HARPER Robert - 1907 - 10/07/1907 – Age 44 - Oakbank oil shale Miner, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was passing out from the face in order to go to his can for a charge to fire a shot when the top shale above him suddenly fell on him.

HARPER William - 1903 - 04/06/1903 – Age 31 - Low Beechburn Banksman, Low Beechburn Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. When detaching the hauling rope from a set of full tubs when he had come out of a drift he fell over and was killed.

HARPER William - 1904 - 06/09/1904 – Age 60 - Dalmeny Oil Shale Miner, Dalmeny Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was assisting to repair a roadway and while raising an iron girder to the roof it slipped and one end fell on him causing injuries to which he succumbed on 2nd April, 1905.

HARPER William - 1907 - 12/10/1907 – Age 26 - Polton Contractor, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was clearing away debris, when the coal suddenly burst over the sprags, and falling on him killed him instantly.

HARPER William - 1908 - 22/09/1908 – Age 43 - Hamstead Pikeman, Hamstead Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof.

HARPMAN Alfred - 1904 - 11/11/1904 – Age 57 - Linby Loader, Linby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Deceased was riding in an underground train, after completing the day's work, when he expired from "heart disease’. An inquest was held.

HARPUR John - 1904 - 30/11/1904 – Age 51 - Llanbradach Labourer, Cardiff Steam Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased, while carrying a sheet of iron on his shoulders across a road on which four wagons filled with small-coal were being shunted, was knocked down and one wheel passed over his legs. The sheet of iron evidently prevented him from seeing the approaching wagons. He was removed to the Cardiff Infirmary where it was found necessary to amputate one of his legs. He never rallied, but died in a few hours.

HARRERTY Alexander – 1900 – 12/09/1900 – Age 28 – Dalquharran, Drummochreen Drawer, John Campbell Kennedy, Ayrshire. Fall of roof in working place.

HARRHY Ivor – 1908 – 14/10/1908 – Age 23 – Bargoed Electrician, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He had the controller (tram car type) of a 50 hp 3-phase induction motor, for an under-ground haulage engine, out of its box or case, and was examining it for the third time for a defect when, having omitted to disconnect the current, by knocking out the switch at the panel, he touched the terminal and received a 3,000-volt current, although standing on a solid rubber mat. Apparently he must have been touching the box or case at the same time, and thus destroyed his insulation.

HARRIES Evan – 1909 – 01/11/1909 – Age 20 – Tareni Collier, South Wales Primrose Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Irruption of water. 5 killed.

HARRIES Henry – 1903 – 22/07/1903 – Age 27 – Hendreforgan Collier, Gwaun-cae-gurwen Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face, while fixing a pair of timbers a stone from the roof fell and struck him on the head causing a fatal injury. Big vein.

HARRIES Samuel – 1908 – 26/09/1908 – Age 45 – Gelli Steam Collier, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, hard fireclay, 4.5 feet by 3 feet by 10 inches thick, fell from between four slants, as deceased was cutting away a side, which prevented him from putting a collar on arms already stood. If the roof had been carefully sounded, I have little doubt but that it would have been found to be giving. Two-feet-nine seam.

HARRIES Stanley – 1908 – 18/06/1908 – Age 13 – Marine Door boy, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. A timber drawer was letting a tram of rubbish down a steep place, on a main haulage road, when it overpowered him and ran wild through his not having obtained assistance in the usual manner. It bumped into a full tram of coal which stood on the road causing it to run wild and against the door deceased was in charge of. The door was smashed and the boy’s skull fractured. The timber drawer was entirely and seriously to blame. (Mechanical haulage.)

HARRIES Thomas – 1901 – 07/09/1901 – Age 67 – Western Labourer, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While walking in to his work the empty journey overtook him and he was run over about 50 yards outbye of the double parting.

HARRIS B. – 1901 – 07/05/1901 – Age 15 – Hartshead Hurrier, Low Moor Co., Yorkshire. His head was crushed between the tub and the roof.

HARRIS Charles Fredrick – 1903 – 02/03/1903 – Age 46 – Dale Abbey Stallman, Stanton Iron Works, Derbyshire. Fall of coal. Deceased was holing, at a corner of the coalface, when the coal fell off from a slip running through the coal and which was known to exist in the roof. The sprags set under the coalface were pushed out.

HARRIS David - 1903 - 24/07/1903 – Age 13 - Universal Door boy, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased failed to open a door on an engine plane in time, with the result that the door was smashed and he was crushed against the side by the trams which had got derailed.

HARRIS David - 1905 - 19/01/1905 – Age 21 - Duffryn Dare Collier, Llwyndcoed Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. At face cliff, a stone, 12 feet by 4.5 feet by 13 inches thick, fell as deceased was working away the top part of a slip of coal. The stone was semicircular and was one-half of a ‘bell’ or ‘pan.’ One prop was crushed out. He died in four days from laceration of the brain, and fracture of the skull. Two feet nine Seam.

HARRIS David - 1906 - 25/08/1906 – Age 29 - Graig Merthyr Collier, Graigola Merthyr Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; while filling his tram, a stone measuring 6 feet 3 inches by 1 foot 6 inches by 2 feet 5 inches in thickness fell, killing him instantaneously. Graigola seam.

HARRIS David W. - 1902 - 22/05/1902 – Age 29 - Mynydd Newydd Collier, Vivian and Sons, Glamorgan. Fall of side at face while taking down coal, in falling it knocked out a prop and deceased was struck on his chest. Six feet seam.

HARRIS Evan - 1904 - 09/09/1904 – Age 20 - International Haulier, International Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by tram while coming round a bend. Died 10th Oct.

HARRIS Evan - 1907 - 10/11/1907 – Age 39 - Seven Sisters Overman, Evans and Bevan, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp or coal dust. 5 killed.

HARRIS Frank - 1906 - 09/10/1906 – Age 19 - Cwmneol Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face, clod (shale), 5 feet by 10 inches by 12 inches thick, fell as deceased was kneeling down and crushed his head. It was unsupported. He died in two days. Bute seam.

HARRIS Frederick - 1906 - 02/03/1906 – Age 57 - Chilton Hewer, H Stobart and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He died about nine hours after coming out of the pit. He complained of having strained himself whilst hewing. Death resulted from rupture of the aorta.

HARRIS Frederick William - 1908 - 01/05/1908 – Age 26 - Mow Cop Collier, J and A Mould, Staffordshire. Deceased was holing at a spurn, left at the top end of a drift in the Winpenny Seam, where the measures are inclined at about 1 in 1.5 when a fall of roof about 3 feet square and 9 inches thick occurred just behind him, reeling out a prop set about 4 feet away from the coal. Part of the fall struck him and caused injuries from which he died on the following day. The roof was wet and near by there was a fault which seemed to have produced unusual slips and partings in the strata from one of which the fall occurred.

HARRIS George - 1903 - 01/07/1903 – Age 39 - Tinsley Park Collier, Tinsley Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Whilst he was holing the coal suddenly burst over the sprags and killed him. Cause a weight.

HARRIS Henry - 1901 - 22/03/1901 – Age 30 - Arril Griffin Collier, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of top coal in his working place, fell between cogs and the face knocking out 3 posts which were under it.

HARRIS Henry - 1906 - 28/12/1906 – Age 45 - Kingswood Incline rider, Bedminster Eston Kingswood and Parkfield Collieries Ltd., Gloucester. Fall of roof. A stone, which fell higher up in the incline, which is steep, rolled down and struck him when acting as a temporary rider. It is one of those cases where great doubt exists as to whether death was the result of the accident or not.

HARRIS John - 1902 - 02/08/1902 – Age 67 - Abergorky Fireman, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was standing on a parting on the left of the main dip to allow a journey to pass down. In going over the pointers it got off the road and struck him. He ought to have gone further in along the parting. Died the following day.

HARRIS John - 1902 - 3/12/1902 – Age 17 - Spring Hill Driver, Essington Farm Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Found dead under first of two tubs drawn by horse. No one sew how the accident occurred. He may have been lifting the tub on to the nails without having unhooked the horse.

HARRIS John - 1902 - 10/10/1902 – Age 28 - New Cwmmawr Fireman, Lloyd and Treharne, Carmarthen. Fall of roof at face while testing the clift roof with a mandrill, after a shot had been fired a stone 6 feet x 3 feet x 5 inches thick fell upon him. Pumpquart vein.

HARRIS John - 1902 - 22/12/1902 – Age 52 - Bwllfa No.2 Labourer, Bwllfa & Merthyr Dare Steam Collieries (1891) Ltd., Glamorgan. Knocked down by a horse and two trams of rubbish as he was walking along a level road in the dark. Said to have been hard of hearing. Road and manholes in order.

HARRIS John - 1903 - 29/08/1903 – Age 68 - Tillery Labourer, Powells Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He slipped on a wet rail when walking out and injured himself internally but for the Workmen's Compensation Act this case would probably not have been reported as a colliery accident.

HARRIS John - 1908 - 10/03/1908 – Age 26 - New Llanerch Collier, New Llanerch Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; a fall of roof fireclay, measuring 3 feet 6 inches by 2 feet 3 inches by 1 foot 4 inches in thickness, came suddenly upon him while he was in a stooping position, holing in the coal seam. The end of the rippings was not supported as it should have been, with the knowledge that the roof consisted of heavy fireclay containing water. Razey Seam. Naked lights.

HARRIS John - 1908 - 28/04/1908 – Age 22 - Hetty Haulier, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 9.5 feet by 12 feet by 20 inches thick. As deceased was spragging the wheels of two trams, which were being drawn by a horse round a turn, the front tram got off the rails, and knocked out two pairs of timber which the roof they had been supporting, fell on and killed deceased. There was nothing to be seen to account for the derailing of the tram.

HARRIS Joseph - 1908 - 26/09/1908 – Age 53 - Cwmbargoed Repairer, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was about to lay the parting of a new stall turning off a heading in the Top Coal Seam. He went down the heading a few yards from the parting, and was in the act of cutting some wooden wedges, when a piece of cliff, 5 feet by 5.5 feet by 13 inches thick, fell from between three slants, and the end of the heading rippings, discharging one road post. A shot, fired in the rippings the previous evening, had probably loosened the stone.

HARRIS Oliver - 1907 - 12/08/1907 – Age 15 - Wyndham Collier boy, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face. While the boy was said to be making a hole in the floor, to receive a prop which his partner was dressing back on the roadway, a fall of the shale roof occurred, and killed him. The fireman had warned the collier on his last visit to set a prop at the place, but the collier had neglected to carry out his instructions. The manager intended to prosecute the collier had he not absconded. Seven feet seem. Safety lamps.

HARRIS or HARRISON Alfred George - 1906 - 14/10/1906 – Age 51 - Wingate Miner, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery Ltd., Co.Durham. Explosion of coal dust result of shot firing. 25 killed.

HARRIS Samuel - 1902 - 23/05/1902 – Age 27 - Sandwell Park Loader, Sandwell Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of coal from side of rib at working face in thick coal. A sprag had been set to support the coal which fell but this was knocked out by a bump which also brought the coal down.

HARRIS Stephen - 1907 - 27/05/1907 – Age 47 - Mountain Ripper, Mountain Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Electrocuted in consequence of a leakage of electricity due to a fault in the switch box of a small haulage plant. The current was insufficiently earthed, and it ran along a hauling rope suspended on sheaves fixed at the side of a roadway, and back again along the rope lying along the floor of a very wet heading. The deceased had gone to the assistance of a fireman who was the first to receive a shock, and immediately he gripped the rope he fell back dead. Four other men were more or less affected by shock.

HARRIS Thomas - 1908 - 01/07/1908 – Age 35 - Great Western No.2 Repairer, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was watching a collier ripping the roof of his stall road, near the face, when a piece of cliff, 7 feet by 3 feet by 7 inches thick, fell on him from an overlying bed and caused injuries from which he died on May 1st, 1909. Nine feet seam.

HARRIS Thomas - 1909 - 03/03/1909 – Age 47 - Cilely Collier, Atlantic Merthyr Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased and his partner were lowering a tram containing four pieces of timber into their stall which dips 9 inches per yard. They spragged the four wheels, the partner held back behind the tram, while deceased was checking it in front, when it overpowered them and crushed him against the face. On such a gradient the method employed was very risky and a rope or chain should have been used.

HARRIS William - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 33 - Cambrian No.1 Fireman, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

HARRIS William - 1909 - 22/03/1909 – Age 25 - West Riding Dataller, Pope and Person Ltd., Yorkshire. He ruptured himself when he lifted a tub. An operation was performed and the wound healed but he died on 8th August. He was very delicate. The medical evidence was to the effect that he died from consumption and that the death was accelerated by the accident and subsequent operation. A verdict of accidental death was returned.

HARRIS William Edward - 1902 - 21/08/1902 – Age 42 - Cwmnantllwyd Collier, South Wales Primrose Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face clift, 14 feet long 2.5 feet wide 1.5 feet thick, from between two rows of props pillar working. Craigola seam.

HARRIS William Edward - 1909 - 05/01/1909 – Age 41 - Shirebrook Stallman, Shirebrook Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased was clearing up a small quantity of which had fallen in the stall, when another fall occurred and fatally injured him. Died 6th January.

HARRIS William - George - 1909 - 26/04/1909 – Age 27 - Risca Haulier, United National Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in a heading; after taking two trams down he left them and his horse on the level and returned up the heading. His object in going back is unknown, but an idea exists that he was dissatisfied with the road, which was about to be abandoned and that he went to disturb some timbers in order to hasten its abandonment.

HARRIS William John - 1906 - 05/12/1906 – Age 15 - Tir Pentwys Collier boy, Tir Pentwys Black Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof on the road, about 12 yards back from the face of the heading and opposite the entrance to a stall road. The full tram was being pushed out by the collier, as the road was crushed and too low for the horse. At this point a very heavy fall occurred directly over the tram and caught the boy who was standing at the corner of the stall road. A repairer was working close to the spot, preparing for standing double timber, and whether his work brought about the fall, or the tram disturbed the double timber, is uncertain. The other men had very narrow escapes.

HARRISON Alfred - 1902 - 03/11/1902 – Age 15 - Chisnall Hall Taker off, Pearson and Knowles Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of side in road at bottom of jig brow.

HARRISON Benjamin - 1902 - 06/06/1902 – Age 35 - Old Roundwood Dataller, Terry Greaves and Co., Yorkshire. Died 26th June. He was setting a prop in a working place when the roof fell and fatally injured him. Cause a bump.

HARRISON David - 1909 - 11/08/1909 – Age 13 - Arley Yard Screen hand, J Scowcroft and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. When bringing some oil from the stores, across the railway, he got run over by some, which were being moved by the loco.

HARRISON Edward - 1904 - 13/06/1904 – Age 20 - Allanshaw No.1 Miner, Allanshaw Coal Co., Lanarkshire. The cause of the explosion has not been disclosed. The safety lamps were found locked but a key was found in a coat pocket. 2 killed.

HARRISON Frederick - 1905 - 21/03/1905 – Age 33 - Sandwell Park Driver, Sandwell Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed between door and tub drawn by a horse in a bolt hole. Died 4th April.

HARRISON George - 1901 - 17/01/1901 – Age 44 - Parr No.1 Collier, Richard Evans and Co., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was watching the shot lighter charge a hole when a piece of coal came away from a break capping one of the sprags and fatally injured deceased. Died 21st.

HARRISON George - 1904 - 17/12/1904 – Age 62 - Hyde Lane Labourer, Hyde Lane Colliery Co., Cheshire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. He appeared to have slipped and fallen off the House Coal bag stage, about five feet to the ground floor. He succumbed to the injuries received at the Ashton Infirmary, Dec. 26th. 1904.

HARRISON George - 1905 - 18/11/1905 – Age 35 - Dowlais Cardiff Repairer, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased and two fitters were walking up the south level, on opposite sides of the road. As a journey was approaching the fitters got into the manhole. Deceased for some reason tried to cross the road to join them but was knocked down, run over by the journey and killed. He knew the road well and could see and hear well. The level was 14 feet wide, and there was 4.5 feet between the rail and the left side. Where he attempted to cross to the right side of the level there was a manhole into which he ought to have got.

HARRISON Gomer - 1907 - 26/04/1907 – Age 33 - Bargoed Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof-clod at the face of his rippings from an unseen slant. He died on the 3rd December from the result of his injuries.

HARRISON Henry - 1907 - 12/03/1907 – Age 60 - Bailey Brook Sawyer, Butterley Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was cutting timber with a circular saw when the timber was thrown on to him. He died the same day.

HARRISON J.W. - 1905 - 01/09/1905 – Age 27 - Seaham Hewer, Londonderry Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Died on 15th from poisoning, owing to getting some dirty water into some small scratches on his knee whilst hewing. Nothing was known of the injury till after his death.

HARRISON James - 1903 - 31/07/1903 – Age 44 - Grassmoor No.2 Stallman, Grassmoor Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was clearing up preparing for a shot to be fired in the stall when a fall of roof occurred which fatally injured him. He died a few minutes after the accident.

HARRISON James - 1909 - 16/02/1909 – Age 35 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 3 Beaconsfield Terrace, Stanley.

HARRISON John - 1900 - 19/03/1900 – Age 63 - Coppice, Shipley Loader, EM Mundy, Derbyshire. Deceased received a slight injury in the mine on 23rd December 1899, but he died from retroperitoneal sarcoma or abdominal tumour which was not connected with the injury he received in the mine.

HARRISON John - 1907 - 11/07/1907 – Age 14 - Langtree Haulage hand, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. The lashing chain attaching a set of empty tubs to the haulage rope got loose, and the tubs running back fatally crushed deceased.

HARRISON John Thomas - 1901 - 18/01/1901 – Age 27 - Hewlett No.2 Dataller, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in abandoned roadway while repairing, came from a fault unknown to deceased. Fireman knew and ought to have told deceased. (Bad roof.)

HARRISON Patrick - 1904 - 13/06/1904 – Age 60 - Allanshaw No.1 Miner, Allanshaw Coal Co., Lanarkshire. The cause of the explosion has not been disclosed. The safety lamps were found locked but a key was found in a coat pocket. 2 killed.

HARRISON Richard - 1907 - 25/05/1907 – Age 34 - Brown Lees Collier, Robert Heath and Sons Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was working in a cutting 12 feet long by 6 feet wide made in forming a cog to support the roof in a drift in the Stoney Eight Feet Seam. The maximum distance between the props specified under Special Rule 19 was 5 feet 6 inches, but although some props were set closer than this one a space of 7 feet had been left, and in this space a fall of tops occurred, killing him instantly. Had the Special Rules been complied with the accident would probably have been prevented.

HARRISON Robert - 1904 - 03/05/1904 – Age 57 - New Oaks Collier, Cammel Laird and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Died from injuries received on March 25th last by a fall of stone. He was taking a full tub out of the place when it got off the rails and displaced a prop which caused the fall.

HARRISON Samuel – 1909 – 07/08/1909 – Age 38 – Spindlepoint Collier, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. At face of working place, when working out coal at junction of two slips, plainly to be seen; the special weakness of the roof called for bars to be set. (Roof good)

HARRISON Thomas – 1903 – 03/11/1903 – Age 63 – Eldon Furnaceman, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Died in banksman cabin previous to going down the pit.

HARRISON Thomas – 1904 – 06/10/1904 – Age 14 – Moss No.1 Pulley minder, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged on an endless rope haulage road and was found under the second full tub in a sett. No person witnessed the accident. He probably fell under the tubs when attending to the lashing chain passing over the pulleys.

HARRISON Thomas – 1908 – 18/08/1908 – Age 24 – Maypole Dataller, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

HARRISON Thomas – 1909 – 01/11/1909 – Age 17 - Eatock’s Haulage hand, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In roadway, while passing along a tunnel 12 feet wide, 6 feet high. He had been examining the haulage road and stopped to signal, exactly coincident with the fall of a piece of rock from each side of a bar. The stone was 14 feet long by 4 feet wide It must have been ripe to fall. (Roof average)

HARRISON Thomas – 1909 – 26/07/1909 – Age 16 – Aldwarke Main Pony driver, John Bown and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was found under the first of two full tubs which he was bringing out-bye. It is probable that he was adjusting points when he was caught by the tubs.

HARRISON Thomas William – 1903 – 24/02/1903 – Age 16 – Burradon Driver, Burradon and Coxlodge Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Died 25th February. The regular bankhead lad was off work and a rolleywayman had taken his place. A full tub at the bankhead of a selfacting incline was standing against a chock and another full tub was allowed to strike it too hard and in consequence the pin of the chock gave way and the first tub ran to the bottom of the incline passing a runaway switch which did not appear to be in position for derailing the tub and deceased, a driver, was fatally crushed. The bankhead was too steep for safety.

HARRISON Thomas William – 1908 – 29/09/1908 – Age 24 – Dowlow Quarry Engine driver, Dowlow Lime and Stone Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was moving a large driving belt from a loose to a fast pulley when it came off the driving pulley of the engine and struck deceased, killing him.

HARRISON William – 1901 – 01/10/1901 – Age 23 – Parr No.4 Haulage hand, Richard Evans and Co., St.Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased knocked over by some tubs in the endless rope downbrow at a landing owing to his brother making a mistake with the clutches, in connection with the haulage arrangements, top of downbrow. He succumbed to the injuries received. February 13th, 1902.

HARRISON William – 1901 – 06/04/1901 – Age 46 – Thrislington Stoneman, Thrislington Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was pushing powder into a hole, with a copper stemmer, when it exploded and killed him and injured a man who was working with him.

HARRISON William - 1902 - 11/08/1902 – Age 46 – Whitburn Hewer, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died 11th October 1902. On 11th August deceased received a slight injury to his shoulder by a fall of stone in the pit and was off work till 25th August when he was given lighter work, as the doctor reported he was not, at present, able to do heavy work. He had only resumed a few days when he stopped work owing to dyspepsia and died suddenly away from home. An inquest was held and a post mortem examination made, and it was found that death was due to heart disease.

HARRISON William – 1903 – 20/01/1903 – Age 22 – East Tanfield Hewer, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased and another hewer were hewing in a lift in the broken workings of the Busty seam when a large stone released by a joint and micaceous parting fell from the roof at the fast side on him. The place had been propped and examined by the deputy and there was an ample supply of loose props near. The Local Inspectors on examining the place reported that their opinion was that it was a pure accident and no one was to blame.

HARRISON William Thomas – 1907 – 11/08/1907 – Age 21 – Lindal Cote, Iron Ore Boiler fireman, Harrison Ainslie and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Died September 25. At the request of the engineman, deceased went to remove some ballast from the ballast-box, affixed to the end of the bell-crank in connection with the pumps. The balance-box is 6 feet deep and works in a pit about the same depth. At the time of the accident the box was at its highest position and clear of the pit, the pumps being stationary. The night was wild and dark and deceased took a lamp, climbed into the box and threw out the necessary amount of ballast. His lamp had in the interim been blown out and in getting out of the box in the darkness he fell into the pit. His injuries were not, at first, considered sufficiently serious to report,.

HARRISON Wilmot – 1901 – 27/05/1901 – Age 26 – Talk o’th’ Hill Pump attendant. Talk o’th’ Hill Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust caused by a gob fire. 4 killed.

HARROD Surtees – 1904 – 25/08/1904 – Age 14 – Wingate Grange Driver, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery, Co.Durham. He got his head fast between a prop and a tub at a flat. He had been riding on the limbers and as soon as he moved his head he struck the bar.

HARROGAN Hugh – 1900 – 17/08/1900 – Age 47 – Cadder No.17 Miner, Carron Co., Lanarkshire. While going up a self acting incline he was run over by a runaway hutch.

HARROWER Andrew – 1901 – 08/04/1901 – Age 17 – Devon Miner, Alloa Coal Co. Ltd., Clackmannan. Deceased worked in a place, 17 feet wide going to the rise in a seam 4.5 feet thick. The coal had been holed and a shot fired which did not bring it down and they appear to have been improving the holing previous to another shot when the coal came over. 2 killed.

HARROWER David Kerr – 1900 – 13/02/1900 – Age 13 – Grangemouth Stone picker, Grangemouth Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. Crushed by the connecting rod of the pumping engine.

HARROWER Robert – 1900 – 06/12/1900 – Age 40 – Benarty Contractor, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased emerged from a bench to shift the points on the main dook road as the rake left to ascend to the top and a coupling breaking, four tubs ran back on him and he was crushed, internally his injuries proved fatal three days afterwards. The coupling was made of iron and the broken link appeared to be defective.

HARRISON James – 1909 – 01/04/1909 – Age 34 – New Hucknall Screenman, New Hucknall Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Empty railway wagons were being put under the screens and deceased was knocked down and killed. Deceased had no coupling pole and it appears probable that he got between the wagons for the purpose of uncoupling them.

HARRY Edward – 1907 – 05/03/1907 – Age 21 – Genwen Trammer, David Harry and Bros., Carmarthen. Explosion of firedamp or coal dust. 6 killed.

HARRY Henry – 1908 – 03/12/1908 – Age 60 – Morlais Waggon shunter, Thomas Williams and Sons, Carmarthen. While engaged near the screens in moving waggons, which were set in motion by a steam crab, he got crushed between the buffers.

HARRY John – 1909 – Age 60 – Gwerna Haulier, New Gwerna Colliery Co., Monmouth. He was in charge of a horse, working a horse gin underground for hauling wagons up an inclined road. The horse from some unknown cause appears to have bolted and deceased was crushed in the bowels by the arm or pole of the gin to which the horse was attached. He died about 20 minutes afterwards

HART Benjamin - 1901 - 04/12/1901 – Age 20 - Tillery, Vivian Night labourer, Powell Tillery Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When lifting a stone into a tram it is alleged that he strained himself. Spinal meningitis set in and he died the 14th December.

HART Charles - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 52 - East Tanfield Hewer, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. The Brockwell seam, in which the accident happened, is with coal and band 5.5 feet thick and the blue metal roof is very subject to pot bottoms locally known as ‘cauldron arses’ and while deceased was hewing in a longwall place, one of these shaped like a truncated cone 5.5 feet diameter at the base and 2 feet 3 inches high fell upon him. Its upper surface was of glassy keenness. It extended from the coal face to the pack and broke down a prop, one of three set under a plank and part of the plank. The deputy had examined the place about 1.5 hours before the accident and noticed no signs of danger. There were two other points in the place out of which pot bottoms had come away, either fallen or been taken down. There was plenty of loose timber at hand. The Local Inspectors reported, ‘it is a pure accident.'

HART George - 1900 - 08/02/1900 – Age 40 - Deep Navigation Haulier, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. He was riding on the gun when the britch of the horse came loose and he fell under the trams of coal. Died February 13th.

HART George - 1901 - 16/09/1901 – Age 54 - Netherseal Banksman, Netherseal Colliery Co., Leicestershire. He had a fit of apoplexy while at work and died suddenly. An inquest was held and a verdict of 'died from apoplexy'.

HART James - 1908 - 04/11/1908 – Age 58 - Hulton Dataller, Hulton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In gateway repairing, from a pothole fully exposed. Ought to have been pulled down or a bar put under to secure it. (Died 28th November) (Good roof)

HART John - 1902 - 11/04/1902 – Age 17 - Crawford No.1 Drawer, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was pushing an empty tub along the level past the entrance to a drawing road when a fall of roof occurred capping a bar and two props and causing him such injuries that he died on the 13th.

HART John - 1905 - 16/08/1905 – Age 25 - Bond’s Main Dayman, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was uncapping a prop in a stall when a pot-hole fell out and fatally injured him. Ringer-and-chain were not used. He died August 30th.

HART Thomas – 1903 – 21/02/1903 – Age 43 – Congreaves Cager, Robert Fellows, Staffordshire. Found under the cage at the bottom of the shaft. No one saw how he got there. There was not a proper road from one side of the shaft bottom to the other side.

HART Thomas – 1906 – 16/11/1906 – Age 48 – Bedford Collier, John Speakman and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of coal from working face, whilst setting a sprag under the personal direction of a fireman, the latter admitted that had he discovered the coil was so ripe as to be ready to fall he would have ordered it to be pulled down. A pity he did not. Died 24th.

HART William - 1901 - 18/05/1901 – Age 24 - Hucknall No.2 Dayman, Hucknall Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. Fall of side. Some bars had been taken out at the gate end and the roof had fallen. Deceased was making the place right when the side of the roadway fell off and fatally injured him. He died the same day.

HARTLAND Abraham - 1905 - 01/05/1905 – Age 50 - Blackwell A Stallman, Blackwell Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof and coal. Deceased was working at the coal face when the tool broke over the solid coal and fatally injured him. He died 10th May.

HARTLETT John - 1900 - 12/12/1900 – Age 48 - Wyken Engine fitter, Wyken Colliery Co., Warwickshire. While travelling down an engine plane he was struck and run over by the ascending train of full tubs. He was within three yards of a manhole at the time.

HARTLEY A. - 1900 - 05/02/1899 – Age 46 - Park Hill Byeworker, Victoria Coal and Coke Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

HARTLEY Archer - 1904 - 19/07/1904 – Age 18 - Denaby Main Pony driver, Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He was taking a set of 14 full tubs up the engine plane and when his pony was passing through a doorway at a trot he stumbled and fell and the first tub passed over and fatally injured him.

HARTLEY Arthur - 1900 - 13/11/1900 – Age 19 - Cannock Chase Wagonman, Cannock Chase Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed between a loaded truck at rest and three empty ones in motion.

HARTLEY Edward - 1902 - 15/07/1902 – Age 14 - Southrigg Jigger boy, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was found crushed between two loaded tubs which had collided. The rope had left the jiggers on one of the tubs and apparently had not be properly fitted. The system of haulage was endless rope.

HARTLEY F. - 1900 - 18/01/1900 – Age 26 - Thorpe Sandstone Quarry Saw feeder, Pawson Bros., Yorkshire. He was raising a strap which was slipping when he overbalanced and fell into the flywheel.

HARTLEY James - 1906 - 04/09/1906 – Age 41 - Fletcher Bank Stone Quarry Craneman, Messrs Smith and Johnson, Lancashire. Fell 55 feet from the crane gantry over the Quarry hole. Probably he was examining the under part of the crane, and slipped from one of the beams.

HARTLEY Thomas - 1901 - 29/08/1901 – Age 49 - Rothwell Haigh Miner, J and J Charlesworth Ltd., Yorkshire. Buried by a fall of rock when drawing timber from a waste.

HARTLEY Walter - 1909 - 12/11/1909 – Age 27 - Moorfields Fireman, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In roadway, preparing to make it a chain road. He had taken down a long length of roof to increase the height and this was almost removed. The fireman was passing along preparing to leave when a huge stone crashed on to them from the roof, 12 feet long, 4 feet wide. There was no indication of slips it was a strong shale. Although several good men had examined the place, no danger was discovered. (Roof good). 2 killed.

HARTOPP Joseph - 1904 - 06/06/1904 – Age 16 - Exhall Incline boy, Exhall Colliery Co., Warwick. He was swinging on a steel girder in the main roadway when he fell off and expired. It was found by the coroner’s jury that he died from electrocution due to leakage of current from cables.

HARTSHAM Lamech - 1906 - 08/03/1906 – Age 32 - Arley Stallman, Arley Colliery Co., Warwick. Fall of roof. While pushing a loaded tub along the gateway a piece of stone fell from the roof and struck him on the head causing instant death.

HARTSHORNE John - 1903 - 22/01/1903 – Age 38 - Ryefield Banksman, Denby Iron and Coal Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was lowering a partly loaded truck under the screens and when attempting to put a scotch in front of the back wheel the axle box of the truck caught and crushed him between it and an upright post supporting the screens.

HARTSON John Charles - 1906 - 05/03/1906 – Age 38 - New Oaks Collier, Cammell Laird and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He and two others were working at a short face in a pillar and the deceased was in the act of filling a tub when a piece of coal fell upon and injured him so severely that he died the following morning. It measured 5 feet long by 1 foot 4 inches wide by 1 foot 5 inches thick, and ought to have been got down.

HARTSTHORNE W.J. - 1901 - 13/06/1901 – Age 49 - Cannock & Rugeley Undermanager, Cannock & Rugeley Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. He was temporarily helping to attach the tubs to the rope of a self-acting endless rope incline. He failed to screw one of the grips tightly and the result was two full tubs ran upon him and killed him. He was about to be appointed Undermanager of the mine.

HARTWELL Joseph - 1908 - 20/02/1908 – Age 52 - Bone Mill, Sand Quarry Labourer, Executors of R Mason, Worcester. Deceased was stripping off the surface gravel to bare the sand on a ledge, 7 feet 3 inches wide. When going to fetch his pipe, or for some other purpose, he appeared to have tripped over some turfs laid along the edge of the ledge to prevent loose stones falling on the workmen below, and fallen headlong on to a lower ledge, a distance of 2 feet 9 inches. He was killed instantly. He had quite recently recovered from an attack of influenza and had been complaining of giddiness.

HARVEY Bernard - 1903 - 03/04/1903 – Age 58 - Swalwell Hewer, Dunston Garesfield Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. About half-an-hour after deceased had started work, in a headways 9 feet wide in the Brockwell seam, a large stone like a cauldron arse and with a glassy parting on its upper surface fell from the roof close to the face he was working at, canting out two props which had been placed under it. The place had been properly inspected and loose timber was near at hand. Deceased was considered a very careful man. The Local Inspectors reported they were of opinion that 'it has been a pure accident.'

HARVEY Charles - 1900 - 01/06/1900 – Age 55 - Cannock & Rugeley Header, Cannock & Rugeley Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fatally struck by stone projected by a shot. Died 16th June.

HARVEY Henry - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 45 - Cambrian No.1 Haulier, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

HARVEY Henry - 1908 - 15/02/1908 – Age 17 - Brereton Coppice Horse driver, Earl of Shrewsbury, Staffordshire. Irruption of water. 3 killed.

HARVEY Herbert - 1900 - 13/07/1900 – Age 35 - Cannock Chase Stallman, Cannock Chase Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof in a shallow stall at mouth of a waste when getting top coal down.

HARVEY Jasper - 1906 - 18/12/1906 – Age 21 - Llanhilleth Collier, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. After loosening a sprag, the coal which it was supporting moved and stuck on the sprag. He struck the top end of the sprag with his mandrill, when instead of its falling away from him, as he expected, the coal forced it out, so that it struck his head and killed him instantly. Apparently a pure accident and bad luck, but a gablock and chain would have saved him.

HARVEY John - 1901 - 24/05/1901 - Universal Labourer, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

HARVEY John - 1909 - 23/07/1909 – Age 65 - Cannock Chase No.5 Engineman, Cannock Chase Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was changing a pump bucket in a feed well 30 feet deep, 5 feet in diameter at top, diminishing to 3 feet at the bottom. The bucket was drawn up by a rope, and he was following it, climbing by the buntons or stays, which were 9 feet to 4 feet apart. When nearly at the top he slipped and fell headlong to the bottom, where he was jammed between the suction pipes and the side of the well, his body being entirely under water. His body was recovered about 1.5 hours afterwards. The well had been in use 32 years; deceased was said to have descended it "over a hundred times," and no complaint had ever been made about it. A ladder has since been introduced.

HARVEY - Richard - 1901 - 06/06/1901 – Age 49 - Dolcoath, Tin Miner, Dolcoath Mine Ltd., Cornwall. Explosion of compressed powder which he and his partner were ramming into a hole by means of a copper rammer. The hole was too small at the bottom to receive the cartridge.

HARVEY William - 1904 - 17/09/1904 – Age 22 - Acton Hall Waggon loader, Acton Hall Colliery Co., Yorkshire. A waggon had been left with it’s brake pinned down at the top of the screens, about 300 yards above them. Two other waggons where shot against the standing one, when the brake failed to hold it ran down the gradient, it collided against three others and this forced them over the brake which was holding them. He was crossing the line and fatally injured. It was afterwards found that the waggon was defective.

HARVEY William - 1908 - 15/08/1908 – Age 17 - New Haden Trammer, Bassano Bros., Staffordshire. Deceased and another youth were tramming tubs and loads along 27 yards of gob road, inclined at 2 to 3 inches per yard against the empties, between the main level and a shunt where they received loads from the face. When they arrived at the shunt the other youth told deceased to go down to the level and see that all was clear for a load to go down, which load he could hear coming along the top length. As soon as the load came to hand he started down with it. After going about 8 yards the load stopped, and examination as to the cause showed the trammer that the deceased had been coming up and was caught between the top of the load and a low bar.

HARWOOD Richard - 1909 - 14/05/1909 – Age 44 - Cranberry Moss Collier, R Entwistle and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of clay from side of drawing road, he had come 60 yards from his own working place to speak to a collier, this person was engaged prising, with a crowbar, loose fireclay from the side of the road, by direction of the fireman. Levering a piece of clay allowed the deceased to come close to the tub, when a larger piece than was expected fell, crushing his head on the tub.

HASELDEN Thomas - 1908 - 24/03/1908 – Age 55 - Leyland Green Collier, Winstanley Collieries, Wigan, Lancashire. When working at the face, a fall of roof occurred upon him from some slips capping the props.

HASELTINE Jonas - 1904 - 12/08/1904 – Age 40 - Butterknowle, Diamond Shifter, Butterknowle Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of a large stone from a slippy back and joint in the roof killed him.

HASLAM John - 1900 - 04/04/1900 – Age 41 - Outwood Collier, Thomas Fletcher and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place, 4 bars collapsed and the first bar gave way, it had just been put up, it had no weight on it but probably not well set. (Roof bad, locally generally good)

HASSELL Thomas - 1903 - 18/03/1903 – Age 43 - Shelton No.2, Rowhurst Collier, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of side (coal) at working face in Rowhurst seam from a break. He had taken out a stretcher to drop the coal but it did not fall and he commenced to cut into it without resetting the timber.

HASTINGS James Bagnall - 1901 - 09/06/1901 – Age 18 - Littleton Pump minder, Littleton Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. He was getting water with a bucket from the reservoir when he fell in and was drowned.

HASTINGS Robert Palmer - 1907 - 18/12/1907 - Age 14 - Whitburn Haulage lad, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died December 19. Deceased worked near the bottom of a self-acting incline, about 100 yards long laid with double way the whole distance, and provided with a travelling way on one side and statutory refuge holes. This set consisted of 16 tubs. During a temporary cessation of work he left this point, at which he was employed, and travelled up this incline to see a companion who worked at the top. While he was on this incline the sets began to run and he was caught by them at meetings. The empty set had four of its tubs derailed. He had been warned not to leave his post. The Local Inspectors in their report stated ‘We find that he was caught by this set and that he was not at his work.’

HATHAWAY E. - 1906 - 26/06/1906 – Age 25 - Caradog Vale Collier, South Wales United Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Irruption of water 4 killed.

HATHER Thomas - 1907 - 26/07/1907 – Age 34 - Silverwood Collier, Dalton Main Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. When he and his mates arrived at their working place they noticed that the roof had weighted, and after examining and sounding decided to set some more timbers. He got a prop set and was tightening it, when a large fall occurred, displacing a portion of the gate pack and a number of props and killed him.

HATHERALL Edwin - 1903 - 14/07/1903 – Age 30 - Lady Windsor Hitcher, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was killed by the cage descending on him while he was crossing through the shaft. A passage was provided at the side so there was no need for him to cross through the shaft.

HATHERLEY Samuel William - 1902 - 23/01/1902 – Age 18 - Swanwick, Deep Dataller, CRP Morewood, Derbyshire. Suffocated by carbon-monoxide. The two men were working in an airway which passed by and communicated with some old workings. The two deceased were found dead. A few days after the fatality a gob-fire was found to have broken out. 2 killed.

HATTON James - 1906 - 14/10/1906 – Age 14 - Wingate Shifter, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery Ltd., Co.Durham. Explosion of coal dust result of shot firing. 25 killed.

HATTON Shilton - 1902 - 11/06/1902 – Age 25 - Baddesley Shunter, Baddesley Colliery Trustees, Warwickshire. He was crushed between a locomotive and a railway wagon on the siding of the London and North Western Railway adjacent to the colliery.

HAUGHTON Robert - 1905 - 02/06/1905 – Age 45 - Worsley Menses Contractor, Worsley Menses Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. Deceased met with a fatal accident, which was due to the explosive saxonite exploding when he was charging the hole with a copper rammer. The first part of the charge only had been put in, the detonator not being in the hole at the time, so that the shot apparently exploded through friction or concussion.

HAUGHY Peter - 1902 - 20/08/1901 – Age 26 - Douglas Brusher, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was withdrawing the last props under the brushing prior to a shot being fired when the roof suddenly fell.

HAUGUE T. - 1901 - 17/01/1901 – Age 60 - Wharncliffe Silkstone Screener, Wharncliffe Silkstone Colliery Co., Yorkshire. Four empty waggons were being lowered to add to others standing under the screens. He, when crossing the rails, was crushed between the buffers.

HAWKE Frank - 1908 - 20/03/1908 – Age 47 - Thrybergh Hall Dataller, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. The deceased and another man were repairing and re-opening an old haulage road. On the top of the bars, at the place in which the accident occurred, there was a stratum of bind mixed with ironstone balls below a rock roof. The bars were being uncovered and the stone, up to the rock, dropped through them on to the floor below, and it was then intended to remove the bars and build a pack on the right or top side of the road. The road was an old one and this side was broken from the rock above. At the time of the accident the deceased had his hand on the stone to detect any movement in it and to warn his mate when it suddenly fell, displaced two stretchers, and killed him instantly.

HAWKERS Charles Thomas - 1905 - 18/08/1905 – Age 24 - Gedling Shunter, Digby Colliery Co., Nottinghamshire. He was attempting to stop some runaway railway wagons by throwing a pit prop into the wheels when he was thrown under the wagons and killed.

HAWKES Charles - 1903 - 03/10/1903 – Age 27 - Cadeby Main Asst. onsetter, Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He was working overtime cleaning the sump when he was crushed by the descending cage He had been warned that the cage would be coming and he either misunderstood or forgot it.
