Thurs 3 … Office … Meeting TJR Sales 5pm … re HMI John Jones measuring prop free front at 116s face as 6’ 10” instead of maximum 6’ 6” … to find out why … ranting on about mechanisation etc whilst I was idly gazing out of the window when I suddenly realised he was talking to me. ‘I’m not an engineer’ I said. He glared and said ‘You’ve got a ******* tape haven’t you?’ He then threatened me with the sack if I hadn’t got the solution on a plan by 8am next day …. The meeting broke up and I asked Wilf Pearson for a drawing of the machine. He replied ‘He’s given you the job not me,’ and walked off. I too chose a few choice expletives and proceeded to argue that I needed one of his men to accompany me to the job.

Fortunately it was a nice chap Eric Jones Shift Charge Engineer who turned up after a further altercation with Wilf Pearson, Mechanical Engineer re not getting me a plan of the Ranging drum shearer to use as a base! I had no idea what was needed or what to look for or what measurements to take … I would just have to weigh the situation up when I got there.

Thurs 3 … U/gto 116s face at 7pm … Measurements to Shearer machine, face, panzer, chocks etc … no solution after cutting several yards … still 6’ 10”. Eric then checked the machine underneath after a while and found that a fitter had put the machine shoes on back to front making the machine crab whilst cutting, thus giving the extra 4” … reported same … out of pit at midnight. (90 u/g)

Fri 4 … Next morning at 6.30am the Survey Office was full of people when I arrived at work, all supping our tea I might add. I began plotting results at 7am but only after turfing out J Sheldon Area Mechanisation Engineer who furnished me with a drawing of the machine, Walter Hulley from Drawing Office, Wilf Pearson and Deputy Jim Hooley, JA Daniels Deputy Manager, VW Brown Undermanager, Jim Kerr spare Production Manager, so that I could plot the job. Jim Kerr said that he would protect me from the bully Sales …. Never saw him again …

Fri 4 … TJR Sales promptly arrived 8am, tapped on the door and said ‘Good morning Bob’ then apologised for the outburst. I explained I knew what was wrong but it was difficult to draw. With that he agreed and said he was off to Bevercotes and would return just after noon and we would have lunch brought from the Canteen in the Deputy Manager’s Office, when he was as different again, a bit like Jeckyl and Hyde and couldn’t have been more pleasant to me as we chatted about various things, then after coffee he wrote down my description as I dictated what I had found and measured and I signed it and he countersigned the report that was to go to Mr HM Spanton Area Director. He thanked me for my efforts and well produced explanation and off he went back to Area HQ.
