Ray Gregory the Production Manager was there. He was quite a character and like many those days smoked in the office. He always had a cigarette dangling from the side of his mouth and the smoke was curling up and into his eyes and he was spluttering and rubbing his eyes until they were bloodshot but he would not take the cigarette out and he continued to splutter and choke and the office was full of smoke. George pushed a window open and looked at me. At last he got down to the nub. George Noble had been trying for some time to get the Deputy or Overman on the phone to find out the problem but no one was answering and he was getting frustrated. Suddenly Ray Gregory looks across and said in his drawl … ‘Well George, we can get a man on the moon and talk to him, but we can’t get to know what’s going off at the gate end’. George looking perplexed, Ray lighting another cigarette and a rye smile on his face as he glanced at me and I began laughing. Eventually someone answered from the panel. It was another fault. I would get on to a linesman to go and measure up.

Sat 11 … Surface … Lining in pulley wheels on No1 headstocks … (RB*, Dougie Green, Billy Winterbottom and Charlie Parker, Blacksmiths) … Winding rope was wearing on one side … however on moving the pulley wheel to line with the chisel marks on the plate we had marked the week before the rope was then fouling the side of the King plate hole … Saturday 9.30 am to 5.30pm … frustrated we had to abandon the job. Dougie Green was blaming me for the wrong position … not so. Dougie lit up scowling. He was another one who smoked a lot and held a cigarette strangely between 2 fingers. He always wore a smart flat cap.
CzS on holiday, didn’t tell me as usual till Thurs afternoon when he always went at 2pm app when going on holiday and left me in charge as usual with a special job.

Sun 12 … Surface … We stood on the headgear chequer plate beside the winding wheels re-checking and lining in the yard side pulley wheel again to the offsets … (RB*, same men). The wheel was still in position from Saturday and although sceptical it was finally agreed by Dougie Green that our line was correct and the wheel was finely adjusted in line and tightened. The size of the spanner was huge, to fit the nuts of course, and Billy Winterbottom who was rather rotund had arms like Popeye and very thick lenses to his glasses, Charlie Parker the striker was ruddy faced and quiet and both wore flat caps and pulled and pushed the spanner until the nuts were tight, … a new King plate was to be made and repositioned … 8.00am to 11.00 am Sunday … afterwards there were no further problems and no wear on the winding rope. Therefore the marks I had put and the wheel lined in was correct.
