MAXWELL William - 1907 - 23/09/1907 – Age 45 - Arniston Coal cutter, Arniston Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased had fixed some picks into the disc of a coal cutter and was oiling the parts prior to starting the machine when this machine started and the picks in this revolving disc caught him, inflicting terrible injuries to which he succumbed three days later. It was expected that the switch on the machine was off, but unknown to anyone it was on, and when current at this gateway was put on the power went direct to this machine and set it in motion. Deceased gave orders to have the current put on at the gateway.

MAY James - 1902 - 09/04/1902 – Age 63 - Avenue No.9 Stallman, Clay Cross Co., Derbyshire. It was reported that deceased was injured in the mine in November 1901 but after a post-mortem examination and the evidence of two doctors the coroner's jury returned a verdict that the man died from natural causes.

MAYCOCK Joseph Turton - 1901 - 10/09/1901 – Age 38 - West Hallam Banksman, West Hallam Colliery Co., Derbyshire. He was found in the colliery siding unconscious and died shortly afterwards. There was no evidence that deceased had met with any accident and the coroners jury returned verdict 'that death resulted from pericarditis and shock to the system but how caused there was no evidence to show.'

MAYCOCK Thomas - 1901 - 27/11/1901 – Age 54 - Nithen End, Gritstone Quarry Labourer, Joshua Dyson, Derbyshire. Deceased was attempting to pass over a narrow ledge at the top of the Quarry, for the purpose of getting his clothes, when his foot slipped and he fell down the Quarry face a distance of about 70 feet.

MAYERS Samuel - 1905 - 30/10/1905 – Age 45 - Griff Clara Banksman, Griff Colliery Co., Warwickshire. He was found unconscious and died shortly afterwards. A post-mortem examination was made, and it was found that he died from natural causes, heart disease.

MAYLIER S. - 1900 - 21/12/1900 – Age 19 - Rotherham Main Incline boy, John Brown and Co., Yorkshire. Knocked down by tub on engine plane.

MAYLOR William - 1907 - 11/10/1907 – Age 22 - Stanley Haulage man, Stanley Coal Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. While in the act of attaching a set of five full tubs to an endless rope, travelling at a speed of 2.5 mph, another set in rear of the one he was attaching to the rope collided with and pushed it forward. The first tub passed over him and caused such injured that he died five hours afterwards. Deceased had charge of the roadway and ought to have had the rope stopped before attempting to attach the set of tubs.

MAYNARD Cecil - 1906 - 22/10/1906 – Age 12 - Carn Brea and Tincroft Mines, Schoolboy, Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co., Cornwall. He was playing with others about the sand burrows on the 22nd October, when a slip took place. Two boys were completely buried, and three partially. Maynard died before he could be released.

MAYO John - 1905 - 18/02/1905 – Age 58 - Llanhilleth Ostler, Partridge Jones and Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Hearing a noise of trams running into the cage, in which he was about to ascend from the bottom of the pit, he stepped out just as it began to move and was crushed against the edge of the penthouse.

MAYOR William - 1903 - 17/06/1903 – Age 41 - Queen Fireman, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was returning in the tunnel jig after his inspection and noticing a rock stone looking unsafe in the roof he attempted to draw it down with a pick when more came down than he appeared to have expected and he was fatally injured. He expired the following day.

MAYOR William - 1906 - 16/04/1906 – Age 28 - Bank Hall Ginney tender, Exors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Crushed by tubs near Ginney wheel when trying to put a tub on the rails with the chain returning; he ought to have stopped the chain.

McALISON Cornelius - 1909 - 16/02/1909 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas, 168 killed.

McALLISTER James - 1907 - 20/05/1907 – Age 48 - Shotts Miner, Shotts Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased appeared to be withdrawing his sprags, when the face fell across the greater part of his working face and he failed to get clear and was crushed by the mass.

McALLISTER James - 1907 - 24/01/1907 – Age 20 - Garthshore No. 11 – Bogieman, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Dumbarton. He appears to have fallen off his bogie and got crushed against a prop.

McALLISTER John - 1901 - 03/05/1901 – Age 26 - Dechmont No.1 Repairer, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. The rope came off the pithead pulley just as the cage, with eight men in it, reached the pithead. When the cage dropped the deceased either jumped off or fell from the cage down the shaft. A gland clamped to the rope with a small pulley attached left on by inadvertence by men working in the shaft was the cause of the rope coming out of the groove of the pulley.

McALLISTER Thomas - 1900 - 13/12/1900 – Age 29 - Birkrigg Labourer, Darngavil Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased's duty was to take hutches, loaded with ashes, from the boiler fires and place them on one of the cages running in the shaft at the surface level, in order that they might be raised to the level of the pithead where they were taken off the cage and emptied over the dirt bing. He either was under the impression that the cage was at the required point at surface level when this was not the case or while placing a hutch to be ready allowed it to go too far at any rate he fell into the shaft with a hutch.

McALLISTON J. - 1906 - 03/08/1906 – Age 32 - Moss No.2 Drawer, Pearson and Knowles Coal Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was about to fill a tub of coal at the face, when a stone fell from a pot hole in the roof crushing deceased against the tub. The road was propped on each side, at the inquiry it was recommended that it should he barred.

McALOON Cornelius - 1909 - 16/02/1909 – Age 30 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 7 Bircham St., South Moor.

McALPINE Robert - 1903 - 25/05/1903 – Age 33 - Greenhill Miner, Greenhill Colliery Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased had apparently been holing when the roof fell upon him. His drawer missed him on coming to the face with an empty tub and on a search being made he was found under the fall.

McALPINE William - 1903 - 27/02/1903 – Age 42 - Northrigg Overman, United Collieries Ltd., Linlithgow. The shaft is 61 fathoms deep, Colinhurn Coal seam and 12 fathoms above is the Main coal seam. Deceased came from the adjoining shaft and at the midworking he stepped onto the top deck of the rise cage to be raised to the surface and when the cage was within 10 feet of the top it fell away and he also, it was precipitated to the bottom. The hose pin had by some means worked itself loose from the muzzle and the cage was thus released from the winding rope.

McANDREW John William - 1905 - 13/10/1905 – Age 22 - Brackley Drawer, Earl Ellesmere, Lancashire. Crushed by tub which got from the control of a drawer in a road dipping 1 in 17, using a wooden scotch which came out of the wheel, ordinarily such a slight gradient that the tub should have been held and not got out of control.

McARD James - 1909 - 09/06/1909 – Age 26 - Bothwell Park No.2 Repairer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. He was said to be walking in front of full hutch, after putting a snibble in the front wheel, when the snibble came out and the hutch ran away and went over him.

McARDALE Peter - 1901 - 03/05/1901 – Age 39 - Knownoble Miner, Kerr and Mitchell, Lanarkshire. Deceased was brushing a road in a long wall working. The brushing, which consisted of blaes fireclay and ironstone balls, was too soft to require blasting and was usually taken down with the pick. He appeared to have shorn it along one side and to have been relieving a ball on the other side when a mass of fireclay fell upon him causing spinal and other injuries which resulted in his death six months later.

McARTHUR Alexander - 1907 - 13/06/1907 – Age 21 - Kepplehill Bottomer, Kepplehill Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was putting a loaded tub on the cage when it left the rails and he went on to the cage to put it right, when the cage was raised and he was fatally crushed at the door-heads. No signal to raise was given and the engineman was at fault in taking up the cage.

McARTHUR David - 1908 - 09/01/1908 – Age 27 - Blochairn, Sandstone Quarry Quarryman, John Denholme and Co., Lanarkshire. While working on a ledge the rock on which he stood gave way and he fell to the bottom of the Quarry. He was not using a rope as required by Special Rule 32.

McARTHUR Martin - 1904 - 22/01/1904 – Age 51 - East Plean No.4 Labourer, Plean Colliery Co., Stirling. The rope came off a hoist pulley and the cage came down on him.

McATEAR Patrick - 1902 - 04/09/1902 – Age 30 - Rosehill No.1 Miner, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in waste, close to his working place. He did not require to go to the spot where the accident happened.

McAULAY John - 1901 - 09/02/1901 – Age 27 - Redding Miner, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Deceased and some others were riding on a tank locomotive, which was about to lift some carriages in which the miners were to be conveyed to their work. Owing to the darkness the driver failed to see that the carriages had been left standing nearer to the point from which he was approaching than was usual. He applied his brake reversed the locomotive at the usual place but owing to the skidding of the wheels he failed to pull up in time. Deceased, who was sitting on the front footplate, was killed instantly. The men had no authority to ride upon the locomotive but it appeared to have been permitted to become an established practice.

McAUSLANE Charles - 1904 - 20/12/1904 – Age 45 - Berryhill No.3 Ironstone Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Fall of roof on road while laying rails.

McAVOY Herge - 1908 - 27/07/1908 – Age 23 - Ryhope Hewer, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. This accident occurred in the Hutton Seam where the coal was being worked out on the judding longwall system. The juds were 15 feet wide and two men worked in each. The man on the fast slide of the face had a narrow escape. The roof fell right on to the barrow way breaking down the timber. Up the right side of the stone a slippery back was visible and at right angles to this back, and parallel to the face, a sooty back. The left side and the outbye side appeared to be natural joints in the stone. As the face advanced and the weight of the stone, which was 9.5 feet long by 5 feet 17 inches thick, would come on to the timber. Apparently the outer end lowered first and so canted out the props. There was a natural parting from where the stone fell.

McBRIDE John - 1903 - 03/02/1903 – Age 43 - Clifton Hall Collier, A Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fall of coal and dirt from the working face in front after drawing sprags. Died 4th April.

McBRIDE Laurence - 1905 - 10/11/1905 – Age 15 - Gartshore No.2 Drawer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Dumbarton. When taking an empty hutch down a dook he was overtaken by empty hutches and knocked over the brow of lye above by a race being sent back against them.

McCABE David - 1909 - 10/12/1909 – Age 33 - Caprington No. 41 Miner, Caprington and Auchlochan Collieries, Ayrshire. Inflow of surface water into the workings near the surface, during the night. 10 killed.

McCABE James - 1903 - 15/09/1903 – Age 45 - Aitken Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was taking down coal at a longwall face when a large stone fell from between two keen lypes converging upwards and killed him almost instantly.

McCABE John - 1901 - 20/05/1901 – Age 13 - South Broadrigg Drawer, John Nimmo and Son Ltd., Linlithgow. The roof fell on deceased while he was filling a hutch with coal at the working face. The roof is a treacherous fireclay.

McCABE John - 1907 - 11/11/1907 – Age 42 - Lochore Repairer, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was laying rails on main dook road, when a piece of ironstone from the side fell and striking his head, killed him instantly.

McCABE William - 1903 - 14/07/1903 – Age 26 - Wellsgreen Drawer, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was hanging on a tub at the foot of a short wheel brae and before it had been completely hooked on shouted to the drawer, at brae head, to shove over. This was done more promptly than he expected the end of the chain was jerked away and the full tub ran down struck the corner of the empty one and drove it against deceased causing injuries which resulted fatally two days afterwards.

McCABE William - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 43 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McCAFFERTY Michael - 1903 - 18/06/1903 – Age 42 - Orbiston No.1 Brusher, Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While charging a shothole with gunpowder a spark from his lamp ignited 4 lbs. of the explosive.

McCAIRTNEY Henry - 1900 - 14/02/1900 – Age 43 - Earnock Miner, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. A shot in deceased's place was lighted by the fireman. Deceased retired but apparently deceived either by the sound of another shot or by a bump in the strata thought his shot had exploded and returned to his place and was fatally injured by his shot exploding.

McCALL Daniel - 1908 - 09/05/1908 – Age 37 - Carnock No.1 Sinker, Alloa Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. While working on a hanging scaffold the rope slipped over the flange of the winding drum and the jerk precipitated him down the shaft. There was not a large enough flange on the drum to the amount of rope coiled round it.

McCALL James - 1906 - 12/03/1906 – Age 38 - Lochore Leading sinker, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife, Deceased and another sinker were engaged in a sinking shaft repairing a pump and were on a scaffold while doing so when, by some unknown cause, he fell into the shaft to a scaffold 40 fathoms below and was killed.

McCALL James - 1909 - 08/09/1909 – Age 38 - Auchengeigh Pit bottomer, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Leg cut by full hutches jamming him against an empty hutch while handling it. Blood poisoning resulted.

McCALLUM George - 1900 - 02/07/1900 – Age 33 - Whitrigg Drawer, R Forrester and Co., Linlithgow. Deceased was one of six men who on the night shift in a seam which was only being opened up and in which no bottomer was employed. Having occasion to ascend the shaft he rang the signal bell from the pit bottom. A witness near the pit bottom stated that the bell was rung three times but he failed to observe whether any return signal was given. The engineman and three others on the pithead stated the bell only rang once. As the cage was being raised from the pit bottom in which it was standing at the time deceased attempted to jump on and was apparently caught and crushed against the door head or side of the shaft. He was dragged up for some distance then fell back to the bottom. His lungs had been crushed and he had received a severe scalp wound.

McCALLUM James - 1905 - 18/03/1905 – Age 31 - Wallsend Hewer, Wallsend and Hebburn Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Died May 7th. While the deceased was walking outbye, with his father about the 18th March, he struck his head against a balk and fell backwards. Nothing was thought of it at the time. On 8th May deceased was taken to the Newcastle Infirmary, and found to be suffering from meningitis, from which death resulted on 17th May. A post-mortem examination was made and medical evidence given at the inquest that the meningitis arose from natural causes and not from any accident, and so the Jury found.

McCALLUM James - 1906 - 01/08/1906 – Age 17 - East Plean No.3 Labourer, Plean Colliery Co. Ltd., Stirling. He appears to have stepped upon the top of dross in a hopper which was drawn off at the bottom. Apparently a cavity had formed at the bottom, and his weight caused the arch thereby formed to give way. He was drawn in and suffocated.

McCALLUM James - 1907 - 01/04/1907 – Age 15 - Lumphinnans Drawer, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was filling a tub, when a mass of coal fell off the face and crushed him causing death six days later.

McCALLUM Joseph - 1908 - 13/02/1908 – Age 30 - Blairdam Machineman, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. The dook section of the Dunfermline Splint coal was holed by a coal cutting machine, and the run was about 100 yards in length, the cutting being done in the back shift as usual and the deceased men had charge of the operations. At the time of the accident the machine was nearing the top end of the run when the roof suddenly collapsed burying the men. The fall was very large and had broken along the face for a distance of 36 feet and over to the waste for at least 18 feet and its average thickness was 5 feet to 2 feet next the coal face. The stone which was one solid mass, except a small detached portion at the top end, sat down on the wood pillars and threw out the props. The roof was sandstone of a strong nature and had evidently taken a sudden break. 2 killed.

McCALLUM Robinson - 1902 - 22/12/1902 – Age 24 - St. Helens Hewer, St. Helens Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Died 6th January, 1906. He was hewing at the face of a longwall gateway in Ten Quarters band 8 feet thick, when a stone 5.5 feet by 3 feet by 16 inches fell from slips and a glassy uneven parting between the props and the coal face. The place was closely timbered as the roof was known to be bad and there were loose props lying near. His spine was injured and he never was able to work again. No inquest was held.

McCALLUM Thomas - 1909 - 26/02/1909 – Age 37 - Braidhurst Repairer, Summerlee Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased and his neighbour were clearing away a fall on a roadway, filling the debris into tubs and struck a stone in an old roadway while moving a loaded tub, it caught on one side, and when clearing the obstruction a fresh fall took place and he was buried beneath it. The roof was very bad, and the fall carried away the timbers.

McCALLUM William - 1905 - 20/06/1905 – Age 68 - St. Helens Shiftman, St. Helens Colliery and Brickworks Co. Ltd., Cumberland. Deceased travelled inbye, as usual to his tool box, where he was found kneeling before it quite dead. An inquest was held at which medical evidence was given, and the Jury found that death was due to heart failure.

McCANN Peter - 1903 - 22/05/1903 – Age 17 Wardley Putter, John Bowes and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. Died May 24. Deceased, a pony putter, was going inbye in the Low Main seam with an empty tub and would probably be riding on the limbers. The tub appears to have derailed at a turn and knocked a prop out, displacing a pair of gears. Deceased appears to have gone to the outbye end of a tub to lift it on the way when he was caught by a fall of roof stone. Officials had been past the place several times during the day and observed nothing wrong. The Local Inspectors reported 'In our opinion we consider the accident purely accidental.'

McCANN Thomas jnr. - 1905 - 26/10/1905 – Age 16 - Dockra No.1 Chain runner, Glengarnock Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. In some unexplained manner he was run over by a race of full hutches which he was taking up a dook.

McCARTAN Matthew - 1903 - 04/04/1903 – Age 23 - Margaret, Iron Ore Miner’s labourer, Cleator Iron Ore Co., Cumberland. Deceased was found within a few yards of the shaft in a kneeling position quite dead. Traces of blood were discernible to a point about 150 yards away where he had left a loaded bogie which he had brought out from a hurry about 100 yards further inbye and which point he had left two hours before he was found. There were no marks on his body and nothing to suggest an accident was observed. He had apparently burst a blood vessel and bled from the nose or mouth. No inquest was held.

McCARTHY Henry Justin - 1906 - 07/12/1906 – Age 15 - Carn Brea & Tincroft (metalliferous) Miner, Carn Brea & Tincroft Mines Ltd., Cornwall. He was sent to fetch a shovel from the 182-fathom level to the one, below which he worked, with some men in a stope. He was climbing the ladders between these levels in Willoughby’s shaft, and had evidently fallen from the ladder, as he was found on the platform at the foot of one of them, 8 or 9 feet above the 182-fathom level, but how it occurred is unknown. The ladders were in good order.

McCARTHY D. - 1909 – 29/10/1909 - Age 34 - Darran Collier, Rhymney Coal Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. This accident has been the subject of a Special Report. 27 men lost their lives and 4 were injured.

McCARTHY Dan (escaped) - 1909 - 29/10/1909 - Darran Rhymney Coal Co., Ltd., Glamorgan. This accident has been the subject of a Special Report. 27 men lost their lives and 4 were injured.

McCARTHY Dennis - 1901 - 28/01/1901 – Age 29 - Llanbradach Assistant timberman, Cardiff Steam Coal Collieries Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased and his partner were putting in a heavy arm when it slipped and fell on his head.

McCARTHY J. - 1904 - 23/11/1904 – Age 40 - South Duffryn No.1 Collier, Hills Plymouth Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. While deceased was filling a tram, a small piece of coal fell on the back of his hand and bruised it slightly. He finished his shift but did not work afterwards. He died on March 14th 1905, from blood poisoning resulting, according to the evidence of the Doctor, from the bruised hand.

McCARTHY John - 1907 - 26/02/1907 – Age 25 - Windsor Assistant repairer, Windsor Steam Coal Co. (1901) Ltd., Glamorgan. Deceased and other men were putting additional timbers to support the heavy framing timbers at the junction of two roads, when about 12 or 15 tons of cliff, from the roof and side of a cavity above the timbers, fell, knocked out three pairs of timber, and buried three of the men. 2 killed.

McCARTHY John - 1909 - 25/09/1909 – Age 33 - Dromroe, Limestone Quarry Quarrier, Limerick CC Co., Limerick, Ireland. Unramming an unexploded charge of gunpowder. Whilst charging the hole, using an iron rammer, the fuse was cut. They then began to bore out the whole charge, when it exploded. Deceased was blown from the ledge he stood upon, falling 75 feet to the bottom of the Quarry.

McCARTNEY Francis - 1905 - 30/03/1905 – Age 48 - Hassockrigg Miner, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While deceased was working at the face the roof suddenly fell upon him. The roof was composed of sandstone with clay joints and lypes and stone fell away from between them.

McCARTY Mike - 1901 - 16/10/1901 – Age 42 - Elliott East Labourer, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Monmouth. He fell under trucks which he was taking them along the railway sidings to the screens.

McCLEMENT Herbert - 1905 - 10/01/1905 – Age 20 - Darbishires, Diorite Quarry Stone breaker, Darbishires Ltd., Carnarvon. He was struck on the head by a stone which flew out of a runaway waggon.

McCLEMMENTS Thomas Henry - 1908 - 23/10/1908 – Age 15 - Rotherham Main Pony driver, John Brown and Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. He was driving between the working face and a pass-bye 300 yards away. His usual load was five tubs. The gradient was a slight one, about 1/4 inch per yard except for a distance of 11 yards where it increased to about 21 inches per yard in favour of the full load. When on the heavy gradient two lockers were used with five full tubs. The road was, generally speaking a good one, but the height of the bars supporting the roof from the floor varied and at the place of the accident there was a low bar at the bottom of the heavier gradient. He was taking a set of four tubs, and when walking in front of the pony he appears to have caught his head against the low bar and fallen, and before he could get up the pony and three of the tubs ran over him and killed him.

McCLUSKEY John - 1900 - 23/02/1900 – Age 40 - Whistleberry No.2 Miner, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place.

McCONNELL James - 1902 - 23/01/1902 – Age 30 - Springhill No.4 Furnaceman, Archibald Finnie and Son, Ayrshire. He ran a hutch into the open shaft at the low scaffold thinking that the cage was there and fell after it.

McCONNELL Thomas - 1907 - 17/04/1907 – Age 37 - Polkemmet Miner, United Collieries Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was holing his coal in a stooping place, when it suddenly fell over the sprags, and crushed him, he died from his injuries seven days later.

McCONNELL William - 1900 - 19/02/1900 – Age 38 - Gilmilnscroft No.3 Miner, Gauchalland Coal Co., Ayrshire. Fall of coal while holing beneath it. Caused by the want of a sprag.

McCONVILLE Thomas - 1902 - 23/05/1902 – Age 36 - Stanrigg Boiler fireman, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased descended alone on the cage, the purpose of which was to open a pass-cock attached to the rising main of the top lift of pumps. He appeared to have lost his footing when getting off the cage and fell to the pit bottom, a distance of 85 fathoms. It would have been quite practicable to control the pass-cock by a wire operated from the surface and this has been done since the accident took place.

McCORD Hugh - 1905 - 03/10/1905 – Age 37 - Broxburn Oil Shale Miner, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was taking down the top shale when it fell away and fatally crushed him.

McCORMACK Andrew - 1906 - 25/10/1906 – Age 32 - Cranrigg, Broomfield No.4 Miner, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When ascending the shaft he got crushed between the cage and a beam at the pit mouth. He is supposed to have been stepping off by mistake at a low scaffold.

McCORMACK John - 1905 - 31/03/1905 – Age 35 - Cleworth Fireman, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Suffocated by firedamp, a rising place, 25 yards up, had been stopped working, air pipes disconnected by deceased, firedamp accumulated, found but not reported, fenced off. Deceased went without lamp into the gas probably to knock to colliers approaching place downhill, his hammer found 17 yards up, proving distance he foolishly went, rescuing collier nearly lost his life.

McCORMACK Thomas - 1903 - 16/11/1903 – Age 52 - Sacriston Hewer, Charlow and Sacriston Collieries Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Drowned by an inrush of water into their working places. 2 killed.

McCORMACK Thomas - 1908 - 06/05/1908 – Age 28 - Glencraig Miner, Wilsons and Clyde Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased worked in a place where the roof was bad with lypes, and while holing a large stone fell upon him. The place was well propped, and stone came from between the props.

McCORMIC John - 1907 - 01/10/1907 – Age 33 - Townhead No. 43 Brusher, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. His naked light ignited firedamp. The fireman found but failed to clear out gas in adjoining places.

McCORMICK Owen - 1901 - 13/05/1901 – Age 30 - Moss No.4 Prop drawer, Pearson and Knowles Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was engaged drawing props from the waste when the roof gave way, partly burying the deceased. He appeared to have been using the hammer as his gablock was lying near the coal face at the time of the accident.

McCORRIE William - 1901 - 02/08/1901 – Age 31 - South Broadrigg Miner, John Nimmo and Son Ltd., Linlithgow. At the end of deceased’s first shift in the pit, he was holing the coal in a place when a piece of it fell from a lype and crushed his head.

McCORY Francis - 1903 - 19/10/1903 – Age 38 - Comedie No.5 Miner, Hugh Bain and Sons, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while sitting near the pit bottom.

McCOURT James - 1900 - 15/10/1900 – Age 60 - Orbiston No.3 Miner, Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of pot bottom from the roof at working face.

McCOURT Joseph - 1902 - 28/11/1902 – Age 26 - Washington Screener, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died 6th December. A small stationary engine, by means of a rope, is used to move trucks on the colliery siding near the screens. To get a lead on the East line of rails the rope was placed over a guiding sheave and in such a position that when tightened up it had to cross the top of a pit staple covered with a wood framing which projected a few inches above the ground. The staple was 14 feet deep and 4.5 feet in diameter and there was 14 feet of water in it. When the rope tightened up it caught the wood frame and pulled it off the staple top at about 3.30 am. deceased fell into the staple. He was got out at once but inflammation of the lungs set in and he died a week after the accident.

McCOY John - 1903 - 27/02/1903 - Holmside Hewer, Hedley Bros., Co.Durham. Alleged to have died from the effects of strain by lifting a tub on to rails but a post-mortem examination showed death was due to natural causes.

McCOY Micheal - 1902 - 09/05/1902 – Age 17 - Hindsward Waggon trimmer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Whilst crossing the rails, at the screens, he was run over by railway company's van. No whistle was blown to give warning of the approach of the train.

McCREA John - 1900 - 13/05/1900 – Age 54 - Parkhead No. 17 Miner, Glasgow Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal which he knew to be loose but which he failed to sprag.

McCUE Charles - 1903 - 23/02/1903 – Age 25 - Camps, Clay Quarry Labourer, United Collieries Ltd., Edinburgh. A fall of clay took place on one side of the clay hole and partly blocked the hutch road leading to the face. Deceased and another workman began to fill the clay into hutches and while doing so part of the clay, on face above, slipped and crushed his right leg against the hutch. He died from his injuries a month later.

McCUE James - 1900 - 23/04/1900 – Age 32 – Cowdenbeath, Fife. Crushed by stone.

McCUE John - 1908 - 15/10/1908 – Age 50 - Whitrigg Miner, Forrester and Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was back brushing his road, and when knocking out some of the props part of the roof fell upon him.

McCULLEP John - 1904 - 08/04/1904 – Age 49 - Raisby Hill Quarry Quarryman, Raisby Hill Limestone Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Fatally injured by a fall of stone on his right leg from the side near which he was working there being a thread or parting behind it. Died the following day at Co.Durham Hospital.

McCURLEY Samuel - 1907 - 10/01/1907 – Age 24 - Oakbank Oil Shale Filler, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased left his working place to go for a drink of water, and when passing the foot of a cuddie brae, he was crushed by a runaway tub the cause of this runaway was the opening of a false link on this chain.

McCUTCHEON John - 1906 - 20/12/1906 – Age 16 - Wallyford Drawer, Edinburgh Collieries Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased and another drawer were proceeding to the top of an incline with a loaded tub when it was stopped by some debris and he was making his way round the tub to clear the obstruction, when a stone fell away from the high side and crushed him against the side of the tub. The stone came away at a part of the road where a ‘hitch’ was crossed.

McDADE Francis - 1908 - 02/12/1908 – Age 29 - Auchengeich No.2 Brusher, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When ascending the shaft along with the overman the engineman failed to stop the cage which struck the cross beam and the rope being drawn out of the socket the cage fell to the shaft bottom. The overman escaped by jumping out at the pithead.

McDADE Henry - 1902 - 13/02/1902 – Age 30 - Bothwell Castle No.4 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

McDADE Patrick - 1903 - 30/11/1903 – Age 30 - Bothwell Castle No.4 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

McDADE Patrick - 1905 - 04/02/1905 – Age 59 - Rawyards, Clay Labourer, Alexander Frew and Co., Fife. Deceased had charge of the clay pit and was very careful to see that the face was kept in a safe condition. He sent a labourer to the top to clear away some loose clay and watched that operation from the bottom. As soon as all had been cleared to his satisfaction he told the man to come down and turned to leave when a part loosened by the previous day's rain slipped away and striking him he was thrown to the ground.

McDAVID Nicholas - 1902 - 19/05/1902 – Age 46 - Seaham Hewer, Londonderry Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Died from injuries received while following his employment on May 16th 1900.

McDERMIT Archibald - 1901 - 17/12/1901 – Age 29 - Bothwell Castle No.1 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on drawing road near working face.

McDERMONT James - 1906 - 02/09/1906 – Age 62 - Houldsworth Miner, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. While being lowered with other men in the cage, the engineman lost control of his engine. The valve gearing being reversed, the cage on landing in the bottom was at once raised 13 feet. Scott was crushed between the cage and a beam at the door heads and McDermont was also either similarly crushed or fell out. The overman, who was on the cage, was injured. 2 killed.

McDERMOT William - 1909 - 22/10/1909 – Age 30 - Nellie Brusher, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was filling a tub with debris which had been taken from the side of the haulage road, when the roof suddenly collapsed, carrying four sets of timber with it and burying him beneath.

McDERMOTT Patrick - 1901 - 24/07/1901 – Age 60 - Facit, Sandstone Quarry Labourer, Henry Heys and Co., Lancashire. Whilst wheeling a full barrow along a plank bridge, 11 inches wide, he slipped and fell 20 feet.

McDERMOTT Paul - 1907 - 19/07/1907 – Age 40 - Roman Camp Oil Shale Drawer, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. In escaping from some pieces of falling shale he apparently stumbled and received a shock to his system from which he subsequently died.

McDERMOTT Peter - 1900 - 04/07/1900 – Age 18 - Herbertshire No.2 Drawer, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Stirling. Fall of roof in working place.

McDONALD Alexander - 1903 - 30/11/1903 – Age 55 - Oakley Brusher, Oakley Collieries Ltd., Fife. Deceased was engaged withdrawing props from under the roof to be brushed when a stone fell and killed him instantaneously. He was partly under the brushing when the stone fell.

McDONALD Angus - 1904 - 02/06/1904 – Age 60 - Culachy Labourer, MK Angelo, Inverness. Deceased was engaged digging a hole over 10 feet deep for a manure pit when the face fell and buried him.

McDONALD Henry - 1907 - 19/09/1907 – Age 49 - Riddochhill Miner, Gavin Paul and Sons Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was wedging down the tumphy above the coal when the roof suddenly fell away from some unseen lypes upon him.

McDONALD James - 1901 - 10/08/1901 – Age 45 - Gatelawbridge Sandstone Quarry Labourer, William Thompson and Sons, Dumfries. He had taken shelter from a heavy shower of rain below where another man was holing the clay composing the upper portion of the tops. While there he undercut clay which gave way and fell over on him.

McDONALD James - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 38 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McDONALD James Bowman - 1901 - 26/08/1901 – Age 32 - Donibristle Incline bottomer, Donibristle Colliery Co., Fife. Inflow of moss, 9 killed.

McDONALD John - 1902 - 08/07/1902 – Age 40 - Howmuir Manager, Auchinlea Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. An old shaft was being reopened and enlarged and almost from the start chokedamp had troubled the sinkers. On the morning of the accident the deceased, Jardine, after breakfast slid the rope and on reaching the bottom he shouted he was amongst damp and immediately the manager, who had just arrived, descended with a line with a view to rescue Jardine, and he too was overcome and before assistance arrived both men were dead. The shaft had been reopened to a depth of 7 fathoms and no artificial light was used. 2 killed.

McDONALD John - 1903 - 17/10/1903 – Age 35 - Auchincruive Mossblown No.1 Overman, Auchincruive Coal Co., Ayrshire. When clearing out firedamp from a heading he was overcome by the gas.

McDONALD John - 1909 - 07/06/1909 – Age 37 - Fergushill No. 28 Miner, A Finnie and Son, Ayrshire. When splitting a piece of coal it rolled over against his knee, and slightly injured it. Blood poisoning ensued, and he died on 9th June.

McDONALD John Jnr - 1903 - 08/10/1903 – Age 25 - Monkland No. 11 Miner, James Dunlop and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working place. 3 killed.

McDONALD Robert - 1909 - 27/07/1909 – Age 45 - Kemnay, Granite Quarry Borer, John Fife Ltd., Aberdeen. Deceased was engaged with another workman working off some rock, and a wedge was required, he went to a ledge 25 feet above to get one, and appears to have slipped and he fell to the level below, a distance of 100 feet. There was a "slide" at the ledge and he probably slipped on it.

McDONNELL Michael - 1906 - 03/02/1906 – Age 22 - Heyfield Dataller, West Leigh Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. In a narrow place, passing through faults practically a stone heading, the leading man preparing to fix his drilling machine prop, deceased was shovelling some loose dirt back when a stone came away from a fault slip on to him, stone 5 feet by 4 feet and 12 inches in thickness at the slip feathering to the edge towards the face. The stone ought to have been pulled down. (Roof, bad locally)

McDONOUGH Anthony - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 29 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McDOWELL James - 1908 - 26/02/1908 – Age 40 - Hopetoun Oil Shale Miner, Youngs Paraffin Light and Mineral Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was fixing rails on the roadway. The roof was much broken by cross joints and the timber becoming displaced caused it to fall on him.

McDOWELL Robert - 1906 - 04/07/1906 – Age 45 - Forthill Quarry Quarrier, Ballycarry Lime Co., Co. Antrim, Ireland. About 14 feet in length of overburden soil furze and tree root, undermined 5 feet fell on him whilst using a crowbar to lever more basalt out. The depth of the fall was 6 feet. It was sheer recklessness.

McELLEN Thomas - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 40 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McEWAN James – 1900 – 24/11/1900 – Age 14 – Gilmilnscroft No.4 Drawer, Gauchalland Coal Co. Ayrshire. He entered a road adjoining his working place and on climbing over a fall his naked light ignited firedamp. The fireman stated that he had been redding the fall a short time before the explosion. The deceased ought not to have gone into the road.

McEWAN James – 1902 – 08/09/1902 – Age 28 – Newton No.2 Brusher, James Dunlop and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Apparently a spark from his lamp ignited compressed gunpowder which he was carrying exposed or preparing for a shot.

McEWAN John – 1906 – 18/09/1906 – Age 16 – Minto Drawer, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was filling coal into a tub, which had been holed the previous shift, by a coal-cutting machine, when a fall of roof took place and he was killed.

McEWAN Patrick - 1902 - 22/03/1902 – Age 24 - Lumphinnans Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased and another workman were in their way home after finishing their shift and just as they were walking down a steep incline the wheeler at the top pushed a loaded tub over the top which overtook him.

McEWAN Peter - 1909 - 11/03/1909 – Age 27 - Howmuir Machineman, Auchinlea Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was driver of an electric coal cutter and had charge of the other machine-men. The accident occurred at a road head which was newly brushed and which deceased had examined while the machine was standing. It had just been set going again, when a large stone fell and killed him. Flat crowns were not in use in the machine wall, but if two had been applied there, the accident would not have occurred.

McEWAN Robert - 1903 - 27/03/1903 – Age 14 - Wallyford Stone picker, Edinburgh Collieries Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was walking on the picking table in the opposite direction to that in which it was travelling when he stumbled and fell among the driving wheels and was fatally crushed between the spur wheel and a beam.

McEWAN Thomas - 1901 - 14/03/1901 – Age 16 - Devon Pit boy, Alloa Coal Co. Ltd., Clackmannan. Deceased had bean endeavouring to unhook a miner's pin or token from a nail underneath the body of a loaded tub. While crossing in front of the tub his foot was caught by the creeper chain which dragged him fracturing and tearing off the leg at the knee. He succumbed to the injuries on the following morning.

McEWAN William Clackmannan - 1903 - 11/11/1903 – Age 45 - Inkerman, Douglas No.3 Ironstone Bottomer, Merry and Cuninghame Ltd., Renfrew. Apparently he was knocked into the cage seat and crushed by a full hutch which ran forward by gravitation.

McFADDEN John - 1908 - 14/05/1908 – Age 42 - Blackwater Dam, Granite Quarry Quarryman, Sir John Jackson Ltd., Argyll. A stone which he and another two men had tried to pinch down canted over on him. He fell when trying to spring back.

McFARLANE James - 1901 - 15/02/1901 – Age 44 - Hill of Beath Oncostman, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Suffocated by gases from an underground fire. 7 killed.

McFARLANE James - 1901 - 15/05/1901 – Age 15 - Loganlea Pony driver, Loganlea Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased appeared to have been riding outbye on the first of a set of tubs and to have fallen in front of them, probably owing to his head having come in contact with a haulage rope roller which was hung from the roof. He was found lying under the leading tub. His skull had been fractured.

McFARLANE Michael - 1909 - 03/09/1909 – Age 42 - Cowdenbeath No. 10 Roadsman, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was engaged with the overman and some others clearing a fall on a main incline. The overman had sounded the roof several times and was satisfied with it. When they were about finished a large stone fell from a height of about 10 feet and injured McFarlane so badly that he died the same day.

McGAHAY Francis - 1902 - 30/01/1902 – Age 52 - Silverdale No.6 Collier, Butterley Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of a large block of coal from a slip at working face in 8 feet Banbury seam. Inclination of seam 45 deg. He appeared to have been trying to loosen the coal while standing in front of it.

McGANTY John - 1908 - 06/01/1908 – Age 37 - Sutton Heath Collier, Sutton Heath and Lea Green Collieries Co., St Helens, Lancashire. The roof at four road ends came down, falling through to old workings of the seam above, knocking out several bars, and crushing deceased.

McGARRY John - 1907 - 03/08/1907 – Age 51 - Cadder No. 17 Ironstone Miner, Carron Co., Lanarkshire. While illegally riding on a race of hutches being drawn up a dook he got crushed against the brick wall forming the side of the road.

McGARRY Luke - 1907 - 25/03/1907 – Age 27 - Florence Packer, Florence Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Deceased was drawing timber, 5 yards down a waste in the main coal, while setting a prop under a bad piece of roof in order to protect himself for the work he had in hand the piece of roof (bass) under which he was setting the post fell and caught him before he could move back out of the way.

McGARRY Thomas - 1905 - 07/06/1905 – Age 16 - Sheilds Miner, Glasgow Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

McGARTLAND Patrick - 1907 - 22/07/1907 – Age 34 - Cowdenbeath No. 10 Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased and another man were engaged making a airway through waste ground when a large fall occurred, displacing some timber which had been recently set and burying the three men. The Ostler ,with the assistance of the third man, managed to get himself freed and groped his way in the dark to where a pony stood, it led him to the shaft bottom where he got help. McGartland died before being extricated and the Ostler died five days later. At the Fatal Accident Inquiry subsequently held into the circumstances of the accident the jury, very properly, commended the pluck action of the Ostler in going for help a distance of 500 yards without a light although being fatally injured. 2 killed.

McGAW William - 1900 - 07/06/1900 – Age 45 - Portland No. 8 Labourer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. When working beneath a shaking screen the hangers supporting it gave way and it fell on him.

McGEACHAN James - 1903 - 01/10/1903 – Age 30 - Kenmuirhill Drawer, Glasgow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Struck by the flame etc. from a shot of 2.5 lbs. of compressed gunpowder which blew through another shothole.

McGEARY Albert - 1909 - 16/02/09 – Age 14 - West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 16 Henry St.

McGHEE Jeannie - 1905 - 23/12/1905 – Age 19 Auchinreoch Stone picker, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Stirling. For some unknown reason she went over a fence and got caught by the blades of a dross conveyor. Female.

McGHEE John - 1905 - 02/12/1905 – Age 51 - Wallyford Miner, Edinburgh Collieries Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was "shearing" in the right hand side of a close place to relieve his coal when it suddenly fell, in trying to clear himself he slipped on the pavement in front of it and was killed instantaneously.

McGHEE Peter - 1909 - 21/05/1909 – Age 36 - Rosehall No. 12 Brusher, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of side of road while repairing it.

McGHIE James - 1907 - 11/01/1907 – Age 58 - Dykeland No. 1 Miner, Summerlee Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working face.

McGIBBON Alexander - 1903 - 28/04/1903 – Age 28 - Holytown No. 12 Fireman, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Explosion of bellite when preparing to charge a shothole. Another man was injured. The particulars or the accident are not known.

McGIE William - 1908 - 23/05/1908 – Age 41 - Navigation Sinker, Nixons Navigation Co. Ltd., Glamorgan. The accident was the result of the breakage of a tooth of a cog wheel of a steam crab, which was lowering in the shaft a half moon stage, on which were several sinkers. The stage was being lowered by the brake, when the engine-driver, thinking that it was being lowered too rapidly, applied steam against the engine and stopped it rather suddenly. After about a minute the crab was again put in motion, and the broken tooth, which must have snapped when the engine was checked, forced the cog wheels apart, broken off segments of both spur and pinion, injured the brake path, and rendered the brake inoperative. The stage, being out of control, fell 18 yards to the bottom of the shaft, and canting on the uneven floor, threw deceased violently against the shaft side. He sustained a compound fracture of the skull, and died on the following day.

McGILLVRAY George - 1907 - 24/07/1907 – Age 44 - Michael Shaftsman, Weymss Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased and his neighbour descended the shaft about 4.30 am. and went into the dip side to examine the pumps, and after doing so they came back and found the dip cage in the bottom; deceased made to cross on to the cage at the end of the shaft and just as he did so the cage was raised and he was taken up to a bunton 8 feet above and fatally crushed. After deceased and his neighbour descended several cages had been run conveying the firemen and the cage on which deceased stepped had been signalled away in this usual way unknown to deceased. It was clearly the duty of deceased to signal before he stepped on to the cage.
