ROBERTS Edwin - 1909 - 19/04/1909 – Age 45 - Oakeley Slate, Slate getter, Oakeley Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Merioneth. A slab of rock from the working face fell on to him. Killed instantaneously.

ROBERTS Elias - 1905 - 11/07/1905 – Age 25 - National No.2 Sinker, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported on by E Milner-Jones, FA Gray and JT Robson. 119 killed. Single, 4, Danygraig Terrace, Ynyshir, buried at Eglwysilan on Saturday.

ROBERTS Ellis - 1901 - 07/03/1901 – Age 29 - Ferndale No.1 Assistant repairer, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road (return in 4 feet seam) coal and rashes, 9 feet by 3 feet by 1.5 feet thick, where it was being re-opened and not retimbered. Width of road, 7 feet at bottom 3 feet at top; height 6.5 feet.

ROBERTS Ellis - 1909 - 05/10/1909 – Age 72 - Glynrhonwy, Slate Quarry Quarryman, Glynrhonwy Slate Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. He was found in a dying condition by the men going to their work in the morning. It is not known how he came by his injuries.

ROBERTS Ellis J. - 1904 - 22/07/1904 – Age 23 - South Dorothea Slate, Slate maker, Horace C Dawkins, Carnarvon. He struck his knee against some slates so slight was the injury that he continued working. He died of blood poisoning on the 5th August.

ROBERTS Frederick - 1906 - 20/04/1906 – Age 17 - Llanbradach No.1 Collier boy - Cardiff Steam Coal Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, cliff, 4.5 feet by 11 feet by 17 inches thick. It was quite unsupported. Nine feet seam.

ROBERTS Geoffrey 1907 16/05/1907 – Age 22 Cwmaman Roadsman Cwmaman Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan Fall of roof on road cliff, 9 feet by 3 feet by 9 inches thick fell from a diagonal slip on deceased while he was laying a parting. It was quite unsupported. Seven feet seam.

ROBERTS George – 1906 – 29/05/1906 – Age 30 – St. Hilda Hewer, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased was hewing during the night shift, next to the loose side in a lift in broken workings in the 4th East way of the Low Hutton seam, 4 feet 9 inches thick, when a blue metal stone, 5 feet long, parallel to the face, 2 feet 6 inches wide and 3 feet 6 inches thick, weighing about 3 tons, suddenly fell close to the face upon him, breaking the planks of two pair of gears set under it. It was relieved by a breaker next the face and at its end next to the loose side, and by a slip at the other end running parallel to the centre line of the place. Another hewer working with him raised the alarm, but it was two hours before the body was got clear. The deputy had been in the place at 8.30 pm. when the previous shift was in, and was in again from 1 am. to 1.20 am. or 1.5 hours before the accident when he set a single prop and a pair of gears, and left suitable timber lying loose. Deceased was rather uneasy about the roof on account of visible fractures and set a prop and plank next the face on the fast side after the deputy had left. The Local Inspectors reported, ‘In our opinion, it is purely accidental.'

ROBERTS Gwilym – 1902 – 03/09/1902 – Age 24 – McLaren Haulier, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp in the Yard Vein seam. Caused by working near to or in a large accumulation of gas. 16 killed.

ROBERTS Harry – 1908 – 03/02/1908 – Age 25 – Sacriston Stoneman, Charlaw and Sacriston Collieries Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. When he and others were ridding stone away, after firing shots in a top caunch, a frame of stone fell from a jack and killed him. The stone was 24 feet long, 5 feet broad, by 3 feet thick.

ROBERTS Henry – 1903 – 11/04/1903 – Age 20 – Sygun, Copper Mine Trammer, British Ore Concentration Syndicate Ltd., Carnarvon. As he was tramming a full waggon to the mill, he somehow fell and was caught by another waggon coming close behind him. This waggon was upset and its contents fell on to him. He died the following day.

ROBERTS Henry – 1904 – 18/02/1905 – Age 58 – Penyrorsedd, Slate Quarry Slate Getter, Penyrorsedd Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. He was struck by a piece of slate when it unexpectedly fell. He succumbed to his injuries on the 26th.

ROBERTS Hugh – 1902 – 04/04/1902 – Age 30 – Merthyr Vale No.1 Assistant repairer, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. A loaded tram, which had been standing at the top of a dip heading, started to run down as a horse was being attached to it. Deceased stood on one side but the end of the axle lacerated the calf of his leg. Traumatic delirium set in and he died of exhaustion on April 18th.

ROBERTS Hugh – 1904 – 07/12/1904 – Age 35 – New Tredegar Shackler, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. The first of a journey of eighteen full trams coming up an engine plane dip got off the rails and resulted in the breakage of the large link of the bridle or bull chain. The flying rope struck him and broke his leg badly causing great loss of blood from the effects of which he died on the 11th December. It also struck and injured the master haulier. Some of the means who had attended the St. John of Jeruselam's Ambulance Classes rendered first aid but without being able to stop the bleeding.

ROBERTS Hugh – 1908 – 09/10/1908 – Age 33 – Elliot Timberman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. In drawing out a pair of broken timber, with a Sylvester machine at the mouth of a stall road, several others (some of which had been put in recently to double those already there) fell with a quantity of roof. He hesitated about making his escape and unfortunately doubled back into danger instead of getting into to safety.

ROBERTS Hugh Parry – 1909 – 16/12/1909 – Age 45 – Penmachno Slate, Slate Getter, Penmachno Slate Slate Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. A charge of frozen gelignite, which he was ramming with a phosphor-bronze stemmer, exploded and inflicted injuries to which he succumbed on the 26th. He neglected to use the warming pan and wooden stemmer provided for him.

ROBERTS J. – 1900 – 05/01/1900 – Age 33 – Carlton Main Collier, Yorkshire and Derbyshire Coal and Iron Co., Yorkshire. Fall of side. Died 8th Jan.

ROBERTS J.J. – 1908 – 31/08/1908 – Age 36 – Penrorsedd, Slate Quarry Labourer, Penrorsedd Slate Quarry Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. While he was standing on the side of a waggon readjusting the block of an aerial ropeway, a stone thrown down by a man struck the rope, which gave a lurch and he fell 20 or 30 yards.

ROBERTS J.W. – 1902 – 09/07/1902 – Age 22 – Nunnery Screenman, Nunnery Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Foolishly to make a short cut he went past the elevator bunker. He stumbled as he was passing and fell into the bunker and was killed by the elevator buckets.

ROBERTS James – 1904 – 06/05/1904 – Age 32 – Bersham Fireman, Bersham Colliery Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased and three other firemen were getting out of the cage at a mouthing in the shaft when he appears to have slipped and stumbled on the rail backwards into the shaft and was killed.

ROBERTS James – 1906 – 28/04/1906 – Age 72 – Wingate Grange Shifter, Owners of Wingate Grange Colliery Ltd., Co.Durham. Hand slightly inbred on 6th March, 1902. Died 28th April, 1906.

ROBERTS JE – 1909 – 24/12/1909 – Age 32 – Ty Trist Labourer, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. A stone he was lifting fell on his foot. Blood poisoning supervened and he died on 26th June, 1910.

ROBERTS John – 1900 – 02/10/1900 – Age 24 – Westminster Sinker, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Four sinkers were descending the upcast shaft in a hoppit which was in the process of being deepened when suddenly at a point about thirty yards from the top the engineman, by some mistake, reversed the action and was winding the hoppit past the stage at the pit top slowly when the deceased in attempting to jump on to the stage fell down the shaft, a distance of three hundred and fifty yards and was killed. The engineman at the inquiry stated he lost his head and that he had been on duty thirteen hours. It was recommended for the Company to introduce safety hooks and adopt the eight-hour shift for the enginemen the same as the sinkers.

ROBERTS John – 1902 – 05/09/1902 – Age 28 – Cambrian No.2 Rider, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. The deceased were riding out on a journey of coal when the last tram but one knocked a collar out and caused two others to be discharged. The roof thus liberated buried them. The height under the collar was only 4 feet 11 inches. It was thought that an arm which was a good deal decayed broke and allowed the collar to drop. Red seam. 2 killed.

ROBERTS John – 1902 – 09/01/1902 – Age 54 – Merthyr Vale No.2 Fireman, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 1 foot by 6 inches by 3 inches thick, fell on his head while he was examining a fall that was being cleared. Nine feet seam.

ROBERTS John – 1904 – 20/11/1904 – Age 50 – Soothill Wood Boiler fireman, Soothill Wood Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Died from injuries received on October 8th. Deceased wanted an empty tub in the boiler fireholes to fill ashes into and shouted to the banksman for one. The banksman took off a fence and pushed the tub on to a heap and it rolled down and hit the deceased on the spine and seriously injured it. The tub should have been brought down by the proper way.

ROBERTS John – 1906 – 07/04/1906 – Age 60 – Parkhouse Miner, Joseph H Pearson, Staffordshire. Deceased was ridding stone from a shot in a drift in the Black Band Stone when a fall occurred from between two parallel slips up the face. Deceased was killed by the lower end of the fall. Before the shot was fired the pick was inside up to within two feet of the face, and it was only after the shot was fired that the second slip became exposed. After the occurrence there was a space of only four and a half feet between pack and face.

ROBERTS John - 1906 - 24/08/1906 – Age 21 - Wynnstay Loader, Wynnstay Collieries Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was pushing an empty tub along the level, when a portion of roof coal fell upon him from a slip. This portion of the road had only been propped on the side, and not barred.

ROBERTS John - 1906 - 26/04/1906 – Age 26 - Norwood Hewer, Dunston Garsfield Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased, and another hewer, were working together in the back shift in a lift loose at both sides in broken workings in the North flat of the Stone Coal Seam, 2 feet thick, when a stone about 5.5 feet square, 12 inches thick, next to the coal and tailing out behind to a feather edge suddenly fell on him, canting out two props in its fall. The deputy had been in the place about three hour before the accident when he set some props and left a good supply loose he was only 30 yards away when the stone fell, and helped to release deceased who was so badly injured that he died at the shaft The Local Inspectors reported, ‘Found everything in good order, and so far as can be seen attach no blame to anyone for the, accident, which has been purely accidental.’

ROBERTS John - 1906 - 29/05/1906 – Age 54 - Onllwyn Labourer, Sir Griffith Thomas, Glamorgan. While on the top of a waggon, which he was about to unload, he clipped and fell to the ground, causing such injuries to his spine that he died on June 3rd.

ROBERTS John - 1906 - 30/08/1906 – Age 34 - National Collier, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased and his butty were standing a pair of timbers, and when his butty handed him the end of the collar, he slipped and fractured his knee-cap. He was medically treated at the infirmary and afterwards at home. Three weeks before he died the knee gathered and general blood poisoning set in, from which he died on June 15th, 1907.

ROBERTS John - 1907 - 18/10/1907 – Age 50 - Wynnstay Waggon Loader, Wynnstay Collieries Co., Denbigh. When levering a waggon from under the screen an empty waggon came along behind, fatally crushing him. They had neglected putting the wooden scotches to prevent the waggon following and the brake had not been pinned down.

ROBERTS John - 1907 - 28/03/1907 – Age 22 - Black Park Collier, Black Park Colliery Co., Denbigh. When drawing a sprag set against the coal he got fatally crushed by the falling coal when attempting to reach the waste for safety.

ROBERTS John - 1908 - 14/02/1908 – Age 40 - Lea Green, Queen Tunneller, Sutton Heath and Lea Green Collieries Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. When driving a tunnel, near a fault, a stone broke away from the face of the tunnel, and fell upon him.

ROBERTS John - 1909 - 11/11/1909 – Age 47 - Moor No.5 Collier, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased appeared to have cut his hand and his knee on the sheet iron in the mine. He expired from the effects of blood poisoning, November 22, 1909.

ROBERTS John G. - 1902 - 02/04/1902 – Age 22 - Garswood Hall Sinker, Garswood Hall Collieries Co., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of firedamp in the sinking shaft at the Ravine seam which probably was ignited by a short circuit of the electric light cable. 9 killed.

ROBERTS John G. - 1902 - 02/04/1902 – Age 53 - Garswood Hall Sinker, Garswood Hall Collieries Co., Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of firedamp in the sinking shaft at the Ravine seam which probably was ignited by a short circuit of the electric light cable. 9 killed.

ROBERTS John H. - 1900 - 27/02/1900 – Age 19 - Westminster Collier, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was engaged holing the crank coal when a stone fell from the roof from a slip running with the face crushing the deceased and capping two props.

ROBERTS John R. - 1905 - 06/11/1905 – Age 24 - Llysfaen, Limestone Quarry Quarryman, Raynes and Co., Carnarvon. Killed by a stone which fell from the side of the Quarry.

ROBERTS Joseph - 1902 - 16/05/1902 – Age 20 - Elm No.1 Filler, George Watkinson and Sons, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. A portion of side, resting on a prop on side of main dip at the entrance to the drawing road, gave way capping the prop and fatally injuring deceased.

ROBERTS Joseph H - 1900 - 05/09/1900 – Age 19 - Flint Filler, New Flint Colliery Co. Ltd., Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. When in the act of filling a tub of coal, at the face, a fall of roof occurred from between slips. The roadway was propped at the sides but not barred.

ROBERTS Lister - 1908 - 21/01/1908 – Age 60 - Caphouse Cartman, Exors of E Lister-Lake Yorkshire. He had backed his cart into a coal shoot but it did not get far enough back, so he moved his horse forward, and he stooped to pick some pieces of coal from behind the wheel and whilst doing so the horse backed and caught the deceased's head between the boss of the cart wheel and a post supporting the shoot. Died 13th April.

ROBERTS Mark - 1905 - 24/05/1905 – Age 17 - Caerau Collier, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; clod, 6 feet x 1.5 feet x 9 inches thick, which was attempted to keep up by one sprag. Clod is usually taken down.

ROBERTS Maurice Robert - 1903 - 05/10/1903 – Age 39 - Rhiwarth, Slate Quarry Miner, WH Thomas, Montgomery. A block weighing about 2 tons fell onto him from above the entrance to a tunnel. Killed on the spot. The place had just been examined and considered to be safe.

ROBERTS Mesach - 1900 - 12/06/1900 – Age 40 - Plas Power Night overman, Broughton & Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was examining the roof with his walking stick in the main haulage road to see if it required barring when a slab of stone, four yards in length, fell upon him. This roadway was barred in the majority of places but at the point of the accident there was a space of forty feet not barred.

ROBERTS Owen - 1905 - 13/08/1905 – Age 22 - Rhosydd, Slate Mine Labourer, New Rhosydd Slate Co. Ltd., Merioneth. A bridge over which he was tramming a loaded truck broke and he fell to a depth of 14 yards. Killed on the spot.

ROBERTS Owen - 1906 - 03/01/1906 – Age 48 - Cambrian No.1 Ripper, Cambrian Collieries Co., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, cliff, 15 feet by 8 feet by 21 inches thick. Deceased was taking down a piece of low roof. He had knocked out two flats and was barring down the lower of two beds of stone, when both beds fell on him and his assistant. He had stood two props under the upper bed before he knocked out the flats but they were overbalanced. Coronation seam.

ROBERTS Owen - 1909 - 18/01/1909 – Age 55 - Eifl, Augite Porphyry Quarry Quarryman, Welsh Granite Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. A block of stone weighing 2 or 3 tons fell on to him. Killed on the spot.

ROBERTS Richard - 1903 - 30/06/1903 – Age 66 - Agecroft Collier, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway, nine yards from the face, he had lifted a tub on the rails when a great crump in the roof occurred, four bars displaced 4 feet apart. (Bad roof.) 2 killed.

ROBERTS Richard - 1904 - 29/10/1904 – Age 58 - Penrikyber Ripper, Penrikyber Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. On road. Deceased was removing three pairs of timber that had become too low forming a bridge there being higher timbers at each end. He put a prop under the outer collar and cut out one of the arms. He then stood under the middle pair and knocked the prop from under the outer collar. When the latter fell, the pair above him also came down and he was buried by the rubbish which had rested on the collars. A mechanical appliance should have been used for drawing the timbers out. Six feet seam.

ROBERTS Richard - 1904 - 30/06/1904 – Age 42 - Glebe Crutter, John Heath and Co. Ltd., Stafford. Explosion of a shot of bellite which had missed fire while the stemming was being drilled out. Died 2nd July.

ROBERTS Robert - 1900 - 14/06/1900 – Age 64 - Gatewen Fireman, Broughton & Plas Power Coal Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased had just coupled the cable to a charge of electro-nite and having requested his son, who was present to assist him and who through some misunderstanding turned the handle of the battery before his father had got away from the place of the shot causing him to be fatally injured.

ROBERTS Robert - 1903 - 04/02/1903 – Age 38 - Llechwedd Slate, Slate Getter, JW Greaves and Sons Ltd., Merioneth. About 3 cwt. of rock fell while he was securing the roof of a chamber. He died in a few minutes.

ROBERTS Robert - 1909 - 05/05/1909 – Age 15 - Rotherham Main Pony Driver, John Brown and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was found dead between the side and the first tub of a train he was taking along a level with a pony. It is probable that he had stumbled when passing in front of the train.

ROBERTS Thomas - 1901 - 14/08/1901 – Age 14 - Thrybergh Hall Coupler, J and J Charlesworth, Yorkshire. Head crushed between tubs.

ROBERTS Thomas - 1904 - 14/04/1904 – Age 62 - Lady Windsor Gogcutter, Ocean Coal Co. Glamorgan. On road cliff, 11 feet by 4 feet by 29 inches thick fell on deceased while he was engaged in sawing some old timber into cog-sticks. It was quite unsupported. Six feet seam.

ROBERTS Thomas - 1904 - 29/04/1904 – Age 50 - Broadfields Collier, Goldendale Iron Co., Stafford. Fall of roof (bass) on jig landing at longwall face in Bassey Mine. Deceased received a compound fracture of the left leg below, the knee, which was not properly treated and he died from blood poisoning on the 15th May.

ROBERTS Thomas - 1906 - 15/09/1906 – Age 36 - Mountain Hitcher, Mountain Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While steadying a bowk before its ascent, he was struck on the head by a small stone falling from a byat or upper landing.

ROBERTS Thomas - 1906 - 25/04/1906 – Age 16 - Oakeley, Slate Horse driver, Oakeley Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. While he was hooking waggons in motion his head was caught between them. Killed on the spot.

ROBERTS Thomas - 1907 - 15/02/1907 – Age 38 - International Collier, International Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. He hurt his knee at the colliery, and inflammation set in necessitating an operation in about a fortnight from the day of the accident. The knee was again opened on two occasions, but the case continued to give much trouble to the doctors. Ultimately the leg was amputated above the knee joint. He grew worse and finally died from hypostatic congestion of the lungs which the doctor in evidence at the inquest stated to be due to low condition of health brought about by the accident. Died 11th July.

ROBERTS W. – 1901 – 20/02/1901 – Age 34 – Strafford Collier, Strafford Colliery Co., Yorkshire. Fall of holed coal. Cause insufficient spragging and a weight break.

ROBERTS W.J. – 1906 – 05/03/1906 – Age 45 – Wynnstay Collier, Wynnstay Collieries Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. While he was engaged packing at the face, a fall of top coal occurred, capping two props and fatally injuring deceased. The props were set four feet apart.

ROBERTS William – 1901 – 08/01/1901 – Age 18 – Hafod Wagoner, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was riding on the iron shaft attached to the pony and tub when he fell backwards and was fatally crushed by the full tub. He died the following day.

ROBERTS William – 1901 – 14/01/1901 – Age 36 – Murton Fireman, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died while following his employment in the pit from heart disease.

ROBERTS William – 1903 – 16/03/1903 – Age 39 – Plas Power Night byman, Broughton and Plas Power Coal Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. They were repairing a downbrow when a large fall of roof occurred upon them capping some new bars which they had set. The props supporting the bars, on one side, were resting on the coal side which appears to have given way owing to a weight of roof on the bars. 2 killed.

ROBERTS William – 1906 – 02/07/1906 – Age 39 – Garnoch No.1 Mechanic, Glasbrook Bros. Ltd., Glamorgan. While walking up a main slant, in front of a loaded journey of 18 trams, the first shackle broke, and the first tram bounded forward 20  yards. knocking him down, and causing fatal injuries.

ROBERTS William – 1907 – 31/01/1907 – Age 38 – Penrhyn, Slate Quarry, Slate getter, Lord Penryn, Carnarvon. He was caught by a portion of a fall of rock. Killed no the spot.

ROBERTS William - 1909 - 08/02/1909 – Age 44 - Netherseal Stallman, Netherseal Colliery Co. Ltd., Warwickshire. The three men working in the stall were taking a rest when a fall occurred from a bear or blister, and killed the deceased. His son was injured.

ROBERTS William H. - 1909 - 30/11/1909 – Age 14 - Brynkinalt Clipper on WY, Craig and Sons, Denbigh. Through one of the clips, attaching the tubs to the endless rope getting somehow loose, in a brow rising 1 in 5, it caused the full tub to run back, which fatally crushed deceased before he could reach the refuge hole.

ROBERTS William Henry - 1901 - 28/02/1901 – Age 23 - Slope Mason, Blaendare Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp at a naked light. They were engaged walling a staple pit from the new vein to the lower seams and had got to within about four yards from the top. Gas accumulated under the scaffolding owing to no provision having been made for ventilation causing ignited at the naked lights which they were using. 2 killed.

ROBERTS William R. - 1908 - 08/01/1908 – Age 41 - Alexandra, Slate Quarry Labourer, Alexandra Slate Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. He neglected to secure himself using a rope while working on a narrow ledge though ordered to do so. He fell over and was killed.

ROBERTS William T. - 1909 - 11/12/1909 – Age 28 - Bettisfield Bricklayer, Bagillt Coal Co., Flint. Through the jig rope chain getting somehow unhooked from the empty tubs at the bottom of the self-acting jig when starting jigging, it caused the full journey of tubs to run into the main haulage level, striking the endless rope running at right angles, and the jerking of the endless rope fatally injured the two deceased persons, in the main haulage level. 2 killed.

ROBERTSHAW J. - 1906 - 01/05/1906 – Age 23 - Brandon Hewer, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. He was killed by a fall of stone which came away from ‘breakers’ in the roof.

ROBERTSON David - 1903 - 21/02/1903 – Age 49 - Redding Waggon shifter, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was attempting to move a loaded waggon, with his brake stick placed at the back end of the wheel and resting on the rail, when the stick slipped and he fell forward on his face. It is supposed his face struck the axle box of the waggon.

ROBERTSON David jnr. - 1909 - 04/06/1909 – Age 23 - Chapel Machineman, Chapel Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased set some props to the roof after the coal cutter had passed and shortly after the part fell upon him carrying the props with it.

ROBERTSON Frank - 1906 - 11/08/1906 – Age 27 - Wemyss Colliery Railway Hutch minder, Wemyss Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. While proceeding along the railway, to his home in a state of intoxication, he was run over by a train of waggons.

ROBERTSON Henry - 1909 - 15/11/1909 – Age 30 - Battery, Whinstone Quarry Driller, Alex Brunton and Son, Fife. Deceased and others were examining a whinstone block under the empty jib of a steam crane, when it suddenly came down on them, injuring deceased so badly that he succumbed a few hours later. Another man was also injured. The pawl teeth were found to have fractured, but no flaw was seen in the metal. It was thought that the pawl finger had not been properly down and had slipped then caught again, so causing the fracture.

ROBERTSON James - 1905 - 16/10/1905 – Age 20 - Loanhead Miner, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was taking coal off the steep workings and when it fell he was unable to clear himself and was crushed. He died from his injuries 17 days afterwards.

ROBERTSON John - 1902 - 14/02/1902 – Age 56 - Balmossie, Whinstone Quarry Quarrier, Commissioners of Burgh of Broughty Ferry, Forfar. Fourteen holes were bored in a whinstone Quarry, eight horizontal and six vertical on the top of the latter from 10 feet to 16 feet deep. All were to be charged with Kynoch gelignite and fired by electricity. At the time of the accident the horizontal holes were charged and the wires were fixed to the detonators together with two of the top holes and while the third vertical hole was being charged an explosion occurred. The tool being used to press home the charges after they had been dropped into the hole was a wooden rod. The cartridges being inserted into the hole were in a frozen condition. 2 killed.

ROBERTSON John - 1907 - 12/04/1907 – Age 31 - Houldsworth Loco. Guard, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. When pinching forward waggons others moved forward behind and crushed him.

ROBERTSON John - 1908 - 23/03/1908 – Age 19 - Loanhead Miner, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased worked in a bench off the carriage way, and he and a loaded tub fell to the bottom, a distance of 130 feet The inclination of the seam is 64 degrees and the tubs are run to and from the various benches by means of a carriage and back balance. He is supposed to have been at the side of the carriage way and the tub moved forward on him, and he was crushed and afterwards pushed over the bench.

ROBERTSON Joseph - 1904 - 26/02/1904 – Age 28 - Craighead No.1 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place. Apparently it had not been propped as required by the regulations.

ROBERTSON Lizzie - 1909 - 22/12/1909 – Age 18 - Dumbreck No.2 Dirt Picker, William Baird and Co., Stirling. Her clothing got entangled with counter shaft of screen. Female.

ROBERTSON Matthew - 1904 - 21/06/1904 – Age 30 - Polquhairn Bencher, Polquhairn Coal Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Crushed against a prop by hutches on a dook.

ROBERTSON William - 1907 - 08/07/1907 – Age 35 - Bellfield Miner, William Barr and Sons, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face in machine stall.

ROBERTSON William - 1907 - 14/06/1907 – Age 45 - Hopetoun Oil Shale Miner, Youngs Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased and another miner were engaged withdrawing the props where a stoop had been extracted and were just retiring when the roof fell, and deceased was crushed beneath the debris.

ROBERTSON William - 1908 - 23/01/1908 – Age 63 - Kemnay Granite Quarry Labourer, John Fife Ltd., Aberdeen. Deceased was pushing a loaded bogie with two other men, when a bogie being pushed behind overtook them and he was slightly injured and subsequently died.

ROBINSON Albert - 1909 - 20/08/1909 – Age 37 - Creswell Stallman, Bolsover Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased was taking a prop from a waste when a fall of roof occurred and killed him. He was not using a ringer and chain.

ROBINSON Alfred - 1905 - 6/12/1905 – Age 53 - Skelton Park Ironstone Miner, Bell Bros. Ltd., North Yorkshire. Fall of roof. Deceased had finished his own shift and had gone into another place to help his son to fill his last two tubs. The roof weighted suddenly and some dogger fell on him.

ROBINSON Arthur - 1909 - 22/02/1909 – Age 22 - Burnmoor Timberer, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was preparing to set a prop when a stone 7 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 12 inches thick, fell from a slip and killed him.

ROBINSON David - 1900 - 16/08/1900 – Age 63 - Coneygre Stallman, Earl of Dudley, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in a thick coal stall.

ROBINSON David Joseph - 1905 - 26/11/1905 – Age 30 - North Seaton Timberer, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed.

ROBINSON Francis - 1903 - 04/06/1903 – Age 46 - Hamsterley Labourer, Hamsterley Colliery Ltd., Co.Durham. Committed suicide by placing his head on rail and allowing trucks to run over it.

ROBINSON Frederick - 1909 - 20/07/1909 – Age 37 - Cramlington Fitter, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Shaft accident. 4 killed.

ROBINSON G. - 1900 - 01/08/1900 - Middle Lane Clay Quarry, Clay getter, Clayton Brick and Stone Co., Yorkshire. Fall of ground from a place beyond his control.

ROBINSON George - 1901 - 04/03/1901 – Age 22 - Newfield Loco. Fireman, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. A locomotive was pushing six trucks round a curve and he was sitting on the buffer of the first one which ran off the rails and he fell off in front and was killed.

ROBINSON George - 1902 - 20/06/1902 – Age 39 - Carricks Iron Ore, Iron Ore Miner, Weardale Steel Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. A lump of ore fell out of the roof and caught and killed him.

ROBINSON George - 1903 - 23/03/1903 – Age 39 - Great Rocks, Limestone Quarry Quarryman, Buxton Lime Firms Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was pulling stone at the foot of a face when another stone broke out 25 feet above him and fell on deceased as he was attempting to reach a place of safety.

ROBINSON George - 1905 - 12/09/1905 – Age 32 - Hoyland Silkstone Hanger-on, Hoyland Silkstone Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He and his mate had loaded the bottom deck of the cage when 14 full tubs followed down to the shaft and crushed him against an air pipe. It was the duty of the deceased and the man working along with him to put lockers in the wheels of the tubs to prevent them running down this way, but they neglected to do so. The gradient in favour of the full tubs is very slight and they had evidently thought they would stand without lockers. Died October 21st.

ROBINSON George - 1907 - 05/07/1907 – Age 45 - Grinkle Runrider, Grinkle Park Mining Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. He was riding on the back end of a set when the front waggon got off the way, and running into the side of a refuge hole, he was jerked off the set and killed.

ROBINSON George - 1907 - 09/10/1907 – Age 31 - Leasingthorne Labourer, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was caught between a tub, laden with stones, and a girder and killed.

ROBINSON Harris - 1904 - 29/08/1904 – Age 64 - Allhallows Deputy, Allerdale Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. While deceased was walking down a slightly dipping road and when opposite the horizontal return wheel, of an endless rope haulage placed about 18 inches above the pavement he slipped on one of the rails or on a wet sleeper and fell on his back and his feet flew up, and although the top and side of the wheel was well fenced one of his feet went under the fence and was caught between the rope and wheel and cut off.

ROBINSON Herbert - 1909 - 10/08/1909 – Age 42 - Silkstone Fall Miner, Old Silkstone Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He was found dead under a heavy fall of loose shale in a gate road. From the position of his candle and tools it is conjectured that he found it small fall and was either removing it or examining the place when a further fall occurred. The roof was very soft and loose and the fall displaced timber.

ROBINSON James - 1901 - 24/12/1901 – Age 36 - Coneygre, Bel End Loader, Earl of Dudley, Staffordshire. While taking an empty tub along the dipping road and going in front of the tub he struck his head against a bar and fell down and was crushed by the tub. Died 26th December.

ROBINSON John - 1909 - 16/02/1909 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed.

ROBINSON John - 1901 - 08/08/1901 – Age 15 - Newfield Landing Lad, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Killed by his head being crushed between the top of a tub and a baulk.

ROBINSON John - 1902 - 07/07/1902 – Age 37 - Whitburn Hewer, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. While hewing at the face of a board in the Bensham Seam a stone fell from the roof canting out some timber. A hitch crossed the place at an angle and may have weakened the stone.

ROBINSON John - 1905 - 07/07/1905 – Age 48 - Renishaw Park No.3 Dayman, J and G Wells Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased and a stallman were ripping the gate end by wedging, when a piece of the roof fell and fatally injured the deceased. He died the same day.

ROBINSON John Forest – 1901 – 15/07/1901 – Age 27 – Cowpen, Isabella Coal filler, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was cleaning up the last of his coals when a large stone fell from slips in the roof. There was one prop under the stone and probably the deceased was about to set more timber.

ROBINSON John James – 1908 – 18/08/1908 – Age 50 – Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

ROBINSON John Robert – 1907 – 30/10/1907 – Age 35 – Woodfield Hewer, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was levering a piece of stone down, with a 4 feet plate, when the stone fell suddenly, and either it or the plate struck his chest. He died on 5th June, 1908, from a clot of blood in the windpipe.

ROBINSON Joseph – 1908 – 06/01/1908 – Age 39 – Threlkled, Lead Miner, Threlkled Mines Ltd., Cumberland. Fall of hanging side in a vein, 6 feet wide, and partly timbered.

ROBINSON L. – 1903 – 07/02/1903 – Age 53 – Victoria Collier, James Swift, Yorkshire. Heavy fall of roof in a working place. A bar and three props were knocked out. Cause converging slips.

ROBINSON Nicholson Johnson – 1908 – 07/01/1908 – Age 18 – Handen Hall Driver, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Kicked by pony.

ROBINSON Ozias – 1908 – 18/08/1908 – Age 40 – Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

ROBINSON Samuel – 1901 – 16/03/1901 – Age 25 – Cannock & Rugeley Brakeman, Cannock & Rugeley Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. In a moment of forgetfulness he stepped in front of a locomotive during shunting operations.

ROBINSON Samuel – 1902 – 17/10/1902 – Age 24 – Gatewen Collier, Broughton and Plaspower Coal Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attend. He was engaged filling a tub of coal in the face of a roadway when a stone fell upon him from the roof from between slips. The roadway was propped on each side, but not barred. The fireman, who examined the roof one hour previously, stated he thought the roof was strong and safe.

ROBINSON Samuel - 1907 - 11/01/1907 – Age 42 - Whitwood Silkstone Labourer, Henry Briggs Son and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. A railway was being diverted in order to straighten a curve and a new drain was being dug to take the place of an old one. A travelling steam cane with a grab was being used to lift the soil and clay out of the new drain and to put into wagons on the same road as the crane was standing. At this point there was curve and a gradient of 1 in 40 and outer rail was two inches higher than the inner one. A wagon and a half of soil had been lifted safely, but when some more was being lifted and the jib swung round to nearly parallel with the wagon the crane fell over and the jib and grab fell upon the deceased who was in the trench and fatally injured him. The crane was fitted with clamps to fasten on to the rails but they were not used.

ROBINSON T. - 1900 - 23/01/1900 – Age 15 - Dowlais Cardiff Engine driver, Dowlais Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Knocked down by two trams laden with rubbish which were being run from one side of the shaft to the other.

ROBINSON Thomas - 1908 - 07/07/1908 – Age 34 - Burnmoor Bottom cleaner, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He was taking up bottom in a road when a stone fell from a slip on the left side of the place and a joint on the right side, and swinging out the timber, killed him. The timber had been set on the edge of the cut, and the fill had thrust it out, not broken it.

ROBINSON Thomas H. - 1908 - 07/01/1908 – Age 30 - Littleton Stallman, Littleton Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased and some others were setting jig posts at the face of a long wall working, 7 feet 6 inches in height, and having an inclination of 1 in 3, when a rate of coal, 19 feet in length by 1 to 1.5 feet in thickness, suddenly fell from the face and fractured the base of his skull. There was only one spur set to support the coal and this was reeled out. The accident might have been prevented had sufficient timber been properly set at the proper time.

ROBINSON Thomas James - 1907 - 24/05/1907 – Age 47 - Cramlington Loco. Cleaner, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Died May 26. On a pay Friday night, the boilers of several locomotives were to be washed out and plugs were in the course of removal. A plug at the firebox end of BO 3 locomotive was stiff and deceased and another man were applying a key to loosen it. The key was in two parts, a key proper about 2 feet long with a square hole at the end to fit into this plug and a hole at the other end into which a wrench or steel bar, also about 2 feet long, was fitted at right angles. Deceased held this key proper against the plug and the other man first raised the wrench and then pressed it steadily down when the key slipped off the plug and caught the deceased in the stomach. He complained of pain but continued at work for some time but eventually went home. He became worse and after being seen by a doctor was sent to Newcastle Infirmary in an ambulance waggon arriving about 4 am. on the Saturday. He was operated on this Saturday afternoon but he became very ill and died on Sunday. The doctor at the inquest stated death was due to acute peritonitis set up by a rupture of the bowel.

ROBINSON W. - 1903 - 13/07/1903 – Age 22 - Ingrham’s Thornhill Collier, Ingrham’s Thornhill Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. Died 15th July. Fall of roof in a working place. Cause a slip and neglect to set timber.

ROBINSON William - 1901 - 30/08/1901 – Age 32 - Cambois Hewer, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Inquest attended. While hewing in a broken working a stone fell away from two slips knocking out a prop which had been set to support the stone.

ROBINSON William Elkin - 1908 - 09/05/1908 – Age 36 - West Shield Row Hewer, South Derwent Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Hand injured by fall of stone at working face and died under chloroform while it was being operated on.

ROBLEY Thomas - 1908 - 23/08/1908 – Age 70 - St Helens Hewer, St Helens Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Loose coal rolling injured his fingers; blood poisoning supervened. Died 7th July, 1909.

ROBSON Archibald - 1907 - 19/03/1907 – Age 55 - Benwell Deputy, W Cochrane Carr Ltd., Northumberland. Explosion of firedamp. 4 killed.

ROBSON David - 1901 - 13/03/1901 – Age 52 - West Auckland Stoneman, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He and the man working with him were lengthening an incline and a tub was chocked up in the face. He was going down the incline when a piece of stone fell and knocked the chock out and the tub ran amain and caught and killed him.

ROBSON George - 1900 - 02/01/1900 – Age 36 - Washington Hewer, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. The deceased was working at the coal face when a stone fell away at a slip causing injuries from which he died on 5th January.

ROBSON Henry - 1901 - 24/02/1901 – Age 49 - New Brancepeth Shifter, Cochrane and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He and a night shift deputy were making height and timbering at a small hitch. When taking some stone down a piece fell on his head and knocked him down on to his lamp, the ring of which he had in his mouth. Died 27th.

ROBSON James - 1902 - 13/06/1902 – Age 24 - Ashington Hewer, Ashington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Deceased worked in a narrow place, 7 feet wide in the High Main seam, and a stone 24 feet long by 2 feet wide, relieved by a jack and slips fell from the roof close to the face upon him.

ROBSON James - 1902 - 29/08/1902 - Foxholes, Chalk Quarry Driffield, Rural District Council, Yorkshire. Fell from a ledge through being startled by a fall of chalk below him.

ROBSON James - 1903 - 17/02/1903 – Age 14 - Backworth Compressor man, Owners of Backworth Collieries, Northumberland. Died February 24. Deceased, who was the son of the foreman enginewright of the colliery, attended to the steam throttle valve of an air compressing plant. He was stepping across the space between one of the steam and air cylinders while the engines were running when his foot was jammed between a sleeve connecting the piston of the steam cylinder to the piston of the air cylinder and a projecting screwed bolt on the steam cylinder. He developed lock-jaw and was removed to Newcastle Infirmary where he died. The particular point where he crossed was not fenced as it was so far above the floor level.

ROBSON James - 1905 - 29/05/1905 – Age 14 - Montagu Fireclay Landing lad, Walter Scott Ltd., Northumberland. Deceased's duty was to couple the tubs at a landing at the inbye end of a main and tail rope haulage road. He had come to the pit without his bait and was going outbye to get it when a set of 22 full tubs started against the regulations, he was riding on the rope behind the last tub and was told to get off by the landing keeper, who was at the rapper at the outbye end of the landing, he got off and directly afterwards, on a part of the road rising outbye, one of the links of the loose coupling between the first and second tubs broke and 21 tubs began to run back; the road was very low and he was unable to get clear and was forced back, a refuge hole was not provided within the prescribed distance, although had there been one it is doubtful if it would have saved him. The coupling was made up of two end links of three eighths-inch and smaller intermediate links of iron. It was one of the small links that gave way and it was found in two parts. The iron seemed good. The smaller links are cut off a chain as required, the large links being fitted on to them at the colliery. The smaller links stand a test of 4 tons 12 cwts. 2 qrs. and the manager estimated the strain they would be subject to at the time of the accident as 3,000 lbs. The Local Inspector examined the locus but made no report.

ROBSON James - 1908 - 03/07/1908 – Age 24 - Pilkington Quarry Quarrier, Finch Webster and Co., Lancashire. Fall of ground from feighing, overhanging, and undermined. Ought to have been either spragged or worked down from the top.

ROBSON John - 1900 - 08/12/1900 – Age 26 - Backworth, Algeron Hewer, Owners of Backworth Collieries, Northumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased had charged a shot hole in the coal with ordinary gunpowder and stemmed it after which the deputy gave him a piece of touch paper lighted by means of a heated wire. The deputy then left the deceased who was found lying 8 feet from the shot hole and had been killed by the coals projected by the shot. Probably he had nipped off the end of the squib too close. The deceased should have fired the shot himself.

ROBSON John - 1904 - 30/09/1904 – Age 45 - Quarter No.7 Miner, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. When drawing props at the stoops the roof gave way and caught him.

ROBSON John - 1906 - 14/03/1906 – Age 55 - Seaton Delaval Hewer, Seaton Delaval Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Died July 13. Deceased was cut about the head and had one of his thumbs so injured as to necessitate amputation, by a fall of stone in the Relief pit on the 14th March, and he was off work 14 weeks in consequence. On the 13th July he was found in his working place, in the Forster pit very ill, and soon became unconscious and remained so until he died at his home a few hours later. There was no suggestion of any second accident said at the inquest held after a post-mortem examination, medical evidence was given that death was due to apoplexy and was not due to any accident, and so the Jury found.

ROBSON John - 1906 - 19/04/1906 – Age 34 - Barrington Sinker, Bedlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. A pit, 8 feet in diameter and 92.5 fathoms to the Low Main seam, was being deepened, with a diameter of 12 feet, to prove the lower seams and had reached a depth of 6 fathoms below the Low Main seam. Electric light was provided in the bottom. Phoenix gelignite was the explosive used with No.7 low tension detonators, which it was stated were tested before use. The shots were fired in series by a low tension Julius Smith Igniting Dynamo, made by Davis, of Derby. At 2.40 pm. on the day of the accident a round of 9 shots, the holes being from 8 feet to 4 feet deep and charged with from 2 to 5 pellets of the explosive with a primer containing the detonator on top, was fired and while the succeeding shift of 7 sinkers, including a chargeman were engaged in the bottom shortly after 6 pm., an explosion of derelict gelignite took place, killing deceased, seriously injuring two of the others and slightly injuring the remainder. The chargeman who fired the round at 2.50 pm. examined the shaft bottom directly afterwards and was satisfied all the shots had exploded. Near where deceased was working, holding a poirit, struck by one of the sinkers who was seriously injured, was the socket of an old hole. Whether some explosive had not been detonated and left in this socket or whether one of the round of holes fired at 2.50 pm. had in some way failed to explode could not be determined. The explosive was said to be in a soft condition and the temperature of the water in the pit bottom was 62’ F.

ROBSON John - 1909 - 16/02/1909 – Age 54 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 3 Manx St.

ROBSON John - 1909 - 21/05/1909 - Age 61 - Beamish Hewer, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of roof stone at longwall face.

ROBSON Joseph - 1906 - 08/10/1906 – Age 55 - Blaydon Burn Shifter, Priestman Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased was sitting in a cabin at the entrance to the Mary drift, resting before he went inbye to work, when he suddenly fell over and became unconscious and died. He had had an accident in the adjoining Clara Vale Colliery some years ago and was an ailing man. There was no suggestion of any accident at the time of his death, and no inquest was held.

ROBSON Margaret - 1902 - 04/10/1902 – Age 4 - Montagu Fireclay Child, Walter Scott Ltd., Northumberland. Some children are supposed to have been playing with fire at the brick kilns near the colliery and deceased clothing was set on fire. Female.

ROBSON Newark - 1906 - 19/06/1906 – Age 41 - Elemore Deputy, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. When drawing a jud a stone fell off at a hitch leader and killed him. The stone knocked out three pairs of gears, besides the pair he was drawing. He was using the timberdrawing appliance provided.

ROBSON Robert - 1904 - 02/05/1904 – Age 14 - Usworth Driver, Johnasson Gordon and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased was employed as a driver bringing tubs in sets of three to an engine landing. The last 60 yards the road just before turning at right angles into the landing dipped outbye 3 inches per yard. When the drivers, coming outbye, arrived at the beginning of this dipping road they got off the limbers, on which they usually rode, and at a point called the drag hole put an iron drag into one of the wheels of each tub and then either got on the limbers again or walked behind their set into the landing. Deceased left the flat all right sitting on the limbers and carrying his lighted safety lamp but on arriving at the drag hole where the three drags lay ready for use was unable to stop his pony and the load getting on the steeper gradient overpowered it and forced it against a brick wall at the turn and deceased was crushed under the tubs which were overturned. The Local Inspectors reported "far as we can see it was purely accidental."

ROBSON Robert - 1905 - 18/11/1905 – Age 64 - Pelaw, Clay & Shale Quarry Shot firer, Standard Brick Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. The regular shot firer was off work and deceased, who was employed at the Quarry as a general hand and who had been a deputy and shot firer in North Elswick colliery had taken his place. Both surface clay and shale intermixed with sandstone beds and a little inferior coal is worked in the Quarry. A vertical hole in the shale, 5 feet 3 inches deep and 2 inches diameter had been drilled, and deceased went to the store on the margin of the Quarry for the explosive. He brought away 13 feet of fuse, a detonator, and probably about 1.25 lbs. of Kynoch's Gelignite A F. He went into a shed used for drying bricks under which were flues heated by fires using the inferior coal from the Quarry; these flues were covered by cast iron plates about ½ inch thick and on them was usually a few inches of clay debris, and it is probable that he placed the gelignite on these plates in order to thaw it, as the weather was cold and it was probably hard. It exploded, two of the cast iron plates were fractured and deceased’s right hand was blown off, his left arm splintered below the elbow, the top of his right foot blown off and both legs injured, and the clothing blown off the front of his body. When I visited the Quarry on the 20th November I found the gelignite in the store but no proper warming pan was provided; it had been the custom of the regular shot firer to thaw the gelignite by placing it in a pail of warm water.
