McGINLAY Frank - 1902 - 24/04/1902 – Age 44 - Drumbreck No.1 Brusher, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Fall of roof at roadhead. He died on 11th June but it is doubtful if death was due to the accident.

McGINNES Patrick - 1904 - 06/09/1904 – Age 40 - Broomhouse Brusher, Haughead Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When entering a place to commence work his naked light ignited firedamp. Another man was injured.

McGINTY Hugh - 1902 - 20/06/1902 – Age 47 - Bothwell Castle No.1 Brusher, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at brushing face. Apparently he had knocked out three props leaving more than the prescribed area of roof unsupported.

McGINTY James - 1906 - 21/12/1906 – Age 39 - Simpsonland No.2 Roadsman, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. While descending the shaft, after repairing some defect, the barring gave way, 12 fathoms above them, and some 50 tons of debris fell from the side of the shaft upon the cage. 3 killed.

McGIVERN George - 1900 - 22/08/1900 – Age 23 - Ballynacraig (granite Quarry) Labourer, Robert Innigan, Co. Down, Ireland. Hit by a stone falling from a bogey wagon. Died 26th Aug.

McGLONE John – 1907 – 19/03/1907 – Age 15 – North Biddick Driver, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. Trying to hold a full tub back down a dipping road, it overpowered him and squeezed him against another tub already standing on the road.

McGOLDRICH - John - 1907 - 14/10/1907 – Age 24 - Blackrigg Labourer, United Collieries Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was apparently trying to move a waggon, partly loaded, against a gradient of 1 in 48, by means of a crowbar on the wheel, when it moved back and by some means he fell on this rail and the last wheel rested on his body.

McGOLDRICK John – 1905 – 02/03/1905 – Age 23 – Dechmont Miner, Archibald Russell Ltd., Lanarkshire. Going up a cuddie brae with a hutch, the rope broke and the cuddie or balance bogie ran down and caught him.

McGORRELL Myles – 1907 – 09/09/1907 – Age 50 – Ryhope Labourer, Ryhope Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He was crossing the dirt tip road, when a full tub, running amain, ran into him.

McGOUGH Peter – 1904 – 02/09/1904 – Age 27 – Greenmoor, Sandstone Quarry Quarrier, Exors. of R Siddall, Lancashire. Struck by an iron crow-bar, 6 feet long, and fell back on his head, fracturing his skull. A stone from two to three tons weight was being raised from its bed by a dog attached to a steam crane; a piece of the stone broke off liberating the dog, the stone dropped a foot, falling on the toe of the crow-bar being used to ease the stone.

McGOUGH William – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – Age 31 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas 168 killed. 7 Delacour Street Stanley.

McGOWAN John – 1903 – 22/10/1903 – Age 14 – Elemore Token boy, Hetton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He fell through a rail fence to the ground, 23 feet below, and was fatally injured.

McGOWAN John – 1907 – 09/05/1907 – Age 30 – Denaby Main Filler, Denaby and Cadeby Main Colliery Co. Ltd., Yorkshire. On November 16th, 1906, his mate was cutting ‘day beds’ or coal in the roof in a gateway and he was filling it. He was about nine feet behind his mate when a small piece of coal fell off the side and he was hit by it. He was removed to Denaby Hospital where it was thought he would soon recover but he died today.

McGOWAN Peter – 1901 – 16/12/1901 – Age 17 – Swinhill No.6 Miner, Darngavil Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When about to descend the shaft, from the pithead, the engineman started the engine the wrong way and overwound the cage out of which they fell down the shaft. Another man in the cage escaped. 2 killed.

McGOWAN William – 1907 – 08/10/1907 – Age 44 – Allanton Fireman, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was in front of a drawer, who was pushing a loaded tub outbye when he was overtaken and crushed by the tub, he died from his injuries 24 days later. The drawer was not aware that deceased was in front of him.

McGOWEN Farrel - 1907 - 23/05/1907 – Age 47 - Raisby Hill, Limestone Quarry Quarryman, Raisby Hill Limestone Co., Co.Durham. He was struck by a fall of stone from a back, and swept off the ledge on which he was working, into the Quarry bottom.

McGOWEN Patrick - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 26 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McGRAIL Mick - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 33 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McGRAIL Patrick - 1904 - 02/10/1904 – Age 42 - Victoria Metalman, Victoria Colliery Co. Ltd., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was travelling up the haulage road (endless rope) when the lashing chain broke and the full tubs, in running back, fatally injured him before he got to a manhole.

McGRATH John - 1902 - 10/02/1902 – Age 45 - Bold Daywageman, Collins Green Colliery Co., St Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased and another person were engaged repairing the haulage downbrow and when they were putting a stretcher bar across the road a portion of side gave way crushing the deceased.

McGRATH John - 1904 - 04/06/1904 – Age 70 - Victoria, Slate Quarry Foreman, Victoria Slate Co. Ltd., Tipperary, Ireland. Fell while descending steps into the Quarry, 100 feet.

McGRATH John - 1908 - 18/08/1908 – Age 37 - Maypole Contractor, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of firedamp and coal dust. 75 killed.

McGRATH Joseph - 1906 - 15/05/1906 – Age 14 - Ouston Pony driver, North Walbottle Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Deceased, who had only been employed at the colliery for a fortnight, was driving 4 loaded tubs from a flat to the landing, and was sitting on the left side of the limbers. The road rises slightly outbye and was in good order. Another driver was walking a few yards in front, showing him the way as he was new to the work. This lad heard a noise behind, and looking round found deceased's light was out; he went back and found the pony and tubs had come to a stand, he saw that the first two tubs were off the way, and that deceased was lying partly under the first tub with one of its wheels against his neck, and his head jammed against a prop. The iron bow of the limbers had broken on the side where deceased had sat. A blacksmith at the inquest stated that the limbers appeared to be about 3 years old, that the iron was Waverley iron, a good brand, and that the section of the metal at the fracture was 1.25 inches by 0.75 inches. He further stated that there was no sign of burnt metal at the fracture, but that all iron is apt to become brittle, and he thought the limbers may have been subject to a sudden strain or blow. An examination of the fracture showed that the iron was partly crystalline. The Local Inspectors reported that they had found the way all right, and said ‘accident totally due to hauliers breaking at the bow.'

McGRAW William – 1909 – 05/07/1909 – Age 19 – Ballogie Drawer, CB Balfour, Fife. While pushing away a loaded tub from a face, deceased put one foot against a prop, supporting the roof, which came apart allowing part to fall upon him.

McGREAVEY Peter – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – Age 18 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 1 Manx Street, Stanley.

McGREAVY James – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – Age 16 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 1 Manx Street, Stanley.

McGREE John – 1901 – 24/04/1901 – Age 15 – Princess Haulage hand, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was sent to empty bricks out of a tub which was placed near a wheel around which a haulage rope was passing. The haulage rope caught him and took him round the wheel fatally injuring him. He succumbed to the injuries on the 27th inst. Cause, want of care and thought on the part of the person in charge.

McGREGOR Duncan – 1909 – 03/08/1909 – Age 18 – Wingate Grange Putter, Wingate Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. This youth, with two others, went into a broken lift to hew after finishing their ordinary work. They had no right to do anything of the kind. He was killed by a stone which fell in the goaf; it is certain therefore that he had not been content to hew in the face but had gone up the side of the lift to pull off loose coal. The accident occurred at 3.30 pm., or just about the time work ceased for the day. The deputy at the kist had thus not had time to miss the youths.

McGREGOR James – 1908 – 16/11/1908 – Age 15 – Boldon Screener, Harton Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Crushed between trucks at screens.

McGREGOR Robert – 1909 – 18/02/1909 – Age 28 – Longrigg Waggon shifter, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased had run some loaded wagons forward from a hopper and was bringing another forward behind them. He had a "trig" laid to stop it and, forgetting apparently the loaded wagons, he was bending down watching the last one, coming on to the "trig" when his head was caught and he was killed instantaneously.

McGUGAN David – 1903 – 07/05/1903 – Age 19 – Woodhall No.1 Drawer, Barr and Higgins, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on engine dook.

McGUIGAN Henry – 1908 – 27/06/1908 – Age 38 – Earnock No.1 Brusher, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while brushing it and while preparing to set a prop.

McGUIGAN James – 1906 – 30/01/1906 – Age 45 – Roman Camp Oil Shale Labourer, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. There are two levels at the shaft on the surface, one for shale the other, 10 feet above, for debris at the former, there are gates at the entrance to the shaft while at the latter a policeman covered the mouth. At the lower level the loaded tubs are taken off the cages at the south side of the shaft and the empty tubs put on at the north side. A loaded tub of debris was raised to the upper level and deceased, who was at the lower level, had instructions to put an empty tub on the cage as soon as it descended. He accordingly passed to the north side with an empty tub, opened the gate and pushed it forward to the open shaft before the cage had reached the level, and the tub and he were precipitated to the bottom, a distance of 50 fathoms.

McGUIGAN Thomas – 1907 – 16/03/1907 – Age 32 – Tannochside No.1 Boiler fireman, Archibald Russell Ltd., Lanarkshire. In some unexplained manner he was run over by the front waggon of two which he was shunting.

McGUIGAN Thomas – 1907 – 18/09/1907 – Age 33 – Woodhall No.1 Fireman, Barr and Higgins, Lanarkshire. Caught by the toothed wheels of a coal cutting machine which was not fenced.

McGUINNES James – 1907 – 03/09/1907 – Age 42 – Auchinraith No.2 Miner, Merry and Cunninghame Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at working face.

McGUINNES Richard – 1902 – 28/04/1902 – Age 24 – Seghill Hewer, Joseph Laycock and Co., Northumberland. Occurred in broken workings in the Blake seam which is about 6 feet thick with a stone band 16 inches thick in the centre of the Seam. The deceased was kirving in the band when the top coal fell on him. Sprags should have been set. The deputy was present when the accident happened.

McGUIRE John – 1905 – 06/11/1905 – Age 36 – Newbattle Miner, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was about to take it down when it fell and crushed him against a prop.

McGUIRE Michael – 1904 – 26/08/1904 – Age 27 – Eddlewood No.3 Pony driver, John Watson Ltd., Lanarkshire. He was crushed in some unexplained way between hutches and the roof.

McGUIRK Michael – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed.

McGURK James – 1901 – 24/07/1901 – Age 37 – Auchinraith No.1 Bottomer, Merry and Cuninghame Ltd., Lanarkshire. While descending in the cage with other six men the cage in some unexplained manner left the slides and they fell out. 2 killed.

McGURK John – 1908 – 26/08/1908 – Age 23 – Orbiston No.3 Brusher, Summerlee Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. By removing props, thus leaving at the working face an exposed area of roof greater than what the Special Rules allowed, the roof fell on him.

McGURRELL Jonathan – 1908 – 06/11/1908 – Age 53 – Lumley No.3 Labourer, Lambton Collieries Ltd., Co.Durham. He fell off a scaffold, 21 feet to the ground, when carrying a hod of bricks. The scaffold appeared to be in good order and firm. He was a careful man and it was daylight, 9.30 am., when he fell. He must have overbalanced himself.

McHENRY John – 1905 – 16/01/1905 – Age 15 – Bold No.3 Haulage hand, Collins Green Colliery Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The five persons were killed and thirteen injured in an overwinding accident whilst they were descending the shaft. The cage went beyond the usual point and struck a scaffold below. 5 killed.

McHUGH Edward – 1906 – 21/05/1906 – Age 50 – Seathwaite Tarn, Whinstone Quarry Labourer, William Kennedy Ltd., Lancashire. Blasting accident. 3 killed.

McHUGH J. – 1902 – 01/12/1902 – Age 15 – Glass Houghton Driver, WM Wood, Yorkshire. Crushed between the buffers of waggons which were being slowly moved by two men who were unaware that deceased was passing between wagons.

McHUGH John – 1904 – 08/10/1904 – Age 38 – Peelwood Collier, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Whilst repairing in a level, 190 yards from the face, from between two slips which ought to have been seen and temporary support provided. Died 10th October. (Good roof)

McHUGH Michael – 1902 – 14/04/1902 – Age 18 – Nook Labourer, Astley and Tyldesley Collieries Ltd., Lancashire. Crushed between buffers of waggons whilst standing where he had no work to do. Standing between buffers of stationary waggons. Two full waggons being lowered from the dirt shoot got beyond the control of the attendant and ran against the stationary waggons. An alarm was given and deceased was coming out when the buffers jammed together and crushed him.

McILVENNEY James – 1906 – 17/09/1906 – Age 35 – Carnock No.1 Miner, Alloa Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. After lighting the fuse of a gunpowder shot he retired but returned before it went off. It is thought that he was under the impression that a shot fired in an adjoining place was his and he returned, when his own shot went off on him.

McINALLY James – 1909 – 29/09/1909 – Age 40 – Dechmont No.1 Brusher, Archibald Russell Ltd., Lanarkshire. Overcome by fumes of arkite after 3 shots in a blind pit.

McINNES Thomas – 1905 – 03/03/1905 – Age 44 – Kenmuir Fireman, J Dunn and Stephen Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while repairing it. The stone was known to be dangerous.

McINTOSH Thomas – 1902 – 19/04/1902 – Age 32 – Benarty Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Explosion of firedamp.

McINTYRE Donald – 1901 – 16/05/1901 – Age 57 – Bonawe Granite Quarry Labourer, J and A Gardner and Co., Argyll. He was in a steamer from which coal was being unloaded at a wharf close to the Quarry. It was raised out of the hole in buckets by a jib crane placed on the wharf. A bucket, in being raised, caught on the hatch and the strain broke the crane jib which fell on him as he was guiding the bucket through the hatch.

McINTYRE John – 1909 – 08/02/1909 – Age 16 – Greenrigg Drawer, United Collieries Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was filling a tub with coal when the roof suddenly fell on him.

McINTYRE Peter – 1903 – 13/05/1903 – Age 36 – Trimdon Grange Hewer, Walter Scott Ltd., Co.Durham. On coming outbye he collapsed and afterwards died on the surface. At the inquest a verdict of 'death from syncope caused by powder shots owing to a temporary brattice.'

McINTYRE William – 1900 – 11/04/1900 – Age 40 – Auchenharvie No.5 Miner, Glengarnock Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Run over by runaway hutches on a self acting incline when travelling up to his working place.

McKANE James – 1907 – 04/07/1907 – Age 19 – Hamilton Palace Pony driver, Bent Colliery Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While walking in front of his pony and a race of full hutches, owing to the want of snibbles he was overtaken by the hutches and crushed against the side of the road.

McKAY George – 1908 – 11/05/1908 – Age 30 – Bothwell Castle No.3 Repairer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp ignited by a defective gauze in the lamp which was inadvertently taken into the mine by the fireman after another fireman had broken the top of the gauze in the lamp-room and had placed it on a shelf. The gas is supposed to have accumulated owing to the closing of an airway by a fall. 2 killed.

McKAY John – 1901 – 23/04/1901 – Age 21 – Craighead No.2 Drawer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while taking in an empty hutch.

McKECHNIE Duncan – 1902 – Age 02/07/1902 – Age 52 - Ardishaig, Whinstone Quarry Owner, Duncan McKechnie, Argyll. He lit the fuse of a gunpowder shot which went off when he had retired two or three yards.

McKEE William – 1909 – 05/02/1909 – Age 29 – Castlecary Fireclay Miner, John G Stein and Co., Stirling. Deceased was laying rails in his road, when a piece of fireclay fell from the side upon him.

McKEENAN John – 1902 – 30/05/1902 – Age 22 – Gateside Labourer, Flemington Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Caught by a runaway hutch at the foot of an incline from the pithead.

McKENNA Frank – 1908 – 07/05/1908 – Age 19 – Priestners Sinker, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Fell down the shaft from mouthing, part way down with others preparing to change from winding coal from 7 feet seam, to sinking the shaft to the Trencherbone. A drop table had been lowered to cover the middle portion, and owing to the guides this required supplementing by side pieces. One side had been covered and one piece put down on the other side. Deceased was standing on the table, when last seen, about to place the finishing covering piece, either he slipped or stumbled and went feet first through a space of 12 inches in width, falling to the bottom of the shaft, 187 yards.

McKENNA Martin – 1908 – 20/11/1908 – Age 29 – Kingseat Coal Cutter, John Irvine and Sons, Fife. Killed by machinery.

McKENNA Patrick – 1904 – 15/09/1904 – Age 23 – Clydesdale Brusher, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof from brushing face.

McKENNA Patrick – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – Age 26 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 34 Joicey Square Stanley.

McKENNA Phillip – 1905 – 24/05/1905 – Age 17 – Brandon Assistant onsetter, Strakers and Love, Co.Durham. He was in the cage re-railing a derailed tub when the cage was lifted and he, in falling out of the cage, was crushed against the shaft framing. A signal for the cage to move was not given but both the banksman and the engineman say they received one.

McKENNA William – 1903 – 23/03/1903 – Age 67 – South Derwent Shifter, South Derwent Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died 19th February, 1904. Deceased, a weakly man, was injured by a fall of band stone in the Hutton seam on the 23rd March, 1903. The accident which was not considered serious and was not reported to me. He only worked one day, the 15th June, 1903 afterwards. An inquest was held after a post-mortem examination and medical evidence by two doctors ascribed death to chronic bronchitis and cardiac disease but neither doctor could affirm positively that the accident had accelerated death. The Jury returned a verdict in accordance with medical evidence.

McKENNA Partick – 1909 – 16/02/1909 – Age 26 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 34 Joicey Square Stanley.

McKENSIE Duncan – 1901 – 15/11/1901 – Age 47 – Culloden Moor Sandstone Quarry Quarryman, George Geddes, Inverness. Deceased and some others were removing tirring, the average depth of the face being 10 feet. The foreman examined the brow and failed to observe any crack or other indications of danger. A few minutes afterwards a mass of sand and clay fell completely burying deceased and killing him instantaneously.

McKENZIE Robert – 1900 – 10/09/1900 – Age 60 – Kirkhill Miner, Kirkhill Colliery Co., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place.

McKENZIE Walter – 1901 – 09/08/1901 – Age 47 – Cliffe, Sandstone Quarry Quarrier, Cliffe Brick and Terra Cotta Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Explosion of gunpowder shot missed fire and was being drilled out.

McKENZIE William – 1905 – 24/07/1905 – Age 12 – Golf Course, Quarry Caddie Nairn Golf Club, Nairn. Deceased with others was attempting to recover a golf ball from an old Quarry filled with water when he slipped in and was drowned.

McKEOWN Audley – 1909 – 04/06/1909 – Age 60 – Greenfield No.2 Miner, Archibald Russell Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place, where supports were only 3 feet 3 inches from coal face.

McKEOWN John – 1902 – 24/10/1902 – Age 45 – Bothwell Castle No.2 Fireman, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Whilst he was crossing a haulage road a runaway hutch caught him.

McKEOWN John – 1903 – 01/07/1903 – Age 15 – Cowpen Engine rope attendant, Cowpen Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Deceased attended a short subsidiary endless rope haulage near the shaft, and his duty was to stand in a manhole, to which point the empty tubs gravitated and attach them to the rope which ran underneath them by short lashing chains, while so engaged he appears to have gone further forward than usual and was crushed between the tub and the side of the road. The manager promised to add more room at the side.

McKEY John – 1903 – 09/05/1903 – Age 27 – Carfin No.6 Joiner, William Dixon Ltd., Lanarkshire. When pinching a plank from off a scree the pinch slipped and struck him behind the ear. He worked till 18th May when erysipelas set in and he died on the 20th.

McKILLOP James – 1905 – 19/05/1905 – Age 27 – Clyde-Backmuir No.2 Miner, Wilsons and Clyde Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. He either fell of flung himself down a blind pit under the effects of fumes from an underground fire.

McKINLAY John – 1906 – 03/08/1906 – Age 72 – Blantyre Gatekeeper, William Dixon Ltd., Lanarkshire. When standing at his post at a level crossing he was run into by a cyclist who lost control of his machine.

McKINLAY William – 1906 – 10/12/1906 – Age 23 – Wallyford Miner, Edinburgh Collieries Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was holing in the bottom coal when the head coal suddenly burst and a part fell upon him.

McKINNEY Annie – 1905 – 16/08/1905 – Age 11 – Whitehaven Schoolgirl, Whitehaven Colliery Co., Cumberland. The coal from the Croft pit is taken by a locomotive to an incline, down which the wagons are run to the harbour. The road inclines a little from the pit. A train of 18 loaded wagons was being taken to the incline and in some way the last wagon became uncoupled and deceased, who was trespassing on the railway collecting coal that had fallen from trains, had not noticed the uncoupled wagon, which followed the train run by gravity and she was caught by it. The coupling is a chain and some of the couplings were not in very good order. Female.

McLACHLAN George – 1909 – 05/08/1909 – Age 27 – Prestongrange Drawer, Summerlee Iron Co. Ltd., Haddington. While re-railing a loaded tub he sprained his back, and died as a result three mouths afterwards.

McLACHLAN John – 1906 – 10/03/1906 – Age 55 – Bannockburn No.3 Pump attendant, Alloa Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. In some unknown manner he fell to the pit bottom either from the cage or from the entrance to a steam pump placed in the shaft.

McLACKIE Michael jnr. – 1909 – 06/10/1909 – Age 25 – Gardrum Miner Carron Co., Stirling. Deceased was holing his coal, when the roof suddenly fell upon him.

McLAREN Daniel – 1909 – 04/10/1909 – Age 28 – Castlecarry fireclay Bottomer, John G Stein and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was bottoming at a mid working and after the cage arrived, he opened the gate which fences the shaft, and took off the empty tub. Having placed the tub in an empty roadway, he got behind the loaded tub and pushed it forward towards the cage, but the cage had gone and he and tub were precipitated to the bottom of the shaft. The engineman had not pinned the drum brake down and the engine moved away.

McLAREN John – 1905 – 29/08/1905 – Age 45 – Allanton No.1 Miner, William Barr and Sons, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place. It is doubtful if the props were set, as required by the regulations. 2 killed.

McLAREN John – 1908 – 12/11/1908 – Age 28 – Lochore Fireman, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Three shots were prepared and charged with Saxonite in a stone mine, and the fuse used was Bickfords Patent Igniter. The fuses were lighted in the usual way by means of the authorised implement. As the fireman left the face he remarked that one tube had not lit, and in the interval of waiting he prepared another tube when two shots had exploded, he and Wells returned to the face when the shot exploded, killing the latter instantly and causing injuries to the former, which resulted in his death next day. 2 killed.

McLAREN Richard – 1905 – 29/08/1905 – Age 19 – Allanton No.1 Miner, William Barr and Sons, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof in working place. It is doubtful if props were set as required by the regulations. 2 killed.

McLAUCHLIN William – 1900 – 03/10/1900 – Age 21 – Broxburn Oil Shale Miner, Broxburn Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was working off some loose shale at the face of a five yard room in a 6 feet seam when about 1.5 cwt of the shale came away unexpectedly from some lypes and struck him on the head causing injuries which terminated fatally immediately afterwards.

McLAUGHLAN Patrick - 1903 - 10/08/1903 – Age 35 - Blackhill No.9 Brusher, Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while enlarging it for an airway.

McLAUGHLIN Joseph - 1908 - 28/10/1908 – Age 30 - Prestongrange Miner, Summerlee Iron Co. Ltd., Haddington. Deceased was coming up a dook on a rake of tubs, when he fell off and was struck by the tubs.

McLAUGHLIN Thomas - 1902 - 02/05/1902 – Age 44 - Mosside Miner, Gavin Paul and Sons Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased was taking a cut off the inbye end of a stoop in the seam, 5 feet 7 inches in thickness dipping 1 in 8. He had holed the nose to a depth of from 3 feet to 4 feet and was in the act of tapping the coal when a block 3 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet 2 inches came away and rolled over him killing him almost instantly. The coal fell from a foul lype the existence of which was known. No gibs or holing props appeared to have been set.

McLEAN Isaac John - 1908 - 15/08/1908 – Age 15 - Moss Bay, Iron Ore Loco. Fireboy, Moss Bay Hemitite Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., Cumberland. While assisting to shunt waggons he sat on a brake lever and was jerked off.

McLEAN John - 1900 - 18/04/1900 – Age 24 - Lathalmond (Quarry) Quarryman, Fife County Council, Fife. Deceased men and four other Quarrymen, who were all more or less injured, were charging a number of holes drilled in whin rock with gelignite and which were to be fired by electricity. One hole was charged and they were engaged charging the second, which was 10 feet deep and 2.2 inches diameter and was nearly horizontal. Three cartridges of gelignite together side by side were being pushed into the hole by means of a wooden rod when they exploded. The explosive was somewhat hard and no warming pan was in use. 2 killed.

McLEAN John - 1901 - 25/12/1901 – Age 40 - Gilbertsfield Labourer, Cambuslang Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When leaning upon a gangway railing it gave way and he fell upon the rails a distance of 20 feet, and was run over by a wagon.

McLEAN John - 1905 - 20/11/1905 – Age 58 - Simpsonland No.2 Miner, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal. He failed to stand clear of a cut of coal which his neighbour was wedging down.

McLEAN John - 1906 - 21/03/1906 – Age 30 - Armadale Roadsman, United Collieries Ltd., Linlithgow. A fall occurred on the main haulage road, during the night, and deceased and others were engaged redding it with a view to make repairs when a large stone from behind the area of the fall came away swinging out the crown which supported it fatally crushing both men. 2 killed.

McLEAN Joseph Forster - 1905 - 16/07/1905 – Age 28 - Bebside Deputy, Bebside Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. An extension of a main and tail rope engine plane had been completed in the Bensham seam and a trail set of empty tubs was being taken inbye but had not reached the new road when the tail rope, instead of running on one of the new hanging sheaves on the extension was running between the sheave and one of the iron hangers and a socket on the rope unable to pass caused extra strain which displaced a tail rope sheave at the beginning of the extension and the sheave and framework pulled forward, drew props under iron girders supporting the roof and a heavy fall of stone took place and caught deceased men who had stepped aside near the sheave while the trial set was run. The two hangers of the tail rope sheave where the socket caught was bent outbye. The tail rope either at the time of the fall or immediately afterwards drew at another socket further outbye. The displaced sheave was 4 feet diameter and was placed with its axis vertical between a wood framework next the floor, the framework consisted of two pieces of timber, 7 feet 8.5 inches high and 11 inches deep fixed 18 inches apart. One end of this framework was let into a pack wall and a prop was driven up between it next the pack the other framework was bolted to a stay set about 1 foot square in front of it and let a few inches into the roof and floor. The tail rope sheave where the socket caught was 4.25 inches wide and the space between was 4.75 inches. The two deputies were killed on the spot, the fitter was taken out alive but he died the same day. The Local Inspectors were at the inquest. One of them being a relative of the deceased Henry Grand, his evidence was not taken the other stand he had examined the place and came to the conclusion that it had been a pure accident. It appeared that the Local Inspectors had examined the mine on the Thursday before the accident, and had passed the new sheave but had not noticed it particularly. 3 killed.

McLEAN Robert – 1901 – 10/12/1901 – Age 45 – Cornshilloch No.2 Repairer, Archibald Russell, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on horse road while redding a previous fall.

McLEAN Thomas – 1906 – 04/05/1906 – Age 15 – Duddingston Oil Shale Haulier, Oakbank Oil Co. Ltd., Linlithgow. Deceased’s duties were to detach the empty tubs from the endless rope-chain attachment; he tried to attach the chain to a loaded tub, contrary to orders, when he was overtaken by another loaded tub coming up from another bench and dragged some distance, receiving injuries which terminated fatally two hours later.

McLEAN Thomas – 1907 – 16/08/1907 – Age 31 – Minto Coal Cutter, Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. A coal cutting machine had holed up to a hitch, and the roof was at once liberated, and a large mass fell upon deceased, and he was killed instantly.

McLEAN William – 1906 – 12/12/1906 – Age 46 – Rosie Miner, Weymss Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was lifting a loaded tub, which had left the rails and in doing so he slipped and fell, injuring his side. He continued to work at irregular intervals for some time afterwards but eventually became very ill and died on 10th August, 1907.

McLEAN William – 1909 – 13/03/1909 – Age 29 – Swinhill No.2 Fireman, Darngavil Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of roof on road while repairing it.

McLEER Joseph – 1907 – 28/07/1907 – Age 23 – Over Dalserf No.2 Brusher, Brand and Co., Lanarkshire. He entered a place, seemingly by mistake, in which the fireman had found gas, and which he had instructed the men not to enter, and ignited the gas with his naked light.

McLELLAN Alexander – 1909 – 08/06/1909 – Age 29 – Auchencruvie No.1 Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Fall of roof in working place or near it.

McLELLAND Andrew – 1906 – 17/01/1906 – Age 60 – Altonhill No.1 Sinker, J and R Howie Ltd., Ayrshire. While the overman was lowering a plumb line the iron nut on the end of the line, having been insecurely fastened by him, came off, fell down the shaft and struck deceased on the head.

McLENNAN George jnr. – 1907 – 26/08/1907 – Age 24 – Neilston No.3 Chain runner, United Collieries Ltd., Stirling. When riding in front of a full race, being drawn up an incline to the surface, he seems to have fallen over and got run over by the hutches.

McLEOD Daniel – 1902 – 01/12/1902 – Age 33 – East Plean No.3 Roadsman, Plean Colliery Co. Ltd., Stirling. The deceased appears to have gone into a disused place for a private purpose, when his naked light ignited firedamp.

McLEOD David – 1905 – 27/09/1905 – Age 65 – Lumphinnans Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was sitting at his breakfast when the roof suddenly fell on him. A hitch had been met with and a part was "won out" inside, and the roof fell away from the "vees."

McLEOD Murdoch – 1906 – 06/01/1906 – Age 31 – Tannochside No.3 Haulageman, Archibald Russell Ltd., Lanarkshire. He was, along with a fireman, repairing an airway when the roof gave way and fell on him.

McLEOD Thomas – 1902 – 24/04/1902 – Age 34 – Cowdenbeath Brusher, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased were brushing a level when a large fall of roof took place off the face. There was a considerable quantity of timber set which swung by the fall. 2 killed.

McLEOD William – 1901 – 03/09/1901 – Age 44 – Garturk, Britton Pitheadman, William Dixon Ltd., Lanarkshire. When pinching forward a full wagon from the scree another two wagons followed and he was crushed between the buffers.

McLOUGHLIN Michael – 1902 – 16/09/1902 – Age 33 – Fortrigg Miner, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased had just begun to hole his coal, when a stone fell from between the face and a building and killed him instantaneously. The stone fell away from clay joints.

McLUCKIE James – 1908 – 28/11/1908 – Age 30 – Redding Miner, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Deceased and his neighbour were driving a new road through waste and while holing in the packed ground a large stone suddenly fell and instantly killed him.

McLUSKIE William – 1907 – 02/12/1907 – Age 23 – Newbattle Brusher, Lothian Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased and his neighbour were charging a hole with compressed gunpowder, in pellets, and while doing so, a spark from his neighbour’s lamp, which was in his cap, fell on a pellet as it was being handed to deceased to put into this hole.

McMAHON Frank – 1904 – 11/04/1904 – Age 32 – Hattonrigg No.4 Bottomer, Summerlee & Mossend Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When cleaning the cage seat the cage came down on him.

McMAHON James – 1909 – 15/08/1909 – Age 42 – Auchengeich No.2 Roadsman, James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Shock of electricity from fault in cable which he had coiled up in his hand. He was not authorised to handle cable.

McMAHON John – 1908 – 11/05/1908 – Age 38 – Douglas Bank Contractor, Rosebridge and Douglas Bank Collieries Co., Wigan, Lancashire. They were engaged roofing down in the Arley mine, and when he attempted to knock out a prop under the kench, instead of using the gablock and chain, when he slipped, and the roof fell upon him.

McMAHON Patrick – 1904 – 31/08/1904 – Age 51 – Orrell Labourer, Orrell Colliery Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was assisting the platelayers in taking a trolley of railway sleepers down an incline and in attempting to get off, when the trolley was in motion, he appears to have stumbled and his left leg got run over. He succumbed to the injuries received Sept. 2nd. 1904.

McMAHON William – 1908 – 12/03/1908 – Age 35 – Auchincruvie No.2 Drawer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. While holing coal it gave way and fell upon him. It displaced a sprag set to support it.

McMASTER Frank - 1900 - 01/08/1900 – Age 19 - Crosshow Hewer, Dearham Coal Co., Cumberland. Inquest attended. The deceased firing a gelatine dynamite shot in the canch and after lighting the fuse he waited too long thinking the fuse was not burning. He should have retired to a place of safety after lighting the fuse which was probably slightly defective.

McMASTER James - 1904 - 22/02/1904 – Age 70 - Ladylands Miner, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. After quarrelling with his son he went to the setting tank and threw himself in. Suicide by drowning.

McMENEMY Daniel - 1900 - 06/08/1900 – Age 53 - Greenside No.1 Sinker, United Collieries Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. A stone, which apparently came off the side of the shaft in process of being sunk, fell upon him while working in the bottom. Another man was injured.

McMENEMY James - 1903 - 16/12/1903 – Age 46 - Gilbertfield No.2 Repairer, United Collieries Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal from side of road while enlarging it.

McMILLAM Alexander – 1908 – 02/12/1908 – Age 72 – Kenmuir No.2 Stone picker, Glasgow Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. When turning a hutch on a plate placed on an insecurely fenced gangway he slipped and fell below the top rail to the ground, a distance of 20 feet.

McMILLAN Robert – 1906 – 20/12/1906 – Age 21 – Dalzell & Broomside Coal cutter, Wishaw Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased had worked a double shift, and when he arrived at the mine bottom, after his work was over, the oversman was sitting on the first tub of the loaded haulage rake to be raised to the surface; he asked and obtained permission to ride with him, and while the rake was moving up the plane his head came in contact with the roof at a low part and his spine was fractured, death ensuing 26 hours later. The mine starts from the surface dipping 1 in 3 most of the way, and the system of haulage is by a rope on a drum, and while the loaded rake ascends the empty descends: speed about 4 miles an hour.

McMULLEN William – 1908 – 15/07/1908 – Age 40 – Gartsherrie, Gartcloss Miner James Nimmo and Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. While holing, the coal and midstone gave way and fell upon him. His fellow workmen stated that they had just commenced to hole, but the coal broke over the solid.

McMURDO Alexander – 1907 – 03/09/1907 – Age 48 – Herbertshire No.3 Miner, R Addie and Sons Collieries Ltd., Stirling. Fall of roof at working face.

McMURDO Robert – 1908 – 09/01/1908 – Age 28 – Blantyre No.4 Brusher, William Dixon Ltd., Lanarkshire. When putting in a building at a roadhead and after knocking out at least one prop the roof gave way and fell upon him. Three props were afterwards found under the fall but it is doubtful whether or not these had been displaced by the fall.

McMURRAY Daniel – 1909 – 04/08/1909 – Age 27 – Lumphinnans Miner, Fife Coal Co. Ltd., Fife. Deceased was holing when coal fell upon him, he died five weeks later from his injuries. There were no sprags up to the face.

McMURRAY John – 1909 – 01/05/1909 – Age 19 – Pennyvenie No.1 Miner, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Fall of roof in working place near the side of an old road. 2 killed.

McMURRAY Peter – 1909 – 01/05/1909 – Age 67 – Pennyvenie No.1 Miner, Dalmellington Iron Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. Fall of roof in working place near the side of an old road. 2 killed.

McNALLY James – 1903 – 31/07/1903 – Age 32 – Stockfield Labourer, Chamber Colliery Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Scalded by hot water, whilst cleaning out a culvert a quantity of burning shale fell into the water-course where the arch was broken down. Died 12th Aug.

McNALLY Thomas – 1904 – 20/03/1904 – Age 15 – Darngavill Coal picker, Darngavill Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. This boy was employed at the colliery, and on the Sunday evening he was about a pit which is only used for pumping while the boiler fireman was moving a waggon the boy got among the wheels and was run over.

McNALLY Thomas – 1908 – 20/02/1908 – Age 48 – Washington Glebe Stoneman, Washington Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Explosion of firedamp. 14 killed.

McNAUGHT John – 1909 – 16/12/1909 – Age 35 – Polmaise Nos 1&2 Machineman, Archibald Russell Ltd., Stirling. While working the controller of the coal-cutter he got electrocuted when leaning over the machine.

McNAUGHT Thomas – 1909 – 23/06/1909 – Age 14 – Bedlay Labourer, Wiliam Baird and Co., Lanarkshire. Caught by a runaway full hutch and pushed into creeper which was unfenced, and it caught him.

McNEIL Patrick – 1902 – 04/03/1902 – Age 22 – Usworth Pony putter, Johnasson Gordon and Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Died 13th April. While bringing a full tub from the face to his pony he improperly placed himself in front of it and was overcome and crushed against a prop. A drag was put in the wheels but it fell out.

McNEILL David – 1904 – 03/04/1904 – Age 65 – Wallyford Miner, Edinburgh Collieries Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased stepped on to a cut chain brae from his drawing road and was about to proceed down when he was overtaken by a loaded tub on the running on braes.

McNEILL William – 1909 – 26/05/1909 – Age 45 – Wallyford Brusher, Edinburgh Collieries Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased and two other brushers were about to set timber to a part of the roof just brushed, when a stone fell upon him and he was killed.

McNELLA Thomas – 1902 – 01/03/1902 – Age 21 – Shelton Deep Collier, Shelton Iron Steel and Coal Co. Ltd., Staffordshire. Fall of roof at working face in the Hard mine. The stone fell from a slip while he was preparing to set a post under it, close to the face.

McNESTRY John – 1909 – 16/02/09 – Age 22 – West Stanley, Owners of West Stanley Colliery, Co.Durham. Explosion of gas. 168 killed. 10 Ann St.

McNIVEN Duncan – 1907 – 22/01/1907 – Age 55 – Carnain, Whinstone Quarry Contractor, Islay District Committee, Argyll. When drilling out a shot, supposed to have been gelignite, and said to have missed fire two years previously, the charge ignited. Another man was injured.

McOLVIN William – 1900 – 19/12/1900 – Age 66 – Westwood Rolleywayman, Consett Iron Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. Everything pointed to this man having sat down by the side of an engine about midway between two refuge holes with his legs over one rail and gone to sleep and while in this position the empty set came in and caught him and dragged him some distance and crushed him to death.

McPAKE Thomas – 1903 – 17/12/1903 – Age 32 – Quarter Miner, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Stirling. Fall of roof in working place.

McPARLINE Michael – 1902 – 02/06/1902 – Age 17 – Heworth Pony putter, Heworth Coal Co. Ltd., Co.Durham. He died 8th June, 1902. Deceased received some injury to his arm on the 2nd June while lifting a tub on to the rails but he completed his shift and walked home. He was seen by three doctors who reported injury to his arm. He took ill on the 6th June and died on the 8th. A post mortem examination was made and the doctors reported at the adjourned inquest that death was due to congestion of the lungs the result of no accident.

McPHERSON Donald – 1906 – 07/07/1906 – Age 39 – Craigend Pitheadman, R Forrester and Co. Ltd., Fife. When the descending cage left the surface the gate which closed the opening stuck and deceased allowed it to remain leaving the side unprotected, when the ascending cage came to the surface he took off the loaded tub, and in bringing forward the empty tub he pushed it into the open side and fell into the shaft with the tub.

McPHERSON James – 1909 – 10/06/1909 – Age 23 – Callender Drawer, Callender Coal Co. Ltd., Stirling. Deceased was "backening" coal to the road, when a stone fell upon him; death resulted three weeks after.

McPHERSON John – 1906 – 14/11/1906 – Age 48 – Garriongill Miner, Coltness Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Deceased was taking off coal at the face when a stone fell from the roof and fatally crushed him. On the left-hand side was a, visible lype and the stone fell away from this and one inside which was invisible.

McPHERSON John – 1908 – 23/12/1908 – Age 53 – Auchincruvie Waggon trimmer, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. When crossing the rails at the screes he was run over by the railway company's brake van which was being run past the screes without any warning of its approach having been given.

McPHILLIP John – 1905 – 17/03/1905 – Age 22 – Niddrie Miner, Niddrie and Benhar Coal Co. Ltd., Edinburgh. Deceased was holing coal in a steep seam when it fell away and crushed him.

McPORTLAND Terance – 1903 – 20/08/1903 – Age 65 – Highouse Gate keeper, William Baird and Co. Ltd., Ayrshire. When attempting to open crossing gates he was run over by a Railway Co.'s runaway van.

McQUADE Patrick – 1908 – 06/03/1908 – Age 48 – Walker Hewer, Walker Coal Co. Ltd., Northumberland. Fall of roof stone at the working face.

McQUE Frank – 1908 – 09/06/1908 – Age 24 – Roddymoor Hewer, Pease and Partners Ltd., Co.Durham. This accident occurred at the face of a whole place in the Ballarat seam. He was seen at 2 pm. by the deputy and was then all right. As he did not come out to the kist at the usual time, viz., 3.45 pm., the deputy went inbye to look for him and found him lying under a fall of roof, dead. The stone had fallen from between two parallel slips running at right angles to the face. A plank, and a prop and headtree had been knocked out by the fall.

McQUEEN John – 1900 – 30/08/1900 – Age 50 – Silver Grey (Granite Quarry) Fireman, Scottish Granite Co. Ltd., Kirkcudbright. When standing on the face of a heap of debris superintending its removal a stone rolled down on him.

McQUEEN John – 1908 – 22/08/1908 – Age 55 – Bonawe, Granite Quarry Labourer, J and A Gardener and Co. Ltd., Argyll. While working at the foot of a heap of loose granite, dislodged by a big blast, a stone slipped down and caught him.

McQUEEN Robert – 1908 – 07/12/1908 – Age 50 – Dykehead Miner, Summerlee Iron Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Fall of coal while preparing to wedge it down.
