THORNBER N. (injured) - 1884 - 17/01/1844 – Sinker. Bank Hall, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Burned in newly sunk shaft, dissaranged the air and gas fired at their lights in side place. 5 injured.

THORNE Robert - 1881 - 03/03/1881 – Age 14 – Banksman. Mancet, Joseph Wright, Hawarden, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased slipped and fell down the pit in consequence of its being unfenced. Proceedings were taken against the owner of the mine for a breach of the Act of Parliament, and fined £5. The fine was given to the parents of the boy who was killed.

THORNES Samuel - 1888 - 21/04/1888 – Age 40 – Cager. Hamstead, Hamstead Colliery Co., Great Barr, Staffordshire. Died 23rd April. Crushed by cage at pit top through some misunderstanding as to signals.

THORNHILL Edward - 1881 - 12/04/1881 – Age 22 – Collier. Bretby No.3, Countess of Chesterfield, Burton-on-Trent, Derbyshire. Returning from work along the main roadway when a large fall of roof came on them. 2 killed.

THORNLEY John - 1885 - 14/09/1885 – Age 32 – Drawer. Pewfall No.2, Richard Evans and Co., Haydock, Lancashire. Inquiries made. Deceased and the collier were lowering a tub, a yard or two, to have more room to fill when their place, being steep, it overpowered them and deceased, who was in front, was forced down brow and crushed against a prop.

THORNLEY Robert - 1885 - 12/10/1885 – Age 19 – Drawer. Low Hall, Moss Hall Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. A stone fell on deceased as he was taking his tub along the level. The roof was bad and not timbered but the witnesses stated that, previous to the accident, the roof was safe and that several officials had passed under it just before the accident.

THORNTON Edward - 1885 - 09/11/1885 – Age 70 – Collier. Padeswood, Padeswood United Coal & Cannel Co. Ltd., Mold, Flint. Inspection made and inquest attended. Deceased was drawing a prop to get down some top coal when more fell than he expected and he was caught. He neglected to use the appliances at hand for drawing this prop although he had done so with those drawn previously.

THORNTON Luke - 1883 - 08/01/1883 – Age 50 – Loader. Linby, Linby Colliery Co., Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Fall of coal whilst attempting to save his shovel from being broken.

THORNTON P. - 1887 - 20/10/1887 – Age 68 - Iron miner. Cleckheaton (ironstone), Bowling Iron Co., Bradford, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

THORP William - 1889 - 02/04/1889 – Age 22 – Drawer. Brackley No.1, Bridgewater Trustees, Lancashire. Fatally, by two tubs which escaped on a slope dipping one in 70, and in the excitement to see the injured man taken to the pit it was not ascertained how the tubs escaped. Inspection and inquest attended.

THWAITES Richard - 1882 - 16/02/1882 – Age 27 – Deputy. Trimdon Grange, Walter Scott, Trimdon Grange, Co. Durham. Killed by explosion gas in Harvey Seam. 74 killed. Buried in Kelloe Cemetery. Single man (widower).

TIBBOT Griffin - 1884 - 15/05/1884 – Age 60 – Rockman. Braichgoch (slate). Unexpected fall, of a huge block of slate, while he and another man were preparing holes for the purpose of throwing it down by blasting.

TICKHILL George - 1884 - 30/03/1884 – Age 31 – Stallman. Holbrook, J and G Wells Ltd., Eckington, Derbyshire. Fall of roof while preparing a shot.

TICKLE Bryan - 1881 - 08/02/1881 – Age 53 – Manager. Hindley Hall, Pearson Knowles Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inquest attended. The deceased was walking along a colliery railway, during a storm, and was knocked down by a train of waggons.

TIDYMAN Charles - 1882 - 12/12/1882 – Age 13 – Trapper. Murton, South Hetton Coal Co., Sunderland, Co. Durham. Crushed by engine set of tubs. He got out before the set stopped and fell between the tubs and was run over.

TIERNEY George - 1881 - 16/01/1881 – Age 35 – Engineman. Rowley Hall, Rowley Hall Colliery Co., Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Improperly stepping into cage whilst motion.

TIERNEY Thomas - 1885 - 27/10/1885 – Age 31 – Drawer. Phoenix, BB Glover and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was riding out on a full tub, contrary to the special rules of the colliery, and neglecting to get off when he came to a low place, was crushed against a bar. The officials do not appear to have enforced the rules with regard to riding on the tubs.

TIGH John (injured) - 1880 - 06/12/1880 – Age 52 – Miner. Agecroft, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Pendlebury, Lancashire. Hurt with a crane handle, which was jerked out of his hand by the tub he was letting down stopping and then moving on again.

TIMMINS T. - 1881 - 25/08/1881 – Age 56 – Engineman. Wallows, Earl of Dudley, Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. The engineman was engaged, changing a bucket, in pumping pit, and while pumping rods were being lowered the capstan rope broke and running down the shaft struck him and fatally injured him, he died soon afterwards.

TIPPEN John (non-fatal) - 1887 - 23/04/1887 – Collier. Rosehall No.12, Robert Addie and Sons, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Fall of roof at face.

TIPPET Thomas - 1882 - 03/05/1882 – Age 18 - Asst. timberman. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Was engaged with the timbermen in repairing Highbarrow East Shaft which is used for drawing purposes only whilst descending a ladder, it came away with him at the 70 fathoms level and he fell to the 140 fathoms level. Had the ladder been properly stapled, instead of nailed, this accident would not have happened. The head timberman, whose duty is to keep the shaft in repair, had himself passed over the same ladder a few minutes previously. At the inquest the jury returned a verdict censuring the timberman very strongly.

TIPPING George (injured) - 1880 - 08/12/1880 – Age 62 – Miner. Broad Oak, Broad Oak Colliery Co. Ltd., Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire. Taken ill whilst at his work in No.2 Pit, and being taken home died. The place was apparently well ventilated and in good order. Not comprised.

TIPTON James (injured) - 1888 - 20/07/1888 – Age 50 – Miner. Snailbeach (metalliferous). He was working in a sink when a stone fell from the footwall and struck his foot. Three and a half weeks off.

TONGE Joseph (injured) - 1880 - 14/06/1880 – Age 40 – Miner. Hagside, Andrew Knowles and Sons Ltd., Radcliffe, Lancashire. Gas suddenly appeared for the first time when they were using candles building pack wall. 4 injured.

TONKS Alfred - 1887 - 06/08/1887 – Blower. Hange, Round Bros., Tipton, Staffordshire. Died 17th August. Injured with two others by explosion of gunpowder. He had the lid off his powder can and it is conjectured that a spark from his candle fell into it.

TOOLE James - 1887 - 28/12/1887 – Age 22 – Drawer. Moss, Pearson and Knowles Coal & Iron Co. Ltd., Pemberton, Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was finishing the holing in a two yard ribbing when a piece of coal fell over on to him from a facing. This collier added there were two sprags set but it is doubtful whether they had not been removed.

TOWNLEY Richard - 1889 - 25/05/1889 – Age 54 – Miner. Lower Darwin, Lower Darwen Coal Co., Lancashire. Fatal by roof falling from a break when he was pillaring. Inspection and inquest attended. Of 54 Stanhill, Oswaldtwistle was killed. The deceased was following his usual occupation of getting coal when a large block weighing about 4 cwt. fell from overhead completely burying him and crushing him to death. A search was made for his body, but it was upwards of an hour before it could be discovered...A verdict of accidental death was recorded. (Accrington Gazette).

TOWNSEND Joseph - 1887 - 12/11/1887 – Age 57 – Miner. Old Meadows, George Hargreaves and Co., Lancashire. Not comprised by the Act. Found insensible at his place of work without any external appearance of injury, died the same day. Heart disease from which he had been suffering and attended by the doctor. Air good.

TOWNSEND Thomas - 1881 - 02/09/1881 – Age 38 – Header. Hartington Staveley, Staveley Coal and Iron Co., Staveley, Derbyshire. Explosion of firedamp.

TOWNSEND William - 1886 - 07/07/1886 – Age 16 – Labourer. South Wales, South Wales Colliery Co. Ltd., Monmouth. Fell out of cage. He and seven others were going down in the morning, six got off at the three-quarter landing 40 yards from the bottom and he and the other were going down before the cage started again, he turned round, his foot slipped and he fell, the space through which he fell was about 10 inches.

TOWNSHEND Edward - 1889 - 16/10/1889 – Age 30 - Horse driver. Mossfields, Hawley and Bridgwood Ltd., Longton, Staffordshire. Explosion 64 killed.

TOWNSLEY Robert - 1888 - 19/04/1888 – Age 39 – Hewer. St. Helens, St. Helens Colliery and Brick Co., St. Helens, Cumberland. Explosion of gas. 35 killed.

TOWSEND George - 1888 - 06/11/1888 – Age 36 – Labourer. Manners, Manners Colliery Co., Ilkeston, Derbyshire. Engaged in setting a new boiler a screw jack slipped out and the boiler fell on him.

TOYE John - 1889 - 20/11/1889 – Age 20 – Miner. Wheal Crebor (metalliferous), Tavistock, Devon. Deceased and his elder brother were engaged in a pass in the back of the 48 fathom level, knocking out from the side of the pass planks which they required in another place. The planks were not keeping the ground but only the ores from coming down. The latter having been removed there was no need of the planks for the purpose for which they had hitherto been used. After knocking out several, the deceased remarked, that there was another higher up and decided to release it. While thus engaged a rock of from 2 to 3 tons weight dropped out from the hanging wall and killed him instantaneously. Previous to falling the rock seemed sound enough. It evidently came off at a soapy head. I inspected the place immediately after the occurrence, and was satisfied that the men had exercised due caution and that they neither could have foreseen nor prevented the accident.

TRACEY Michael - 1887 - 01/11/1887 – Age 42 – Collier. Tawd Vale, Tawd Vale Colliery Co Ltd., Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. He was working at a widework face and the roof fell in over his drawing road owing to its not being barred. He had not been visited by an official from the time of starting at 6 am. up to the time of the accident at 11.30 am.

TRAFFORD Robert - 1881 - 25/07/1881 – Age 14 – Inclineboy. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. By mistake he put both sets into one way, and on joining broke the incline rope, running the tubs back to bottom of blank where he was caught by them, if he had stayed in the refuge hole at the rapper he would have been safe.

TRAFFORD Thomas - 1885 - 29/05/1885 – Age 21 – Miner. Eston (ironstone), Bolckow Vaughan and Co. Ltd., Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. While leading a spirited horse it was going too fast round a curve and upset a tub breaking Trafford’s leg. Died 17th June.

TRANTER Thomas - 1885 - 11/12/1885 – Age 56 – Dayman. Teversal, Stanton Iron Co., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fall of roof.

TRAVERS Patrick (non-fatal) - 1889 - 19/07/1889 – Age 33 – Brusher. Darngavil Greyrigg, Darngavil Coal Co. Ltd., Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp. 6 days off.

TRAVIS David - 1884 - 09/02/1884 – Age 52 – Dataler. California, Wigan Coal and Iron Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made. The deceased was engaged with two others in getting down roof, in an air road, and packing it in an old road alongside. He foolishly knocked out a prop, which was in the way of the pack, without first setting another, when a heavy fall took place under which he was buried.

TRAYNER Bernard - 1887 - 24/11/1887 – Brusher. Thankerton, Monkland Iron Co. Ltd., Bothwell, Lanarkshire. Went into an unfenced place with naked light. Manager convicted for not having the place fenced off.

TRAYNER J. - 1886 - 13/02/1886 – Age 32 – Repairer. Longton Hall, JA Glover, Longton, Staffordshire. Crushed between tram and post.

TRAYNOR Daniel - 1881 - 07/03/1881 – Age 47 – Collier. Rose Bridge, Rose Bridge & Douglas Bank Colliery Co. Ltd., Wigan, Lancashire. Inspection made and inquest attended. The deceased was pulling some coal from the face, when a heavy fall of roof came over the face to a step he was approaching, and which, it is supposed, he laid bare. The place was fairly well timbered.

TRAYNOR Michael - 1884 - 13/06/1884 – Age 14 – Driver. Elswick, Elswick Coal Co., Elswick, Northumberland. Fell down shaft from upper seam to bottom.

TREDINNICK William (injured) - 1889 - 15/08/1889 – Age 40 – Miner. Dolcoath (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. On reaching the 352 fathom level, whilst descending to his work, the man apparently got giddy and fell out of the ladder a distance of 4 fathoms. He received injuries to his back and side.

TREDLONG John - 1880 - 03/05/1880 – Age 25 – Sinker. Newfield, Bolckow Vaughan and Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. Suffocated by black damp in a sinking pit which was only 14 yards deep. Morris, as charge man, went down first and the other two went to his rescue and they were all lost. 3 killed.

TREEN Joseph - 1884 - 10/12/1884 – Age 14 – Driver. New Watnall, Barber Walker and Co., Eastwood, Nottinghamshire Assisting roadway men to remove stone when a portion fell on him from the roof.

TREGEAR Francis (injured) - 1888 - 14/06/1888 – Age 21 – Miner. Botallock (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. While tamping a hole containing a mixed charge of dynamite and powder, a premature explosion took place, Maddern being killed on the spot and Tregear being very badly injured losing one hand. I had previously spoken of the danger of using mixed charges and the men had been warned about it. An iron tamping bar was used but not until after a second layer of tamping had been gently rammed with a wooden bar. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death and added a rider to the effect that a regulation should be enforced and the same read to every man in the Botallack Mine that mixed charges should not in future be used. 1 killed 1 injured.

TREHERNE John - 1887 - 22/07/1887 – Age 35 – Collier. Mardy Locketts, Merthyr Colliery Co. Ltd., Mardy, Glamorgan. While barring down a slip of coal, a block or roof 7 feet x 3.5 feet x 16 inches thick followed the fall of coal. The stone fell from two slips at right angles and broke off at props on the other two sides. Four feet seam. Long wall. Died 11th September.

TRELOAR Benjamin - 1888 - 04/04/1888 – Age 15 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. Deceased, and another, were employed in tramming stuff in the 235 fathom level. At the time of the accident he was engaged in helping to fill the waggon when a large stone, from a pile about 4 feet above him, rolled down and pinning him by the feet rolled over on to his head killing him instantly.

TRELOAR Henry - 1884 - 05/12/1884 – Age 21 – Miner. Stank (metalliferous), Barrow Haematite Steel Co., Lancashire. Fall of stone.

TRELOAR J. - 1888 - 29/06/1888 – Age 16 – Miner. Wheal Bassett (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. The two deceased men were working in a stope, just under the 180 fathom level. Shortly after they commenced work a scale of ground came away from the back of the level, about two or three fathoms above where the men were at work, and in falling carried away the timbers supporting it the whole coming down on to the men at work below. The rock that fell away came off from what is known as a soapy head, that is water had got into a clay seam and made the latter greasy, from which the scale came away without warning The ground all round was quite sound. 2 killed.

TRELOAR John - 1882 - 18/07/1882 – Age 39 – Shaftsman. Great Laxey (metalliferous), Isle of Man, Isle of Man. Fell 5 fathoms to the bottom of the shaft while being lowered by two other men by a windlass.

TRELOAR Joseph (injured) - 1888 - 17/12/1888 – Pitman. Wheal Greville (metalliferous), Camborne, Cornwall. The injured man was standing on a ladder, to oil the braces of a fend-off bob in the Goolds shaft, 50 fathom level. The engine was going quicker than usual. He ought to have rung to stop it but be neither did this nor did he go up high enough on the ladder, so as to deliver his oil at the top of the stroke. The consequence was that on the upstroke his hand got jammed, he was carried off his feet and dropped on the sollar below.

TREMAIN Ernest - 1883 - 28/05/1883 – Age 19 – Miner. Brotton (ironstone), Morrison and Co., Saltburn, Yorkshire. While engaged filling a tub of stone, about 107 yards back from the face, a large stone fell off the side.

TREMBATH Ambrose (injured) - 1888 - 01/03/1888 – Age 19 – Miner. Wheal Owles (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. The injured man was working at the back of the 115 fathom level with his brother. The latter sent him down to the level for explosives to blast with and he was told to bring up powder and dynamite while preparing the charges for blasting an explosion took place. The man could give no account of the accident himself. It was probably owing to the snuff of his candle getting into the powder.

TREMBATH Humphrey (injured) - 1888 - 24/08/1888 – Age 42 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Engaged in blasting. According to the usual custom he used a candle-end for the purpose of lighting the fuse. The candle fell from where he put it and he thinking the fuse had not become ignited, began to refix the light and the hole went off. He was fortunately not very seriously injured.

TREMBATH James - 1888 - 21/11/1888 – Age 52 – Miner. Levant (metalliferous), St. Just, Cornwall. Whilst riding up from underground, on the man engine, he got under one of the steps and was pushed into the shaft. The man was a stranger to the mine and the accident occurred where the lode changes its underlie. He was being piloted by a man above him and had been told to turn round the rod but in doing so got too far forward and under the step.

TREMBATH John - 1885 - 05/10/1885 – Age 33 – Miner. Montreal (metalliferous), John Stirling, Cumberland. Reaching between a loose piece of ore and a bank of stone for his candle when the ore slipped and crushed him.

TRENGOVE Francis - 1886 - 17/12/1886 – Age 21 – Trammer. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea Mining Co., Pool, Redruth, Cornwall. Whilst assisting his comrade, to train a loaded waggon from the end of one of the levels, he was crushed against a pass and received injuries from which he subsequently died.

TREVABTHAN or TREVATHAN John - 1880 - 14/08/1880 – Age 15 – Driver. Auckland Park, Bolckow Vaughan and Co., Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham. On coming outbye a collier took Trevatlian’s pony and rode on the limbers, and Trevatlian got on top of the tubs to ride and was crushed against roof.

TREVASKIS John - 1882 - 18/03/1882 – Age 18 - Kibble filler, Wheal Jewell (metalliferous), Wheal Jewell Mining Co., St. Hilary, Cornwall. Was alone at the 40 fathoms level filling and by some means fell to the 50 fathoms level and was instantly Killed, it is supposed that he fell through the capstan shaft, the trap doors of which were open at the time for the purpose of lowering a bucket. Deceased had seen the shaftsman open the trap doors covering the capstan division of the shaft a few minutes before the accident occurred, but how he happened to fall through it is impossible to say.

TREVELLIAN William John (injured) - 1889 - 05/03/1889 – Age 21 – Miner. Wheal Agar (metalliferous), Redruth, Cornwall. A stone came down the shaft and struck Trevellian on the arm causing slight injury.

TREVENA Sampson (injured) - 1888 - 01/11/1888 – Age 26 – Miner. Carn Brea (metalliferous), Carn Brea, Cornwall. Whilst being lowered in the gig appointed for the purpose the latter got too much way on and ran at a terrific pace to the bottom of the shaft severely shaking all the 16 men in the gig and necessitating the seven mentioned being medically attended to. It is very fortunate that the accident was not far more disastrous. I am inclined to attribute it in a great measure to the defective break arrangement. The break was actuated by a screw and extended half way round the fly wheel, but being shod with wrought iron and not under cover, became exceedingly slippery in wet weather. The engine man appears also to have lost his head and stated that in trying to put on steam against the engine, when he found the gig was running too fast, he was unable to get the valve to act. It is right to mention that the whole arrangement was new and little experience had been gained in the working of it. If the road had not been in excellent order and the gig constructed of the strongest and best materials there is no doubt that the consequences would have been much more serious. 7 injured.

TREVENING William - 1884 - 28/07/1884 – Age 21 – Collier. Garn, Blaenavon Iron and Steel Co., Monmouth. He went back a few yards from the face to fetch some tools, and a lump of coal about four cwt. fell upon him.

TREVETHICK Samuel (injured) - 1885 - 1/11/1885 – Age 33 – Miner. Bank Hall, Executors of Col. Hargreaves, Lancashire. Leg broken by roof stone from two unnoticed slips in a place 2 yards wide.

TREVITHICK William - 1884 - 30/10/1884 – Age 46 – Miner. East Pool (metalliferous), East Pool Mining Co., Pool, Cornwall. Whilst going down to his work he slipped out of the ladders and fell a distance of about 9 fathoms on to an arch of ground.

TRINDER John - 1889 - 13/03/1889 – Age 17 – Filler. Parkfield, Kingswood and Parkfield Collieries Co. Ltd., Mangotsfield, Gloucester. Suffocated by blackdamp in an air road, not in use, and into which he should not have gone.

TRIVIS James (non-fatal) - 1884 - 03/03/1884 – Collier. Foxley, Foxley Coal Co., Tollcross, Lanarkshire. Explosion of firedamp.

TRIVOT James - 1882 - 12/08/1882 – Age 22 – Haulier. Griffin, J Lancaster and Co., Monmouth. He was knocked down by a tram and his leg broken. His relatives refused to permit the leg to be amputated till the 20th. when mortification had set in. He died of exhaustion consequent upon the operation the same day.

TROOP W. - 1888 - 01/09/1888 – Age 40 – Dataler. Denaby Main, Denaby Main Coal Co., Rotherham, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.

TROTTER James (injured) - 1880 - 13/01/1880 – Miner. Brinsop Hall, Brinsop Hall Coal Co., Westhoughton, Lancashire. Collar broken by coal falling close to his sprag. No. 6 Arley Mine.

TROUP David - 1884 - 19/08/1884 – Age 18 – Trimmer. Longrigg, James Nimmo and Co., New Monkland, Lanarkshire. Run over by waggon while shifting it at screens.

TROWBRIDGE Alfred (injured) - 1887 - 10/06/1887 – Age 35 – Dayman. Gin Astley & Tyldesley Coal & Salt Co. Ltd., Lancashire. Leg broken by roof which he was taking down.

TRUEMAN W. - 1886 - 02/10/1886 – Age 38 – Byeworker. Silkstone, Normanton, Yorkshire. Explosion of coal dust. 20 were killed at once, one died 4th Oct and one on the 31st Oct. 22 killed.
