Manriding Accidents

There was a serious accident at Thoresby (Nottinghamshire) when 2 runaway trucks gathered speed and ran into a manriding train, causing one man to be thrown clear but very badly injured. (see Thoresby report for David Coleman as he related to me).

Incidentally a manriding incident occurred at Thurcroft (South Yorkshire), where a top and bottom manriding conveyor snapped on a 1in4 grade whilst travelling at 2.13m / sec, and 42 men had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

Approximately 105 men were riding on the conveyor at the time.

Central Repository For Old Plans

During 1991 it was decided that due to the downturn in the industry all plans and records of abandoned mines should be kept at one central location due their importance and they were transported to and based at Bretby, Burton on Trent, under the auspices of David W Clarke (6912), Mining Records Officer.

Rescue Station

John Shotton succeeded as Superintendent at Mansfield Woodhouse Mines Rescue Station 1991-1993.

British Coal Restructured

British Coal was restructured from 1st October 1991, with the introduction of 5 Groups instead of Areas. Nottinghamshire Area became Nottinghamshire Group.

The 12 pits had 23 advancing faces and 8 retreat faces, employing 9,600 men underground and 1,600 on the surface.

Plans were ahead to try to have more retreat faces in future, but this of course would mean that many headings would have to be driven first.

Various new heading machines were tried, and obviously ones that could cut down and load out material the fastest were the ones favoured.

Roof bolting instead of setting arches also saved time and the transportation of heavy arches from the surface to the place of work was greatly reduced.

Terry E Wheatley (8348) was appointed Group Director of Midlands Group replacing A (Tony) F Deakin (7903).

Coal Industry Bill

The Coal Industry Bill contained powers for the repeal of the 1908 Coal Mines Regulation Act (8 hours) which limits the mine workers and officials hours of work underground.

The Coal Task Force Was Inaugurated.

Closures

Treeton (South Yorkshire) to north east of Orgreave was closed. Position: 43/4387/602818, 43/4387/560782. The Barnsley seam abandoned 1969, Swallow Wood abandoned 4th Nov 1991. A pillar was left for the BSC Labs in 1985.

Amber Valley drift mine (Derbyshire) (Jack Hudson) was closed temporarily in December 1991. Water was a problem and needed to be pumped out.

Records

Annesley Bentinck (Nottinghamshire) record 24,095 tonnes from 2.2m thick 87s Blackshale advancing face. The 53 strips gave an advance of 31m and total output for the pit was 37,100 tonnes.

Bevercotes weekly output record reached 43,500 tonnes with 38,105 tonnes from 9s Top Hard face. In the same week 7th December 1991 Silverhill record reached 40,000 tonnes and Welbeck 71,000 tonnes, with 204s Deep Soft retreat face producing 70,240 tonnes.

John Northard (4954) (an ex Director of North Derbyshire Area) succeeded H Merrik Spanton (4612) an ex Director of North Nottinghamshire Area) (1984-1991) as Chairman of British Coal Enterprise.
