Further Records

Annesley Bentinck (Nottinghamshire) mined the cheapest coal in its 132 year old history. Fastest 1 million tonnes achieved on 16th November 1992.

  • Pit output record 61,000 tonnes
  • Overall best o.m.s of 12.53 tonnes
  • Best single face output of 40,037 tonnes
  • Highest single face output of 8,657 tonnes for a day
  • Face cutting record of 1,740m (1.08 miles)
  • Highest ever advance of 41.9m (74 shears) on Blackshale 83s

Calverton (Nottinghamshire) with 680 men produced its first million tonnes for the year since 1968 when 1,500 men were employed.

In December 1992 Manton (Nottinghamshire Group) produced the fastest 1 million tonnes for the year 1992-1993. The bolted roadway shown is PT16s loader gate in the Flockton seam.

There was interaction from Parkgate old workings some 43m (40m) below and the thin Chavery seam above the Flockton that at times comes very close to the Flockton coal.

Roof bolting began in 1991 using cable bolts, however due to extreme pressures it was decided to increase the bolt density until the Chavery seam lifted away to about 7 yards (7m) above. Maximum movement of the strata was about 8” (0.20m). 6 strain gauge and extensometer stations, 31 sonic extensometer stations and 3 wire extensometers were used to give a comprehensive overview of the situation regarding bed separation etc. The exercise proved successful and once conditions improved they returned to the normal bolting pattern. To the left shows conditions being monitored.

At Thoresby (Nottinghamshire), 3.32 miles (5,340m) was cut on one face in one night shift (Sunday 6th December 1992), using an Anderson AM17 shearer cutting 20.15 strips off 122s retreat face making them European Champions. On the same shift North Selby 903s retreat face using an AM500 shearer, Gullick Dobson 4 x 720 chocks, Dowty Meco panzer and Huwood gate belts also achieved 5,055m (3.14 miles). These 2 collieries were the first to break the 3 miles of cutting in a single shift in Europe. The previous record at Thoresby on 122s Parkgate panel was 4,155m (2.58 miles) with a BJD Ace shearer.

Asfordby
(Nottinghamshire Group) achieved 502m of drivage in 4 in-seam primary bolted roadways w.e. 12th December 1992. Using Joy 12CM machines 159m was cut in West South Parkgate development, 144m in Deep Main 101s main gate and 132m in 101s tail gate and a Dosco MkIIB headed 67m in West intake.

Automatic Re-Start
On Exhausting Fans

After successful trials with automatic re-start on exhausting ventilation fans at Bevercotes and Welbeck the system was implemented at Asfordby as a permanent feature.

Remotely Operated Paddies

At Thoresby 2 remotely operated paddies had wide-angled cameras located at the two main stations and were kept under surveillance by a video link in an engine house some 2 miles away.
