JONES Mary - 1906 - 26/03/1906 – Age 64 - New Tredegar, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Found dead on the Rhymney Branch Railway leading to New Tredegar Colliery, on the 26th March, having been run over during shunting operations. Female.

JONES Morgan - 1904 - 11/05?/1904 – Age 25 - Pochin Collier, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was found dead in his working place by the night examiner, he was buried under a fall of roof coal at 3.30 am. when going his rounds examining. The coal fell from three slips. This is another instance of the present system of timbering proving insufficient to meet the conditions. The accident evidently happened about 5 pm, which shows how desirable it is that there should be an efficient system of checking men leaving work. It is carried out at the mines on the Continent and is consequently quite practicable if the management in this country would only introduce it in a systematic manner.

JONES Morgan Hugh - 1907 - 10/11/1907 – Age 33 - Seven Sisters Overman, Evans and Bevan, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp or coal dust. 5 killed.

JONES Morris - 1906 - 24/01/1906 – Age 66 - Oakley, Slate Slate getter, Oakeley Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. Fatally injured by the explosion of a charge of gelignite and gunpowder while he was ramming it with a phosphor bronze stemmer.

JONES Noah - 1902 - 05/03/1902 – Age 43 - Bamfurlong Collier, Cross Tetley and Co., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inquiry made. Deceased appears to have knocked his head against a prop in the mine on his way to the bottom of the pit. He died 8th May 1902 from a growth on the brain accelerated by the accident.

JONES Noah - 1903 - 18/06/1903 – Age 44 - Baggeridge Sinker, Earl of Dudley, Stafford. Shaft accident.

JONES Noah - 1904 - 01/12/1904 – Age 14 - Maesteg Merthyr Collier’s boy, Elders Navigation Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, whilst filling a tram a stone 7 feet long, 2 feet broad fell from the roof, a strong clift, and killed deceased on the spot. Four feet seam.

JONES Oliver - 1907 - 07/12/1907 – Age 16 - Cwm Capel Carter, John Rowlands and Co., Camarthen. A barrier of coal, not more than six inches in thickness at the holing under the seam gave way, and a quantity of water lodged in old workings to the rise of the present colliery workings rushed into the ‘tophole’. Oliver Jones was struck down and was carried away by the water. His death was due to concussion of the brain sustained by his head striking against the sides of the roadway. Sydney Gower received such injuries in getting away that he also died on 18th December. 2 killed.

JONES Owen - 1902 - 11/03/1902 – Age 36 - Maenofferen, Slate Miner, Maenofferen Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Merioneth. While he was passing beneath a place, where he had done some blasting a few minutes previous, a piece of rock fell upon him and killed him on the spot. He had not take the precaution of examining the place before passing beneath it.

JONES Owen - 1907 - 15/02/1907 – Age 38 - Dinorwic, Slate Quarry Slate getter, Charles G Assheton-Smith, Carnarvon. He was struck by a stone weighing about 60 lbs. which fell from a height of 25 yards.

JONES Peter - 1904 - 11/04/1904 – Age 37 - Treeton Miner, Rothervale Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He and another man were cutting some overhanging coal when a quantity of stone above fell and killed him on the spot. The fall came from slips neither of which could be seen before the fall took place and two props were displaced.

JONES Peter - 1905 - 01/02/1905 – Age 46 - Talacre Hall, Sandstone Quarry Quarryman, JD and W Bulcock Ltd., Flint. As he was working on a ledge some overburden, which had not been sufficiently cleared back, fell and knocked him over to the bottom of the Quarry.

JONES Phillip - 1903 - 19/01/1903 – Age 15 - Cwmdu Drift Collier boy, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face, roof coal 8 feet by 4.5 feet by 28 inches thick, fell from between two slips and discharged two props and injured deceased so badly that he died in a few hours. Nine feet seam.

JONES Pryce - 1904 - 13/07/1904 – Age 20 - Bedlinog No.2 Assistant repairer, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. At face shale, 2 feet 10 inches by 15 inches by 10 inches thick. Deceased and his brother were ripping in the face of a gob heading. The piece of shale which fell formed part of the ripping. Ras Las seam.

JONES R.R. - 1904 - 03/02/1904 – Age 19 - Pandy Haulier, Naval Colliery Co. (1897) Ltd., Glamorgan. As deceased removed a sprag from the wheel of one of three trams coupled together, the horse and trams moved on and crushed him against the arms so badly that he died in 10 days. The accident occurred at a turn where there was only a space of 6 inches on one side between the train and the arms.

JONES Rees - 1902 - 03/09/1902 – Age 26 - McLaren Labourer, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp in the Yard Vein seam. Caused by working near to or in a large accumulation of gas. 16 killed.

JONES Rees - 1903 - 25/02/1903 – Age 45 - Darran Repairer, Darran Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed.

JONES Rees - 1907 - 12/04/1907 – Age 24 - Marine Collier, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall or roof at the face of a Barry work in the Big Vein, N.W. District. The stone, a large one, 3 or 4 feet thick, fell suddenly from slips which were previously invisible. The place was fairly well timbered.

JONES Rice - 1905 - 12/09/1905 – Age 41 - Ebbw Vale Waun Llwyd Repairer, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall from the side of read where he had just finished taking his meal with five others. The stone which fell was about 20 to 30 lbs. weight and cut his head; at the time it was considered trivial, but which the doctor stated in evidence at the inquest resulted in an abscess, which caused death on the 5th of November.

JONES Richard - 1901 - 20/09/1901 – Age 28 - Ynyswen sandstone Quarry Labourer, David Evans, Carmarthen. While working on a ledge, about 4 feet wide, baring down some shale a piece above him gave way knocking him down a height of 16 feet where he was again struck by other falling pieces. This Quarry was not worked regularly and neither deceased nor his companion were experienced Quarrymen.

JONES Richard - 1902 - 05/03/1902 – Age 18 - Cwm Cynon Collier, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal, 4 feet 8 inches by 2 feet 7 inches by 18 inches thick, which in being drawn down fell against and knocked out a prop which struck deceased on his abdomen. Died the next day. Six feet seam.

JONES Richard - 1902 - 07/08/1902 – Age 21 - South Duffryn No.1 Rider, Hills Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was crushed between the full trams and the side after he had disconnected the electric signal wires which were disarranged. The engine man said he had a signal to pull up and did so but it is not likely that deceased gave a signal as there was not enough room between the tram and side for him to stand in safety. Died in five days.

JONES Richard - 1902 - 28/06/1902 – Age 40 - Porthywaen, Limestone Quarry Quarryman, Porthywaen Lime Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Fell off a ledge, 50 feet from bottom of the Quarry.

JONES Richard - 1903 - 10/12/1903 – Age 41 - Dolcoath Tin Shaftsman, Dolcoath Mine Ltd., Cornwall. He fell from the 314 fathom level in the Wheal Harriett Shaft to the 375 fathom level where he was found dead. The timber carrying the road over the shaft, which is underlaying, had decayed and upon his stepping on it after getting out of the gig it fell away with him. The man in charge of the signals sending the men up had not realised that a hole which he had noticed and over which he had thrown a few boards indicated a decayed condition of the bearers. The shaft men had repaired the part of the collar nearer the shaft only a few weeks before without observing the condition of these timbers.

JONES Richard - 1903 - 31/01/1903 – Age 62 - Shelton Deep Nightwatchman, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fell down directly after entering the colliery gates and injured his arm, mortification set in and he died on 8th February. He had previously lost the use of his arm by an accident and was in a bad state of health. He did not report to the colliery officials that he had received any injury.

JONES Richard - 1906 - 04/07/1906 – Age 25 - Ferndale No.1 Assistant repairer, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road. Fireclay, 10 feet by 8 feet by 1 foot thick, fell outside of some double timbers, which deceased was assisting in standing and he was caught by the end of the stone. It was unsupported. Two feet nine seam.

JONES Richard - 1906 - 16/05?/1906 – Age 62 - Newmarket Silkstone Collier, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. When getting coal a large pot hole was liberated and the stone fell, without any warning on to him and fractured his spine. Died on the 18th.

JONES Richard - 1907 - 25/01/1907 – Age 31 – Van, Lead Labourer, Van Mines Ltd., Montgomery. Instantly killed by a stone falling from the roof of stope.

JONES Richard - 1908 - 01/10/1908 – Age 33 - Abergorky No.3 Collier, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, cliff, part of rippings, 5 feet by 2 feet by 22 inches thick, fell on deceased as he was working some coal away to make room, it was said, to set a prop under it. No 2 seam.

JONES Richard - 1908 - 03/03/1908 – Age 39 - Presthope, Limestone Quarry Quarryman, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Deceased was lighting the fuse of a charge of loose blasting powder, placed in a vertical hole, which had already been cracked twice by similar charges. Some sparks from the fuse apparently fell into the cracks and ignited the charge as he was turning away. He was very badly burned and lacerated on the buttocks and back of thighs, and died from tetanus 5 days afterwards.

JONES Richard - 1909 - 17/07/1909 – Age 62 - Cwmcorrwg Collier, David Williams, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; while engaged at work at the coal face, a small stone fell from the shale roof upon his shoulders. The stone fell from between two props set 3 feet apart. He died 4th November from blood poisoning. Mountain Seam. Naked lights.

JONES Richard Henry - 1906 - 31/01/1906 – Age 19 - Littleton Horse driver, Littleton Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was taking a tub, weighing 29.75 cwts gross along a road dipping 2.75 inches per yard. He appeared to have been in front of the tub for some purpose and to have been caught and crushed by it, his neck being broken. The tub carried two drags, locking the four wheels.

JONES Richard W. - 1905 - 13/06/1905 – Age 31 - Dinorwic, Slate Quarry Slate getter, Charles G Assheton Smith, Carnarvon. As he started up the working face, to remove a block which he did not consider safe, it fell on to him.

JONES Robert - 1900 - 10/12/1900 – Age 36 - Cambrian Sinker, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck on head by a piece of timber which was being loaded into a waggon. Died in five days.

JONES Robert - 1900 - 19/06/1900 – Age 40 - Coegnant Repairer, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 21 feet x 10 feet x 6 feet thick, while clearing a fall near a parting, four pairs of double timbers crushed out by a fresh fall. Six feet seam.

JONES Robert - 1901 - 24/05?/1901 - Universal Waller, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

JONES Robert - 1901 - 28/06/1901 – Age 44 - Binchester Hewer, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. While kirving a jud the coal fell over and caught and killed him.

JONES Robert - 1903 - 13/07/1903 – Age 20 - Ferndale No. 8 Labourer, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck by a haulage sheave which was liberated by the breaking of a cotter pin. He died in four days.

JONES Robert - 1904 - 14/12/1904 – Age 63 - Llanddulas, Limestone Quarry Labourer, Llanddulas Quarry Co., Denbigh. While he was pushing a waggon along a tramway, crossed by an elevator, a stone fell on to him and fractured his skull. Pneumonia set in as a result of the accident.

JONES Robert - 1904 - 16/02/1904 – Age 31 - Sovereign No.2 Fan pit Browman, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fell 200 yards in shaft. No eye-witness. Engineman verbally told to raise the rope with four chains and hooks from the surface landing to the pitbrow (16 feet), there the chains were to be hooked to a square tub to lower sand down the pit; the signal to raise was given, by deceased, the rope raised and no further signals being received by the engineman he went and found the deceased, the body was found down the shaft, where footmarks, on the boards at the top landing, and it is thought deceased had recklessly taken hold of the rope chains and hung on to be raised to the top landing; in attempting to swing over the boards he failed and fell from the chains.

JONES Robert - 1904 - 27/07/1904 – Age 40 - Westminster Repairer, Westminster & Brymbo Coal & Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were engaged cutting the bottom in the downbrow and they appeared to have weakened the prop supports as the roof gave way capping two props and fatally injuring them. It was advised at the inquiry that the road should be barred. 2 killed.

JONES Robert - 1905 - 17/01/1905 – Age 52 - Tonna Dafid Quarry Quarryman, John James Evans, Glamorgan. While passing a disused part of the Quarry face a stone, a pound or two in weight, fell from a height of about 45 feet and struck him on the head fracturing his skull. Deceased had warned the other men that morning not to pass the place having noticed some danger from the overburden.

JONES Robert - 1906 - 18/10/1906 – Age 49 - Votty & Bowydd Slate, Slate getter, Votty & Bowydd Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. As he walked in from an empty waggon he was crushed between it and a full one which he had failed to observe coming down a slight gradient.

JONES Robert - 1906 - 31/03/1906 – Age 35 - Mardy No.1 Fireman, Lockets Merthyr Collieries (1894) Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was illegally riding on the last shackle of a journey of coal, and in jumping off, before it came to a stand, he fell backwards under the trains. He died the next day.

JONES Robert - 1907 - 08/11/1907 – Age 69 - Votty & Bowydd, Slate Labourer, Votty & Bowydd Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. He hit his head against a sharp slate. Died of blood-poisoning a week later.

JONES Robert - 1908 - 08/11/1908 – Age 26 - Burnmoor Stoneman, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Struck by a stone from a shot on a waggon-way.

JONES Robert - 1908 - 11/12/1908 – Age 14 - Houghton Flatter, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was, unknown to the driver, riding inbye on a driver's set, when some stone fell, together with some timber, and pinned his head on the edge of the tub. He had no right to be in the tub.

JONES Robert - 1909 - 26/04/1909 – Age 24 - Brynkinalt Holer, WY Craig and Sons, Denbigh. When holing under the coal, a piece of coal fell off the face from a slip upon him capping the sprag.

JONES Robert J (injured) - 1909 - 27/09/09 - Ely Naval Colliery Co. (1897) Ltd., Glamorgan. Twenty eight men were descending. The reversing gear of the winding engine failed to act. The descending cage sped to the bottom and the ascending cage went upwards into the sheaves (which it broke) and then fell back down the pit onto the full cage. Five men in the upper deck were killed instantaneously. Those in the lower cage escaped with horrific injuries. Two died later in hospital. 7 killed 14 injured.

JONES Robert J. - 1904 - 14/06/1904 – Age 15 - Whitworth Collier’s boy, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Deceased having been sent with a message to the examiner and shotfirer was passing up through this working place just as a shot was fired. He was not seen by the men sent to give warning of the shot and was killed. This was due to inadequate warning proper means not having been taken to block all the entrances and see that all was clear before firing the shot. The examiner or shotlighter should have given the matter more care. It shows laxity on his part as an official. No doubt many other accidents occur through the same cause but cannot be so definitely fixed as in this case.

JONES Robert J. - 1905 - 09/03/1905 – Age 22 - Heaths Dee Drawer, Heaths Dee Colliery Co., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and another person were turning a windlass, which was bringing a full tub up a slant and the chain slipped off the coil on to another, throwing the handles probably out of their grasp when the revolving handle struck deceased on the head. He succumbed to the injuries received November 24, 1905.

JONES Robert Uzzill - 1908 - 08/08/1908 – Age 60 - Eifl, Augite Quarry Engine driver, Welsh Granite Co., Carnarvon. He was crushed between the locomotive and a gate post. Died on the 22nd.

JONES Rowland - 1902 - 21/03/1902 – Age 61 - Dorothea, Slate Quarry Slate getter, Dorothea Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. In walking down a heap of slate rubbish he fell and sustained two slight scalp wounds. Erysipelas set in, and he died on the 31st.

JONES Rowland - 1909 - 27/07/1909 – Age 19 - Fernhill No.1 Collier, George Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was entering the cage at an intermediate landing, when he inadvertently struck his head against a safety crossbar fitted to the cage, and reeling sideways, he fell through an opening, 16 inches wide into the shaft. Since the accident this opening has been reduced.

JONES Samuel - 1900 - 27/03/1900 – Age 49 - Priors Lee, Staffordshire Holer, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Blow on knee by fall of holing dirt in working face in Flint coal. He had previously strained the same knee while shoving a tub. Died next day from blood poisoning.

JONES Samuel - 1902 - 06/02/1902 – Age 51 - Bersham Collier, Bersham Colliery Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Timber had been drawn from the waste and when they were engaged packing a crush came over the place capping a bar and the roof fell upon deceased killing him.

JONES Samuel - 1903 - 16/12/1903 – Age 42 - Sovereign Collier, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway of working place from slip, which ought to have been seen by the fireman and directions given to take down the roof at the edge of ripping which was not supported. (Good roof).

JONES Samuel - 1903 - 26/03/1903 – Age 16 - National No.1 Collier boy, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face cliff, 9 feet by 44 feet by 4 feet thick, fell as deceased's father was setting a prop under it, between the last pair of timbers stood and the face. Two pairs of timbers, which had been stood 2.5 feet apart, were crushed out. Four feet seam.

JONES Samuel - 1905 - 16/10/1905 – Age 52 - Maypole Dataller, Moss Hall Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged in a roadway cutting timber when a weighting of the rock roof took place and a large stone from the roof and fell upon him. He expired before reaching the infirmary.

JONES Samuel - 1907 - 30/04/1907 – Age 43 - Oak Engineman, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Whilst oiling in motion, a small engine at the surface working pump for boilers, his clothing caught on a shaft end revolving 130 times a minute. He was carried round receiving fatal injuries. The shaft end was 3 inches diameter and projected from the masonry 6 inches.

JONES Samuel - 1909 - 01/01/1909 – Age 50 - Graig Merthyr Collier, Graigola Merthyr Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 5 killed.

JONES Samuel - 1909 - 20/01/1909 – Age 52 - Cwmaman Fireman, Cwmaman Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased, instead of getting into a manhole, to allow a full journey to pass, stood on the side of the road and was crushed between an awkwardly filled tram and the side. He died from the after effects of his injuries on Sept. 28th.

JONES Sidney John - 1901 - 05/12/1901 – Age 14 - Baddesley Pitbottom attendant, Baddesley Colliery Trustees, Warwickshire. Deceased had brought 12 full tubs towards the pit bottom and was coupling them to other full tubs in front when another boy allowed his train to bump in behind, at the time deceased was bending between the tubs, crushing deceased's head. He died on the 10th Dec.

JONES Stanley - 1908 - 09/04/1908 – Age 16 - Norton Hill Carting boy, Norton Hill Colliery Co., Somerset. Explosion of firedamp or coaldust. 10 killed.

JONES T. - 1905 - 03/02/1905 – Age 22 - Wooley Putter, Pease and Partners, Co.Durham. Fall of roof from between planks at a drawing road. Died 9th Feb. Planks 2 feet 7 inches apart. Stone fell from between two slips which met at the spot. The hewer was sitting under the slip getting his bait when he heard a noise coming with the tub. He got up and went into the bord and as the boy was under it the stone fell out.

JONES T. Price – 1900 – 25/06/1900 – Age 51 – Llan Collier, Evan Owens and Co., Glamorgan. Suffocated by carbonic acid gas on descending an old shaft, 8 yards deep. Thomas descended first and was seen to fall off the rope. Jones at once slid down the rope to his assistance. Both were dead when brought to surface. 2 killed.

JONES T.E. – 1905 – 29/08/1905 – Age 19 – Oswald Wagonwayman, Thomas Hedley Bros., Co.Durham. Something had occurred at the bottom of a staple pit which hindered the work. He, leaving his lamp, walked some 15 yards to the top of the staple to shout and ask what was the matter when he fell down and was so seriously injured that he died two days afterwards.

JONES Theophilus – 1903 – 12/02/1903 – Age 35 – Chanters Sinker, Fletcher Burrows and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In a shaft being sunk from the yard mine to the Arley Mine a hoppet or bucket full of stone, being raised to the yard mine, collided against the side of the frame at the yard mine landing the contents fell on to the men working at the bottom 60 yards below. One man killed, 6 injured.

JONES Thomas – 1900 – 08/02/1900 – Age 15 – Ynysfeio Collier boy, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall at face cliff, 20 inches x 14 inches x 6 inches thick, side props only. Gorllwyn seam.

JONES Thomas – 1900 – 09/07/1900 – Age 63 – Hafod clay Clay getter, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Some clay, which unexpectedly fell from a height of 5 feet, struck him on the back. He died of haemorrhage on the following day.

JONES Thomas – 1900 – 12/04/1900 – Age 48 – McLaren’s No.1 Haulier, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When stepping into the cage mouthing in the shaft he fell a distance of 40 yards to the bottom in consequence of the hitcher signalling the cage away while he was standing on the platform between the cage the landing.

JONES Thomas – 1900 – 15/08/1900 – Age 36 – Witley Stallman, Witley Colliery Co., Worcestershire. Fall of side. He incautiously went in front of a rate of Coal which he had tried to pull from the side. He was stooping when it fell upon him and broke his back. Died 2nd February, 1901.

JONES Thomas - 1900 - 20/03/1900 – Age 66 - Sirhowy No.7 Roadsman, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. It is alleged that when moving a stone, by pushing it with his feet, his back being against the wall he strained himself, and he died on the 26th March from the effects of a rupture. But for the Compensation Act this death in all portability would not have come under notice.

JONES Thomas – 1900 – 24/08/1900 – Age 13 – Clydach Merthyr Haulier, Graigola Merthyr Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. In attempting to get from a locomotive on to an empty waggon he slipped and fell under the loco. Died next day.

JONES Thomas – 1901 – 12/01/1901 – Age 29 – Hamstead Pikeman, Hamstead Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Fall of roof coal and timber in the thick coal seam. Cause a bump.

JONES Thomas – 1901 – 21/04/1901 – Age 42 – Park Slip Rider, Norths Navigation Collieries (1899) Ltd., Glamorgan. Slipped and fell as he was walking up the main slip taking the empty rope up from one stage to another and injured his head. A post mortem showed that the brain had been injured so as to account for death.

JONES Thomas – 1901 – 24/05?/1901 – Universal Ostler, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

JONES Thomas – 1901 – 24/05?/1901 – Universal Repairer, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

JONES Thomas – 1902 – 03/12/1902 – Age 30 – Bwllfa Dare Collier, Bwllfa and Merthyr Dare Collieries (1894) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff, 3 feet by 2 feet by 5 inches thick, it fell as he pulled down some coal. He was partially paralysed and died on 3rd November. Two feet nine seam.

JONES Thomas – 1903 – 03/04/1903 – Age 36 – Agecroft Collier, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed by tub which ran on to him whilst in the jigbrow repairing. The rope gave way at the so called splicing end of the rope, it merely threaded through. There was a manhole close by in which deceased ought to have stood until both tubs had completed the run in the self-acting incline.

JONES Thomas – 1903 – 04/05?/1903 – Age 29 – Dare Collier, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face coal, 4 feet by 2 feet by 6 feet thick broke in two at a sprag and fell on him as he was clearing away the butts. Died May 19. Seven feet seam.

JONES Thomas – 1903 – 04/05?/1903 – Age 30 – Deep Duffryn Collier, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. At face cliff, 10 feet by 4 feet 8 inches by 44 inches thick. Deceased wanted to get this stone down so commenced knocking the props out from under it and, when he knocked out the last the fall occurred. Its falling so suddenly was due to a false slip in the roof which could not be seen previous to the fall. Two feet nine seam.

JONES Thomas – 1903 – 13/02/1903 – Age 35 – Llysfaen & Pentregwyddel limestone Quarry, Quarryman, Kneeshaw and Lupton and Co., Carnarvon. Killed by the fall of a stone weighing about 3 cwt. from a height of 24 feet.

JONES Thomas – 1903 – 29/12/1903 – Age 55 – Penmaenmawr, Diorote Labourer, Brundit and Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. He scratched his hand while lighting fire at a weigh-house at the Quarry in 1903. Died of blood-poisoning on the 1st. January.

JONES Thomas – 1904 – 01/12/1904 – Age 38 – Westminster Collier, Westminster Brymbo Coal and Coke Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attend. Deceased had left a piece of top coal overhanging, with two sprags set under it about four feet apart; when the coal came away bringing sprags down with it, and fatally injuring him.

JONES Thomas – 1904 – 03/07/1904 – Age 69 – Granville No.1 Dayman, Granville Colliery Co., Derbyshire. He received a slight injury in the mine on 31st August, 1903, from which he recovered but he died from natural causes, ‘cancer’.

JONES Thomas – 1904 – 19/05?/1904 – Age 18 – Penrikyber Collier, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. At face, coal, 27 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet thick fell on deceased killing him and injuring two other men. This top coal from under which the bottom coal had been worked had been supported by four sprags and four props. When the sprags supporting 18 feet of the coal were knocked out to get the coal down the whole length fell crushing the four props roof exposed, unpropped, while the coal is being filled away. Six feet seam.

JONES Thomas – 1904 – 26/04/1904 – Age 43 – Bedford Collier, John Speakman and Sons, Lancashire. Whilst taking a full tub along the road, 9 yards from the face. Probably the tub going fast caught a leg under a bar and displaced it, causing the bar to fall and let down some broken roof on to deceased. (Average roof)

JONES Thomas - 1904 - 29/01/1904 – Age 49 - Ynysfaio Repairer, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Glamorgan. Deceased and two others were widening a roadway, to make a double parting. One sidewall on which to place steel girders had been built and room had been made for the wall on the other side. The roof had been secured by a pair of timbers and strong lags reaching from it to the last girder in position. Deceased heard a slight movement of the ground and got up on a stage to examine the roof when a heavy fall took place and crushed out the timbers and buried him.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 11/02/1905 – Age 45 - West Elliot Assistant timberman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in a heading in consequence of a collar breaking, which apparently cannot have been sound.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 11/07/1905 – Age 15 - National No.2 Collier boy, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported on by E Milner-Jones, FA Gray and JT Robson. 119 killed. 45, Hillside Terrace, Wattstown, buried at Llanwonno Cemetery on Saturday.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 11/07/1905 – Age 51 - National No.2 Collier, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported on by E Milner-Jones, FA Gray and JT Robson. 119 killed. 45, Hillside Terrace, Wattstown, buried at Llanwonno Cemetery on Saturday.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 13/04/1905 – Age 14 - Gurnos Collier boy, Gurnos Anthracite Colliery Co., Brecon. While passing up the main slant and within 15 yards of the surface he was struck by two empty trams which had run wild from the surface landing, the trams not having been shackled to the remaining five trams to which the rope was attached. The two trams were thrown off the rails at the catch points, but travelled about 12 yards further.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 21/02/1905 – Age 17 - Caerau Labourer, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over by empty ‘journey’ while attending a door on the main engine plane. No evidence to show how he came to be caught.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 21/07/1905 – Age 50 - Reservoir Deputy, Moira Colliery Co., Leicestershire. Fall of roof. The deceased, with others, had cut a hole for the end of a bar about to be set to support the roof of a main roadway and was moving a loose prop, when a small piece of roof fell and struck him upon the head causing concussion of the brain from which he died on 28th July.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 27/02/1905 – Age 55 - Rotherham Main Collier, John Brown and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He had just pulled down some coal and was in the act of throwing it on to a partly built pack, when a fall of roof caused by sudden weighting took place and killed him.

JONES Thomas - 1905 - 29/08/1905 – Age 26 - Cambrian No.2 Collier, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. At face cliff, 12 feet by 4 feet 9 inches by 18 inches thick, fell as deceased was cutting coal. The fireman told him to put up two or three props, to make the place safe until sufficient coal could be worked off to enable flats to be put up. Instead of doing so, he worked at the coal until he was killed. Had he obeyed orders, the accident would probably have been prevented. Red seam.

JONES Thomas - 1906 - 01/08/1906 – Age 52 - Cwmaman Haulier, Cwmaman Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was taking his horse to the stable and when within about 30 yards of it, he was knocked down by an outgoing journey and fatally injured. He could see that the main rope was in motion and I cannot understand why he did not get out of the way. The horse turned and ran back in front of the journey, and was uninjured. The roadway was of ample dimensions and was provided with sufficient manholes, opposite to one of which deceased was found.

JONES Thomas - 1906 - 03/09/1906 – Age 49 - Fochriw No.1 Haulier, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased had attached his horse to an empty tram, and was going towards the horse’s head when it started off at a trot. Deceased caught hold of a part of the harness and ran along for about 22 yards, when he fell, and was run over. The undermanager was within 3 or 4 yards of deceased when the accident occurred. The horse is said to be very quiet. Why he started off is a mystery.

JONES Thomas - 1906 - 04/09/1906 – Age 45 - White Moss Collier, White Moss Coal Co., Lancashire. Inspection made. While he was repairing the roadway, and in the act of levering a stone, he appears to have slipped, and in falling backwards on the rail, he broke his neck, and expired.

JONES Thomas - 1908 - 03/10/1908 – Age 60 - Cefn Slip Labourer, Bryndu Colliery Co., Glamorgan. The deceased either fell off a carriage, made for the conveyance of the workmen up and down a steep slant, or jumped off when he felt that the carriage he was riding in had become derailed. He died the same day from injuries he had received.

JONES Thomas - 1908 - 09/01/1908 – Age 42 - Darbishires’ Diorite Quarry Labourer, Darbishires’ Ltd., Carnarvon. A waggon which he was tipping sideways rolled over, and he was carried with it. The material inside the waggon was frozen.

JONES Thomas - 1908 - 12/09/1908 – Age 26 - Graham’s Navigation Shunter, Graham’s Navigation (Merthyr) Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. While engaged shunting or moving two full trucks, and trying to put the brakes down, he stumbled, owing to the unevenness of the ground, and his legs going across the rails were run over by the trucks. The siding was not in a satisfactory condition owing to accumulation of rubbish at the side of the rails.

JONES Thomas - 1908 - 13/01/1908 – Age 25 - Llanbradach Shotman, Cardiff Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This accident was the result of culpable carelessness. Deceased sent his assistant up the pit to fetch the electric battery for firing some shots. He then went to a staple pit, about 6 feet deep, laid the cable along the level, charged two shot-holes in the pit with Roburite No. 3, and attached the cable. Before he had time to leave the place his assistant returned and without calling to him, coupled the cable to the battery, and fired the shots. He, not being the person appointed to fire shots, had no business to have done so.

JONES Thomas - 1908 - 23/11/1908 – Age 71 - Clynmil Crossing minder, Hills Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was the attendant in charge of the level crossing, over which the traffic from the Clynmil drift crossed the main road from Cardiff to Merthyr. A train of seven uncoupled empty wagons, with the four landing brakes down, stood on the Clynmil side of the main road, and it was desired to run them across to a locomotive. A brakesman was sent from the locomotive to lift the brakes and let the wagons down. He did so, and, having seen the wagons in motion, walked towards the colliery screen. Deceased stood at the crossing and watched the first six wagons pass, but evidently did not notice the seventh was following slowly. He was in the act of crossing the road to warn some children, when he was knocked down and run over. He is said to have been an active old man, and possessed of good eyesight and hearing.

JONES Thomas - 1909 - 09/04/1909 – Age 68 - South Tunnel Roadman, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was cleaning a haulage road, 10 feet wide and 9 feet high, and well provided with manholes, when he was run over by an outgoing journey of full trams. His hearing is said to have been good.

JONES Thomas - 1909 - 09/08/1909 – Age 50 - Caphouse Miner, Executives of E Lister, Kaye, Yorkshire. He was drawing timber, and was using a hammer instead of proper timber drawing appliances when he was fatally injured by a fall of roof.

JONES Thomas - 1909 - 15/09/1909 – Age 49 - Wearmouth Hewer, Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of roof stone at longwall face.

JONES Thomas - 1909 - 27/10/1909 – Age 53 - Cefnystylle Collier, Cefnystylle Colliery Co., Glamorgan. In air shaft; he was engaged in repairing a woodlined air shaft, when a piece of timber on which he was standing gave way, and he fell a distance of 20 yards. He died from his injuries on the following day.

JONES Thomas - 1909 - 30/04/1909 – Age 45 - Durkar Miner, Crigglestone Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. The deceased, who was an experienced miner, neglected to set sufficient timber, with the result that a heavy fall of roof occurred and he was killed on the spot. His loader, who was a very young man, had suggested setting more timber, but Jones relied on the strong rock roof. The fall disclosed two previously unsuspected slips.

JONES Thomas Gwilym - 1902 - 16/10/1902 – Age 35 - Oakeley Slate Slate getter, Oakeley Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. He fell over the edge of a floor, a depth of 20 yards and was killed. He had to cross two fences before he got to the place from which he fell. It is probable that he went there for a private purpose.

JONES Thomas J. - 1908 - 22/05?/1908 – Age 36 - Moss No.3 Collier, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. He was working up a small step getting some top coal down, when a slip liberated the top coal and a large stone fell upon the deceased.

JONES Thomas J. - 1909 - 13/09/1909 – Age 46 - Plaspower Collier, Broughton and Plaspower Co., Denbigh. When engaged working at the coal face, at a step fault, a fall of roof occurred upon them, from between two slips, capping a prop. 2 killed.

JONES Thomas William - 1908 - 08/07/1908 – Age 33 - Donnington, Barracks Sinker, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Overwinding accident.

JONES W. - 1900 - 16/02/1900 – Age 54 - Werfa Repairer, James Evens and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 6 feet x 5.5 feet x 1.25 feet thick, fell as he was passing in to his work, a collar broke and a pair of timbers were crushed out.

JONES W.H. - 1905 - 03/11/1905 – Age 33 - Dinorwic Quarry Slate getter, Charles G Assheton Smith, Carnarvon. Unexpected fall of rock. His leg had to be amputated. He died on the 5th.

JONES W.J. - 1902 - 03/09/1902 – Age 17 - McLaren Labourer, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp in the Yard Vein seam. Caused by working near to or in a large accumulation of gas. 16 killed.

JONES Walter - 1904 - 14/06/1904 – Age 20 - Gigfran Quarry Labourer, Birmingham Corporation, Radnor. While walking in front of a crane he slipped and fell and was run over. It was his duty to scotch the wheels but how he came to be in front instead of on the side there was no evidence to show.

JONES William - 1900 - 22/02/1900 - Werfa James Evens and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by fall of stone. 1 killed, 1 injured.

JONES William - 1900 - 23/01/1900 – Age 49 - Cwmbran Collier, Patent Nut and Bolt Co. Ltd., Monmouth. An attempt was made to prove that it was the result of injuries received at Cwmbran Colliery on the 23rd January, 1899, but medical evidence proved that death was not attributable in any way to the accident. Not comprised.

JONES William - 1900 - 24/07/1900 – Age 50 - Ash Timberman, G Watkinson and Sons Ltd., Flint. Inspection made. A man was roofing down, making a roadway larger, when a stone fell which pinned him fast by the leg and when deceased went to loosen him some more roof fell and deceased was killed. He was killed through trying to save the other man’s life. More timber set would have prevented this accident.

JONES William - 1900 - 25/02/1900 – Werfa, Glamorgan. Crushed to death by falling stone. 1 killed, 1 injured.

JONES William - 1901 - 01/04/1901 – Age 33 - Sandbach Engineman, Smith and Pointon, Staffordshire. Explosion of firedamp in upcast shaft by a naked light. 2 killed.

JONES William - 1901 - 04/06/1901 – Age 17 - Minera Slate Labourer, Minera Mining Co. Ltd., Merioneth. He fell from the top of a wall and was run over by a truck drawn by a locomotive. He died two hours after.

JONES William - 1901 - 19/10/1901 – Age 30 - Penrikyber Quarry Labourer, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fell a depth of 53 feet from a ledge. No one knows what caused him to fall. Died in two days.

JONES William - 1901 - 21/01/1901 – Age 29 - Wynnstay Loader, Wynnstay Collieries Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made. He was turning his tub on the landing plate top of brake when a piece of coal off the longwall face, which must have been slightly overhanging and not secured fell over and crushed him against the tub killing him.

JONES William - 1901 - 27/11/1901 – Age 60 - Braighgoch Slate Slate getter, Braighgoch Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Merioneth. He was standing on a ladder charging a hole in an overhanging piece of rock weighing several tons, this unexpectedly fell and caused the ladder to slip. Deceased fell about 15 yards. Died on the 29th.

JONES William - 1902 - 03/02/1902 – Age 29 - Darbishire’s Granite Quarry Quarryman, Darbishire’s Ltd., Carnarvon. While he was barring down rock the ground on which he stood gave way under him and he fell with it, a distance of about 80 yards. Killed on the spot.

JONES William - 1902 - 04/06/1902 – Age 30 - Fochriw No.2 Repairer, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 8 killed.

JONES William - 1902 - 15/07/1902 – Age 19 - Tan’rallt, Slate Quarry Horse driver, Thomas Robinson, Carnarvon. While in charge of a horse he fell over the edge of a gallery down to the bottom of the Quarry, a distance of 25 yards. There was a clear space of 7 feet between the outer rail of the tramway and the edge of the gallery. The deceased was lame and subject to fits and should never have been put in charge of a horse in such a place.

JONES William - 1903 - 03/09/1903 – Age 57 - Deaf Hill Hewer, Trimdon Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Alleged to have died from injuries received by falling on flat sheets but a post mortem examination showed death was due to natural causes.

JONES William - 1903 - 13/02/1903 – Age 30 - Forge Slope Collier, Blaenavon Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Died on the 30th November from injuries received by a fall of roof at the face in Blaenavon (Forge Slope) Colliery on the 13th February, 1903. Death occurring more than a year and a day after the accident it is not comprised.

JONES William - 1903 - 18/06/1903 – Age 33 - Navigation Haulier, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was raking rubbish into an old road and must have been riding on the gun when he was caught by a low piece of roof and dragged back on top of the tram. He knew that the road was low and should not have attempted to ride along it.

JONES William - 1903 - 24/11/1903 – Age 22 - Tyllwyd Banksman, Tyllwyd Colliery Co., Carmarthen. While driving a small steam-crab his clothes got caught in the removing spindle end, he was fatally crushed.

JONES William - 1903 - 25/11/1903 – Age 35 - Galltyfedw, Slate Quarry Slate getter, Old Penybryn Slate Co., Carnarvon. In stepping off a stone, to a ledge, he missed his footing and fell 14 feet. Died shortly after.

JONES William - 1903 - 26/08/1903 – Age 25 - Chequerbent Collier, Hulton Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway of working place whilst removing debris from a shot on the floor, fall from two slips both known. Fireman ought to have directed a bar to be set. (Bad roof.)

JONES William - 1903 - 27/04/1903 – Age 56 - Merthyr Vale No.1 Hitcher, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was killed by a stone about four pounds weight falling off a tram of rubbish as it was being taken out of the cage at the surface.

JONES William - 1903 - 30/05?/1903 – Age 47 - Newton (Wood) Collier, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inquiry made and inquest attended. A drawer who had two scotches in a full tub, when letting it down a brow dipping one in six with a hemp rope fastened to a prop and twisted a couple of times around the hook of tub, somehow got the rope off the hook of the tub and the tub ran downbrow striking the deceased near top of a jig. It was advised at the inquiry that a safer system should be adopted for letting the full tubs down that road in future.

JONES William - 1903 - 31/03/1903 – Age 58 - Blaennant Labourer, Marquess of Bute, Glamorgan. Stated to have received internal strain while helping a haulier to lift a tram of coal on to the road. He walked home but died the next day.

JONES William - 1904 - 19/02/1904 – Age 23 - Diphwys Casson, Slate Slatemaker, GH Ellis, Merioneth. He bruised his leg and died on the 6th. April of diabetic coma, which his medical attendant said resulted from the accident.

JONES William - 1905 - 07/04/1905 – Age 33 - Cambrian No.3 Repairer, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. The road in a Barry face was being shifted, and it was necessary to remove a pair of timbers as the arms were in the way. As the roof was much broken by a fault deceased set two pairs of timber to support the collar, and was knocking out the arms when the place collapsed and about 50 tons of cliff fell. Two flats and the two pairs of timber, set by deceased, were crushed out. Coronation seam.

JONES William - 1905 - 11/07/1905 – Age 60 - National No.2 Master sinker, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported on by E Milner-Jones, FA Gray and JT Robson. 119 killed. 29, Aberllechau Road, Wattstown, (lodger). Married with grown up children, living at Abercynon.

JONES William - 1905 - 21/10/1905 – Age 54 - Graigh Fach Quarry Quarryman, William Jones, Carmarthen. Deceased who worked the Quarry himself, was engaged in blasting operations, and in some unexplained manner a charge of about 20 lbs. of gunpowder, which he had put into a crack, exploded before he left the spot, and he was instantaneously killed.

JONES William - 1905 - 24/11/1905 – Age 54 - Blaina Griffin No.2 Assistant timberman, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof while he and his comrade, who was injured, were engaged repairing. They do not appear to have set legs or props under the double timbers to make themselves secure, with result that the timbers were knocked out and the stone fell on them.

JONES William - 1905 - 30/03/1905 – Age 29 - Ferndale No.8 Assistant repairer, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was knocked down and run over by a journey of full trams. He should have known, from the direction in which the rope was travelling, that the journey was following in behind him.

JONES William - 1906 - 01/06/1906 – Age 37 - Court Herbert Collier, Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of gas, 5 killed.

JONES William - 1906 - 05/04/1906 – Age 55 - South Wales Cwmtillery Collier, Lancasters Steam Coal Collieries Ltd., Monmouth. While barring some coal down from the face, a further quantity came off, and catching him, caused injuries from which he died in about 12 hours. He seems to have had a sprag set against the piece which fell.

JONES William - 1906 - 15/03/1906 – Age 14 - Black Park Doorboy, Black Park Colliery Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. When in the act of unhooking the chain of the pony, from the first full tub, he appeared to have left it too late as he got his head fatally crushed against a standing tub in the shunt.

JONES William – 1906 – 20/02/1906 – Age 28 – Brinkinalt Hutcher, WY Craig and Sons, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. When in the act of pushing his tub along the level, a portion of top clod rolled upon him, from the side  above a wooden chock, upon him, at the junction of two roads, caused by a sudden weighting of the roof. He expired shortly after reaching the surface.

JONES William – 1906 – 21/11/1906 – Age 18 – Duffryn Dare Collier, Llwyndcoed Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face cliff, 9 feet by 15 inches by 2.5 feet thick, fell off the side of the rippings of a beading, off which he was turning a stall, as he was filling a tram. A shot had just before been fired in the coal, within 5 feet of the stone, and must have loosened it. Two-feet-nine seam. Died January 14th, 1906.
