Mc LEAN John - 1888 - 22/03/1888 – Age 34 – Collier. Sutton Heath, Mrs FP Radley, St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made. He was working in a wide place. There were 6 inches of following stone on the coal and part of this with a foot of coal face fell on him. No holing had been done but the roof had weighted during the night and he appears to have neglected to sound it before commencing to fill.

MEADOWCROFT William (injured) - 1885 - 21/09/1885 – Age 37 – Breaksman. Bridgewater, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatal on colliery sidings his foot having caught against a check rail he stumbled and was run over by the waggon that he was letting down to make up a train. Attention was drawn by the jury to the advantage of coupling apparatus.

MEADOWS Peter - 1885 - 30/03/1885 – Age 14 – Dataler. Hindley Green, John Scowcroft and Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The boy was sent with his father who is an experienced timberer to put up two bars under some roof and whilst at work a stone suddenly fell on the boy who was filling a tub. The father said he examined the place before commencing.

This man was working a narrow place 9 feet wide, 7 feet high which was timbered within 3 feet 9 inches of the face after firing a shot the deceased and his two sons, who were working with him went into the face to dress the roof down the deceased had not time to lift his pick before a lump of ore fell and struck him on the back and injured his spine from which he died.

MENHET James - 1886 - 19/11/1886 – Age 54 – Miner. No.1 (metalliferous), Maryport Haematite Iron & Steel Co. Ltd., Pallaflat, Cumberland. Fall of ore. The deceased was engaged taking a slice off a pillar of ore and had 8 feet of ore in the roof next the sandstone. This ore, being of a crumbling nature, made a rush, and reeled all the timber out, burying the deceased.

MEREDITH John - 1887 - 08/07/1887 – Age 45 – Collier. River Level, Aberdare Works and Colliery’s Co. Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of clod from face which had been undermined 2ft. The deceased was about to take the clod down. Pillar and stall 7ft. seam.

MEREDITH John jnr. - 1889 - 30/05/1889 – Age 19 – Collier. Whitworth Drift, Tredegar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. Burned by an explosion of compressed powder caused by a spark from his naked light falling into the canister which was left open while charging a shot.

MEREDITH Lewis - 1889 - 16/01/1889 – Age 76 – Doorman. Darran, Rhymney Iron Co. Ltd., Bargoed, Glamorgan. While walking along the engine plane on his way to the shaft he was run over by the gang. He evidently did not notice that the trains were so near as the requisite manholes were provided and there was ample space for him to have walked at the side.

MEREDITH Moses - 1887 - 18/07/1887 – Age 14 – Shackler. Great Western, Great Western Colliery Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Crushed between two loaded trams while shackling on parting.

MEREDITH William - 1889 - 22/08/1889 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. Maritime, Maritime Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Crushed by pit cage descending on him. About 20 men and boys were waiting to ascend, when a journey was heard coming into the siding and in the confusion to get clear of the trams deceased was pushed into shaft.

MEREWEATHER ? - 1889 - 04/04/1889 – Age 30 – Collier. South Liberty, Ashton Vale Iron Co. Ltd., Bristol, Somerset. A fall of roof rock about 12 yards long, 3 yards wide, 2 to 3 feet thick on one side and feather-edged at the other, fell at the face of the coal from its size it would give no warning by sounding; it was released from a fault at the thick side and the timber set under it was crushed down. 3 killed.

MERRICK William Henry - 1885 - 18/06/1885 – Age 19 – Filler. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Lancashire. Fatal great explosion. 178 killed.

MERTON Alfred (injured) - 1888 - 01/11/1888 – Age 20 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Whilst being lowered in the gig appointed, for the purpose, the latter got too much way on and ran at a terrific pace to the bottom of the shaft severely shaking all the 16 men in the gig and necessitating the seven mentioned being medically attended to. It is very fortunate that the accident was not far more disastrous. I am inclined to attribute it in a great measure to the defective break arrangement. The break was actuated by a screw and extended half way round the fly wheel, but being shod with wrought iron and not under cover, became exceedingly slippery in wet weather. The engine man appears also to have lost his head and stated that in trying to put on steam against the engine when he found the gig was running too fast, he was unable to get the valve to act. It is right to mention that the whole arrangement was new and little experience had been gained in the working of it. If the road had not been in excellent order and the gig constructed of the strongest and best materials there is no doubt that the consequences would have been much more serious. 7 injured.

MEYRICK Robert - 1886 - 12/07/1886 – Age 18 – Collier. South Tunnel, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of coal while holing under it without sprags.

MICHAEL Owens - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 14 – Driver. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

MICHELL William - 1882 - 09/10/1882 – Age 25 – Shaftsman. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Deceased with five other men was riding up in the skip, from the 352 fathoms level, when the skip had nearly arrived at surface, it stopped for a moment, and deceased attempted to get out into the ladder road, as he was afraid of being caught by the night agent; the skip moving on, however, he was thrown in the shaft, fell to the 40 fathoms level, and was dashed to pieces, one of his arms being found below the 230 fathoms level.

MIDDLEBROOK Henry - 1885 - 05/05/1885 – Age 25 - Limestone blower. Daw End (limestone), Daw End Lime Co., Walsall, Staffordshire. Fatally injured by being blown from a ladder by premature explosion of a shot which he was charging.

MIDDLEHURST John - 1886 - 04/02/1886 – Age 32 - Dataler. Orrell, Orrell Coal and Cannel Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased pushed a tub into a staple pit when the cage was at the bottom and fell after it. There was no fence, with the exception of a cross bar 4ft. 8in. from the floor under which deceased passed.

MIDDLETON Edwin (injured) - 1880 - 24/09/1880 – Age 46 – Sinker. Ashton Moss, Ashton Moss Colliery Co., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Hurt. Struck off a scaffold by the ascending hoppet in the sinking shaft.

MIDDLETON H. - 1882 - 20/03/1882 – Age 26 – Loader. Victoria, Victoria Colliery Co., Tipton, Staffordshire. Fatally injured on February 27th. by fall of coal from side of a thick coal opening. Died this day.

MIDDLETON Thomas - 1889 - 20/06/1889 - Waggon repairer. Reservoir, Moira Colliery Co., Moira, Derbyshire. Crushed by a railway waggon whilst at work repairing waggons in the colliery sidings. Not employed by the Colliery Company.

MILES Thomas - 1885 – 03/09/1885 – Age 56 – Repairer. Cinder, J Lancaster and Co. Ltd., Monmouthshire. Fall of stone. He and another man were preparing to blast some stone near the pit bottom when it fell. Subsequent examination showed that two slips crossing each other caused the fall and possibly the stone had been shaken by previous shots.

MILES William - 1886 – 08/12/1886 – Age 62 – Waggon trimmer. Tylor’s, A Tylor and Co., Tylorstown, Glamorgan. Fell off a loaded waggon which was being drawn away from the screens by the locomotive.

MILES William - 1886 – 15/02/1886 – Collier. Abercarn, Abercarn Coal Co., Monmouth. Fall of top coal. A slant was found running along the face. The manager told him to be cautious and he at once proceeded to set a prop, but before he got it up the coal fell and killed him.

MILFORD Absolom (injured) - 1889 - 05/07/1889 – Age 47 – Miner. Gawton (metalliferous), Tavistock, Cornwall. A stage at the 95 fathom level fell on the man, while he was at work, inflicting slight injuries to his shoulders and hand.

MILKINS Benjamin - 1889 - 28/01/1889 – Age 23 – Collier. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co. (Henry Bennett), Bedminster, Somerset. An explosion of firedamp through the use of naked lights. The three men died within 21 hours from the effects of burns. The lad Roberts was found insensible in the horse road several hundred yards away suffering from the effects of afterdamp from which he died some days after without regaining consciousness. 3 killed.

MILL William (injured) - 1888 - 18/07/1888 – Age 21 – Timberman. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. While climbing a chain up a rise to get to his work the pin on which the chain was hanging, having been previously loosened by a shot, came out and the unfortunate man fell 9 fathoms with the chain in his hand. His leg was broken, and he was a good deal shaken. The Inspector happened to be present at the time of the accident.

MILLAR Alexander - 1888 - 21/06/1888 – Age 28 – Fireman. Drumchapel No.1, William Dixon Ltd., New Kirkpatrick, Kirkcudbright. While riding on self-acting incline the chain broke and caused a collision.

MILLARD James - 1886 - 10/09/1886 – Age 16 – Filler. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co., Somerset. Explosion of firedamp. 10 killed.

MILLER Andrew - 1889 - 04/11/1889 – Age 36 – Shotfirer. Hebburn, A Tyne Coal Co., Hebburn, Co. Durham. Burnt by blown out shot and died within a few days. 6 killed.

MILLER Fred (injured) - 1889 - 09/10/1889 - 19 – Miner. Phoenix, United (metalliferous), Liskeard, Cornwall. The men were sinking a new shaft and had just commenced boring a hole when an explosion took place injuring them severely about the head and face. Both were temporarily deprived of their sight. As there was no dynamite in the shaft and no hole had missed previously the accident was unaccountable to the agents but in my opinion was due to the exudation of nitro-glycerine from a hole previously exploded. 2 injured.

MILLER Geoffrey (injured) - 1885 - 16/02/1885 – Age 40 – Miner. Cow Lee Lane, Thomas H Seddon, Lancashire. Injured by a fall of stone which was being taken down at the face between the props and the coal a space of three and a half feet.

MILLER George - 1888 - 13/12/1888 – Age 67 – Wasteman. Binchester, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Auckland, Co. Durham. He felt unwell and went to sit down in the stable where he died from natural causes. Ventilation of place all right.

MILLER John (injured) - 1887 - 26/11/1887 – Miner. Clonbrock, Thomas Robson Queen’s Co., Ireland. Burned by the ignition of a small quantity of firedamp that had accumulated in a rise corner of an inner cut through from a lodge end where water partially interrupted the air current and there being no screen most of the air escaped without passing the place. The fireman it appeared had examined with a safety lamp but omitted trying in the corner. 2 injured.

MILLER John - 1883 - 28/04/1883 – Age 19 - Small runner. Pelton, Lord Dunsany and Partners, Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Crushed between small coal apparatus and a bunton, the tub had got off the way, and he got into the cage, to lift it on, when the engine started.

MILLER John L - 1880 - 08/09/1880 – Age 25 – Hewer. Seaham, Marquess of Londonderry, Sunderland, Co. Durham. Explosion of gas 164 killed.

MILLER Michael - 1880 - 15/09/1880 – Age 45 – Roadsman. Raith, Lady Lochgelly Iron and Coal Co., Auchterpool, Fife. While loading props, which had been taken out to allow the head coal to fall, the side fell. The props should have been placed outside the unsupported head coal. Stooping.

MILLER Peter (injured) - 1887 - 07/03/1887 – Age 24 – Waggoner. Ashton’s Field, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Rib broken by empty tubs which were caught by a passing train in a shunt as he was uncoupling.

MILLER Richard - 1885 - 03/08/1885 – Age 15 – Driver. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Injury to spine by fall of stone caused by pony drawing out some props while putting a tub back. Died on 5th.
