THOMAS Edward - 1881 - 03/11/1881 – Age 13 – Driver. Tudhoe, Weardale Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Spennymoor, Co. Durham. Attempting to get off tub head on to limmers, he slipped and fell before his set of tubs which ran over him.

THOMAS Edward - 1883 - 05/11/1883 – Age 23 – Miner. Pennerley (metalliferous). Fall sideways of a loose rock embedded in stuff lying on a stull which he was in the act of clearing down.

THOMAS Edward - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 23 – Rider. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

THOMAS Edward - 1888 - 26/06/1888 – Age 18 – Haulier. Cethin No.2, Crawshaw Bros., Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Found dead under tram loaded with stores. It was thought he had been riding on shafts and had fallen off.

THOMAS Elias - 1883 - 25/06/1883 – Age 24 – Collier. New Duffryn, Rhymney Iron Company, Rhymney, Glamorganshire. Explosion of gas 7 killed.

THOMAS Elisen (injured) - 1889 - 08/08/1889 – Age 22 – Quarryman. Llechwedd (slate). He tried to turn the reversing wheel of a sawing table with his foot instead of his hand and had the ankle caught and severely sprained. 7 weeks off.

THOMAS Evan - 1885 - 08/09/1885 – Age 62 – Collier. Coalbrook Vale, Coalbrook Vale Colliery Co., Monmouthshire. Injured by a fall of stone and died on the 9th. He was holing and had just tried the coal, which seemed strong but it immediately fell upon him.

THOMAS Evan - 1887 - 24/12/1887 – Age 20 – Collier. Llwynapia, Glamorgan Coal Co., Llwynapia, Glamorgan. Fall of clod from face of a heading (narrow) which was being driven through disturbed ground in advance of the longwall faces. There were 2 feet overhanging and it had been deemed safe without sprags.

THOMAS Francis - 1884 - 17/12/1884 – Age 25 – Miner. St. Just United (metalliferous), St. Just United Mining Co., St. Just, Cornwall. Explosion of hole, charged with powder, that deceased was tamping with an iron bar.

THOMAS Frederick Charles - 1888 – Age 18 – Shaftman. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. While engaged in doing repairs in Stray Park shaft, he fell through a sollar from which he had removed two boards the day previously. He had evidently forgotten they were removed and stepped out of the ladder into the hole. The deceased was a steady man and a good workman, and would not have left the hole uncovered had anybody been using the shaft besides himself. Occurred in October.

THOMAS George (injured) - 1888 - 01/03/1888 – Age 40 – Miner. Peelwood Hall, Tyldesley Coal Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Thigh broken by coal falling from a slip.

THOMAS George - 1880 - 31/12/1880 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Blaenclydach, Forest Iron Co., Ton-y-pandy, Glamorgan. Fall of roof 2 killed.

THOMAS Giles - 1882 - 05/04/1882 – Age 38 – Collier. Ynisfais, Troedyrhiw Coal Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fell upon his mandril when walking along a heading.

THOMAS Gwillym - 1888 - 13/03/1888 – Age 13 - Collier boy. Ferndale No.1, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. Fall of coal which was known to be heavy but not spragged at end of stall. The father of the boy was filling a tram and had told deceased not to go to this place. Two feet nine seam, 4ft. thick. long wall.

THOMAS Henry - 1883 - 15/08/1883 – Age 17 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Wheal Agar Mining Co., Redruth, Cornwall. Fracture of the capstan rope which was being used to draw the men to surface. 12 killed.

THOMAS Henry - 1884 - 08/11/1884 – Age 27 – Hitcher. Abercarn, Abercarn Coal Co., Monmouth. Fell into sump. He was walking backwards pulling an empty tram towards the pit, when his foot slipped on the flat sheet, and he fell into the pit, and pulled the tram on top of him.

THOMAS Henry - 1886 - 01/09/1886 – Age 40 – Repairer. Aberman, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Abermanan, Glamorgan. Fall of coal at the face of his place which in consequence of weighting on the previous day he was engaged repairing.

THOMAS Henry - 1886 - 09/09/1886 – Age 15 – Trammer. Dean Lane, Bedminster Coal Co., Somerset. Injured by an explosion of firedamp and died on the 19th.

THOMAS Hicks - 1889 - 01/07/1889 – Age 30 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Deceased and Grenfell were engaged in driving the east level at the 204 fathom level while another pair of men were driving an end west at the same level. Both ends were in about 12 fathoms from the shaft. Just previously to the accident eight holes were fired at the level three in the east end, and five in the west end. For safety the men had retired up the shaft a little way while the explosions took place. They counted seven reports only but after waiting a few minutes they supposed that two holes must have gone off simultaneously making only one report and therefore deceased and his comrade returned to their end when the remaining hole exploded killing Thomas on the spot and inflicting cuts and other injuries on Grenfell. Had the Special Rule's, which prescribe that where there is any doubt as to whether a hole had exploded or not, no one shall return to it within one hour, been observed in this case, Thomas, in all reasonable probability, would have been alive now. I called upon the agents of this mine, where it appears it was a usual custom for the Special Rule's to be contravened, to warn their men against continuing the practice. 1 killed 1 injured.

THOMAS Howell - 1881 - 29/01/1881 – Age 28 – Collier. Deep Duffryn, Nixon Taylor and Cory, Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

THOMAS Howell - 1883 - 10/05/1883 – Age 36 – Collier. Weig, Weig Coal Co., Swansea, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

THOMAS Humphrey - 1888 - 20/09/1888 – Age 58 – Collier. Court, Herbert Dynevor Coal Co., Neath, Glamorgan. Fall of top coal (2ft. thick) while holing in dirt below it without sprags, after trying to wedge the coal down. Pillar and stall. Victoria seam, 4ft. 9ins. thick.

THOMAS Humphreys (injured) - 1884 - 14/05/1884 – Age 25 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). A piece of slate, which had just been split, fell against his leg. Ankle sprained. 6 months off.

THOMAS Isaac - 1880 - 03/06/1880 – Age 47 – Timberman. Park, D Davies and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of coal and clod.

THOMAS Israel (injured) - 1881 - 19/08/1881 – Age 24 – Labourer. Llechwedd (slate), Festiniog. While working in his bargain he was struck by a small piece of roof which fell from a height of 24 feet. It is supposed that it was loosened by being struck by stones thrown up against it by blasting. 6 weeks off.

THOMAS J.S. - 1880 - 05/11/1880 – Age 14 - Collier’s boy. Blaengwaur, D Davis and Sons, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

THOMAS Jacob - 1882 - 11/02/1882 – Age 51 – Hitcher. Lewis Merthyr, Lewis Merthyr Navigation Collieries Co. Ltd., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Burnt through the upsetting of a paraffin lamp on the cage in the shaft. 2 killed.

THOMAS James (injured) - 1887 - 24/06/1887 – Age 37 – Drawer. Beehole, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Burned by firedamp igniting at a torch lamp in a place which was used as a lodge for water and where gas had not been previously seen. It was considered that the fireman had not made proper inspection.

THOMAS James (injured) - 1888 - 19/06/1888 – Age 16 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. While turning the borer, put his hand on the top, receiving the blow from the mallet on his hand.

THOMAS James - 1883 - 04/07/1883 – Age 20 – Hewer. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Head crushed between a balk and a tub.

THOMAS James - 1883 - 12/07/1883 – Age 20 – Hewer. South Durham, South Durham Coal Co., Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham. Severe injury to back by fall of stone in longwall. Died 15th.

THOMAS James - 1884 - 23/07/1884 – Age 46 – Timberer. Great Wyrley, Great Wyrley Colliery Co., Wyrley, Staffordshire. Killed by fall of roof coal from between two slips.

THOMAS James - 1884 - 26/03/1884 – Age 25 – Miner. St. Just United (metalliferous), St. Just United Mining Co. Ltd., St. Just, Cornwall. Whilst engaged, with his comrades, taking down some ground, known to be weak, from the hanging wall of the lode above their stope a large rock suddenly fell on him causing instantaneous death.

THOMAS James - 1888 – 17/02/1888 – Age 20 – Shackler. Lower Duffryn, Powells Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Crushed by trams which ran wild owing to breakage of hitching plate at the bottom of an engine plane. Died 11th May.

THOMAS James - 1889 - 18/01/1889 – Age 18 – Collier. North Dunraven, London and South Wales Coal Co. Ltd., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (12.5ft. x 6ft. x 3ft thick) on road 5ft. 3ins. high and 6ft. wide while passing with horse and tram of rubbish. Three or four pairs of timbers had been crushed out. The tram was found on the rails.

THOMAS Jenkin - 1888 - 13/11/1888 – Age 33 – Collier. Oakwood No.27, Cwmavon Works, Proprietors Co., Cwmavon, Glamorgan. Fall of roof (rock) face of level being driven through old pillars.

THOMAS John (injured) - 1884 - 18/12/1884 – Age 70 – Labourer. Oakeley Upper (slate). He was riding up an incline by a water balance, in contravention of one of the Special Rules, and somehow slipped off and rolled down the incline. Eight and a half weeks off.

THOMAS John (injured) - 1888 - 05/10/1888 – Age 34 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Engaged at work at the 274 fathom level. He and his comrades had fired four holes simultaneously which exploded, except one. After waiting 20 minutes Thomas returned to the place, and the fourth hole exploded injuring him about the body.

THOMAS John (injured) - 1888 - 13/12/1888 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Engaged in tramming in the 160 fathom level. While using a bar it fell from his hand to the 170 level. Instead of going to the main ladder road he uncovered an old winze and tried to climb down that way, for the purpose of recovering the bar. One ladder being rotten broke with his weight and he fell 6 fathoms. The winze was closed for traffic some years previously.

THOMAS John (injured) - 1889 - 13/03/1889 – Age 23 – Miner. West Wheal Seton (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. Whilst wedging a door at the 100 fathom level Thomas’s heel got caught between the main rod and the door. His lip was cut and his nose broken.

THOMAS John (injured) - 1889 - 21/01/1889 – Age 54 – Labourer. Cwmorthin (slate). While he was leaning over between two trucks, in order to hook them together, another man pushed one of them and Thomas had his head caught between the two loads. Severe scalp wound. 6 weeks off.

THOMAS John Henry - 1885 - 23/12/1885 – Age 23 – Engineman. Mardy Lockets, Merthyr Steam Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 81 killed.

THOMAS John Owen (injured) - 1889 - 24/07/1889 – Age 18 – Quarryman. Oakeley (slate). While he was boring a hole, some rock in the fall, three small stones trickled down and one struck him on the head and cut him severely. 4 days off.

THOMAS John Wallace - 1886 - 10/08/1886 – Age 20 – Collier. Moreton, Owners of Moreton Colliery, Saundersfoot, Pembroke. Fall of coal at the face owing to sufficient sprags not having been set. The roof also fell heavily and broke the timbering.

THOMAS Joseph - 1883 - 08/04/1883 – Age 62 – Collier. Prescot, Wigan and Whiston Coal Co. Ltd., Prescot, Lancashire. On the 27th Dec. 1882 the deceased was injured in the stomach by a pick shaft being driven against him by a fall of coal. He continued to work for a fortnight, and was then off work for two or three weeks when he resumed again for six days after he was unable to follow his employment. He gradually got worse until in April it was decided to perform an operation which was done but he unfortunately he succumbed under it and died 18th April 1883.

THOMAS Joseph - 1886 - 30/08/1886 – Age 14 - Collier boy. Glyn, Glyn Colliery Co. Ltd., Porth, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. Naked lights only were in use at this colliery the seam being one in which gas had seldom been seen. The boy's father, who was severely burnt at the same time, was aware of the presence of a body of gas and appears, by knowingly entering it to get a shovel, to have wafted it out upon his naked light.

THOMAS Lewis - 1881 - 02/12/1881 – Age 55 – Fireman. Clydach Valley, Thomas Riches and Co., Ton-y-Pandy, Glamorgan. Struck by timber near pit top.

THOMAS Lewis - 1882 - 27/09/1882 – Age 22 – Collier. No.4 Level, Dowlais Iron Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Fall of coal.

THOMAS Louisa - 1886 - 19/02/1886 – Age 22 - Oil girl. Mardy Locketts, Merthyr Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mardy, Glamorgan. Killed by tram running wild down incline. Female.

THOMAS M. - 1881 - 23/03/1881 – Age 23 – Haulier. Darran, Rhymney Iron Co., Glamorgan. Killed by falling between trams. He was riding on the nook between the first and second tram and his head came in contact with a piece of timber and knocked him off.

THOMAS Martin (injured) - 1888 - 17/08/1888 – Age 21 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Working in a stope in the bottom of the 95 east. Just as he was leaving work, about a barrow full of deads standing in the end of the stope about 9 feet above him fell on to his head fracturing his skull. He and his comrade had been warned by the agent that these deads were hardly safe but it was thought they would stand until they got the timber under them.

THOMAS Meadows - 1884 - 14/11/1884 – Age 28 – Fireman. Douglas Bank, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Collieries Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. Deceased was drawing props from the waste and had taken about 20 out when, on his knocking out, another a heavy fall took place before he could get away. He appeared to have been doing the work in a proper manner.

THOMAS Morgan (injured) - 1882 - 11/10/1882 – Age 19 – Miner. South Darren (metalliferous), Aberystwith, Cardigan. He and his partner had put in a stage so as to stope away the roof of the level but the supporting timbers were arranged too far apart, one of the planks broke, and the men fell 8 feet. Thomas injured his foot. 2 weeks and 5 days off.

THOMAS Morgan - 1880 - 10/12/1880 – Age 25. Naval Steam, Naval Steam Co., Penycraig, Glamorgan. Explosion of gas. 101 killed.

THOMAS Morgan - 1887 - 21/02/1887 – Age 43 – Collier. Ynysfiao, Trodyrhiw Coal Co., Treherbert, Glamorgan. Fall of roof which was being blasted. Strong rock roof. 9 ft. seam. Long wall.

THOMAS Openshaw - 1884 - 05/05/1884 – Age 50 – Miner. Croft Side, Darcy Lever Coal Co., Lancashire. Fall of stone while holing.

THOMAS Owen (injured) - 1883 - 26/03/1883 – Age 25 – Miner. Mona (metalliferous). He was boring a hole in his pitch when some loose stones fell on him and broke his arm. 6 weeks off.

THOMAS Owen (injured) - 1886 - 27/04/1886 – Age 35 – Labourer. Votty & Bowydd (slate). He was unhooking two full trucks which were still in motion and had his arm squeezed between then. Seventeen and a half weeks off.

THOMAS Owen - 1889 - 12/02/1889 – Age 22 – Collier. Birchgrove, Birchgrove Colliery Co., Llansamlet, Glamorgan. A loose stone (7.5ft. x 3.5ft. x ft.) from the roof had been raised on its side and rested against a sprag to enable some coal to be chipped off and it fell upon him.

THOMAS P. - 1883 - 29/11/1883 – Age 36 – Repairer. Abergorki, Burnyeat Brown and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Fall of roof.

THOMAS Pickerell - 1880 - 07/09/1880 – Age 22 – Rider. Blaenclydach, The Forest Iron Co., Tonypandy, Glamorgan. Run over by journey of coal tram on drift.

THOMAS Rees - 1886 - 17/11/1886 – Age 22 – Hitcher. Abercanaid, Mortgagees of Plymouth Works, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. Crushed by the cage which descended unexpectedly as he was cleaning the scaffold on which it alights.
He omitted giving the usual signal.

THOMAS Richard - 1882 - 06/02/1881 – Age 32 – Labourer. Braichgoch (slate), Corris, Merioneth. A stone rolled on to his hand while he was loading a tram waggon from a heap of rubbish. 13 days off.

THOMAS Richard - 1883 - 27/09/1883 – Age 17 – Miner. Cook’s Kitchen (metalliferous), Cook’s Kitchen Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. An unexpected fall of ground from the hanging wall of the lode. About 30 tons weight of stuff fell away. The place from which it fell had previously been sounded and was considered safe. 2 killed.

THOMAS Richard - 1885 - 18/03/1885 – Age 43 – Miner. Votty & Boydd (slate). He was standing on a ledge of rock, which he knew to be insecure, it gave way and he fell 9 yards, receiving fatal injuries.

THOMAS Richard - 1885 - 26/09/1885 – Age 22 – Rider. Maindy, D Davis and Co., Treorky, Glamorgan. Crushed by tram.

THOMAS Richard - 1886 - 09/12/1886 – Age 21 – Collier. George, Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Mountain Ash, Glamorgan. Collision of railway trucks, on self-acting incline, between the George and Lower Duffryn collieries in consequence of a stone having been wilfully placed in the self-acting points below the meetings, thus preventing their working. Eleven men were at the time riding up to their work. Riding on this incline was prohibited, and in some instances parties had been prosecuted and others fined for so doing. 5 killed.

THOMAS Robert (injured) - 1881 - 06/09/1881 – Age 24 – Labourer. Llechwedd (slate), Festiniog. He was climbing up the face of his bargain, after firing a hole, when a piece of slate loosened by the blast fell and struck him on the leg. 4 weeks off.

THOMAS Robert - 1883 - 21/08/1883 – Age 24 – Miner. De Eresby Mountain (metalliferous). The men were getting a piece of timber, weighing about 4 cwt., across an underground footbridge when it gave way suddenly and they were precipitated into the chasm beneath. The exact cause of the giving way was not ascertained possibly the rock on one of the sides gave way. 2 killed.

THOMAS Robert - 1889 - 05/04/1889 – Age 34 – Labourer. Votty & Bowydd (slate). Unexpected fall of a part of the roof of the large underground chamber in which he was working. About two tons of rock fell at a little distance from the deceased struck the working face and rebounded into the chamber. The deceased was found directly afterwards with his skull fractured. It is probable that his death was caused by his being struck by one of the fragments but it was also suggested that in rushing away, on hearing the fall, he struck his head with sufficient violence to fracture the skull. The roof had been carefully examined and sounded eight days before the accident.

THOMAS Robert D. - 1889 - 27/11/1888 – Age 15 - Collier’s boy. Powell’s Duffryn Treaman, Powell’s Duffryn Steam Coal Co. Ltd., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Fall roof (clod), 4.5ft. x 3.5ft. x 12ins. in middle between two slips parallel to face. Gob, 5ft. back no props where stone fall. Two Feet Nine seam. Long wall. Died 7th Sept.

Collision of railway trucks on self-acting incline between the George and Lower Duffryn collieries in consequence of a stone having been wilfully placed in the self-acting points below the meetings, thus preventing their working. Eleven men were at the time riding up to their work. Riding on this incline was prohibited, and in some instances parties had been prosecuted and others fined for so doing. 5 killed.

THOMAS William - 1885 - 16/07/1885 – Age 57 – Timberman. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Dolcoath Mining Co., Camborne, Cornwall. Deceased was killed by being struck on the head by the balance box of the man engine bob at the 143 fathoms level. It was the special duty of deceased to examine and grease the man engine. There was no evidence to show how the accident happened as the unfortunate man was alone at the time of its occurrence.

THOMAS William - 1887 - 01/11/1887 – Age 29 – Haulier. No.1 Ferndale, David Davis and Sons, Ferndale, Glamorgan. The horse which he was driving kicked him and he fell in front of a journey of loaded trams which was passing on the parting and he was run over. Died 16th November.

THOMAS William - 1887 - 03/05/1887 – Age 18 – Rider. Maritime, Maritime Coal Co., Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Run over by loaded trains on engine-plane, having fallen off the front tram. There was a slight curve with bevelled pulley and it was thought the jerk when the rope left the pulley caused him to fall off.

THOMAS William - 1887 - 10/02/1887 – Age 50 – Pumpman. Tredegar No.7, Tredgar Iron and Coal Co. Ltd., Tredegar, Monmouth. He was walking down a surface incline between the Mountain and the Globe Pits and got run over by the full journey. There was room at the sides and also on the empty road the trains having just passed him.

He was in front of the tub contrary to the special rules. It was his first day at this colliery and it appears that he had been cautioned on the subject. His own error.

THOMPSON Ebenezer - 1889 - 31/05/1889 – Age 20 – Drawer. Broadfield, Lancashire. Died from natural causes but suspicion was excited by his having been kicked by a daywageman respecting which the coroner’s jury deprecated colliers taking the law into their own hands and corporal punishment. Fatal fall of rock at a shunt in the Bent Mine engine brow, where he, with the underlooker and others, were engaged making repairs. The roof had been affected by weighting in consequence of coal having been worked out in the vicinity. The size of the stone appears to have deceived them. Error of judgement.
