VAUGHAN Thomas - 1867 - 08/11/1867 – Age 23. Ferndale, David Davies and Son, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas through one of the deceased taking the top off his lamp and exposing a naked light. 178 killed.

VAUX George - 1863 - 21/07/1863 – Age 44 - Sinker. Bromilow Field, Kirkless Hall Coal and Iron Co., Gidlow Lane, Wigan, Lancashire. Explosion of gas.

VAUX Henry - 1864 - 01/07/1864 – Age 17 - Haulier. Glyn, Ebbw Vale Co., Pontypool, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp in the Rock Vein Coal in consequence of both doors being left open by the Haulier who was himself killed. The fresh air was thus entirely cut off from the face or the work in the heading. 4 killed.

VEITCH John - 1862 - 16/01/1862 – Age 21. New Hartley, Messrs. Carrs, Hartley, Durham. Entombment due to the breaking of an engine beam which fell down the single shaft. 204 killed.

VENABLES D. - 1868 - 29/07/1868 – Age 14 - Collier Boy. Eagle or Springfield, Eagle Colliery Co., West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Fall of coal in thick coal pit which was forced out of a pillar by a bump.

VERDON Patrick - 1869 - 07/05/1869 - Collier. Renishaw, CE Appleby, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Fall of roof.

VERNON John - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Talk o’th’ Hill, North Stafford Co., Newcastle, Staffordshire. Explosion of gas. 92 killed.

VERNON Joseph - 1861 - 11/06/1861 – Age 27 - Miner. Clay Cross, William Jackson and Partners, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Suffocated in the No.2 black shale pit in consequence of an inundation of water from old workings. Sealed him up for 22 days. 23 killed.

VICKERS W. - 1862 - 16/04/1862 – Age 22 - Pikeman. Cockshott, Aston and Shaw, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Injured by fall of coal in new mine 15th. About 2cwt. overhanging coal suddenly fell. Died this day.

VINCENT J. - 1869 - 05/10/1869 – Age 54 - Pikeman. Green Lane, J Baker, Walsall, Staffordshire. Injured 2nd by fall of coal and batt whist cutting the spurns out in thin mine. Died this day.

VINCENT Pricalla - 1860 - 25/05/1860 – Age 22 – Bankswoman. Netherend, Joseph King and Co., Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Fell down the shaft from the surface as she was pushing the skip in and wither got hooked or slipped in but as she was pregnant she was no doubt unable to disentangle herself. Female.

VIZARD James - 1860 - 01/12/1860. Black Vein, Risca Iron and Coal Co., Risca, Monmouth. Explosion of firedamp. This lamenatble calamity was occasioned by a sudden outburst of gas on most probably, a defective lamp. 142 persons, killed.

VOUGHT Joseph - 1860 - 02/03/1860. Burradon Colliery, Burradon, Durham. Explosion of gas. 76 killed. Single.

VOWLES John - 1864 - 05/02/1864 – Age 26 - Collier. Huish, Writhlington and Huish Co., Somerset. Whilst enlarging a main road about a ton of stuff burst off front of the side and killed him there and then. The Deputy had just left him when the mass fell and then a slip was perceived which was not previously visible.

VURGHAM Charles - 1866 - 10/07/1866 – Age 30 - Collier. Brookhall, Ditches, Forest of Dean, Gloucester. Fell down pit and was killed.
