stop could be given, he was drawn 9 yards. He died soon after. The engineman swore at the inquest that he had had a signal to pull out.

GRIFFITHS William E. - 1909 - 25/01/1909 – Age 15 - Blaina Lamp boy, John Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Back of both legs burned, his clothes having caught fire as a result of his throwing some colzaline oil on a fire which he and a man were lighting in a repairing shop, part of a lamp cabin on the surface at Lower Deep pit. The oil used was colzaline with 68 to 80 degrees flash point. This I believe is the second death from the use of this oil in the lamp cabins at this colliery.

GRIFFTHS David - 1904 - 26/08/1904 – Age 29 - Abercrave Collier, Abercrave Collieries Co., Brecon. Fall of roof at face while building a cog on the upper side of his stall, a fall from the clift roof occurred killing him on the spot. Fall measured 10 feet x 4 feet and 18 inches thick. Four feet seam.

GRIME William - 1904 - 09/04/1904 – Age 49 - Broad Oak Collier, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Drawing props in roadway leading to pillaring place, using short hammer, he ought to have used a gablock. Fall came away from a pronounced step (Good roof.)

GRIMES George - 1901 - 08/05/1901 – Age 37 - Coegnant Repairer, Norths Navigation Collieries (1899) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, while breaking some stones that had fallen, one 6 feet x 3 feet x 18 inches, fell from the roof upon him causing death within ten minutes. Six feet seam.

GRIMES John - 1903 - 04/05/1903 – Age 40 - Douglas Bank Asst. fireman, Rosebridge and Douglas Bank Collieries Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased appears to have gone down a distance of four feet to the sump to clear some dirt which he had mentioned about in his report at the beginning of the shift. There was nobody else down in that portion of the mine when he apparently got crushed by the descending cage. He had not signalled that he required the cage at rest although the winding was being carried on from a mouthing above.

GRIMSHAW Alfred - 1900 - 05/03/1900 – Age 26 - Pendlebury Doe Collier, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Whilst walking down a jigbrow, 10 feet wide, 6 feet high inclination 1 in 3.5, he fell and caught his head against the coal. Injuries a small punctured wound on right side of his scalp and small abrasion on top of head. Died 13th March, doctor said from inflammation of brain. The jury decided death due to injury received.

GRIMSHAW James - 1908 - 27/03/1908 – Age 50 - Bispham Hall Collier, Bispham Hall Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. When travelling up a brow rising 1 in 5 he appears to have taken hold of the armoured concentric cable to assist himself up the brow, and received a fatal electric shock. After the accident a short circuit was detected at that place, and probably may have been caused by the deceased disturbing the cable, as the electrician had found it in order previous to the accident in that shift when he examining it.

GRIMSHAW Stephen - 1906 - 18/09/1906 – Age 48 - Hoyland Silkstone Collier, Hoyland Silkstone Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Deceased and his brother had reached the bottom of the jinney when the set moved away. They sat on some air pipes, at the empty side, until the full load came down. While there they heard one of the sets running away. Deceased thought it was the empty train running back so jumped into the full road and he was immediately caught by the full tubs and run over and fatally injured. The cause of the tubs running a main was the rope getting off the pulley at the top of the jinney and the jerk thus caused straightening the hook of one of the couplings.

GRINDLEY George - 1901 - 06/08/1901 – Age 31 - Seaton Delaval, Forster Stoneman, Seaton Delaval Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was in the act of setting a prop when some coal fell from slips which were not discernible before the accident.

GRINTER George - 1902 - 27/11/1902 – Age 55 - Albion Labourer, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff, 2 feet by 18 inches by 8 inches thick, from between two props 52 inches apart. Six feet seam.

GRINTER Walter - 1908 - 12/11/1908 – Age 47 - Ham Hill, Stone Quarry Labourer, William Bishop, Somerset. A large block of stone, about 15 inches thick, standing on and fell over on him as he was passing a sling chain around another block or piece, which he had just wedged off it and which it was intended to lift on to a trolley for removal.

GROARK Thomas - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 68 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

GROCOTT Henry - 1904 - 20/02/1904 – Age 17 - Whitfield Driver, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed by tub running down jig owing to breakage of rope.

GRONOW William - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 52 - Cambrian No.1 Haulier, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

GROOM Frederick - 1903 - 07/12/1903 – Age 31 - Bentinck Stallman, New Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was working in a stall and near a fault when a piece of roof fell and fatally injured him. He died the next day.

GROOM John - 1904 - 16/03/1904 – Age 49 - Great Fenton Fireman, Stafford Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Suffocated by firedamp. He went without a light into a steep place at a fault, known to contain firedamp and fenced off.

GROOM Walter - 1909 - 10/12/1909 – Age 26 - Garforth Miner, Owners of Garforth Colliery, Yorkshire. He was working in the coal face when a large stone fell from between converging slips and killed him. More timber should have been set.

GROVE Morgan - 1907 - 12/02/1907 – Age 39 - Ynyscedwyn Repairer, South Wales Anthracite Colliery Co. Ltd., Brecon. While working as a repairer on the main haulage slant, he was run over and killed by runway trams which had been detached from the rope at the surface landing. In consequence of the shortness of room from slant brow to the engine house, a flying shunt is taken to carry the end tram over the brow, but the failure to do so on this occasion caused the tram to run down the slant. Gradient 1 in 8. No barhook used.

GROVES Charles - 1907 - 15/10/1907 – Age 34 - Monckton Main Driver, Monckton Main Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. When taking empty tubs into the face a fall of roof and side occurred on the road and killed him. It had come from three slips which could not be seen before the stone fell. Everyone appears to have thought the roof was quite sound.

GROVES James - 1900 - 24/08/1900 – Age 30 - Byers Green Hewer, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died on 8th February from injuries received on the 24th August 1900, by a fall of stone from the roof of his working place.

GROVES Orlando - 1903 - 14/01/1903 – Age 49 - National Ripper, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall on road rock, 10 feet by 7 feet by 17 inches thick. Deceased and his partner knocked out a flat as the height was not sufficient and as deceased was barring down a bed, 5 inches thick, the roof above fell on him. Two feet nine seam.

GRUBB William - 1909 - 26/06/1909 – Age 30 - Hetty Collier, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face, coal and shale 14.5 feet by 1.5 feet by 3 feet thick, which had been overhanging about 15 inches, fell on deceased as he was holing under the middle coal. It was unspragged. Two feet nine seam.

GRUNDY Edward - 1909 - 23/10/1909 – Age 55 - Crop & Deep Contractor, St. Helens Collieries Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. He was engaged widening a roadway when a portion of side fell, knocking out a prop, causing a fall of roof upon the deceased.

GRUNDY Frederick - 1907 - 25/03/1907 – Age 34 - Birchenwood No.6 Collier, Birchenwood Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased and his mate, on reaching their working place, found that two props had been reeled out during the work owing to the floor rising. Wishing to get out some back timber and to secure their safety while doing so, they proceeded to reset the props. Deceased had only struck his once when the roof fell over an area of 12 feet by 8 feet and to a height of 3 feet at it’s centre. It gave no warning and came away from a previously unseen slip. They had tapped it immediately before and it sounded all right.

GRUNDY John - 1906 - 12/11/1906 – Age 36 - Glenburn Labourer, J Griffiths and Sons,  Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Apparently the waggon lowerer failed to warn two men, that he was going to lower a waggon against the one they were filling and just at the moment they were lowering their own waggon a little, the deceased was pushing at the buffer, when the other waggon came behind him and crushed him. He expired the following day.

GRUNDYS Joseph - 1900 - 12/11/1900 – Age 48 - Barlborough Stallman, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased and two other men were proceeding to their work when a fall of roof occurred as they were passing along a roadway. The deceased was struck and fatally injured. He died on 11th December.

GRUNOW Albert - 1905 - 24/05/1905 – Age 38 - Llanhilleth Haulier, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When driving his horse up a heading a fall of roof occurred at the entrance to a stall. The supporting timbers were knocked out by the fall, apparently not having been efficiently set.

GUCHION Michael Thomas - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 20 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

GUEST Edward - 1906 - 24/05/1906 – Age 30 - Saltwells No. 37 Loader, Earl of Dudley, Staffordshire. Fall of top coal. 4 killed.

GUEST Fred. - 1905 - 16/02/1905 – Age 14 - North Staveley Asst. ropeman, Aston Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was reaching to get his breakfast, which he had placed at the bottom of an upright, and in doing so his hand was caught between an empty tub and the upright and fatally injured him. The place has been in same position for many years, but the upright since this accident occurred has been removed.

GUEST Isaac - 1906 - 07/10/1906 – Age 54 - Sandwell Park Pikeman, Sandwell Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Struck and run over by empty tubs when hooking on at foot of jig. Leg broken and ribs fractured. Died 11th March, 1907.

GUEST John - 1908 - 04/03/1908 – Age 27 - Hamstead Deputy, Hamstead Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Underground fire. 25 killed.

GUEST Joseph - 1900 - 31/03/1900 – Age 56 Sandwell Park Stallman, Sandwell Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of coal in thick coal opening from a height of 17 feet. Died 2nd Apr.

GUFFOG Hiram - 1903 - 12/09/1903 – Age 48 - Great Lever Collier, Earl of Bradford, Lancashire. Fall of roof at face of working place from between two slips. The timbering distance 3 feet 6 inches exceeded 4 feet 4 inches space. One prop would probably have saved a life. (Good roof.)

GUIHEEN John - 1903 - 29/04/1903 – Age 31 - Aughabehy Collier, Arigna, Ireland. Fall of roof at face of working place from a slippery back.

GUINNEY Robert - 1901 - 25/02/1901 – Age 67 - Limerigg Pit bottomer, John Nimmo and Son Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was engaged at a midworking and when about to put a loaded tub on the cage it moved up and he and the tub were precipitated to the bottom, a distance of 44 fathoms. When the cage was in its position, at the midworking, the engineman neglected to pin down his brake and the weight of the opposite cage, with an empty tub and rope caused it to descend at the same time causing the cage at midworking to ascend thus leaving the shaft unprotected.

GULLAND John - 1909 - 26/04/1909 – Age 48 - Benarty Hanger on, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Shortly after the rake had started to run on an inclined roadway a 'false’ link in the chain gave out and tubs ran back crushing deceased who failed to get clear.

GULLIFORD Frank - 1901 - 26/07/1901 – Age 17 - Farrington Carting boy, Farrington Collieries Co. Ltd., Somerset. He was pulling instead of pushing a tram down an incline and fell. His head was fatally crushed by the tram.

GULLIFORD Thomas - 1900 - 12/06/1900 – Age 32 - Tillery Waggon trimmer, Powell Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When trimming a waggon beneath the screens he was knocked off and run over by empty trucks which ran wild from the main line.

GULLIVER Robert - 1906 - 12/04/1906 – Age 37 - Croxdale Stoneman, Weardale Steel Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was caught by a boring bar and turned round and round once.

GUNDY Thomas - 1904 - 18/02/1904 – Age 23 - Ravenhead Daywageman, St. Helens Collieries Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged ripping roof down in a roadway and had advanced about six feet from the last bar to a slip when the roof gave way capping two bars and three stretchers, and killing them. At the inquiry it was suggested there should be better supervision of the men in this work. 2 killed.

GUNN Thomas - 1900 - 12/06/1900 – Age 56 - Glebe, Iron Ore Miner, S and J Lindow, Cumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was erecting a stage for the purpose of boring a hole to bring down some bad ground when the latter fell and caught him. He had previously tried to bring it down with a bar.

GUNN William - 1907 - 26/01/1907 – Age 54 - Pinxton No.1 Stallman, Pinxton Coal Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was making preparations for renewing some roof supports in the roadway when the roof fell and killed him.

GUNSTON Herbert - 1902 - 28/11/1902 – Age 24 - Vobster, Limestone Quarry Labourer, Westbury Iron Co. Ltd., Somerset. When lowering a truck in the sidings, in readiness for filling, six others which were standing on the same line moved forward as well, the second truck of the six caught him against the retaining wall and crushed him, he fell across the rail and the trucks following ran over him.

GUNSTONE Benjamin - 1908 - 11/03/1908 – Age 35 - Main Shipping Warf Haulier, Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. The accident happened at the sidings at the Shipping Wharf on the Neath River. While detaching a horse from an empty waggon, he fell across the railway, and the waggon wheels passed over both legs. He died next day at Swansea Hospital.

GUNTER Thomas - 1907 - 21/02/1907 – Age 51 - Rhymney Merthyr No.2 Collier, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. The deceased were clearing a large fall on a double parting, when three pairs of timber at one end of the fall were crushed out, and deceased, and two other men, were buried by the rubbish which had rested on the collars. Ras Las seam. 2 killed.

GURRY Owen - 1908 - 21/12/1908 – Age 15 - Moss Hall Pony driver, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased attempted to unhook his pony chains from the full tubs when the tubs were moving, and got crushed fatally against some stationary tubs.

GUSTEARD William - 1908 - 02/10/1908 – Age 36 - Newburgh Hewer, Broomhill Collieries Ltd., Northumberland. Fall of roof stone at working face.

GUTHRIE Andrew - 1901 - 27/09/1901 – Age 55 - North Motherwell Miner, Merry and Cuninghame, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face of working place in the Main Coal stooping section. Due to want of props which were about 7 feet back from the face.

GUTHRIE Edward - 1905 - 20/07/1905 – Age 60 - Billy Mill, Sandstone Quarry Stone mason, William Hutchinson, Northumberland. While deceased was dressing stone in a shed at the Quarry, he commenced to vomit blood, he moved away to the joiner’s bench, where he was found by another workmen and died immediately. An inquest was held and a verdict returned that death was due to haemorrhage of the lungs.

GUTHRIE Peter - 1908 - 02/03/1908 – Age 57 - North Motherwell Labourer, Merry and Cunninghame, Lanarkshire. Deceased’s duties were to run loaded tubs of smudge from the haulage to the fire doors and empty same, after emptying a tub it came back on his leg causing abrasion of the skin. The same thing occurred in three days later and blood poisoning supervened, causing death six days after the latter injury.

GUVIN John - 1903 - 20/08/1903 – Age 53 - Chidswell Dataller, Crawshaw and Warburton Ltd., Yorkshire. Fall of roof in airway which he was repairing. Cause a slip.

GUY George W. - 1901 - 15/06/1901 – Age 13 - Throckley Driver, Throckley Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was driving four full tubs out to the top of a staple pit and through the neglect of another boy, in not closing the chock, he was carried by the tubs down the staple. There was a bar across the staple top seven inches above the top of the tubs.

GUY James E. - 1901 - 12/04/1901 – Age 28 - Priors Lee, Woodhouse No.1 Stallman, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Fall of roof at working face in Top Coal. The roof was broken through the working of the Double Coal below and the fall was due to breaks at caused and natural slips. The fireman, Guy's father, was at the place about a quarter of an hour before the accident and examined the roof and told deceased to set another tree as soon as he could but he had not set it when the fall occurred.

GUY John * - 1905 – Throckley, Throckley Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland.

GUY John - 1905 - 17/07/1905 – Age 24 - New London Dataller, Digby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was standing near the pit bottom waiting to ascend after the day’s work, when he suddenly fell and died. A post-mortem examination was made and the coroner’s jury found that he died of heart disease.

GUYLER William Henry - 1906 - 31/10/1906 – Age 57 - New London Undermanager, Digby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was descending a staple pit, 14 yards deep, by means of a chain ladder, and when near the bottom he fell and fractured his skull. Deceased had suffered from heart disease for some time.

GWATKIN Hubert - 1902 - 04/09/1902 – Age 30 - Navigation Collier, Parkend deep Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Gloucestershire. Irruption of water from old workings in consequence of inaccurate plans, the manager, who also acted as surveyor, having neglected to check the surface with the underground workings. 4 killed.

GWILLIAMS Thomas – 1902 – 21/08/1902 – Age 28 – Hamstead Driver, Hamstead Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed between tub (drawn by horse) and post at side of road. No one saw how the accident occurred.
