After a short consultation, the jury returned a verdict to the effect that deceased was accidently killed by a piece of iron falling down the pit, striking the cage and so causing him to fall into the bottom of the shaft. A rider was added, expressing the opinion that the iron rods attached to the cage were not sufficiently strong but were in fact defective.
