Blidworth Closed After 62 Years

The General Offices and demolition of the headgear. The shafts were filled with concrete at sump, inset levels and surface and graded limestone chippings between and the demolition of the pit top buildings was completed by October 1989.

A horrific incident happened in the shaft on 6th June 1943 when 3 blacksmiths, were on a shaft exam and standing on extended flaps when the ascending cage struck the descending cage at half way and the two cages were tangled together but suddenly the cages parted quickly and the 3 men were plummeted from halfway down the 720 yards (658m) deep shaft to their deaths

Charles William Brown (64) collapsed and died underground on the 3rd October 1957.

A major incident occurred on 26/11/1947 when there was a fall of roof on No5 Meco panel. The fall extended some 5 yards (4.5m) behind the Meco Moore cutter loader and some Face men were buried. Teams of men were set out to cast coal and stone away from the fall area and some were utterly exhausted by their efforts but still wanted to work to clear the fall. One of the men George Henderson a Deputy was released after 45 minutes. After 5 hours George Clews was released also. Both men suffering from minor injuries. John Wetherill (54) mentioned above was buried under the fall and fatally injured. Horace Leivers and Charles Fairbrother received the Daily Herald Order of Industrial Heroism for their part in the rescue attempt.
