LITTLEHALE William Jasper - 1905 - 26/11/1905 – Age 31 - North Seaton Stoneman, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Explosion of firedamp. 2 killed.

LITTLEHALES Thomas - 1909 - 04/02/1909 – Age 37 - Grange Contractor, Robert Heath and Sons Ltd., Staffordshire. This accident was caused by carelessness in handling gunpowder near a naked light. Deceased was in a stooping position threading a bobbin of compressed gunpowder on to a length of fuse. His candle, which had been stuck in clay on to the pack at a height of about 2 feet, fell into his lap and ignited the gunpowder. He was badly burned about the face and arms and received injuries from which he died three days later.

LITTLER James - 1909 - 15/11/1909 – Age 46 - Springs Arley Metalman, J Scowcroft and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Deceased was fatally injured by being struck by the haulage rope coming out of a pulley underground. He expired from the effects of the injuries received, November 27, 1909.

LITTLER John - 1908 - 05/02/1908 – Age 45 - Cannock Chase Waggon Builder, Cannock Chase Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. During the dinner hour a locomotive had drawn some empty trucks out of a repairs siding, and was shunting them back into the main empty road. Before shunting back, the brakesman had looked to check that the road was clear. Deceased appears to have come out to see what they were doing, and in attempting to cross immediately in front of the moving trucks, slipped or tripped, and fell across the rails, and one of the wheels passed over his leg. He succumbed on the same evening.

LITTLEWOOD Robert - 1901 - 27/04/1901 – Age 14 - Morton No.5 Horse Driver, Clay Cross Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Derbyshire. Deceased was moving a train of three empty and two full tubs when he pushed them on to an inclined part of the roadway where they overpowered him and ran away down the road carrying deceased with them. One left the rails and fell on deceased.

LITTS Arthur Haywood - 1903 - 22/10/1903 – Age 16 – Shady Birchwood Plane Runner, Babbington Coal Co., Derbyshire. A train of 12 full tubs got off the rails near the landing place and the signal was given to restart the train, deceased prepared to detach the tubs from the rope. The engine suddenly started and deceased was crushed between the tubs and a brisk wall at the side of the roadway.

LIVELEY James – 1900 – 20/08/1900 – Age 43 – Ibstock Staller, Ibstock Colliery Co., Leicestershire. Fall of side. Deceased and a deputy were looking on at a workman knocking a stretcher out for the purpose of repairing the roadway when the stretcher fell the roof came down and some portion of the side of the roadway rolled off and killed deceased.

LIVERCOMBE H. 1900 – 03/01/1900 – Age 74 – Coegnant Labourer, Norths Navigation Collieries (1889) Ltd., Glamorgan. Struck on the head by a piece of pitwood which was thrown out of a waggon.

LIVERSEDGE E. – 1900 – 14/10/1900 – Age 25 – Tinsley Park Pumpman, Tinsley Park Coal Co., Yorkshire. A motor which drives a pump by a belt started, owing to a switch fusing whilst he was repairing, and he was thrown against a spur wheel by the belt catching him.

LIVERSEDGE W. – 1903 – 16/12/1903 – Age 21 – Wheldale Labourer, Wheldale Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Found dead under the screens, he evidently had been crushed by the waggons when passing across the lines between the buffers.

LIVINGS Evan – 1908 – 02/04/1908 – Age 13 – National No.2 Collier boy, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face cliff, 4 feet by 3 feet by 12 inches thick, fell from between two slants on to deceased, and injured him so severely that he died next day. It was unsupported. Nine feet seam.

LIVINGSTONE Duncan – 1909 – 16/10/1909 – Age 23 – Kinniel Assistant Manager, Kinneil Cannel and Coking Coal Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was ascending on cover of cage, after taking some measurements connected with repairing of the shaft, when he took ill and fell off.

LIVINGSTONE John - 1908 - 18/02/1908 – Age 45 - Portland No.5 Fireman, Portland Colliery Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Either a premature explosion of gelignite killed the fireman and ignited an accumulation of gas in the unventilated workings adjoining the place where they were working and caused the death of the other three men, or one of their naked lights first ignited the gas causing an explosion and also lighted the gelignite which was apparently in the fireman's hands. 4 killed.

LIVINGSTONE Robert - 1901 - 09/12/1901 – Age 30 - Cornsilloch No.3 Miner, Archbald Russell, Lanarkshire. On entering their working place, 2.25 hours after it had been inspected by the fireman, their naked lights ignited firedamp. Another miner was injured. 2 killed.

LIVINGSTONE William - 1901 - 28/06/1901 – Age 30 - Gilbertfield No.2 Miner, Cambuslang Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

LLEWELLYN Henry - 1907 - 09/05/1907 – Age 46 - Weig Fawr Collier, Phillip Richard Esq., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road near face. He was killed by a fall of roof (shale) measuring 5 feet 5 inches by 1 foot 9 inches by 9 inches in thickness. It came away from the slip at a small fault. No support under it. Hughes vein. Safety lamp.

LLEWELLYN Llewellyn - 1901 - 24/05/1901 - Universal Haulier, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

LLEWELLYN Samuel - 1909 - 26/05/1909 – Age 63 - Trefor Tram Oiler, Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased stepped on to a rubbish road to get out of the way of a horse which was drawing empty trains along a parallel road, and was knocked down by a tram of rubbish which was being lowered by the banksman. The banksman saw him and shouted a warning but was unable to check the speed of the tram as the rails were wet.

LLEWELLYN Thomas - 1907 - 30/11/1907 – Age 15 - Cwmdu Drift Collier Boy, Crawshay Bros. Cyfartha Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was walking up a drift at the end of his shift, when he was over taken by a full journey, and run over. The drift was of good height and width, and was well provided with manholes. He had a lighted safety lamp when last seen alive, a short time before the accident.

LLEWELYN J. - 1900 - 12/01/1900 – Age 63 - Maesteg Deep Lamp locker, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While riding out on carriages, provided for the purpose, one of them left the rails and deceased in jumping off fell and was run over.

LLEWELYN James - 1906 - 20/09/1906 – Age 37 - Pentre Overman, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was walking in after a journey of three trains drawn by a horse. When the parting was reached, deceased walked a little faster so as to pass before the horse was turned but the horse took fright and sprang forward. The front tram got off the rail struck out an arm and caused a fall of roof and sides, which killed deceased. The haulier was walking in front of the horse, and so escaped injury. Five feet seam.

LLEWELYN RJ - 1901 - 24/04/1901 – Age 36 - Maesteg Deep Coal Washer, Norths Navigation Collieries (1899) Ltd., Glamorgan. Crushed by crank of a single horizontal engine while he and four others were barring the fly-wheel to get the engine off the centre. Directly the engine moved off, the steam in the cylinder started the engine and failing to remove the bar in time it knocked deceased into the crank pit.

LLEWLLYN G.J. - 1904 - 27/10/1904 – Age 18 - Dowlais Cardiff Road Cleaner, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was cleaning the road of a dip when he was run over by the descending empty journey. No one knew how he got run over. The dip was of good dimensions and there were sufficient manholes.

LLOYD Abraham - 1906 - 10/11/1906 – Age 21 - Albion Assistant repairer, Albion Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Explosion of firedamp. 6 killed.

LLOYD Albert - 1906 - 18/11/1906 – Age 17 - Cefnstylle Pump Boy, Cefnstylle Colliery Co., Gowertown, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas.

LLOYD Daniel or Benjamin - 1900 - 30/04/1900 – Age 40 - Tir Pentwys Collier, Tir Pentwys Back Vein Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of coal from the face owing to insufficient spragging.

LLOYD David - 1900 - 01/09/1900 – Age 19 - Wynnstay Taker off, Wynnstay Collieries Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. He had attached a tub to the rope bottom of the jig and had given the signal to the jigger to go on and as they did not start, for some time, he went in front of the tub instead of keeping at the side to signal the second time when suddenly they started jigging and deceased got crushed by the empty tub starting up the jig. He succumbed to the injuries received the following day.

LLOYD David - 1902 - 14/01/1902 – Age 20 - Onllwyn Collier, Griffith Thomas, Glamorgan. Struck by a runaway journey on the engine-plane, rising 1 in 3, owing to the breaking of a shackle. The bar-hook had been lost on the way out. 2 killed.

LLOYD David - 1904 - 08/07/1904 – Age 28 - Bwllfa Dare Collier, Bwllfa & Merthyr Dare Steam Collieries (1891) Ltd., Glamorgan. On road cliff, 9 feet by 2 feet by 18 inches thick. A fall had occurred on a heading and had been cleared by a repairer who examined the roof in the neighbourhood and considered it safe. Soon afterwards, when deceased and four other men were standing near the place of the fall, a further fall took place and fatally injured deceased. Four feet seam.

LLOYD David - 1908 - 24/07/1908 – Age 45 - Duffryn Amman Collier, Thomas D Jones, Mynyrafon, Carmarthen. Fall of side at face; an attempt was being made to hold up an irregular bed of shale, which had intervened between the coal seam and the regular roof. One prop had been set under it, but at least one other should have been fixed. The shale gave way at a wet division between the beds and fell upon him. Red vein. Naked light. Inclination of seam 1 in 3.

LLOYD Edward - 1900 - 20/06/1900 – Age 29 - McLaren’s No.2 Roadman, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fall of roof in a heading where they were moving the parting and road nearer to the face in a Barry or Nottingham long wall face. The stone was released from slips between the road posts. 2 killed.

LLOYD Edward - 1906 - 18/09/1906 – Age 17 - Bersham Lasher off, Bersham Colliery Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased, when attempting to unlash the chain from the empty tubs got fatally crushed by the tubs against a low bar. There was a low portion of the haulage road about four yards in length. It was recommended at the inquiry that the roadway should be enlarged as early as possible.

LLOYD Ellis - 1903 - 14/10/1903 – Age 32 - Oakeley, Slate Quarry Slate Getter, Oakeley Slate Quarries Co. Ltd., Merioneth. While he was at work in the fallen confused mass of slate and rubbish produced by the collapsed old workings, some blocks turned on him and inflicted injuries to which he succumbed shortly after.

LLOYD Enoch - 1900 - 03/09/1900 – Age 34 - Cannock Old Coppice Stallman, Joseph Hawkins and Sons, Staffordshire. When descending the shaft in the cage. 3 killed 5 injured.

LLOYD Evan - 1901 - 21/09/1901 – Age 50 - Cilely Collier, JS Blindell and Co., Glamorgan. Deceased was pulling a slip of coal down and when it fell a small stone fell with it and cut his wrist. He worked for several days. He was seen by a medical man on the eighth day and was found to be suffering from blood poisoning. He died on 14th April. Six feet seam.

LLOYD Evan - 1902 - 24/03/1902 – Age 27 - Hetty Ripper, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of side at on road cliff, 12 feet by 10 inches by 28 inches thick, it fell from a smooth slip in the side. Deceased and his partner were cutting bottom. Roof and sides were unsupported. Two feet nine seam.

LLOYD Evan - 1903 - 13/03/1903 – Age 40 - Dare Repairer, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face fireclay, 15 feet by 6 feet by 53 inches thick fell, as he was barring down the lower portion of it to make height. New Seam.

LLOYD Evan - 1906 - 21/07/1906 – Age 40 - Dowlais Cardiff Haulier, Guest Keen and Nettlefolds Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, rock 4 feet by 3 feet by 1 foot thick fell as deceased was passing along a parting. The parting had been made four years before and the roof had not been supported by timbers. Six-feet seam.

LLOYD Evan Richard - 1908 - 30/03/1908 – Age 25 - No.1 Seam Level Repairer, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face; while propping under the roof, after a coal cutter had passed by, a stone 8 feet 6 inches, by 6 feet 4 inches, by 9 inches in thickness fell from a saucer-like cavity upon him. The roof is sandstone rock and the maximum distance apart for props fixed by the manager is 12 feet, which has since been reduced to 9 feet, No 1 Rhondda Seam. Naked lights.

LLOYD Griffith R. - 1903 - 22/06/1903 – Age 28 - Alexandra, Slate Quarry Labourer, Alexandra Slate Co. Ltd., Carnarvon. A slate block, which was being hoisted up an aerial incline, broke when near the top. A piece rolled down and struck him on the head and shoulders. Died the following day.

LLOYD Herbert - 1904 - 11/04/1904 – Age 37 - Fforchaman Screen attendant, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased was caught by the clothing and drawn into a pair of bevel wheels at the junction of two shafts, the bearings, of which he must have been oiling when the machinery was in motion. He had been warned not to do so and had power to stop any part of the screening plant to allow oiling.

LLOYD James - 1902 - 01/10/1902 – Age 26 – Tirpentwys Collier, Tirpentwys Black Vein Steam Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Monmouth. The accident was caused by the loose board on the top of the upcast shaft casing, for closing the aperture through which the rope passed and had play room for surging being drawn up to the pulley and knocking the rope off it on to the gudgeon, or axle, the sudden bend and jerk being quite enough to account for the rope break. The rope was a good one breaking strain when tested afterwards, 36 tons working load 4 tons original breaking strain of rope 40 tons. It had been working two years and four months. 8 killed.

LLOYD James - 1903 - 27/01/1903 – Age 33 - Florence Packer Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof (top coal) in waste at working face in yard seam where he was getting stone for building a pack. A goth preceded the fall and several posts under the top coal were reeled out. Died 4th February.

LLOYD James - 1908 - 21/08/1908 – Age 38 - Florence No.2 Roofer, Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was employed in getting top coal, 2 feet 4 inches thick in wastes in the Yard Coal seam. He had started by the pack side and got down a slice, 10 feet long and 1 foot 6 inches wide, in which space he had set two props to the roof with good lids, when a further slice of the same width fell from a break in the top coal and a portion of this fell upon him and killed him almost instantly. Deceased was well used to the kind of work he was doing but, even if he noticed the break in the coal he probably thought it was properly supported by a row of props which were set less than 5 feet apart under the tops into the lids of which projected from 6 inches to 1 foot beyond the break.

LLOYD John (injured) - 1905 - 10/03/1905 - Cambrian No.1, Cambrian Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was the subject of a Special Report by FA Gray. 33 killed.

LLOYD John - 1900 - 21/02/1900 – Age 34 - Waun Llwyd Fireman, Ebbw Vale Steel Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When walking along a main haulage road (the trams on which travel at the rate of about two to three miles an hour) he appears to have tripped and becoming entangled with a tram received injuries from which he died on the 25th February.

LLOYD John - 1902 - 16/12/1902 – Age 52 - Deep Navigation Timberman, Ocean Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at road clift, 21 feet by 10 feet by 4 feet thick, fell suddenly while the deceased were dressing an arm. Four pairs of timbers were crushed out by, I think, a sudden and sharp squeeze. They were preparing to retimber the roadway about four yards further inbye. Six feet seam. 2 killed.

LLOYD John - 1904 - 07/05/1904 - West Cannock Staffordshire. Died on the pit bank while waiting to go down. A doctor certified cardiac syncope, and no inquest was held.

LLOYD John - 1904 - 20/06/1904 – Age 42 - Goodwick Quarry Labourer, Fishguard & Rosslare Railways & Harbours, Pembroke. Fatally injured by a stone falling from a sling chain while it was being lifted by a steam crane from a heap on the ground into a waggon.

LLOYD John - 1909 - 07/07/1909 – Age 54 - Tydraw Labourer, Cory Bros. and Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall at face cliff, 8 feet by 5 feet by 12 inches thick, fell on him from between two parallel slants and from an irregular smooth above. It was unsupported though surrounded by posts. Five feet seam.

LLOYD Joseph - 1907 - 01/11/1907 – Age 41 - Ynysfechan Collier, Lloyd and Co., Glamorgan. Fall of side at face, struck by a fall of coal from the face while he was barring away a large stone which had been shot out from between the coals. This large stone prevented Lloyd from ascertaining whether the whole of the coal and stone, which had been underholed, had fallen. Hughes Vein Naked lights.

LLOYD Joseph - 1909 - 29/01/1909 – Age 35 - Hafod Shiftman, Ruabon Coal and Coke Co., Denbigh. When attending to some tubs, with the haulage, the first tub got off the rails, which appeared to have knocked a prop out, causing a fall of roof on the deceased.

LLOYD Martha - 1901 - 13/04/1901 – Age 25 - Vauxhall Screener, Vauxhall Colliery Co., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. She was coming down the colliery siding and appears to have been watching a passenger train passing when the brakesman was lowering three empty waggons to the screen and could not see the deceased who got run over and fatally injured. Died May 2nd. 1901. Female.

LLOYD Robert - 1900 - 15/08/1900 – Age 35 - Diphwys Casson Slate Miner, Diphwys Casson Slate Quarries Co., Merioneth. Explosion of a third charge of gunpowder in a pillaring hole while he was applying a light to the fuse. Instantly killed. It is probable that some powder had been spilt in charging or that a portion of a charge in a rent made by the previous firings was not covered up and that a spark from his candle caused the accident. His mate was badly hurt also.

LLOYD Samuel - 1909 - 03/05/1909 – Age 30 - Sutton Manor Collier, Sutton Manor Collieries Co., St Helens, Lancashire. When setting brattice cloth in a roadway, a stone fell upon him from some slips at a fault.

LLOYD Sidney - 1907 - 07/02/1907 – Age 22 - Gellihir Collier, Gellihir Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof at face. While he was filling coal into a tram a piece of roof, at the side of the opening in the rippings, overbalanced a post and fell upon him. He was so badly injured that he died on the 11th February. The roof is very jointy especially when wet as it was at this place. Shale roof. No.2 Rhondda seam. Naked lights.

LLOYD T. - 1905 - 16/05/1905 – Age 14 - Rockingham Pony Driver, Newton Chambers and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Deceased left the pass-bye with his pony and one full tub sitting on the limbers; he was found shortly afterwards, about 40 yards away, lying on the floor close to the rails, with the tub off the way and his skull fractured. It is probable he had fallen off the limbers and been crushed by the tub. It was a good road and it is difficult to say what caused him to fall.

LLOYD Thomas - 1902 - 07/02/1902 – Age 55 - Black Rock Quarry Quarryman, Great Western Railway Co., Pembroke. While filling from a heap of stone into a lorry, a rather large stone slid from the heap and crushed him against the lorry.

LLOYD Thomas - 1905 - 03/02/1905 – Age 59 - Deepfields Pumping Sinker, S Staffs Mines Drainage Commissioners, Staffordshire. Fall of side (shale) in a shaft which was being widened. A piece of shale fell about 14 feet above the scaffold on which he was working and striking his head, fractured the skull.

LLOYD Thomas - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 29 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

LLOYD William - 1901 - 01/11/1901 – Age 41 - Aldridge Roadman, Aldridge Colliery Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof. Collapse of newly set timber. Cause heavy fall of rock from cavity above the timber. 2 killed.

LLOYD William - 1901 - 05/02/1901 – Age 30 - Main No.4 Stoker, Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by stepping into an opening in the winding engine house floor.

LLOYD William - 1907 - 26/02/1907 – Age 44 - Tyrergyd Collier, John Wilkins, Glamorgan. Deceased was charging a hole at the bottom with Gelignite, by means of a copper scraper, when it exploded and killed him. He had put eleven pellets in, and was forcibly ramming the explosive when it exploded. The Gelignite was frozen and should not have been used in this condition.

LLOYD William - 1909 - 24/11/1909 – Age 45 - Ferndale No.7 Rider, D Davis and Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Slipped off the chain and fell in front of 6 trams of coal which he was taking up a dip. In consequence of this accident riding has been stopped on this road.

LLOYD William Henry - 1905 - 11/07/1905 – Age 16 - National No.2 Collier boy, United National Collieries Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported on by E Milner-Jones, FA Gray and JT Robson. 119 killed.

LOATES Charles James - 1903 - 02/04/1903 – Age 28 - Brown Hills, Grove Loader, William Harrison Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of side (coal) from longwall face in bass seam; a rate of coal 18 feet long and 2 feet thick in the middle fell off the face at a sooty back.

LOCK Charles - 1908 - 06/11/1908 – Age 44 - Navigation Sinker, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Overwound when about to descend in the shaft on a water barrel. It occurred at a sinking pit when a barrel was to be raised on the runner or banking wagon to allow of its being withdrawn and was due to the steam valve of the engine leaking and not being in working order. He died on 19th January, 1909.

LOCK Samuel - 1908 - 15/05/1908 – Age 40 - Blaenclydach Assistant repairer, Blaenclydach Colliery Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Fall of roof on road, cliff, 4.5 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet thick, fell on deceased as he was watching his repairer lagging a newly stood pair of timber. The stone which fell from the rippings beyond the new timbers had been unsupported. Abergorchi seam.

LOCKETT George - 1905 - 11/12/1905 – Age 46 - Florence Dataler, Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. While repairing in a steep part of an endless rope haulage road, a number of tubs were pushed into the steep part through a tub having been unintentionally left gripped to the rope which was being used for taking tubs to and from the repairers.

LOCKETT James - 1906 - 04/05/1906 – Age 34 - Shelton Deep Top ripper, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was killed by a fall of roof in the ripping, in a level in the Cockshead seam. Three shots had been fired and he had polled all loose dirt. He stood on the pile of debris attempting to pull down a lump partly loose. It was thought he was doing this with a pick instead of a bar and that when the lump came he stumbled on the loose heap under foot and fell beneath the dirt he was pulling.

LOCKETT John - 1904 - 09/06/1904 – Age 24 - Leycett Harrison & Woodburn Screenman, Madeley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed between buffers of trucks while lowering truck to the screen.

LOCKETT Norman - 1909 - 27/03/1909 – Age 19 - Florence Taker off, Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was taker-off at the bottom of a jig in a level in the Moss Seam. He was sitting with his back against the chock at one corner of the jig when a heavy fall of roof occurred in a cavity above the timbering along the level. A bar was broken by the fall and a large quantity of small debris came through the hole and buried deceased, who was probably suffocated. The level was timbered with stout bars with laggings and runners above and partly stowed with dirt above the timber. It seems, however, that the space above was not sufficiently packed, to prevent any further fall from dropping heavily on the supports. Further stowing with debris and timber above the bars in the cavity, which extended to a height of about 7 feet into the roof, might have prevented the occurrence.

LOCKHART James - 1905 - 09/12/1905 – Age 45 - Callendar Pitheadman, Callendar Coal Co. Ltd., Stirlingshire. Two loaded dross waggons were being moved forward to rest against another in front and just as they were about to collide deceased stepped between and was crushed between the buffers.

LOCKHART John - 1904 - 08/12/1904 – Age 17 - Fordell Miner, Countess of Buckinghamshire, Fife. Deceased was filling coal into a tub when a part of the head coal fell and striking him he was killed instantly.

LOCKHART John - 1909 - 26/07/1909 – Age 17 - Over Dalserf No.2 Miner, Brand and Co., Lanarkshire. On returning to a shot of gelignite, which was thought to have missed fire it went off on him. He only waited a few minutes.

LOCKHART Robert - 1903 - 13/07/1903 – Age 18 - Bellfield No.4 Bencher, William Barr and Sons, Lanarkshire. While riding on a bogie on a low part of a haulage road, along with other men, he got crushed against the roof. He died from his injuries on 25th February 1904.

LOCKLEY Samuel George - 1908 - 09/11/1908 – Age 45 - Littleburn Hewer, North Brancepeth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. In lifting a full tub away from the plate ends he ruptured his spleen.

LOCKWOOD Alfred - 1907 - 15/11/1907 – Age 58 - Cortonwood Collier, Cortonwood Collieries Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He and two other men had just stated to build a gate end pack when the roof began to fall without any warning. The two men rushed out of the place and were saved but the deceased was caught and killed. Some pillars were being worked out and there was in consequence a heavy weight on the timber and when the fall occurred it displaced at least 30 props and several bars.

LOCKWOOD Henry - 1908 - 13/11/1908 – Age 20 - Snydale Carter, Henry Briggs Son and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was engaged as a coal leader, and was leading his horse with a loaded cart in a direction parallel to seine stationary wagons towards a level crossing. The cart axle collided with the wagon brake and caused the cart to be spun round and he was pinned between the shafts and wagon buffer. It transpired that his bowels had been ruptured. Died November 18th.

LOCKWOOD Herbert - 1905 - 01/12/1905 – Age 34 - Monk Bretton Collier, Monk Bretton Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was hewing in the Barnsley Seam and had the dirt spragged up for a length of 6 feet by 2 feet wide, and working the coal away underneath this dirt exposed a slip which could be seen before, and the dirt and some coal fell and displaced the timber. He was caught by the fall and fatally crushed between it and a tub which was being filled at the time.

LOCKWOOD J. - 1903 - 30/10/1903 – Age 38 - Lofthouse Labourer, Lofthouse Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. It was the duty of Lockwood to take small trucks containing 1.5 tons down to a line with a gradient of 1 in 18. The trucks moved by their own gravity and were controlled with the brakes. The morning was wet and Lockwood was ordered to take only one truck at a time but he foolishly took two and tried to control them by standing on the buffer of the last one and putting on the brake with his foot. The trucks overpowered him and collided with a train of wagons and he was killed.

LODGE Edward - 1909 - 16/02/09 – Age 17 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 10 Ann St.

LODGE George W. - 1907 - 02/01/1907 – Age 36 - Combs Deputy, Ingham’s Thornhill Collieries Ltd., Yorkshire. He had fired a shot in the ripping of a road and was along with a bye workman going back, to examine the place when without any warning a large stone fell upon both of them. Lodge was killed and the other man was seriously injured. The stone was seven inches thick and came away to two concealed slips and broke off at a cleat at the fast side.

LODGE Thomas F. - 1907 - 01/01/1907 – Age 25 - Etherley Joiner, H Stobart and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Caught and crushed between a truck and an upright support of the coal-hopper.

LODGE William J. - 1900 - 20/04/1900 – Age 26 - Pemberton Inspector, J Blundell and Sons, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He appears to have gone within the fence rail, without informing the winding engineman, and the latter could not see him owing to the winding drum preventing him from where he stood. No one saw the accident but it is supposed that he went to examine the crank pin and was caught with the revolution of the crank, and killed.

LODWICK Thomas - 1904 - 11/03/1904 – Age 44 - McLaren Fireman, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. When walking in front of a bunch of insufficiently spragged coal it fell over and crushed him against a post.

LODWIG David - 1907 - 16/02/1907 – Age 24 - Waunhir Collier, Trimsharan Co. Ltd., Carmarthen. The accident was caused by the snapping of a 4 inches x ¾ inch mild steel hitching plate or draw bar across a rivet-hole, at the tail end of the first tram in a train of nine loaded ones, as the journey was getting over a brow having an inclination of 20 degrees, at the mouth of the main haulage slant. These men with many others were walking up the slant at the end of the shift, when they were run over and killed. 6 killed. Five others were injured. No barhook used.

LOFTUS James - 1903 - 26/10/1903 – Age 24 - Eston Miner, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., North Yorkshire. A fall of stone from the face occurred and a shot was fired and inflicted fatal injuries.

LOGAN M. - 1901 - 08/11/1901 – Age 40 - Nunnery Collier, Nunnery Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. Coal broke over sprags while he was holing.

LOGAN Robert - 1900 - 08/01/1900 – Age 47 - Niddrie Fireman, Niddrie and Benhar Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased and another fireman began to inspect the workings after the holiday, preparatory to work restarting. In going to a rise place by the usual ladderway they found it blocked by a fall and returning they proceeded up the brake incline, deceased leading the way, at the drum gas was ignited by deceased's open light which he carried on his cap and an explosion resulted causing him to lose his hold and fall to the bottom of the incline, a distance of 40 yards. The gradient was 75 degrees. Gas was known to be in the rise place some distance away and both men carried safety lamps besides their open lights but never before had gas been seen in a working brake incline.

LOGAN Robert - 1907 - 16/03/1907 – Age 16 - Urpeth Driver, Charles Perkins and Partners, Co.Durham. Deceased was driving a pony attached to three loaded tubs and a half empty water tub on a road inclining in the direction he was going, about 2.5 inches per yard, the road was 3 feet high and there was ample room on each side and no props where the accident occurred. He had a drag in the front wheel of the third tub. He was seen to start by the waggonway man walking by the side of his set which stopped after it had gone 30 or 40 yards and the waggonwayman, on going forward, found him dead under the second tub, the front wheels of which were off the road. It is supposed he had fallen in some way while attending to get on the limbers. The Local Inspectors reported "We in our opinion consider it a pure accident and there is no blame attached to anyone."

LOGAN Thomas - 1904 - 11/10/1904 – Age 48 - Barrow Collier, Barrow Haematite Steel Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was getting coal at the face when a stone, 7 feet by 3 feet by 2 feet. fell from the roof upon him and killed him on the spot. It fell from a slip, of which he was aware. He was only two feet beyond the last prop.

LOMAS John - 1902 - 16/05/1902 – Age 20 - Grassmoor No.5 Assistant onsetter, Grassmoor Co., Derbyshire. Attempting to uncouple an empty tub, while in motion, he was crushed between the tub and an upright post of the fence to the shaft bottom. He died the next day.

LOMAS Oswald - 1908 - 21/02/1908 – Age 22 - Hoyland Silkstone Collier, Hoyland Silkstone Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. The deceased was travelling in-bye on the main haulage road when he attempted to get into the last tub but one of an empty train, and in doing so was crushed between the tub and a low bar, and died shortly afterwards. Riding was not allowed on this road and he was acting illegally.

LOMAX Alfred Thomas - 1902 - 22/11/1902 – Age 26 - Outwood Collier, Thomas Fletcher and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof at face of working place. A prop supporting following dirt, 10 inches thick, was disturbed in drawing a loose prop from between the set prop and the coal face. The following dirt struck deceased on the back fracturing the spine. Died 14th December. (Good roof)

LOMAX Charles - 1909 - 27/07/1909 – Age 38 - Scot Lane Fireman, William Woods and Sons, Lancashire. Whilst taking down roof in the haulage road, after firing two shots, the roof began to weight. He retreated under the roof supported by a bar, but the fall extended over the bar. (Roof good)

LOMAX J. - 1902 - 13/09/1902 – Age 59 - Birchenheads Collier, Almond and Stone, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire. Inquiry made. Deceased was making a hole in the roof for the stand of his drill when a small stone fell striking his eye and a small portion lodged therein. He worked a day or two after the accident but his eye got much inflamed. He died at the Royal Infirmary, Liverpool from the effects of the accident.

LOMAX James - 1906 - 13/11/1906 – Age 18 - Littleton No.2 Gripper, Littleton Collieries Ltd., Staffordshire. Strained himself when assisting to lift on a derailed tub. He continued to work until 4 p.m., when he went home without reporting the accident to any of the officials. He died 5 days after from acute peritonitis following rupture of the mesentery and strangulation of the intestines.

LOMAX John William - 1901 - 13/06/1901 – Age 26 - Outwood Collier, Thomas Fletcher and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of roof in roadway of working place. A prop, not firmly footed, was pushed out by deceased when shovelling coal down from drawer. Dip 1 in 2.5. Died 16th. (Good roof).

LONG George William - 1901 - 24/01/1901 – Age 23 - Mosley Common Drawer, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fall of roof in working place. A small pillar of coal expected to support a large area of roof, pillar 4 feet long, 2 feet wide, suddenly gave way. Fall 16 feet long, 6 feet wide and 3 feet thick. Died 9th February (Average roof)

LONG J.A. - 1902 - 12/05/1902 – Age 18 - Manvers Main, Plane corporal, Manvers Main Collieries Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. When riding on a train of tubs he, by some means, fell between the tubs and was killed.

LONG James - 1906 - 18/08/1906 – Age 16 - Beamish Rope attendant, James Joicey and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased was employed near the shaft taking forks from the loaded tubs as they arrived by the endless rope. Near where he worked is a vertical shaft carrying 3 wheels, the top wheel, fixed to the shaft, receives the power from the engine by a hand rope the two lower wheels, provided with clutches, drive endless ropes on two main roads. The lowest wheel is about 3.5 feet from the floor and is 4.5 feet in diameter, and is fenced as far as is consistent with its use. The speed of the rope is 31 miles per hour. No tubs were arriving at the shaft but the ropes were running, and deceased and another boy were at these wheels and something had passed between them as to working the clutch. Deceased was between the rope going on to and coming off the lower wheel and was caught and drawn in, displacing some of the fencing. The rope was stopped at once and he was liberated. He was able to speak, and said the other boy had pushed him in; this the other boy denied. The Local Inspectors reported, ‘In our opinion it has been a pure accident and that there is no blame attached to anyone concerned.'

LONG James - 1906 - 24/09/1906 – Age 32 - Byers Green Hewer, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. His spine was broken by a fall of stone which came down by the side of a prop and headtree. He was taken to the hospital but subsequently was removed to his home as he wished to die there. He died 1st January, 1907.

LONG John - 1905 - 21/01/1905 – Age 49 - Elba Repairer, Baldwins Ltd., Glamorgan. By explosion of gas and coal dust. 11 killed.

LONGBOTTOM F. - 1900 - 14/02/1900 – Age 35 - Rockingham Waggon repairer, Newton Chambers and Co., Yorkshire. Crushed between two wagons when repairing the buffer.

LONGSTAFF Charles - 1904 - 13/10/1904 – Age 40 - Roddymoor Horsekeeper, Pease and Partners, Co.Durham. When travelling inbye he was caught by an empty set and killed. He had only got 30 yards from the drift mouth, the place was 7 feet high and the refuge holes 10 yards apart and there was room to stand by the side.

LONGWORTH Thomas - 1901 - 29/01/1901 – Age 20 - Bedford Drawer, John Speakman and Sons, Lancashire. Fall of roof on drawing road whilst taking a full tub along. A ley or lay 6 inches thick, ripe for falling from a slip ought to have been taken down. (Good roof).

LORD Daniel - 1901 - 11/06/1901 – Age 16 - Fernhill No.1 Haulier, George Watkinson Sons Ltd., Glamorgan. Fatally injured by empty journey on his way inbye having either fallen off while riding or bean caught by trams while walking.

LORD Servates - 1908 - 05/05/1908 – Age 43 - Lee (Hardmans) Quarry Engineman, Exors of Myles Hardman, Lancashire. Crushed by wheels of crane-engine. Whilst trying to look round, upright, to see a stone being raised, he slipped, overbalanced, and fell, so that the wheels took hold of his arm.

LORRAINE John - 1905 - 25/05/1905 – Age 39 - Ryhope Shifter, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased suffered from enlargement of the heart and died in the pit from the bursting of a blood-vessel in the chest.

LOT Henry - 1908 - 29/05/1908 – Age 55 - Burnhope Hewer, UA Ritson and Sons Ltd., Co.Durham. When going inbye he fell down in the flat on the approach of a pony his picks, which he was carrying, pierced his abdomen and he died two days afterwards.

LOUDEN John - 1903 - 24/07/1903 – Age 69 - Garriongill Oversman, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire, Explosion of firedamp.

LOUGHRAN Peter - 1906 - 22/05/1906 – Age 26 - Eden Stoneman, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. The shaft was being repaired. By reason of the peculiar arrangements, it was necessary for him to get into a kibble to ascend the shaft at a lower point than that at which the repairs were being done. As he was being drawn up in the kibble a piece of stone fell from the side of the shaft and striking him, knocked him out of the kibble.

LOUNDS F. - 1900 - 15/01/1900 – Age 32 - Aldwarke Main Collier, John Brown and Co., Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

LOUNDS William - 1900 - 20/04/1900 – Age 27 - Wrexham & Acton Collier, Westminster & Brymbo Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Denbigh. Inspection made and inquest attended. After the fireman had fired a shot, loosening the coal which was 7 feet thick, they were attempting to bar the coal down when more came than they expected, and crushed the two men and capping a sprag. 2 killed.

LOVATT James - 1904 - 13/01/1904 – Age 25 - Apedale, Watermills Taker off, Midland Coal Coke and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Crushed by a tub running wild down a jig-dip through a stop-block not having been put in at an intermediate landing. Died 20th June.

LOVE Edward - 1903 - 04/06/1903 – Age 46 - Bothwell Castle No.4 Engineer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While riding in an empty waggon beneath the screens he put up his head and got crushed against a girder.

LOVE Robert - 1904 - 24/05/1904 – Age 32 - Gateside Miner, Sanquhar and Kirkconnel Collieries Ltd., Dumfries. He returned to a shot of compressed gunpowder, the fuse of which his neighbour stated he had failed to ignite when it went off.

LOVE Thomas - 1902 - 11/01/1902 – Age 40 - Ellismuir No.2 Miner, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. While taking compressed gunpowder out of his canister a spark from his lamp, which was illegally on his cap, ignited the explosive.

LOVE William - 1904 - 23/03/1904 – Age 30 - Viewpark No.2 Brusher, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while repairing it. Another man was injured.

LOVE William - 1905 - 20/02/1905 – Age 33 - Lochwood No.3 Bencher, Lochwood Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while attaching hutch to incline rope.

LOVETT Edward - 1903 - 22/07/1903 – Age 55 - Bardon Hill, Granite Quarry Labourer, Ellis and Everard, Leicestershire. While working near a wooden bridge, over which loaded waggons of stone were conveyed, a piece from one of the waggons fell to the road below where deceased was laying rails. The sides of the bridge were insufficiently protected.

LOWDEN John - 1909 - 24/03/1909 – Age 65 - Thornthwaite Lead and zinc Miner, Thornthwaite Mines Ltd., Cumberland. Fell down over shoot.

LOWE David - 1909 - 10/05/1909 – Age 56 - Craigend Surface foreman, Carron Co., Stirling. Deceased was moving some wagons and as they were getting too much way; he attempted to stop them by inserting a coupling pole and as soon as it entered the wheel spokes it came round suddenly and the projecting part struck him and he was thrown under the wheels.

LOWE Frank - 1902 - 27/03/1902 – Age 35 - Glass Hougton Collier, WM Wood, Yorkshire. Died 31st March. He was preparing to set a prop in his working place when he was fatally injured by a fall of roof. Cause converging slips.

LOWE George - 1900 - 20/08/1900 – Age 22 - Dinas Main Collier, Dinas Main Coal Co., Glamorgan. Fall at face cliff, 8 feet x 2 feet x 1 foot thick, fell off a slant while he was holing. Three props were discharged. No.3 Rhondda seam.

LOWE George - 1907 - 06/03/1907 – Age 37 - Clay Cross No.7 Dataller, Clay Cross Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. A shot had been fired, and shortly afterwards a further fall of roof occurred killing deceased and injuring the deputy in charge of the work.

LOWE Isiah - 1909 - 12/01/1909 – Age 19 - Grange Horse driver, Lilleshall Co. Ltd., Shropshire. Deceased, for some reason unknown, left his horse in the stall from which he was drawing, and walked along an adjoining gateway to the face of the next stall in the Double Coal, where his presence had not been noticed. A bump occurred, causing a piece of coal, about 3 feet square and 3 feet 6 inches thick, to burst off the face and fall upon him, the coal had been holed and was standing on three sprags, one at the corner of the buttock, and two under sprags set about 4 feet apart at a distance of about 1 foot 6 inches from the back of the holing.

LOWE John William - 1905 - 15/04/1905 – Age 32 - Bond’s Main Loader, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Derbyshire. Fall of roof. Deceased was working in a stall, between two faults, when a fall of roof partially buried him. He was being got out when a further fall occurred and killed him.

LOWE Thomas - 1903 - 28/10/1903 – Age 63 - Leycett Harrison & Woodburn Dayman, Madeley Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. While walking along a level and about to pass through a drop sheet, he was struck by a tub shoved by a waggoner. There was plenty of room for him to have got out of the road but he appeared not to have heard the tub. He was crushed about his thighs and pelvis. Died 4th November.

LOWE William - 1908 - 30/11/1908 – Age 30 - Black Prince Labourer, Weardale Steel Coal and Coke Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. There were no witnesses of the accident to this man. He was last seen alive at four in the afternoon doing his usual work, the next time he was seen, about 9 pm., he was lying dead under a 10-ton truck. It is conjectured that in crossing between two trucks he had stepped on to the hook of the drawbar, slipped, and fallen and in falling had been stunned. In this condition he had been lying when some trucks were shunted into the siding and these joining up against them he had attempted to cross between had caused them to run over him. The hind wheels of the truck under which he was found were over the rails, and he had been dragged about 20 feet. He was badly injured and dead when found.

LOWER George - 1901 - 24/05/1901 - Universal Waller, Universal Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This explosion was specially reported upon by W Galloway Cd 947. 81 killed.

LOWER John - 1901 - 14/10/1901 – Age 51 - Oakbank oil shale Miner, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was taking out a stoop in a seam, 6 feet 6 inches in thickness and had reduced it to a pillar about 12 feet square. The left corner had been holed and left ungibbed for three days when, as the shale did not break, deceased set a gib under it, extended the holing and bored and charged a shot hole. While drawing the gib preparatory to firing the shot the shale suddenly fell from an unseen lype and killed him instantaneously.
