Sherwood Closed After 90 Years

- Continued -

Connections were made underground to Shirebrook Top Hard from Sherwood Dunsil also a further connection from Top Hard to Mansfield High Hazles, and finally a connection to Mansfield at the Deep Hard/Piper level.

Around 10 gallons per minute of underground water was surfaced at No2 shaft, static head 420m from sump at Dunsil horizon whilst the pit was working and discharged into the River Maun. The view of the tip is from Berry Hill looking over Mansfield. When I was a pupil at the neighbouring Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School 1947–1952 along with other boys we used to sneak out of school to buy a 2d (1p) tea cake from Sherwood Canteen. On sports days we had to do a ‘marathon run’, round the periphery of the new dirt tipping area. Our swimming lessons were at Sherwood Baths. These were renamed Rebecca Adlington Baths after her Gold medal wins at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China in 2008 and other medals at the Olympic Games in London in 2012. A further road junction was made off Debdale Lane adjacent to the ex–Manager’s house and the sports field, also leading to a new carpark for the station on the Robin Hood line from Nottingham to Worksop. On the other side of the road to Sherwood Rise a half winding wheel commemorating the life of the colliery can be seen towering above Debdale Lane. A new housing estate covers the whole area of the old pit yard (Dunsil Road) and surface area plus further housing on the old tip site near the railway bridge on Debdale Lane.

Closed circuit TV equipment specifically designed for mines was tried in Oct 1990 and used an intrinsically safe camera by Rees Instruments Ltd on a track road header to a 12” TV screen thus releasing the spotter man necessary when cutting on the blind side.
