PARKER Peter - 1868 - 02/07/1868 – Age 25 – Metalman. Cat Hole Colliery, Hargreaves, Ashworth and Co., Baxenden, Lancashire. A shot going off as it was being rammed. An iron, instead of a Copper or wooden rammer being used in getting the first part of the ramming bedded onto the wadding over the powder. Richard Hoyle said he was working in the Cat Hall Coal pit last Thursday about noon, along with the deceased. We had drilled a hole in the rock underneath, the coal for the purpose of blasting it. The deceased put in five charges full of powder. I gave the deceased some hay to put in after the powder. We then put up the spindle, and after that the deceased put in some dirt. The deceased held an iron rammer, and I struck it with a hammer, perhaps six times, when the powder exploded. The deceased I believe was killed instantly. We have no Copper rammers, or wooden ones, and we were working as normal. We were partners, and had this work to do by the yard. George Smith underlooker, left about twenty minutes before the explosion. Ann Parker, widow of the deceased deposed he has left me a child aged eight months old. The coroner, summed up; remarking that no blame should be attached to anyone, and the jury returned a verdict of "accidental death”. (Accrington Times).

PAYMAN Thomas - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

It must be borne in mind that he had no business whatever to be within the range of the fall.
