PHILLIPS Henry - 1865 - 16/01/1865 – Age 20 - Collier. Bwllfa, Bwllfa Coal Co., Aberdare, Glamorgan. Suffocated by going into gas. A proper danger signal was placed to indicate danger but he passed it and so brought about his own death.

PHILLIPS John - 1867 - 25/04/1867 – Age 55 - Collier. Mardy, Rhymney Iron Co., Rhymney, Monmouth. John Phillips was sledging down some Coal in his proper working place when suddenly a piece of it fell and struck him against a tram with such violence that he died shortly afterwards.

PHILLIPS Philip - 1867 - 26/09/1867 – Age 18 - Haulier. Try Phil, Rhymney Iron Co., Rhymney, Monmouth. Left his horse and went into a stall to amuse himself by cutting a vein of Coal when it fell and killed him. The Collier belonging to the stall had just come out to get a light and should have prevented the youth going in.

PHILLIPS Richard - 1866 - 10/01/1866 – Age 35 - Engineman. Worcestershire, Thomas Glassbrook, Swansea, Glamorgan. By trying to stop rope of hauling engine falling down the shaft.

PHILLIPS Richard - 1868 - 23/12/1868 – Age 28 - Collier. Bargoed, Guest and Co., Dowlais, Glamorgan. Killed by fall of Coal.

PHILLIPS Richard - 1868 - 28/12/1868 – Age 28 - Collier. Merthyr Dare, Rhys and Richards, Aberdare, Glamorgan. Killed by rope breaking which was being used for raising old slides which were being replaced.

PHILLIPS Samuel - 1864 - 01/09/1864 – Age 35 - Miner. No.2 (ironstone), Ebbw Vale Co., Sirhowy, Monmouth. In ascending the pit he jumped off the cage probably thinking he was close to the bottom. Just before he had got on to the carriage he had become alarmed at the fall of water from the tank in consequence of the valve getting gagged and no doubt he had not recovered his presence of mind.

PICKERING Charles - 1863 - 15/05/1863 – Age 14 - Hooker-on. Coed Poeth (ironstone), Samuel Jones, Wrexham, Denbigh. Falling part way down engine pit.

PICKERSGILL Percival - 1862 - 03/12/1862. Stanley, Hudson, and Co., Wakefield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof in mine.

PICKFORD John - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

PILLING Samuel - 1869 - 24/09/1869 – Age 45 - Miner. Bents Colliery, Thomas Fletcher, Little Lever, Lancashire. Earth between the coals and the 10-feet mine falling upon him. Heedlessly he was working underneath, when another miner was getting coal overhead.

PILLING T. - 1861 - 16/07/1861 - Collier. Breightmet, James Hardcastle, Bolton, Lancashire. Crushed by the cage as he was getting out at the bottom of the shaft, there being a mistake about the signal.

PILLING William - 1862 - 01/05/1862 - Collier. Pewfall Colliery, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. Fall of roof.

PIMBLETT Thomas - 1863 - 15/11/1863 – Age 67 - Day Labourer. Haydock, Richard Evans and Co., St. Helens, Lancashire. He was crossing pit eye when the descending cage struck him on the head.

PITCHER W. - 1861 - 21/09/1861 – Age 41 - Pikeman. Willingsworth (ironstone), J H. Haines, Tipton, Staffordshire. Fall of roof in the gateroad of an ironstone pit. After cutting the sides he was preparing to bring down the roof and in knocking out the timber props it accidentally fell on him.

PITT J. - 1863 - 19/02/1863 – Age 65 - Pikeman. Steer’s Meadow, W Tolley, Wednesbury, Staffordshire. Inundation of water from a stream on the surface of the Colliery. 3 killed.

PLANT C. - 1866 - 30/04/1866 – Age 14 - Collier. Coal, Leasow Harris and Co., Wordsley, Staffordshire. Fall of coal from side of gateroad in new mine coal.

PLANT J. - 1861 - 20/03/1861 – Age 38 - Pikeman. Portaway Hall, W.H. Dawes, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire. Injured in an explosion of firedamp 8th. He was at work in a narrow cutting and pierced a blower of gas which ignited at his candle. Died this day.

PLUMMER Eli - 1869 - 22/10/1869 - A Boy. Newbury, Westbury Iron Co., Newbury, Somerset. Explosion of firedamp. 11 killed. At half past six in the morning there was an explosion at Newbury, Colliery, five miles from Frome, in which nine persons, were killed and four others were so severely injured that scarcely any hopes were entertained of their recovery. The men were going down for the day shift. The first warning that anything was wrong was a loud report from underground which could be heard for a mile and then a large amount of dense smoke appeared out of the upcast shaft. The pit head was soon covered by women and children crying and exhibiting the deepest grief. The bailiff, Mr Bake and the lampman descended the downcast shaft and proceeded in the direction of the cupola. They found the gas had ignited near a standing pillar of Coal. They found a
Jacket belonging to one of the deceased in which there was a pipe and a quantity of tobacco.

POLLARD John - 1869 - 13/10/1869 – Age 48 - Collier. Kirkless Hall, Wigan Coal and Iron Co., Wigan, Lancashire. Run over by Coal trucks above ground.

POME John - 1868 - 19/02/1868 – Age 27 - Collier. Gellygwn, Joseph Priestly, Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Killed by fall of stone.

POOL John - 1867 - 18/02/1867 – Age 29 - Collier. Deep Kingswood Co., Kingswood, Somerset. Two men were employed in driving a deep heading called a ‘gug’. In the morning when they went to work they found that a fall of roof and rubbish had taken place in the night and overlaid the ’incline’ rope (a small round hemp one) nevertheless they went down previously requesting the winders to pull up the empty tub and fill it with the stuff that had fallen. The tub was drawn up 50 yards when the rope broke being cut through by pulling it through the fallen stuff. The tub went to the bottom and injured him. These men should have cleared the fall from above. A rasher act was never committed.

POOLE George - 1864 - 28/11/1864 – Age 28 - Collier. Kingswood Colliery, Kingswood Coal Co., Kingswood, Gloucester. They with 4 others went down to commence work in a close man hudge. Through derangement of the indicator and absence of proper signals they went three or four feet too slow, Bryant and Poole were either pushed out of the hudge or struggled themselves out and were drowned. The other 4 remained in and escaped. 2 killed.

POOLE Thomas - 1864 - 28/08/1864 – Age 32 - Labourer. Smoile, William Worsick, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire. Fall of roof.

POPPLETON Alfred - 1866 - 13/12/1866. Oaks, Messrs. Firth, Bamber and Co., Barnsley, Yorkshire. Explosions of gas. The total number of victims was 334 by the first explosion of the 12th December 1866 and 26 by the second explosion the following day. Total 360. Seventy five bodies were recovered prior to the shafts being closed forty five were recovered during the first twelve months after the shaft was reopened and seventy during the past years making the total 190. This deducted from 360 leaves 17 bodies still in the Colliery. It is remarkable that all but two have been identified.

PORTER William - 1864 - 01/04/1864 – Age 40 - Collier. Cwmnantddu, Ebbw Vale Co., Abersychan, Monmouth. Fall of roof which occasioned such severe injuries as to cause his death next day.

PORTESS George - 1865 - 25/04/1865 – Age 33 - Hewer. Caroline Colliery, South Hetton Coal Co., Eppleton, Hetton, Durham. Crushed by tubs in engine plane.

POTTER J. - 1860 - 15/03/1860 - Collier. Chain, Hulton Colliery Co., Hulton, Lancashire. Fall of roof being in a new place, no prop set.

POTTER James - 1866 - 24/07/1866 – Age 35 - Sinker. Hindley Field, Richard Morriss, Wigan, Lancashire. Something falling down the shaft while he was working at the bottom.

POTTER James - 1868 - 05/08/1868 – Age 17 - Drawer. Parr Colliery, Richard Evans and Sons, St. Helens, Lancashire.

POTTER James - 1868 - 17/03/1868 - Miner. Clifton Hall, Andrew Knowles and Sons, Clifton, Lancashire. Fall of roof in the Trencherbone mine falling after a chock was taken out. He died in the Salford Dispensary.

POTTER John - 1861 - 07/08/1861 - Collier. Dykehead, Wilsons and Co., Hamilton, Fife. Woodwork of pit taking fire which deranged the ventilation. 13 killed.

POTTER Richard - 1869 - 28/10/1869 – Age 46 – Byeworker. Thorncliffe, Newton Chambers and Co., Sheffield, Yorkshire. Fall of roof.
