LAWRENCE Thomas - 1906 - 07/07/1906 – Age 29 - Cefn Brithdir Collier, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, cliff, 8 feet 6 inches by 3 feet by 1 foot thick, discharged two posts and fell on deceased from the front of the rippings. Brithdir seam.

LAWRENCE William - 1906 - 28/03/1906 – Age 54 - Hungary Hill No. 34 Clay miner, Rufford and Co. Ltd., Worcester. Deceased and another worked in a stall 13.5 feet wide, which had been holed about halfway across its width. A sprag was said to have been set and drawn, and as the coal did not come down deceased proceeded to stamp a hole for a wedge. The coal then came away suddenly from two slips; one of which was visible before the accident. Deceased was killed and his mate seriously injured.

LAWRENSON Edward - 1901 - 17/01/1901 – Age 31 - Lea Green Collier, Sutton Heath and Lea Green Collieries Co., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased had taken the sprags out from under a length of coal, which had been holed, the coal did not fall as expected. He then appeared to have been holing further without re-setting the sprags when the coal gave way and fell upon him.

LAWRENSON Joseph - 1906 - 16/10/1906 – Age 18 - Holt Lane, Sandstone quarry Quarryman, Travis and Reekes, Lancashire. A stone which was being hoisted by a steam crane came out of the lashing chain and killed him.

LAWREY Alfred - 1903 - 08/05/1903 – Age 50 - East Pool & Agar Tin Filler, East Pool & Agar United Mines, Cornwall. When engaged filling a tram at the 212 fathom level a piece of ground fell away from the 180 fathom level, which hitting him caused fatal injuries.

LAWS ? - 1905 - 08/07/1905 – Infant, 3 Thornley. Not employed, Weardale Steel Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Strayed on Colliery railway, about 400 yards, he was run down by a loco and his arm cut off below elbow. Died 10th July, 1905. Co.Durham.

LAWS David - 1902 - 30/04/1902 – Age 66 - Eppleton Wasteman, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died from alleged injury in pit but post-mortem examination showed death due to natural causes.

LAWS James - 1907 - 12/09/1907 - Age 23 - Backworth Hewer, Owners of Backworth Collieries, Northumberland. He was working during the back shift of the night shift driving a water level place in the New South district of the Yard seam of the Church pit. The place was about 13 feet wide and the coal 2 feet 7 inches thick. A bottom canch, 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep was shot up to within 10.5 feet of the face on the left or rise side of the place for tub height. The timbering consisted of planks, one end let into holes cut in the coal on the left side and supported by seam props at the other end these planks protected the tramway as it advanced and were supplemented by props and planks on the low side. The roof consisted of about 14 inches of blue metal followed by host. The putter was in the place at the time of the accident and he was in the cut holding deceased a light while he set a plank. Deceased was on the canch and the plank was resting at one end in a hole cut in the coal and he was about to put a prop under the other end when some of the blue metal, 11 feet long by 3 feet wide on the average and from 8 to 14 inches thick fell open him from two converging slips running diagonally across the place which was very wet. The putter got help and he was released in about half-an-hour but was dead. The place had been visited by the chargeman twice during the shift, the last time about 11 hours before the accident when he fired a shot in the coal, and on neither occasion had he observed danger. There was a sufficient supply of loose timber near. The fall displaced two planks. The Local Inspectors described the fall in their report and stated that they were of opinion deceased was ‘Accidentally killed.'

LAWS James A. - 1906 - 04/10/1906 – Age 23 - Trimdon Grange Hewer, Walter Scott, Ltd., Co.Durham. He was killed by a fall of stone which came away from a slip between the running planks.

LAWSON George - 1909 - 16/02/09 – Age 42 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas, 168 killed. 12 Ann Street, Stanley.

LAWSON George William - 1908 - 14/03/1908 – Age 39 - Wearmouth Deputy, Wearmouth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of side stone while repairing road.

LAWSON John - 1902 - 17/02/1902 – Age 35 - Poneil Mine Oversman, Poneit Coal Co., Lanarkshire. A race of empty hutches was being lowered into the mine. A drawbar broke and two hutches ran down and struck him.

LAWSON John - 1906 - 23/08/1906 – Age 45 - Fordell Brusher, Countess of Buckinghamshire, Fife. Deceased was engaged with others in brushing a hard rock roof on a haulage road, the rock was overhanging and unsupported and part fell and killed him.

LAWSON Joseph - 1900 - 03/09/1900 – Age 29 - Cannock Old Coppice Stallman, Jospeh Hawkins and Sons, Staffordshire. When descending shaft in cage. 3 killed 5 injured.

LAWSON Robert - 1904 - 12/02/1904 – Age 41 - Tursdale Deputy, Bell Bros. Ltd., Co.Durham. Drawing timber in a loose end lift when a post stone fell away at a coal parting as he was cutting out two props and caught and killed him.

LAWSON W. - 1901 - 10/01/1901 – Age 14 - Aldwarke Main Driver, John Brown and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Found dead under a full tub. Probably had been crushed against a prop.

LAWSON William Harold - 1902 - 26/12/1902 – Age 18 - Hamsterley Putter, Owners of Hamsterley Colliery, Co.Durham. Pony ran away and crushed him between tubs and coal side.

LAWTHER Frederick - 1908 - 10/12/1908 – Age 42 - South Garesfield Hewer, South Garesfield Colliery Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Fall of coal and band at working face.

LAWTON Ernest - 1903 - 18/08/1903 – Age 18 - Grassmoor No.4 Horse driver, Grassmoor Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was driving a train of four full tubs along the inclined roadway. The horse fell and deceased sitting on the crank was between the roof and the first full tub which was upended. The horse was killed.

LAYBOURNE John - 1906 - 14/12/1906 – Age 54 - Golborne Collier, Richard Evans and Co., Golborne, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. While he was working at the, face a sudden weighting of the roof took place capping the props and fatally injuring deceased. What was wanted was a pack or chock to steady the roof.

LAYMAN Henry - 1901 - 24/05/1901 - Universal Repairer, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

LAYTHAN Henry - 1905 - 23/12/1905 – Age 37 - Victoria Garesfield Deputy, Priestman Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Died 11th January, 1906. On 23rd December deceased and his marrow were working an extra shift on the pay Saturday when the pit was idle, deceased was conveying rails and sleepers on a tram to his marrow who was laying way. The road he traversed was nearly level and in good order and on that day nothing was said of any accident. On the 24th he complained of his left knee. On Christmas day deceased had some liquor, he worked on the 26th and 27th and on the latter day he said to his marrow he thought he had slipped and hurt his knee but later in the day he told the back overman that he knew of no accident to cause the pain. On the 29th a paper for the Permanent Relief Fund was filled in but never presented. On the 30th he drove to Newcastle and back to consult a bone-setter and said he was perished with cold during the drive. He never worked after the 27th, and got worse and died. A post-mortem revealed suppurated inflammation of the left knee and inflammation of the heart, and a doctor at the inquest was unable to say whether the injury or from natural causes and so the Jury found.

LAYTON Samuel - 1900 - 22/01/1900 – Age 49 - Glapwell Stallman, Sheepbridge Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was at work getting down the roof at the gate lip, in which a shot had been fired some days previously. The broken stone gave way and fell upon him.

LEA John - 1905 - 27/07/1905 – Age 43 - Pleasley Stallman, Stanton Ironworks Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was doing some repairs at the gate end and when he knocked a prop out the roof fell and fatally injured him. He died 29th July.

LEA William - 1900 - 12/10/1900 – Age 14 - Lea Green Blockminder, Sutton Hearth & Lea Green Collieries Co. Ltd., St. Helens. Lancashire Inspection made and inquest attended. The empty journey got off the rails in the jig which caused a small curve pulley, on the floor top of the jig to give way when the rope sprang across striking the deceased who was standing near the top of the jig. He succumbed to the injuries received on the 15th instant.

LEACH Joseph - 1905 - 26/09/1905 – Age 19 - Barnsley Main Waggonman, Barnsley Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. His duty was to attend to a waggon, under the hopper, in connection with the coal washer, and when it was full to lower it and let down an empty waggon from a place about three yards from him. He went behind the full waggon for some purpose, and while he was there a waggon which was being brought down, by a waggon lowerer, from the empty sidings, bumped into one standing above him, and it moved slowly down and caught and fatally crushed him. There is a wall on each side of where the waggon was standing under the hopper, the space at one side was only 4 inches, but at the other, where his work was, it was 7 feet 2 inches.

LEACH William - 1903 - 19/01/1903 – Age 57 - Clifton Hall Dataller, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in waste in a dirt hole, deceased sat near the fireman loosening a prop with a hammer preparatory to using gablock and chain to draw the prop, a crump in the roof caused a stratum of coal to lever the prop out, the coal fell on his head and the side of his body, he walked home. Died 27th January. (Good roof)

LEACH William - 1907 - 06/02/1907 – Age 60 - Bradford Dataller. Bradford Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Deceased and two others were travelling up endless rope jig brow, the rope standing as is the regulation when persons travelling, the brake holding the jig wheel broke, a flaw in the iron set free the rope, both full and empty tubs attached to the rope ran amain down the brow the three men were caught by some tubs.

LEACH William Henry - 1907 - 05/11/1907 – Age 21 - Ellesmere Collier, Lord Ellesmere, Lancashire. Fall at working face from between a pronounced slip and a weight break, with known timbering distance 4 feet the distance from props to face was 5 feet and two props in the row were 5 feet 2 inches apart. Fall 11 feet long. Father to deceased was prevented attending work by an accident. He was a good man and would have carried out the rules. (Roof good)

LEADBETTER Peter - 1900 - 09/04/1900 – Age 56 - Ubberley Fireman, Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Suffocated by firedamp. While trying to clear an accumulation of gas on a rise working he went into the gas without a lamp. A man and a boy who were assisting him but had gone so far into the gas were recovered in an unconscious state.

LEADBITTER Robert - 1909 - 16/02/1909 – Age 28 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas, 168 killed. 2 Peel Street, Stanley.

LEADER Edward - 1908 - 25/05/1908 – Age 41 - Mosside Miner, Gavin Paul and Sons Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased had fired a shot in the coal on one side of his "room" and afterwards sat down to hole, when part fell on the face and rolled over, in his endeavour to clear himself he caused internal injury and died next day.

LEAH Septimus - 1900 - 15/10/1900 – Age 20 - Brands Moulder, Butterley Co., Derbyshire. Deceased fell from a moving train of railway waggons and was run over. The accident occurred on a main line of a private railway and deceased was not employed at the mine.

LEAKE John - 1902 - 20/01/1902 – Age 19 - Lady Windsor Collier, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face coal, 4 feet by 3 feet by 2 inches thick as he was passing. Six feet seam.

LEAKE John Thomas - 1904 - 08/06/1904 – Age 43 - Priestners Crumbuke Collier, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In roadway, 10 yards from the face. Deceased was passing along, having been to the face to ascertain the time of day, his working place being the next to this. The fall was 6 feet long by 3 feet wide. it came from a break and canted out two props set along the edge. Had the break been seen the stone would have been taken down. (Good roof)

LEAR Albert - 1907 - 26/10/1907 – Age 17 - Brancepeth Putter, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. He was hewing, with another putter, in a back lift, when a stone fell from between two joints and killed him. The two props set under the stone were swung out.

LEAR James - 1904 - 29/04/1904 – Age 42 - Blindell’s Black Vein Hitcher, Blindell and Wakeford, Monmouth. At the New Vein landing he pushed a full tram into the shaft thinking the cage was standing there and he fell to the bottom with it.

LEARIE John - 1902 - 21/08/1902 – Age 30 - Whitehill Miner, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was working at the coal face and his neighbour at the roadhead heard the coal giving signs of falling and shouted. In falling the coal knocked out a prop causing the roof to fall and deceased, in trying to escape the falling coal, ran right under the falling roof. He succumbed to his injuries next day.

LEATHAM Thomas - 1902 - 22/12/1902 – Age 36 Dearne Valley Stone header, Dearne Valley Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Fall of a stone weighing 15 tons in a winning heading. Cause three converging slips. 2 killed.

LEATHERLAND James - 1903 - 16/12/1903 – Age 42 - South Normanton Dataller, South Normanton Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was preparing the roof of a roadway, to make room for a bar, when a large piece of roof fell and killed him. Another man was injured.

LEAVENS A.C. - 1903 - 27/02/1903 – Age 41 - Barnsley Main Packer, Barnsley Main Colliery Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof in a working place, a weight break.

LEAVER Edward - 1904 - 18/04/1904 – Age 41 - Aberman Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. At face cliff, 6 feet by 3 feet by 10 inches thick. Deceased had in compliance with the fireman's instructions set a prop that morning under the stone, but a slip of coal which he pulled down struck out the prop and so liberated the stone. Yard seam.

LEAVIS or LAVIS Thomas - 1901 - 18/07/1901 – Age 22 - Murton Assistant rolleywayman, South Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Killed on engine plane by being caught by engine set.

LECK Joseph - 1900 - 09/04/1900 – Age 44 - Lettyshenkin Collier, Burnyeat Brown and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While cutting coal a piece of coal and clod fell causing such injuries that he died on 30th Aug. Seven feet seam.

LECKIE Samuel - 1906 - 08/08/1906 – Age 31 - Canderrigg, Broomfield No.4 Overman, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Explosion of gelignite and gunpowder in a bothy. It was said to have been caused by the bursting of an old electric incandescent lamp which they were testing. 3 killed.

LEDGER James - 1904 - 20/07/1904 – Age 59 - Ryhope Engineman, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. When a set was being brought something unknown caused the brake to fly up and it struck his head causing fatal injuries.

LEE Ernest – 1908 – 23/10/1908 – Age 38 – Netherseal Dataller, Netherseal Colliery Co., Leicestershire. Fall of roof. Deceased and others were raising some steel girders on a main roadway and after taking two out, some of the roof fell and killed deceased. Another man was injured.

LEE James – 1902 – 27/12/1902 – Age 42 – Mosley Common Screener, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Leg crushed by waggon wheel. While lowering two full waggons from under the screens in pinning the brake down, while waggons were moving, he slipped on the frosty ground and his leg got in front of the first wheel of the second waggon. Died 2nd January, 1902.

LEE James William – 1906 – 08/06/1906 – Age 27 – Measham Stallman, Measham Collieries Ltd., Leicestershire. Fall of roof. Deceased was getting coal from the face, when he cut away the coal supporting two bars, and a heavy fall of roof occurred. He died the same day.

LEE John – 1906 – 14/03/1906 – Age 27 – Brandon Stoneman, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. He and his marrow were wedging down stone on an old wagonway. They bared a slip which let down a piece of roof, killing him and injuring his marrow.

LEE Joseph – 1902 – 26/02/1902 – Age 58 – Cannock & Rugeley Wimblebury Stallman, Cannock & Rugeley Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof at longwall face in shallow seam. The face was advancing on both sides of an old abandoned road in the solid coal, which caused the roof to be unusually bad at the place where the accident happened. Deceased was preparing to set a post when a fall of top coal reeled adjoining timber out and killed him.

LEE Percy – 1905 – 09/12/1905 – Age 24 – Wombwell Main Ripper, Wombwell Main Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. A fall of roof occurred in Crossgate and caught and so severely injured him that he died on the 21st. He was holding a light until his mate took some stone down, which appeared dangerous, but before it was touched it fell and brought more with it. The stone was shot shaken and timber ought to have been set under before the accident occurred.

LEE Peter – 1901 – 03/10/1901 – Age 58 – Bedford Collier, John Speakman and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place between two slips and a fault. Insufficient props and fireman failed to enforce a direction to put up props. (Good roof)

LEE Robert – 1904 – 01/03/1904 – Age 18 – West Stanley Waggon attendant, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. He was standing in front of a truck while the pit was standing, when seven empty trucks, by some means, came away down the sidings and joined the one he was in front of. He was knocked down and fatally crushed.

LEE Samuel – 1907 – 16/03/1907 – Age 44 – Arley Deputy, Arley Colliery Co., Warwickshire. Deceased had nearly completed the coupling up of a second shot of 12 ounces of Monobel powder in a stone heading, when the charge exploded. A boy had been left in charge of the battery in a manhole some distance away near to which was the other end of the firing cable.

LEE Sylvester – 1905 – 16/06/1905 – Age 18 – Whitwood Silkstone Bye-workman, Henry Briggs and Sons and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He and another man were bringing an empty train down a drift when it got amain and he, by some means, caught his head against a girder and was killed. There is little doubt they had been riding, which is contrary to the rules.

LEE Thomas – 1904 – 17/09/1904 – Age 37 – Dean & Chapter Onsetter, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was rapping to the surface when the rapper wire, by some means, came in contact with the electric cable in the shaft and he received a shock from which he died within a few minutes. The voltage was 220, and the shaft and flat sheets, on which he was standing, were very wet.

LEE Thomas – 1905 – 13/05/1905 – Age 49 – Eden Deputy, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Stumbled while carrying a prop on 31st August, 1904, and fell forward upon it, severely bruising his side. Sarcoma supervened and he died 11th April, 1905.

LEE Thomas – 1909 – 02/03/1909 – Age 51 – Castlehill Miner, Chapel Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was putting back a charge of gelignite with a wooden stemmer when it exploded. The explosive was hard and therefore unsafe.

LEE William – 1906 – 23/06/1906 – Age 42 – Barrow Collier, Barrow Hematite Steel Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He had taken out the sprags and dropped a length of 6 yards of coal, holed 6 feet under, and filled three tubs. He was probably dressing off some coal from the face when the roof fell out to a weight break and broke off at the face and he was caught and killed. he was alone at the time of the accident.

LEECH George – 1909 – 08/01/1909 – Age 44 – Granville No.1 Stallman, Granville Colliery Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased had finished his day’s work and was preparing to leave the stall, when a piece of roof fell from between the timber at the gate-end.

LEECH James – 1905 – 12/03/1905 – Age 30 – Harehills Deputy, Harehills Colliery Co., Yorkshire. He was engaged in timbering a disused roadway when a piece of stone fell from the roof and injured his spine; died two days afterwards.

LEECH John – 1903 – 26/05/1903 – Age 36 – Grange Buttocker, R Heath and Sons Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of side (ironstone) at longwall face in Redshagg seam. He was pulling stone off the face with a crow bar when a piece of the top section of the seam, which does not usually come down with the stone, fell from an unseen slip and struck his head.

LEEDALE William Henry – 1904 – 05/01/1904 – Age 44 – Auckland Park Deputy, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was drawing back timber, when a stone 4 feet 6 inches by 5 feet by 18 inches, broke the timber down and killed him. It was the last prop. He was not using it or had with him appliances. Buried in Coundon Churchyard.

LEEK Charles – 1903 – 12/02/1903 – Age 39 – Tame Valley Stallman, George Skey and Co., Warwickshire. Fall of roof. A small quantity of roof fell on his arm and deceased died from blood poisoning on the 13th Feb.

LEES Andrew – 1909 – 22/03/1909 – Age 56 – Lumphinnans Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was at work at the face when a piece of face coal fell and rolled down crushing him against a prop.

LEES Bertie – 1906 – 21/09/1906 – Age 16 – Conduit No.3, No.9 Gripper, Conduit Colliery Co., Staffordshire. Struck by runaway tub at foot of self-acting incline.

LEES Donaldson McFarlane – 1900 – 04/01/1900 – Age 34 – Earnock Brusher, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was repairing timber on an engine haulage road when a large fall of roof took place swinging the timber. The roof was broken at the point. Family Home at the time of Death, 11 Pollack Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Informant on death extraction, his brother James Lees of 2 Windsor Street, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Donaldson is buried in Bent Cemetery in Burnbank, Lanarkshire, Lair 2673 with other family members. There is no headstone. Lair owned by Donaldson Lees of 12 Holyrood Street, Burnbank, Hamilton.

LEES James – 1907 – 23/02/1907 – Age 45 – Broomrigg Fireman, Banknock Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. When descending the shaft the cage left the slides and he was fatally injured.

LEES John - 1905 - 09/01/1905 – Age 32 - Donnington Freehold Road repairer, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Fall of roof (clod and old gob), while repairing a horse level in the Double coal, above which the Top coal had been got.

LEES William - 1900 - 12/06/1900 – Age 41 - Moston Great Dataller, Platt Bros and Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway whilst passing along. (Good roof)

LEES William - 1902 - 29/09/1902 – Age 53 - Tanochside No.1 Miner, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Fall of overhanging head coal which he had failed to take down when instructed to do so by the manager and afterwards by the fireman. He appears to have been working beneath it while it was not supported by sprags.

LEESE Fred - 1902 - 24/07/1902 – Age 17 - Great Fenton, Sutherland Dogger on, Stafford Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Run over by tubs on endless rope haulage road. No one saw how the accident occurred. He was found under a tub and appeared to have been riding on the tubs contrary to orders.

LEGG John - 1900 - 29/05/1900 – Age 41 - West Stanley Deputy, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Completely buried and crushed to death by a fall of stone which took place at the end of a short jud which he was drawing.

LEGG Peter - 1905 - 06/11/1905 – Age 41 - Agecroft Dataller, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway whilst repairing, taking out a prop with short hammer when prop liberated, immense stone sidled out four props, could only have been prevented by setting a spurn to bar next prop to be taken, possibly had gablock and chain been used he might not have been under the fall. (Good roof)

LEGGET Walter - 1906 - 04/07/1906 – Age 16 - Bedlington Pony driver, Bedlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. A pond, close to the Doctor Pit, having an area of about 24 yards by 20 yards and 4 feet 10 inches deep is used to store feed water for the boilers. A raft six feet square, made lip of 2.2 inch planks, is secured by a chain to a post on the side of the pond, and is used by workmen for examining the snore at the end of the feed pipe. The pond is fenced round but three lads climbed the fence, and while one was swimming the other two broke loose the raft, and were amusing themselves on it when it capsized and they were thrown into the water. The lad who was swimming rescued one but deceased was drowned. The jury, at the inquest, recommended that a notice board prohibiting trespassing should be put up.

LEIGH David - 1909 - 17/07/1909 – Age 38 - McLaren Collier’s butty, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof while he was drawing down coal at the face. It was not thought serious at first, but he died on 30th July, the result of the injuries to his back.

LEIGH Felix - 1905 - 13/04/1905 – Age 57 - Stanley Drift Hewer, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. He received injuries to his back and thigh by a fall of roof on 13th April, 1905. He died on 4th January, 1906, from degeneration of the nervous system, following upon the accident.

LEIGH John - 1909 - 12/06/1909 – Age 54 - Parr No.1 Collier, Richard Evans and Co., St Helens, Lancashire. When travelling the haulage brow, he appeared to have been run over by the haulage gang in a narrow portion of the roadway. Manholes were ten yards apart.

LEIGH William - 1900 - 05/07/1900 – Age 12 - Blackwell A Horse driver, Blackwell Colliery Co., Derbyshire. Found dead under the front end of the first loaded tub in a train of three. He was probably riding on the limmer iron and caught his head on the low bars in the roadway.

LEIGHTLEY Anthony Brydon - 1904 - 13/07/1904 – Age 39 - Cramlington Shifter, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Deceased, after being off work for three weeks suffering from heart disease started work again at 2.45 p.m. on the 12th and worked alone taking up bottom coal. He was visited by the master shifter during the course of his shift and on a second visit was found dead by him about 2.45 a.m. on the 13th. The local inspectors examined the place and "found nothing likely to cause death by accident." An inquest was held at which medical evidence was given that death was due to heart disease and so the Jury found.

LEIGHTON Enoch - 1901 - 14/09/1901 – Age 21 - Sandwell Park Horse driver, Sandwell Park Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. The chain of a self-acting incline broke and a full tub ran amain and drove an empty tub upon deceased, who was standing at the bottom of the incline. He could have been in a place of safety.

LEIGHTON Robert - 1904 - 09/03/1904 – Age 25 - Bracepeth C Hewer, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. While casting stone, in his working place, a piece of stone, under which there were two props, fell and killed him. He had either removed the timber or it was displaced by the fall.

LEIPER John - 1900 - 14/11/1900 – Age 64 - Rubislaw (granite quarry) Carter, Rubislaw Granite Co. Ltd., Aberdeenshire. Deceased was assisting to load a stone on to his lorry when the sling chain, by which it was suspended, broke and the stone struck him in its descent.

LEITCH George A. - 1906 - 26/07/1906 – Age 14 - Bowhill Drawer, Bowhill Co. Ltd., Fife. Some bars of long timber were placed across the tubs on a rake going up an incline and when the tubs reached the top the ends struck some crowns displacing them and causing the roof to fall upon deceased while he and others were about to unload the bars.

LEMIN Edward - 1909 - 21/12/1909 – Age 39 - Cramlington Hewer, Cramlington Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Fall of band in double stall working.

LEMPTON Henry - 1908 - 04/11/1908 – Age 13 - Fochriw No.2 Collier boy, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face, coal and shale, 3 feet by 1 foot 3 inches by 2 feet 4 inches thick, discharged a sprag and fell on deceased as he was picking up some pieces of coal to fill a tram. Ras Las seam.

LENNAHAM Michael - 1908 - 12/03/1908 – Age 58 - Dinnington Hewer, Seaton Burn Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Fall of roof stone at the working face.

LENNET George - 1904 - 03/08/1904 – Age 38 - South Duffryn Collier, Hills Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. At face shale (clod), 6 feet by 23 inches by 19 inches thick, which had been overhanging about 19 inches and which was said to have been supported by a sprag. Four feet seam.

LENNON James - 1909 - 10/12/1909 – Age 17 - Caprington No. 41 Driver, Caprington and Auchlochan Collieries, Ayrshire. Inflow of surface water into workings near the surface, during the night. 10 killed.

LENON Philip - 1904 - 14/01/1904 – Age 26 - Bold Sinker, Collins Green Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The carrier, running down guides over the sinkers, got damaged and a portion of it fell down the shaft fatally injuring deceased. The winding appeared to have been too rapid and the scaffold, where the carrier was to stop, was too high up above the men.

LEONARD Henry - 1901 - 04/10/1901 – Age 42 - Garw Hitcher, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. They were taking out a water tank, in order to put it in the cage in the upcast shaft to lower the men, when the two trolleys on which they stood separated, and they fell down from the six feet landing to the bottom. They had neglected to fasten the two trolleys together before getting on to them. 2 killed.

LEONARD James - 1904 - 27/06/1904 – Age 29 - Garnant Collier, David Jones and Sons, Carmarthen. Fall of roof at face while examining the face where a fall had occurred since he had last worked there, a stone 2 feet long 18 inches wide and 6 inches thick (clift) fell upon him. Peacock seam.

LEONARD John - 1900 - 23/11/1900 – Age 24 - Bothwell Park No.2 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While travelling along a horse road he was crushed between the side and a race of hutches which he met.

LEONARD Joseph - 1902 - 24/11/1902 – Age 15 - Tymawr Doorboy, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road rock, 2 feet by 2 feet 6 inches by 12 inches thick, fell off a slant on to deceased as he was riding in an empty tram. Five feet seam.

LEONARD Patrick - 1908 - 10/05/1908 – Age 49 - Crawford No.2 Dataller, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. The fireman, when examining the main level on the Sunday night shift, noticed a break in the roof, and gave instructions to prop it, when the roof gave way, capping some props, and fatally injuring deceased.

LESLIE James - 1901 - 19/03/1901 – Age 22 - Dysart Miner, Earl of Rosslyns Collieries Ltd., Fife. Deceased was about to take down acme head coal which had been shorn on both sides. While cutting out the bridge, in front of the rise side shearing, the head coal suddenly came down part of it falling upon deceased and causing injuries to which he succumbed while being taken outbye.

LESLIE John - 1901 - 22/11/1901 – Age 17 - Whitehall Loco. Guard, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. While using a length of wire rope, to move wagons on one line by means of the locomotive engine on a parallel line of rails, he was caught between the rope and the leading wagon and severely crushed.

LESLIE Robert - 1909 - 24/06/1909 – Age 24 - Knowehead Despatch clerk, Banknock Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. When passing between buffers of stationary waggons the locomotive moved wagons, and he was caught.

LESLIE Thomas John - 1908 - 11/02/1908 – Age 44 - Seaton Delaval Shifter, Seaton Delaval Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Fall of stone from face of canch.

LESLIE William - 1904 - 07/05/1904 – Age 45 - Newcraighall Roadsman, Niddrie and Benhar Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was drawing timber when a stone from the roof to the rise fell, and in its descent toward the level it struck a prop, knocking it out and propelling it with great force it struck his head. The seam is highly inclined.

LESTER James - 1900 - 04/07/1900 – Age 74 - Cliff Limestone Quarry Gardener, Clay Cross Co., Derbyshire. Deceased was a gardener returning home and was riding on the tramway, in a stone waggon, when a collision with other waggons caused him to be thrown out and run over.

LETHABY or LETHERBY James - 1909 - 11/11/1909 – Age 43, Gellydeg Collier, Wern Hill Colliery Co., Monmouth. Fall of rock roof at the face, it fell in front of the road from a smooth or slip and joints being "feather edged" near the coal. Double timbers would probably have saved him, but they were not customary in the seam, and the stone, 8 or 9 feet by 17 feet and 15 inches, gave no previous signs of danger. Timbering, as carried out in some of the Continental mines, and probably if carried out at Gellydeg would have saved the situation.

LETHBRIDGE John - 1900 - 16/10/1900 – Age 18 - East Hetton Filler, Walter Scott Ltd., Co.Durham. Filling a tub when a fall of stone fell from roof at a slip between timber and face and killed him.

LETTLEWOOD Frederick - 1904 - 19/02/1904 – Age 23 - Ackton Hall Collier, Ackton Hall Colliery Co., Yorkshire. He was at work at the face when a bump displaced three props and the roof fell from between converging slips and he was caught and killed.

LEVER Dennis - 1904 - 09/07/1904 – Age 60 - Spindlepoint Bricklayer, Clifton and Kersley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Whilst replacing the cover to the shaft, at the coal working landing, he fell into the shaft to the bottom. The shaft was being sunk to a lower seam.

LEVERICK George - 1909 - 18/03/1909 – Age 35 - Shotton Stoneman, Horden Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Struck by stone from a shot on a waggonway.

LEVITT George - 1907 - 10/10/1907 – Age 15 - Allerton Bywater Screen boy, New Silkstone and Haigh Moor Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He left his work and went 16 yards away from it to watch some men who were working on the dirt heap. He was standing with his back against the buffer of a wagon with another wagon three feet from him. The wagon lowerer lowered another two and they bumped into the wagon in front of him and he was crushed between the buffers and killed.

LEVITT Robert - 1902 - 20/02/1902 – Age 15 - Seaham Putter, Londonderry Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Crushed between an empty set and a prop.

LEWIS A. - 1903 - 06/12/1903 – Age 31 - Tankersley Assistant roadlayer, Newton Chambers and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Fall of roof in front of a coal cutting machine. Cause a slip.

LEWIS Adam - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 49 - Cambrian No.1 Labourer, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

LEWIS Albert - 1901 - 24/05/1901 - Universal Waller, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

LEWIS Albert - 1904 - 25/03/1904 – Age 31 - Llanhilleth Rider, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. The front tram of his journey, on an endless rope haulage road, having left the rails at a curve he loosened the clip attaching it to the rope but did not take it off. While passing the tram, at the side to get a sprag, a splice in the rope caught in the clip and pulling the tram forward crushed him against the side.

LEWIS Arthur - 1908 - 23/06/1908 – Age 36 - Glenavon Collier, Glenavon Garw Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face. It was said that while knocking out two sprags, set against a piece of clod overlying the bottom bed of coal, the clod fell and a piece, measuring 5 feet 4 inches by 1 foot 4 inches by 2 feet 2 inches in thickness, struck him and caused fatal injuries. No 2 Rhondda. Naked lights.

LEWIS Ben - 1903 - 06/02/1903 – Age 15 - Bedlinog No.1 Collier boy, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face coal and shale, 5 feet 10 inches by 3 feet 11 inches by 18 inches thick, fell off a back slip. The face was said to have been vertical previous to the accident. Little vein.

LEWIS Charles - 1902 - 21/01/1902 – Age 33 - Gilfach Labourer, Glamorgan Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 12 feet by 3.5 feet by 10 inches thick, which deceased was assisting in getting down fell suddenly on him. No.2 Rhondda seam.

LEWIS Daniel - 1901 - 12/06/1901 – Age 46 - Bwllfa Dare Level Collier, Bwllfa & Merthyr Dare Steam Coal Collieries (1891) Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, while ripping top of a bed of clift, 5.5 feet by 3 feet by 1.5 feet fell. Gorllwyn seam.

LEWIS Daniel - 1901 - 27/02/1901 – Age 38 - Fochriw No.2 Collier, Guest Keen and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. He was taking an empty tram down a dip about 3 inches per yard, with three sprags in the wheels. He walked in front of the tram to keep it from going too fast. It overpowered him and caught his foot in a rope sheave and fell and he was run over.

LEWIS Daniel - 1907 - 08/05/1907 – Age 47 - Glynea Fireman, Glynea and Castle Coal and Brick Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. Fall of roof on road. While setting an arm under a collar, to take the place of one which had been broken by pressure, a prop, which had been set temporally under the collar, slipped out. The timber fell down and a fall of roof, 7 feet long by 3 feet wide and 5 feet in thickness occurred, killing the fireman. Bushley seam. Naked lights.

LEWIS David - 1903 - 21/01/1903 – Age 13 - Lady Windsor Door boy, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was riding on a horses chains attached to a tram of coal when going round a turn he fell off and was run over. He died on March 11th.

LEWIS David - 1904 - 05/12/1904 – Age 62 - Cwm Labourer, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased attempted to jump into the cage as it was leaving the surface. He got partly in and was caught between the top of the cage and the collar boards. He had been told by the banksman to stand back as the cage was full and that he should go down in the next cage.

LEWIS David - 1905 - 10/03/1905 – Age 55 - Cambrian No.1 Repairer, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

LEWIS David - 1907 - 25/01/1907 – Age 38 - Glangwenlais Quarry Quarryman, Lime Firms Ltd., Llandebie, Carmarthen. Died from injuries received from a premature explosion of a charge of blasting gelatine. It appeared that 34 pellets of the explosive had been placed in a shot hole, 19 feet deep and 2.5 inches in diameter, for the purpose of ‘socketting’. The primer containing a detonator attached to the fuse, 16 feet in length, was being lowered into the hole when the charge exploded. It was not intended to stem the hole. The man was alone when the explosive fired so that the exact circumstances could not be ascertained. The weather was very frosty and the quarry is in an exposed position. A warming pan was said to have been used that day but I am inclined to believe that the explosive was not in a fit state for use.

LEWIS David - 1908 - 01/01/1908 – Age 39 - Senghenydd Haulier, Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan, Deceased was taking a tram of rubbish down a road, dipping three inches per yard, when it went off the rails at a turn. He pulled out four sprags, and having unhitched the gun, attached a short lashing chain to the ear of the tram, and to the shafts. With the aid of the horse and two workmen he got the tram so that all four wheels were nearly on the rails. He then replaced the gun. Prior to the drawbar, and was about to unhitch the chain when the horse pulled forward, causing the tram to fall off the rails. The tram being without sprags, ran forward and deceased fell between it and the horse, and was run over. His arm was broken and he was injured internally. It would have been far safer to have laced the sprags in the wheels and, with the assistance of the two men, lifted the tram on the rails without any help from the horse. Lifting a tram on a falling gradient with the aid of a pull from the horse always appears to me to be an unnecessarily dangerous operation, and to attempt it without sprags in the tram is courting an accident. He died in two days.

LEWIS David - 1909 - 14/10/1909 – Age 43 - Natwen Collier, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face, a rock 5 feet by 6 feet 6 inches by 8 inches thick, discharged one post and fell on both men. Their assistant was cutting an additional post at the time Brithdir seam. 2 killed.

LEWIS David J - 1905 - 31/05/1905 – Age 19 - Brook Drift Collier, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; he was buried beneath a fall of the cliff roof, extending several yards along the face, which had apparently been fairly well propped. A ‘kind slip’ coming down in line with the coal was afterwards discovered. Red vein.

LEWIS David J. - 1904 - 11/11/1904 – Age 16 - No.9 Collier boy, Marquess of Bute, Glamorgan. At face cliff 9 feet by 3.5 feet by 15 inches thick fell while the rubbish produced by a shot fired three hours before was being cleared away. The roof was examined by the fireman after the shot was fired and was considered safe. The collier said that he examined the roof 15 minutes before the accident. No.3 yard seam.

LEWIS Edward - 1902 - 26/09/1902 – Age 47 - Bryn Eglwys Slate, Slate getter, Abergynolwyn Slate Quarries Co., Merioneth. While he was driving a wedge into a crack the rook on which he stood gave way under him and he fell with it. Immediately after a large quantity fell upon him and killed him instantaneously.

LEWIS Edward - 1909 - 09/09/1909 – Age 34 - Porthywaen, Limestone Quarry Carter, Porthywaen Lime Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Deceased was leading a horse, yoked to an empty cart, along the public road near the quarry. When passing a motor waggon, which stood at a shop door, the horse shied and bolted. Deceased clung to its head but was thrown down, and a wheel apparently passed over him, fracturing his skull. He died on the way to the hospital.

LEWIS Edwin - 1903 - 10/04/1903 – Age 14 - Mardy No.2 Collier boy, Lockets Merthyr Collieries (1894) Ltd., Glamorgan. His coat got twisted round the haulage rope as he was making his way out to the shaft, and he was drawn about 200 yards. A lad who was with him said that the rope knocked them down and that deceased became fast to it. The rope rose about 3 feet and it was thought that the two boys had been sitting on it riding out but how the clothes became twisted round the rope I cannot imagine. There were no broken wires it was practically a new rope.

LEWIS Emanuel - 1907 - 03/09/1907 – Age 37 - Blaensychan Overman, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He fell from the cage when descending after having his supper at the surface. Apparently the result of his own carelessness in not holding the rail provided for the purpose, as there was nothing to account for his falling out. The cages did not appear to have met with any obstacle in the run, according to the evidence of the engineman, banksman and hitcher. It has been suggested, as usual in these cases, that he may have had a fit or a seizure of some sort but he was said to enjoy good health and was never known to be liable to anything of the sort. These accidents naturally give support to the proposal that gates should be placed on the cages when they are ascending or descending.

LEWIS Evan - 1902 - 17/12/1902 – Age 46 - Ynysfaio Haulier, Troesyrhiw Coal Co., Glamorgan. While deceased was driving a tram of rubbish down a heading, having a dip of 1.5 inches per yard, the gun broke and he fell under the tram where he was found half an hour later by a collier. The iron that the gun was made of was brittle. He died April 24th, 1903.

LEWIS Evan - 1905 - 10/06/1905 – Age 13 - Lower Duffryn Collier boy, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Run over and killed by a journey, which was said to have been running about 3 miles per hour. The roadway was of a good size and there were many manholes 10 yards apart.

LEWIS Evan - 1907 - 02/09/1907 – Age 27 - Aber Collier, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. When a shot-hole charged with Gelignite was being fired, a collier, who had ignited the time fuse shouted ‘fire.’ The deceased who was working in the next stall appears to have mistaken the signal and took it to be one for help. He reached the place at the moment of the explosion and was instantly killed.

LEWIS Garfield - 1906 - 06/04/1906 – Age 15 - Fochriw Collier boy, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face, cliff, triangular in shape, 16 feet by 16 feet by 9 feet, and 3 feet thick, crushed out a cog and three posts and fell on deceased. The collier in charge of the stall was making room to stand a pair of timbers under the stone. There were slants on two sides of it. Ras Las seam.

LEWIS George - 1904 - 22/08/1904 - Clutton Undermanager, Somerset. Died on the 22nd August from pneumonia following on typhoid fever. It was rumoured that he had met with an accident to his knee when underground at the colliery some time previously and an inquest and post-mortem were held.

LEWIS George - 1905 - 01/08/1905 – Age 19 - East Elliot Collier, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof from two slips at the face where he was making room for a post. The place was generally well timbered.

LEWIS Gomer - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 19 - Brynteg Collier, Evans and Bevan, Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; while crawling along the floor, at the face to procure a tool, a bell-stone 5 feet by 3 feet 6 inches by 1 foot in thickness in the centre, and surrounded by five props, fell and injured him so severely that he died on September 8th. 1908. Red Vein. Naked lights.

LEWIS Griffith - 1904 - 15/09/1904 – Age 29 - Maesteg Merthyr Collier, Elders Navigation Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road while breaking a stone where he had been ripping, about 8 yards back from face, a fall occurred causing injuries from which he died while being carried home. Four feet seam.

LEWIS Gwilym - 1905 - 25/07/1905 – Age 24 - Ebbw Vale Marine Rider, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. In consequence of his omitting to close the stop-block at the top of an inclined portion of the engine plane, after taking a full journey from the parting, a tram of rubbish ran wild and crushed him.

LEWIS Henry - 1900 - 08/08/1900 – Age 51 - National Repairer, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road cliff, 8 feet x 6 feet 9 inches x 13 inches thick, fell from a slant while he was removing a cog. Four feet seam.
