ROWE Mark (injured) - 1888 - 03/08/1888 - Age 28 – Miner. Meadow Bank, Salt Works (metalliferous), HE Falk, Cheshire. Slightly burned by ignition of loose powder, from a candle, as he was preparing a shot.

ROWE Richard (injured) - 1889 - 30/09/1889 - Age 22 - Skip filler. Wheal Sisters (metalliferous), Lelant, Cornwall. Whilst crossing the plat at the 210 fathom level Rowe stepped on the end of a board, that was not nailed, and slipping fell into the shaft on to the 220 level. He fortunately escaped with slight injuries.

ROWE Robert (non-fatal) - 1886 - 29/07/1886 – Labourer. Nitshill, Eglinton Iron Co., Hurlet, Lanarkshire. Fell over some logs of wood, which he was arranging.

ROWE W.H. (injured) - 1882 - 06/12/1882 - Age 47 - Mine agent. Great Laxey (metalliferous), Isle of Man. A short piece of chain ladder, in some stopes, which had been insecurely fixed, fell whilst he was climbing it. He dropped 10 feet and sprained his foot badly. Still unable to go underground, March 1883.

ROWE William - 1882 - 28/10/1882 - Age 34 – Miner. Tregeagle (metalliferous), Joseph Taylor and Co., St. Neot, Cornwall. Deceased, and a man called Edward Pascoe, were going underground to look after the pit work when deceased slipped from the ladders and fell 12 fathoms. The ladder road is a good one.

ROWE William - 1883 - 09/11/1883 - Age 42 – Tributer. Wheal Sisters (metalliferous), Wheal Sisters Mining Co., Lelant, Hayle, Cornwall. Was working alone on the 150 fathoms level when a small quantity of ground fell on him inflicting injuries from which he died 6th Jan 1884.

ROWLANDS David - 1889 - 05/11/1889 - Age 43 – Sinker. Albion, Albion Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Deceased and another were on a stage 22yds. from pit bottom steadying the barrel in which water was being raised from the sump. When about to ascend, in catching hold of the barrel, deceased missed his footing and fell through the opening into the shaft.

ROWLANDS John - 1882 - 21/02/1882 - Age 33 – Sinker. Park, D Davies and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Killed by a portion of the side of a sinking pit falling in. 4 killed.

ROWLANDS John - 1885 - 02/07/1885 - Age 21 – Collier, South Buckley, North & South Buckley Coal & Brick Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. The roof began to weight and deceased's mate went out at the same time telling deceased to go out also. He did not do so and on being called to a second time he started down the road when a fall of top coal took place knocking out the timber.

ROWLANDS Morris (injured) - 1882 - 15/09/1882 - Age 24 – Labourer. Diphwys Casson (slate), Festiniog, Merioneth. He was binding a waggon at the top of a self acting incline and failing to get out of the way properly was knocked down. Thigh broken. Still unable to work March 1883.

ROWLANDS Robert (injured) - 1881 - 02/02/1881 - Age 33 – Rockman. Llechwedd (slate), Festiniog. He tied two pieces of chain together instead of having them joined by the smith but the knot got loose while he was working supported by the chain, and he fell down his bargain. 10 weeks off.

ROWSON R. (injured) - 1883 - 19/10/1883 - Age 20 – Miner. Snailbeach (metalliferous). Slipped while stepping on to a ladder in descending the mine, fell 23 feet, leg broken. Twenty and a half weeks off.

ROWSON William (injured) - 1883 - 15/05/1883 - Age 42 – Miner. Snailbeach (metalliferous). Explosions of unseen remnants of dynamite from blows of a drilling machine on the rock near it. Odgers was skilled. Hewitt had his right
arm broken, knee cap splinters and has lost an eye. 44 weeks off. Rowson had a finger broken and was still unable to work March 1884. Preace was much cut about the head and face. 15 weeks off. 1 killed 4 injured.

ROYLE Owen - 1884 - 23/02/1884 – Age 42 – Dataler. Queen, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was assisting to put up some bars and covering them with debris, and whilst tightening a prop under one of the bars he knocked it too far when the bar and stuff fell upon him.

RUDD Joseph - 1884 - 02/10/1884 – Age 57 – Dataller. Rose Bridge, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. A heavy fall of roof in widework when drawing chocks. Deceased was considered to be a very experienced man.

RUDD Richard - 1886 - 20/02/1886 – Age 38 – Dataler. New Hucknall, New Hucknall Colliery Co., Mansfield, Derbyshire. Repairing the roadway. Undercutting the side when it fell on them. 2 killed.

RUDGE John - 1887 - 16/02/1887 – Age 34 – Collier. Blaensychan, Partridge Jones and Co Ltd., Pontypool, Monmouth. Fall of stone. He and another man were preparing to blast off some stone on the side of a heading when it suddenly fell owing to two slips which ran together at the back and which were previously invisible.

RUFFLEY William (injured) - 1886 - 23/07/1886 – Age 18 – Drawer. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Injured by a tub which had run off the rail and after he had put it on the rope broke and the tub ran upon him before he got clear.

RULE Issac - 1880 - 30/12/1880 – Age 16 – Putter. Medmosley, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Consett, Co. Durham. Crushed between two tubs, the road being heavy his tub overpowered him and ran him back against another.

RULE John (injured) - 1889 - 05/02/1889 – Age 32 – Miner. Drakewalls (metalliferous), Ginnislake, Cornwall. On the morning the accident occurred Rule and Bant, with two other miners, went underground to their work as usual. They commenced work by removing some boards to let down a quantity of sand to fill up a stope which they had previously worked out. During the operation they lost control of the running sand which came away in such quantities that the men had to fly for their lives and Rule and Bant's retreat was cut off by the stope and the level below being filled with the sand. They were ultimately rescued by a new level being driven from above after being five days underground without light or food and were affected to some extent from exposure and starvation. A special report was made in this case giving full details and this was subsequently presented to Parliament. 2 injured.

RULE Thomas - 1880 - 26/04/1880 – Age 20 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fell down a shaft while lowering his comrade with the windlass.

RUNCORN James (injured) - 1887 - 29/09/1887 – Age 14 - Waggon loader. Davenport, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Hurt by steam hoist to which he wrongfully put on steam and attempted to get on the cage as it was ascending.

RUNDLE John T. - 1888 - 28/04/1888 – Age 25 – Shotfirer. Liverton (ironstone), Cargo Fleet Iron Co. Ltd., Loftus, Yorkshire. He had returned to a shot which he thought had missed fire when it unexpectedly exploded.

RUNDLE William (non-fatal) - 1888 - 10/09/1888 – Miner. Gauchalland No.7, Gauchalland Coal Co., Galston, Ayrshire. A spark from his lamp ignited the powder cartridges in his case.

RUSCOE John - 1885 - 27/08/1885 – Age 50 – Metalman. Havannah, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was renewing timber and was setting some middle props under some bars that threatened to fall when a heavy fall occurred burying him. He was an experienced man and was supplied with all requisites.

RUSHOLME T. - 1880 - 22/01/1880 – Age 17 – Shunter. Stanley, R Hudson and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Crushed by waggons. Died 7th Feb.

RUSHTON Edward - 1885 - 20/09/1885 – Age 53 – Enginewright. Midgeholme, Messrs Thompson and Sons, Cumberland. A jack rope on which he was being drawn up the shaft broke. He fell to the bottom.

RUSHTON G. - 1883 - 13/09/1883 – Age 25 – Roadsman. No.1 Victoria, Ebbw Vale Steel and Iron Co., Monmouthshire. Killed by trams. The journey was going slowly up a slope and the deceased intended to pass it suddenly the rope broke and the dog behind the last tram threw it over on its side and it fell on him. He was close to a man hole at the time.

RUSHTON John (injured) - 1888 - 07/03/1888 – Age 64 – Dayman. Outwood, Thomas Fletcher and Sons, Lancashire. Injured by fall of roof where they were drawing props to make a passbye in the level. 2 injured.

RUSHTON John - 1883 - 07/11/1883 – Age 27. Moorfield, Altham Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gas. 68 killed.

RUSHTON Joseph (injured) - 1885 - 17/06/1885 – Age 63 – Miner. Brackley, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Collar bone fractured by a stone from the roof in the Yard Mine. It fell between the face and props which were within three and a half feet from it. It came from a slip.

It was alleged that the roof was known to be insecure but the underground foreman denied that he knew it. Permission was given to the friends to prosecute under the Act if they thought fit.

The owner provided boring rods but allowed the men to neglect boring for which, non-enforcement of the rule, he was brought before me, the magistrates at Ballynonty and fined £1. and costs. 2 killed.
