Following the tragic tip slide at Aberfan, South Wales, where 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a Dirt tip collapsed due to rain and poor tipping method and slurry engulfed the local school and neighbouring houses it was decided to investigate situations where subsidence etc. could affect surface tips.  At Teversal a panel, 150s in the Dunsil seam which dipped to the North down the face from LH to LG at 1in4 was working under the Tips. At Mansfield similarly a panel was near to the Tip and at Creswell a Tip slide earlier had engulfed a road and sooner than move the debris once it had been stabilised a new road was built around it instead.

It was agreed that meetings in the Conference Room and exercises were to be carried out at Teversal with Freddie W Gill, Chief Inspector of Mines being in charge. The Area Civil Engineer Gordon Fryer was involved as were certain other disciplines such as the Survey department.  Bernard T Bailey attended most of the meetings, me on a couple of occasions, and certain exercises as noted were carried out, many by me, and the results were examined in detail. Following all exercises at the 3 collieries nominated new legislation would be created and would eventually be issued as new Tips Act 1969 and Regulations regarding same. The 150s Dunsil panel was eventually abandoned as a precaution against a Tip failure. 2 such incidents had happened before and were discussed.  As noted, boreholes were drilled into the slurry pond banks by Wimpeys to see if they were stable and all were located and piezometer measurements and levels observed periodically, in fact frequently.  Much work was carried out on the Tips and a close watch kept to note any subsidence etc. Subsidence pegs were set out and levelled to frequently and all results noted.

Ron Wood, Undermanager transferred from Silverhill, and Horace Henshaw, Deputy Manager transferred from Harworth the same week, and Harry Coppell transferred to Harworth to get a higher grade Deputy Manager (Gr I) but would leave after a time to Worksop Technical College as a Lecturer but sadly would die early, aged 54). We all got on well with Harry Coppell. Horace Henshaw took over the Undermanager’s Office and I had to put a sign on his door, his first request, first day … H Henshaw Deputy Manager. Ron Wood had to move next to the Deputies Report Office near the Lamp Room, adjacent to the PHB. H Henshaw then wanted a ‘Fire plan’ a few minutes later and then he could not understand that we had never had underground heatings or fires as they did at Harworth. However I convinced him to have a R & FF plan on his wall. He seemed happy with that. After a couple of more enquiries in the day I thought ‘he is going to be a right pain’, but no, he had heard we had the Chad newspaper on Friday so he came for that to read whilst he was having his dinner out of a ‘pudding basin’ from the Canteen, but still in his pit muck. He used to wander about all afternoon like that without his boots or helmet on, then go for a shower in the Manager’s bathroom and then clean his car several times a week. He really hadn’t got a full time job at Teversal, we were only a small pit with about 670 underground men and 150 on the surface, total 820 unlike Harworth where he had come from with 895 u/g and 315 s/f, total of 1215 or more at times. That pit was a pain, always in trouble with strikes, mainly Yorkshire men, underground fires, outbursts of firedamp laying the pit off for days at a time, very deep at 900 odd yards shaft depth and extremely hot working conditions inbye with men having to strip off to pants, boots and helmet only at times, whereas at Teversal the shaft was only 220 yards deep and the workings were only approximately 400 yards deep from the surface at the lowest point so the working conditions were cool and most had to wear Duffel jackets (if favoured) or their own coats to keep warm if working on the Main Roads or Pit bottom. For example myself … I had a vest, thick shirt, pullover, boiler suit and Duffel jacket and scarf, plus knee pads and a dog collar to hang my oil lamp on whilst crawling through faces but did leave the coat and scarf at the gate end to pick up later. Horace very rarely found us anything to do after that, only such as bad work surveys at 8s for example otherwise he only came into our office for a chat and a cup of tea and to remark on an article out of the paper. He was only a small chap but he used to remark … ‘When I’m in the pit I’m 10 feet tall’ … He probably was a practical man and office work was not to his liking. His nickname at Harworth was Tojo, being of slight build and with somewhat Japanese features, but at Teversal due to him clicking his teeth regularly he became known as Skippy after the bush kangaroo from a show in Australia that made similar noises. I got on with him very well, if fact all our team did, likewise Ron Wood the new Undermanager who popped in two or three times a week for a chat and a cup of tea and of course George Noble the Manager who hardly ever bothered us at all. A great place to work at, everybody friendly, Unions, Officials, workforce and particularly gangers or haulage personnel who would always give you help if necessary such as moving tubs out of our way whilst we were surveying, like I used to help on the hand filled faces in my early days particularly when we split up jobs and I had some spare time, sometimes chucking a ton or say a maximum of two of loose coal onto the face conveyor with a size ten shovel or ‘Elephants tab’ to help a collier to have a rest whilst crawling through faces generally from Tail Gate to Loader gate, some gave me half a crown for helping them, paid out in the Canteen on Friday, they never reneged, they were good times. Never could get used to setting bars and props or shifting ripping dirt though, heavy work, even chucking lumps into a packhole for a man to build a pack, or shovelling at least 20 tons of coal every day in an 8 yard stint filled me with awe. That’s what made me stick to Surveying instead of going over to the Mining side of management. I thought that I could get trapped doing heavy face work for several years … didn’t fancy that at all. Although I did pass my Shotfirer’s and Deputy’s Certificates later, just in case I needed a job.
