PRESCOT Peter (injured) - 1884 - 11/01/1884 – Age 22 - Bank rider. Crombuke, Fletcher Burrows and Co., Lancashire. Crushed in starting his train of tubs.

PRESCOTT James - 1885 - 25/05/1885 – Age 49 – Dataller. Bedford, John Speakman, Lancashire. Fatal. While descending the shaft with several others the cage stuck against the landing at a mouthing where there is a pumping engine and threw him out. There were two wire rope guides clamped at the head gear weighted in the sump hole which upon examination were found hanging free and resting on dirt and in working order. There was 15 inches clearance between the cage and the landing from the evidence the cage was descending steadily and so far no cause been assigned for the cage striking. A pair of fend off ropes have since been fixed in order to prevent the recurrence of such an accident.

PRESCOTT Richard - 1883 - 28/07/1883 – Age 33 – Drawer. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co. Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was asked by a pony driver to move some dirt which had fallen on the road, and he appeared to have been trying to get some of the top coal down with a crowbar when it suddenly fell on him. The deceased ought not to have interfered with the roof, but should have sent for the fireman if it was bad.

PREST Christopher - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 35 – Deputy. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion of gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery. Left a wife and 3 children.

PRESTON H. - 1889 - 23/10/1889 – Age 16 – Driver. Soothill Wood, Soothill Wood Coal Co., Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Injured by corfe.

PRESTON James - 1883 - 05/02/1883 – Age 44 – Banker. Hodbarrow (metalliferous), Hodbarrow Mining Co., Cumberland. Fell down shaft from surface.

PRESTON John - 1882 - 20/12/1882 – Age 39 – Hewer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Injury to head by fall of coal. Erysipelas supervened, from which he died on the 5th January 1883.

PRESTON John - 1883 - 05/01/1883 – Age 39 – Hewer. Ryhope, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co. Durham. Injury to head by fall of coal erysipelas supervened from which he died 20th. Dec. - 1882.

PRETTY Thomas - 1888 - 25/04/1888 – Age 30 – Waggonwayman. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. While jumping on a set of tubs in motion on an incline he fell and fractured his skull.

PRICE Alfred - 1883 - 30/06/1883 – Age 22 – Engine Plane Man. Hemsworth, Hemsworth Coal Co., Pontefract, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves.

PRICE Ben - 1887 - 04/07/1887 – Age 78 – Roadsman. Vochriw, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Slipped in front of a loaded tram while trying to stop the horse which was drawing it the haulier being behind.

PRICE Benjamin - 1880 - 18/04/1880 – Age 15 – Collier. No4 Sirhowy, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Sirhowy, Monmouth. Fall of coal.

PRICE David - 1886 - 10/12/1886 - 28 – Haulier. Lower Duffryn, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Trams running wild, 200 or 300 yards down engine plane, overtook him and others who were on their way to the shaft. The shackler having omitted to place his stop block across the rails below the landing and when bringing trams into place for next journey failed to scotch then.

PRICE David - 1888 - 30/06/1888 – Age 33 – Rider. Penrikyber, Penrikyber Navigation Steam Coal Co., Penrikyber, Glamorgan. Run over by journey on engine plane. He was riding up a portion of the deep where he was not required. Road 9ft. wide 6ft. high. Rock roof, not timbered.

PRICE E - 1883 - 25/06/1883 – Age 24 – Collier. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Co., Glamorganshire. Explosion of firedamp. 6 killed. Died 21st. July.

PRICE Edward - 1883 - 25/06/1883 – Age 24 – Collier. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Company, Rhymney, Glamorganshire. Explosion of gas 7 killed.

PRICE Edward - 1884 - 08/06/1884 – Age 6 – Child. Royal, Victoria Coal and Fireclay Co., St. Helens, Lancashire The two deceased with other children were playing about the top of a small pit which was covered with planks when by some means unexplained the planks were removed and the lads fell down. 2 killed.

PRICE Eli - 1883 - 16/01/1883 – Age 34 – Pikeman. Warrens Hall, Earl of Dudley, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Rate of coal from side when carelessly holing after sprag had been withdrawn. Injured Dec. 6th. 1882.

PRICE Evan - 1887 - 26/02/1887 - Age 68 – Wasteman. Merthyr Vale, Nixons Navigation Coal Co. Ltd., Merthyr, Glamorgan. While clearing a place for an airway through the gob a flat stone fell upon him from the roof.

PRICE Francis - 1882 - 15/06/1882 – Age 38 – Stoneman. East Hollywell, East Hollywell Coal Co., Northumberland. Fall of stone.

PRICE G.W. (injured) - 1884 - 07/03/1884 – Age 25 – Rockman. Votty & Boydd (slate). He was climbing up the face of his bargain by a chain suspended from an iron peg, when the peg came out and he fell injuring his head and arms. 14 weeks off.

PRICE George - 1882 - 02/06/1882 – Age 39 – Pikeman. Saltwells, Earl of Dudley, Dudley, Worcester. When holing off side of road, to widen it, a huge mass of coal slid from the side and pushing out the sprags, killed him.

PRICE Henry - 1882 - 12/02/1882 – Age 38 - Stone getter. Barrow-on-Scar (metalliferous), John Ellis and Son, Leicester. Fall of roof.

PRICE J. - 1881 - 14/06/1881 – Age 34 – Sinker. Pochin, Tredegar Iron Co., Monmouth. Fell out of bowk when about 40 yards from the bottom. He was alone in the bowk, and there was nothing to show what caused him to fall out.

PRICE J. - 1883 - 13/03/1883 – Age 39 – Collier. Glynnantddu, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouthshire. He was reaching into a water tank at the bottom of the pit when a piece of coal fell down the shaft and struck him on the head. He was not thought to be seriously injured at the time but died on 5th. Apr.

PRICE J.E. - 1882 - 12/01/1882 – Age 22 – Loader. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from side of a gate road. The roadway was being made wider when a very loud bump forced the coal down, and buried the two men. 2 killed.

PRICE James - 1889 - 16/09/1889 – Age 38 – Collier. Naval, Naval Colliery Co. Ltd., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Fall of face, slip of coal 16ft. long 4.5ft. thick while holing below it without sprags. 4 ft. seam. 6.5ft. thick, 2ft. of which is kept up as roof. Long wall.

PRICE John (injured) - 1889 - 02/02/1889 – Age 45 – Carpenter. Nant-y-garw (metalliferous). Blow from a rope while guiding it on the winding drum owing to the cage slipping after it had jammed in the shaft. 3 months off.

PRICE John - 1883 - 17/09/1883 – Age 22 – Driver. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierly Hill, Staffordshire. Smothered by a fall of slack in a main gate road caused by timber falling out.

PRICE John - 1884 - 03/09/1884 – Age 57 – Repairer. National, National Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Cymmer, Glamorgan. Fall of stone.

PRICE John - 1884 - 05/01/1884 – Age 13 – Collier. Lower-Level, Rhymney Iron Co., Monmouth. When running along a heading with a pick in his hand he lost his light and stumbled and the point of the pick punctured his bowels. He died on the 14th from the injury.

PRICE John - 1884 - 27/01/1884 – Age 43 – Fireman. Naval, Naval Steam Coal Co., Penygraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed.

PRICE John - 1885 - 31/07/1885 – Age 25 – Collier. Bedwellty, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Injured by a fall of clod and died next day. The clod was overhanging about 18 inches and this should have been pulled down before he attempted to go on working.

PRICE John - 1886 - 06/09/1886 – Age 41 – Collier. Bwllfa, Trustees of Merthyr Dare and Bwllfa Colliery, Bwllfa Dare, Glamorgan. Back injured by fall of coal in the 9-feet seam, died 9th.

PRICE John - 1889 - 13/12/1889 – Age 21 – Dataler. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Withdrawing back timber from a waste he neglected to use a ringer and chain in accordance with the special rules.

PRICE Joseph - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 29 – Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

PRICE Lewis - 1880 - 15/07/1880 – Age 15 – Collier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp 120 killed.

PRICE Llewelyn - 1888 - 24/04/1888 – Age 28 – Collier. Padeswood, Padeswood United Cannel Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had been working out an old pillar which was much crushed and was going to get down some of the tops from an old road running alongside when some of the tops fell out from between the props on to him and before he could be rescued another fall came upon him and he was suffocated. Considering the crushed state of the roof, bars should have been used.

PRICE Morgan - 1888 - 27/10/1888 – Age 23 - Asst. rider. Clydach Vale, Thomas Riches and Co., Rhondda, Glamorgan. Fell in front of, and was run over by an empty journey as it was entering a double parting. He had been in front looking if points were right.

PRICE Richard - 1888 - 28/05/1888 – Age 39 – Collier. Bersham, Bersham Colliery Co. Ltd., Wrexham, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was wedging some top coal down when there was a sudden crunch and the coal fell off a slip which ran up into the roof. The place was well timbered.

PRICE Thomas - 1885 - 10/11/1885 – Age 43 – Hewer. Low Beechburn, John Sharp, Crook, Co. Durham. Broken back by fall of stone. Died on 23rd.

PRICE Thomas - 1888 - 09/08/1888 – Age 38 – Collier. Bwllfa, GWH Brogden, Aberdare, Glamorgan. He was taking off coal to make room for a pump on the side of deep, where 1ft of cliff had been ripped. While wedging top coal this and the cliff above fell off at a slip. Gorllwyn seam, 4ft 3ins Pillar and stall.

PRICE Thomas - 1889 - 20/09/1889 – Age 41 – Fireman. Graig Level, Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by trams upsetting on an engine plane worked by main and tail ropes while he was bringing a loaded journey to the screens on private branch railway.

PRICE Thomas - 1889 - 21/06/1889 – Age 23 – Loader. Fishley, Fishley Colliery Co., Walsall, Staffordshire. Fall of rock roof in a deep coal stall from between timber only 2 feet 6 inches apart. Died June 26th.

PRICE William - 1880 - 03/03/1880 – Age 60 – Collier. Ferndale No.2, D Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

PRICE William - 1881 - 19/01/1881 – Age 17 – Ponydriver. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased after his lamp had been examined ran past the hooker-on to cross the pit bottom in spite of his endeavours to stop him, and he was caught by the descending cage. Proper roads for passing round the pit were provided, but the hooker-on appeared to have been rather lax in enforcing the rule with regard to their use.

PRICE William - 1885 - 19/02/1885 – Age 18 – Banksman. New Hucknall, New Hucknall Colliery Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fell from a railway truck and was run over.

PRICE William - 1885 - 20/08/1885 – Age 37 – Collier. Cinder, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Injured by a stone falling on him and dislocating his spine. He died on 3rd September. His partner and also the collier in the adjoining place should be either propped or pulled down but he refused to do it he was in charge of the stall itself.

PRICE William - 1887 - 14/01/1887 – Age 54 – Pikeman. Haden Hill, W Bassano and Co., Old Hill, Staffordshire. Killed in a narrow stall when foolishly reaching under top coal which he had loosened. They fell upon him.

PRICE William - 1889 - 18/09/1889 – Age 52 – Collier. Cribbwr, Cribbwr Colliery Co., Bridgend, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (rock) 6ft. x 4ft. x 21ins. thick, close to the face in front of the road supported by cogs 8 and 5ft. back. It fell between a joint that was visible and a slant not detected. No props below the part that fell. Lantern vein, 4.5ft. thick. Long wall.

PRICHARD Thomas - 1889 - 27/09/1889 – Age 58 – Collier. Lewis’, Merthyr Havod Lewis’, Merthyr Navigation Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of coal and clod, 6fft. long 5ft. thick, from a back slip and a grime which met 2ft. in. The face was standing vertical. 4ft. seam. Long wall.

PRIDE William - 1889 - 14/06/1889 – Age 23 – Haulier. New Tredegar No.2, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., New Tredegar, Monmouth. He was apparently only slightly injured by a tram which he fell in front, having slipped off when riding out on it, he died 9th. Dec. The evidence was unsatisfactory as to whether death resulted from the effects of the accident but as it was probably more or less due to this cause I have included it.

PRIEST Jabez - 1884 - 23/07/1884 – Age 40 – Dataller. Riddings, Riddings Colliery Co., Old Hill, Staffordshire. Killed when holing by fall of coal over the sprags. Cause a bump.

PRIESTLEY Thomas - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 29. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion of gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Trimdon Cemetery. Left a wife and one child.

PRINCE George - 1884 - 21/02/1884 – Age 37 – Collier. Hoyland Silkstone, Hoyland Silkstone Coal Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Crushed by corves. Died 13th Apr.

PRINCE J. - 1880 - 24/12/1880. Shelton (Ironstone), Earl Granville, Hanley, Staffordshire. Explosion of gas.

PRIOR Jacob - 1884 - 14/11/1884 – Age 40 – Shotlighter. Old Boston, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased had given instructions for some timber to be drawn, and was examining the place before the men commenced work. He knocked out one of the props, which was loose when a large quantity of small stuff crumbled down between the props, and he was smothered before he could be got out.

PRISK John - 1886 - 16/01/1886 – Age 48 – Sinker. Milfraen, Blaenavon Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Injured by a stone falling and died on the 26th. He was the chargeman of a shift of sinkers and was working in the bottom when a small stone fell on him. He had shortly before examined the pit.

PRITCHALL Robert - 1886 - 16/12/1886 – Age 17 – Filler. Hafod-y-bwch, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was told by the contractor to help a collier in the place hut, instead of doing so he appears to have gone into the waste where he was found dead under a stone shortly after. As he had a hammer with him it is supposed that he was knocking out a prop to get some stuff to finish a pack on which he had previously been engaged.

PRITCHARD David - 1884 - 02/10/1884 – Age 42 – Collier. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Explosion of gas. 2 killed.

PRITCHARD Edward - 1887 - 12/02/1887 – Age 32 – Collier. Bettisfield, Bettisfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Bagillt, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The two men were sending timber down the pit and finding it to be too long to go into the cage, signal to the engineman to lift the cage from the bottom landing (level of the ground) to the top to enable them to remove the cage cover. By some means the cage was carried, with great velocity, into the headgear and the safety hook failing to act, the rope broke and the cage with the two men in it fell to the bottom of the pit. 2 killed.

PRITCHARD George - 1883 - 16/03/1883 – Age 33 – Brusher. Earnock, John Watson, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof while timbering a 10 feet road. Stoop and room.

PRITCHARD James - 1884 - 08/11/1884 – Age 23 – Haulier. Dinas, Dinas Steam Coal Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fell out of carriage. 2 killed.

PRITCHARD John (injured) - 1889 - 10/09/1889 – Age 37 – Miner. Glistening Valley (metalliferous). Explosion of some blasting gelatine while boring holes. It is suggested that they inserted a charge of blasting gelatine in the hole and forgetting this proceeded to bore it deeper. 2 injured. 4 months off.

PRITCHARD John - 1884 - 18/11/1884 – Age 22 – Hewer. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Severely injured by fall of stone. Died 23rd instant.

PRITCHARD Jonathan - 1883 - 10/12/1883 – Age 15 - Pony driver. Wynnstay, New British Iron Co., Ruabon, Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. The lad was found dead under the front tub of the gang but there was no evidence to show how he got there. The road was in good order and the only explanation is that he fell while trying to jump on to the tub.

PRITCHARD Robert (injured) - 1886 - 08/06/1886 – Age 20 – Quarryman. Wrysgan (slate). He used his foot instead of his hand to turn the reversing wheel of a swing table the wheel moved suddenly and caught his foot against the frame of the table. 6 weeks off.

PRITCHARD William (injured) - 1885 - 13/10/1885 – Age 43 – Rockman. Oakeley Upper (slate). A small piece of rock fell from the face of his bargain and struck him. He knew the rock was loose but did not think it would fall of itself. 3 weeks off.

PRITCHARD William (injured) - 1885 - 22/09/1885 – Age 48 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). While working with a crane he let the handle slip from his grasp, it flew round and struck him on the hand. 1 month off.

PRITCHARD William - 1885 - 22/07/1885 – Age 61 – Wasteman. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron Co. Ltd., Durham, Co. Durham. He received a slight accident by a fall of coal in Feb. and died from bronchitis and pleurisy the result of a severe cold.

PRITCHARDS George - 1882 - 17/01/1882 – Age 58 – Loader. Whyley, Farley and Duce, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. This man was killed by fall of roof, in working face, feet wide between timber and face of coal. Cause two converging slips.

PROSSER David - 1887 - 01/11/1887 – Age 40 - Collier. Treaman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberaman, Glamorgan. Fall of roof in face of new heading which he was opening and which had been secured by the timberman. Died 29th. December.

PROSSER Ebenezer - 1884 - 30/01/1884 – Age 18 – Haulier. Deep Pit, Coalbrook Vale Colliery Co., Monmouth. Found crushed between a tram and the side of the road. The pony he was drawing was a quiet one and he knew his work well. It is not known how he met with his accident.

PROSSER J - 1883 - 13/09/1883 – Age 18 – Haulier. Risca Black Vein, London and South Wales Coal Co., Risca, Monmouthshire. Fall of coal.

PROSSER John - 1884 - 20/08/1884 – Age 63 – Labourer. Aberbeeg, H Powell, Monmouth. After weighing a waggon of small coal, he was lowering it down the siding, which was his customary work. The waggon ran over him but no one saw the accident happen.

PROSSER William - 1883 - 20/04/1883 – Age 36 – Collier. Rhondda Junction, Rhondda Junction Welsh Coal Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of roof. 3 killed.

PROSSER William - 1885 - 19/03/1885 – Age 48 – Labourer. Deep, Coalbrookvale Colliery Co., Monmouthshire. Fall of stone. He and others were repairing a road when a large fall occurred from the side unexpectedly. It had been tried and seemed safe plenty of timber was at hand.

PROTHERO Thomas - 1885 - 08/06/1885 – Age 47 – Collier. Glyn, Glyn Colliery Co., Porth, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

PROTHEROE Peter - 1889 - 18/04/1889 – Age 18 – Trammer. Elba, Wright Butler and Co., Gowerton Glamorgan. Fall of roof (cliff) 9ft. x 3ft. x 2ft. at face of level going alongside of a fault. Coal was only 18ins. thick next fault and 6ft. on opposite side of level. 2.5ft.of roof had been ripped down on low side to within 2.5ft. of face of coal. There were no props below the rippings which fell. 6ft. Seam. Pillar and Stall. 2 killed.

PROTHEROE Rees - 1886 - 23/06/1886 – Age 55 – Labourer. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Run over by trams. Deceased and two others were going into work, the two others hearing the journey coming got into a manhole and called three times to him to come but he went on. There was a space of from 4 to 5 feet all the way along where he would have been safe but he lost his presence of mind and stood still.

PROTHEROE Thomas - 1884 - 26/02/1884 - Age43 – Collier. No.4 Sirhowy, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co., Monmouth. Fall of stone and coal. A slip in the coal was visible and deceased and the collier in the next stall agreed that he ought to set some timber. He had plenty of spare props, but neglected to put any up but went on with his work and a fall occurred and killed him.

PROUD John - 1884 - 17/10/1884 – Age 21 – Waggonwayman. Shildon Lodge, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Crushed between tubs and side. A draw-bar broke and eight tubs ran back from the set down the bank.

PROUD Richard - 1886 - 21/12/1886 – Age 28 – Hewer. West Thornley, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tow Law, Co. Durham. Broken thigh and severely crushed by fall of top coal. Died 27th Dec.

PROUT Edward William - 1886 - 14/10/1886 – Age 33 - Ginny tenter. Clifton, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Caught by the ascending cage at a mouthing as he was speaking down the shaft. Inspection and inquiry. The fence gate either to have closer rails or to be set further back.

PROUT John - 1887 - 28/07/1887 – Age 16 – Collier. Old Wenallt, Wenallt Merthyr Colliery Co. Ltd., Neath, Glamorgan. He was riding on the fourth tram of an empty journey on the front of which were two 12ft. rails, which the deceased's father had put on to be conveyed to his working place and on going round a sharp curve out of the rails caught the side and the outer end struck the deceased and killed him.

PROUT William - 1889 - 25/09/1889 – Age 29 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. The men were engaged in stopping and after having blasted three holes returned within a quarter of an hour to the pitch when a scale of ground came away on them. Prout was killed outright and his body was not extricated from the debris for a considerable time. Nicholls' injuries consisted of a fractured leg and thigh. The occurrence was evidently an accident as the men who were experienced and careful miners were seen to test the ground by sounding some little time before it came away and then there was apparently no danger. 1 killed 1 injured.

PRYOR Thomas - 1883 - 10/11/1883 – Age 50 – Miner. Tincroft (metalliferous), Tincroft Mining Co., Carn Brea, Cornwall. Was working at the bottom of a winze below the 142 fathoms level when a plank slipped away from beneath his comrade’s feet at the windlass, fell down the winze, a distance of 8 fathoms, and struck him on the head.

PUGH Abraham - 1882 - 21/12/1882 – Age 20 – Haulier. Ynishir Steam Coal, Ynishir Steam Coal Co., Porth, Glamorgan. Crushed between a train of rubbish and some timber.

PUGH Charles (injured) - 1881 - 29/07/1881 – Age 38 – Miner. Bog (metalliferous), Ministerley, Shrewsbury. A casing plank fell upon him, slightly injuring his back. He was assisting to drop a bucket lift. 6 weeks off.

PUGH William (injured) - 1889 - 03/06/1889 – Age 41 – Engineman. Roman Gravels (metalliferous). He inadvertently let go the handle of a screw jack, supporting a heavy weight, thinking a block of wood had been put under it. The handle turned round struck the ground and broke. A piece flew off and struck his jaw. Eight and half week off.

PURVIS William - 1887 - 08/09/1887 – Age 23 – Shifter. Sherburn House, Earl of Durham, Co. Durham. Leg torn and other injuries being caught between rope and a sheave in rope drift where he had no business to go.

PYCROFT William - 1886 - 18/03/1886 – Age 42 - Chock drawer. South Durham, South Durham Coal Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Fall of stone from between two slips while preparing to draw out a chock.

PYE James - 1888 - 03/05/1888 – Age 41 – Collier. Blaguegate, Earl of Lathom, Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inquest attended. He was helping to lift a tub on to the rails when it caught his leg slightly injuring it. Blood poisoning set in and he died 9th June.

PYE John - 1883 - 04/05/1883 – Age 14 – Drawer. Rainford, Rainford Coal Co. Ltd., Rainford, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A collier propped up a piece of dirt band which was usually taken down with the coal. It was done to prevent it getting mixed with his loose coal. He only put up one prop instead of two or three and within 10 minutes the dirt fell upon his brother, the deceased.
